Conference Programme WHY GYMNASTICS WORKS? Studio B age ALL James Lowe International School on the Rhine WHY? Gymnastics forms a fundamental basis for strength, power, flexibility and coordination, thing that are as important in adolescent development as in early student years. It teaches self-discipline, provides immediate intrinsic feedback, allows opportunities for peer coaching, is a great platform for teaching about the musculoskeletal system, biomechanics, and forces. Our objectives are always to ensure that every child develops, improves and learns in each class. For many it will be improving or learning a new skill and experienced gymnasts can learn something about how to help others. Clearly enjoyment is essential for children to get the most out of all classes and it is vital that the content is pitched at the appropriate individual level and tone, whilst maintaining essential health and safety practices. Gymnastics provides a framework for a range of different approaches including group acro, vaulting, use of elements in dance, and breaking gender or somatotype stereotypes. WHAT? This workshop will be practical. No prior experience necessary, indeed it is meant as a practical revision or reference for the non-gymnastics specialist. It will involve working through a wide range of skills up to handstand and cartwheel, including strength exercises, balances, basic tumbling and flexibility movements. We will discover practical tips, ideas for feedback, age appropriate considerations, health and safety, and differentiation will be highlighted. You will access effective material for a full unit of work to be applied within a curriculum, or offer ideas how gymnastics can be implemented as part of a school club. HEART RATE MONITORS IN AN EVIDENCE FITNESSBASED PE PROGRAMME Varsity Suite age MS/HS Phillip Young Shanghai American School WHY? At Shanghai American School we have students grade 6-12 wear Heart Rate monitors in PE classes. We want students to achieve a targeted heart rate zone for 30 minutes or more out of a 65 minute period. This gives us objective data daily rather than subjective grading. WHAT? A discussion based workshop that shows how Shanghai American School uses Heart Rate monitors to assess students, plan lessons, and how we report as Standards Based Grading in the Middle School levels. I will explain how its works, why we use it, and what it might look like to implement at another school. CLIMBING WALL Climbing for 8 people with a Sport Park Instructor WHY? See wall……think why? 15:00 – 16:00 CLIMBING WALL Climbing for 8 people with a Sport Park Instructor WHY? Because you missed the earlier session? WHAT? Onwards & upwards! HOW WE CAN INCORPORATE DMS TO HELP MOVEMENT IN BADMINTON Arena A age MS/HS Stuart Lake TASIS England WHY? To improve movement on court in order to increase the speed of play. WHAT? We will look at developing good movement by using activities such as 1v1 partner tag, using DMS mats to develop footwork skills both without and with the racquet. We then progress this to movement on court incorporating the stroke cycle using games such as: overhead longest rally, the lift/drop rally and finish with competitive tournaments. INVASION GAMES MASH-UP Arena B age ALL Brandon Doles American School Barcelona WHY? This team game combines some of the best parts of two great games, Ultimate Frisbee and Capture the Flag with a twist. I use this game to help teach the following skills: throwing and receiving an object, spatial awareness, footwork, change of direction and travelling in multiple directions, dodging, and anticipation of movements. WHAT? During this practical workshop we will break down the basics skills of how to teach throwing and catching Frisbees to upper elementary students. We will also look at games/drills where you have to run routes to exploit space while anticipating where the throw will land, similar to American football. The object of the game is to be the first team to have all 10 Frisbees on your side of the field. This can be done by a combination of throwing, catching, and running with the Frisbees. You will smile, sweat and have great fun developing your movement, throwing and catching skills whist developing game intelligence.
