“Our enjoyment comes from watching people.” McFarlin said.

One of Jill Kirby’s favorite parts of the Korral was standing in a cage while a monkey ran across her body. “It’s a lot of fun,” said Kirby, 50, of Aledo. She went to the Kritter Korral in June for her daughter’s 13th birthday party. The family was staying at their beach house nearby and her daughter, Grace Kirby, insisted on having her party at the Korral. This birthday was a special one for Grace. Her birthday was in May, but the month before she had a brain tumor and taking care of her health came before a party. When her parents gave her the goahead for a party, she chose the Kritter Korral.

Jill Kirby said the Kritter Korral is different than any other petting zoo she has experienced because they let you hold the animals.

McFarlin said all of her animals are friendly because they have interacted with humans most, if not all, of their lives.

She typically sees about 40 people a day wander through the Korral, interacting with the animals. She is happy to see business pick up since Hurricane Harvey.

When the storm made landfall, the farm was thrashed. Most of the animals’ housing was destroyed, and the owners have slowly rebuilt. Now, it seems to be back to normal, she said.

With the summer heat, they have cut down on their hours. McFarlin and Brady are typically outside from 9 a.m. to noon and 7 to 8:30 p.m. That’s when they are feeding and cleaning to stay out of the heat.

McFarlin said they can be open for anybody most times when they are closed if the visitors call ahead.

“We love it,” she said.
