‘Doing to Learn’ is motto at 2021 Project Show “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve” is the National FFA Motto. Kilgore FFA members will display the “doing to learn” portion of this motto at the 2021 Kilgore FFA Project Show, which will be held March 26-27 at the Leon Gibson Memorial Ag Farm on FFA Road. Last year we had to go to an online format due to COVID, but this year we will be live and in-person and bigger-than-ever! Students will showcase their animals Friday beginning at 5 p.m., beginning with the Ag Mechanics show. Rabbits and chickens will show at 6 p.m., as well as goats, followed by lambs, pigs, steers and heifers. Students show in classes broken by weight (or age for heifers) and they also compete in Showmanship. Showmanship is where the judge will judge the person’s ability to show.

Blaine M. Jordon is a fifth-grader at Kilgore Intermediate School. He is involved as a FFA as a junior member. His project is a Berkshire pig, weighing 93 pounds when he was delivered and now tips the scales at 160 pounds. "We feed eight pounds of food a day, three pounds of Lenders 672 and one pound of Aggie oat groats in the morning and at night," Jordon said. "This project is my first project and slightly difficult, due to weather conditions. But, I have learned a lot about swine and showing. I hope this is the first of many shows." Madison Vowell loves showing pigs. “I love showing pigs because of the priceless memories and lifelong friends I have made,” she said. “I am involved in many different activities, but FFA has been my favorite so far! This is my sixth year showing pigs, and I have four more to go! I’m excited for what my future holds and can’t wait for the 2021 Kilgore Project Show!” Carlee Pieper is a ninth-grader who has been showing pigs for the past eight years. “I can say I honestly love raising pigs,” she said. “This year has been a challenge to say the least. When we bought pigs, we were not even sure we would have any shows to exhibit our animals, but that is a chance we were willing to take. Luckily the livestock industry has fought for the youth show to go on. “My brother and I have worked countless hours this year on our eight pigs,” she said. “We exhibited pigs at San Antonio, Rusk County and Houston Livestock show and been successful at all shows. Raising pigs has taught me so many things like responsibility, and dedication. I get up every morning before school and feed pigs, and then in the afternoon I feed them and walk them. We have spent on average about $1,000 per pig. This is the initial cost of the project plus feed and supplies. I enjoy showing pigs because of all the great memories I have made and all of the great people I have met. “I hope that you will get the chance to come out and see all of hard work that Kilgore FFA students have put into their projects and animals,” she said. “The show is set for March 2627 at the Leon Memorial Ag farm just off the loop in Kilgore. Come out and see all the Kilgore FFA students’ hard work.”

Skyler Greenberg says “This is my fifth pig to raise and show. She is a Duroc named Cinnamon. I have shown her in San Antonio’s pure breeding gilt show and Houston’s pure breeding gilt show, along with a few jackpot shows. This is my first pure breed pig, and I love her floppy ears. I am looking forward to my next pig.” Sam Clements says “I am showing a cross pig that I have appropriately named Mr. Banks. He is my first pig, so he was somewhat of a test subject (or guinea pig if you will). Due to an awkward and challenging year for Kilgore FFA, it was hard to have a first pig. Mr. Banks has taught me how to treat and raise a pig, opening a new door in my life.” Skylar Greenberg

“I currently have two show pigs, a Berkshire and a Cross,” she said. “I have been in FFA about six years now, and I absolutely love the program! Kilgore FFA invites you to our annual FFA project show this year. Please come support me and everyone else. Case Pieper is in the fifth grade at Kilgore Intermediate School. “This is my fourth year to show pigs,” he said. “My sister and I currently have eight pigs to tend to. We get up every morning before school and feed them and then again in the afternoon. Showing animals has taught me a lot about responsibility and dedication. I am thankful that we have been able to show at more shows this year than we did last year. Please come out to watch the show on March 26 at the Ag Farm. “This is my fourth year to show rabbits,” he said. “I am feeling more confident in doing the showmanship. And I have learned a lot about managing my time through this project. I have learned how to take care of rabbits, making sure that they have the food and water that they need to grow and making sure that they have a safe and clean environment.” Karleigh Murphy has been showing livestock since she was 8.

“I am extremely excited to show rabbits at the project show this year,” he said. “I have been showing market rabbits for eight years. I am raising six rabbits for the show, and even though they are small, rabbits are challenging to raise. I feed them, change their water, groom them, and take out the manure. Rabbit manure is the best fertilizer, and I use it in my garden! The amount of care and attention you give can be the difference between good rabbits and bad rabbits. I learn more each time I raise a new pen of market rabbits. I hope you will come out and support Kilgore FFA on March 27! See you there!”

“Unfortunately, my coffee table is still in the process of being finished, so I do not have a picture of it,” he said. “On the good side, my heifer Dixie and I have been going to show after show this year and have been having tons of fun. Dixie is about 13-months-old, and she is a gentle giant to say the least. We can’t wait for the show this year and all it has to offer!” Karleigh Murphy, a freshman at Kilgore High School, is also showing her very first market steer, George. “He’s a Shorthorn steer and is very stubborn. He is originally from Ohio and hated the heat last summer, but did very well in all the snow we’ve had this winter. I have had fun on this wild journey of showing my steer, and I wish to continue showing market steers in the future. Karleigh Murphy is showing her Beefmaster heifer, Jessie. “Jessie is my San Antonio Scramble heifer,” she said. “I was unable to show her in San Antonio due to the extreme weather this year, which was disappointing because Jessie is my first scramble calf I’ve purchased through any calf scramble organization. We’ve had our ups and downs, but Jessie and I are now inseparable. I am showing her at Houston and I plan to put Jessie with our bull as soon as the Kilgore Project Show is complete so I can raise and show her calf. You can see her at the Kilgore Project Show and Sale March 26-27. “ Kace Murphy will be showing a heifer, Rosemary. “Rosemary is a Beefmaster heifer who was born and raised in the pasture behind my house,” Kace said. “She got her name after Rosemary Clooney, the actress, and she’s just over a year old now. Rosemary and I have been to multiple shows and won many awards together, and we can’t wait for more! I invite you all to come see her at the Kilgore Show!” Kellen Murphy is 10-years-old and in the fourth grade at Kilgore Intermediate School. “This is Paco, he is my very first steer, and he has been a lot of fun,” Kellen said. “He is a Hereford and weighs over 1,000 pounds. I feed him every morning and every evening. He eats a whole lot and can sit like a big dog. Paco made this year so much better than it would have been without him. “I raise Boer goats, and this year the goat that I will be showing at the Kilgore Youth Project Show is a wether goat named Domino. Domino is a very big and strong goat, so it takes more time exercise him than most of the others. I am really excited to show him at the Kilgore show this year. He has been one of the best ones to work with so far. I hope to see you all at the show this year! Thank you so much for all of your support.” Zachary Riggs has been showing goats and agricultural mechanics for two years now. “This year I am a junior and I have my market goat, Jeffery; a utility trailer; and an epoxy end table,” he said. “I’ve always liked animals growing up, so it seemed fit for me to raise one through FFA. As for the projects, however, they were both built with a partner who wanted to learn the same skills as me such as welding or woodworking. I felt that it would be useful to learn these skills now, rather than trying after I graduate high school because they can help me secure a job that I otherwise wouldn’t have.”

Garrett Lumpkins says showing animals has become a big part of his life. “Ever since I was 8-years-old, I have always loved showing animals and being around them. I enjoy raising Lucy, which is the name of my lamb, and hope to have a lot of success this year.” Riley Rios is a junior at Kilgore High School who has in seventh grade. She has served as an officer for the past two years and is heavily involved in the National FFA organization. “My first year in the FFA, I showed broilers and won grand champion, but since then I have shown lambs at

our project show and I even won grand champion last year,” she said. “I have shown lambs for the past five years, and this year I have a ewe lamb named Dolly. Like my other lambs, she needs fresh feed and water along with care and daily tending. I am very excited to exhibit her at our annual Kilgore Project Show. This is his eighth year showing sheep. “I personally prefer showing sheep over other livestock because it’s just what I’ve always done,” he said. “My sheep this year we named Quit because she was a wild one at first, but now she might just be the best sheep I personally have ever shown.”

Collin Burrows is in eighth grade and has been a junior FFA member for five years. “This is my first year to build ag mech projects,” he said. “And I am learning a lot. I built a 12-foot utility trailer with a wood floor with Zach Riggs. I have been learning to weld and do trailer wiring. I have been learning how to talk to judges and how to plan a project. I am excited about what I am learning. I have also built a wood and epoxy coffee table. I built this from a slab of wood from a tree that was cut down at my grandma’s backyard. I learned to use a router on this project and how to work with epoxy. I enjoy FFA, and I enjoy building things.” Jermaine Roney is pictured with his fire pit, which he started building last year. This is Jayci Moore’s first year year in FFA. “I decided to show chickens as my first project,” she said. “I go out multiple times a day to make sure they have plenty of water, feed and to keep them moving. I have really enjoyed taking care of them and watching them grow. I can’t wait to be able to show them at the Kilgore FFA project show.” Kylie Herrin is in the sixth grade. She is raising broilers for this year’s Kilgore Project Show, and this is her third year to show at the Kilgore Project Show. “I am very excited about this year,” she said. “I have 75 chickens currently and will take some of them to the Houston Livestock Show March 11! Raising chickens is a lot of work, but it’s a lot of fun as well. My chickens need fresh feed and water daily, and I have to make sure the temperature stays warm. I look forward to seeing you at the project show and sale.”
