Home Design brings latest trends under one roof By Christina Cavazos ccavazos@news-journal.com Homeowners and homebuyers will be able to see the latest home trends and products as well as learn more about mortgage lending, building and remodeling services during the East Texas Builders Association 2021 Home & Design Show. The Home & Design Show is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Center, 100 Grand Blvd. in Longview. “One of the really interesting elements of our show is that there will be a variety of companies offering homeowner-related services under one roof,” said Angela Daughtry, executive officer of the East Texas Builders Association. “People will be able to see all of those companies under one roof in a safe environment where there will be social distancing and hand sanitizer and where you can wear a face mask. You’ll be able to decide who you want to do business with in a safe environment, instead of having to go from one business to another.” More than 60 vendors plan to participate in the show. They will be showcasing everything from the latest home trends such as kitchen countertop options, including granite, to pool design and installation services to landscaping opportunities, Daughtry said. “Because of COVID, people have

been traveling less and instead they’ve been spending more time at home. With that, we have seen a lot of people looking at home renovation projects; they’ve been taking the money they may have spent on travel and spending it on home renovations instead,” she said. “We’ve seen people doing special landscaping projects, revamping their kitchens, putting pools in.” The Home & Design Show offers the perfect opportunity to see those services and trends, so that those who are considering their options can get a better idea of what they’d like for their own home. Additionally, it is likely to be the only home show of the year. Most other home product shows were canceled amid the COVID-19 pandemic, but the East Texas Builders Association worked to make sure that it could offer a show in a safe environment, Daughtry said. “It’s really exciting to us that we’re able to bring a home product show to the community, and we look forward to seeing everyone,” she said. Capacity limitations will be in place at Maude Cobb because of the pandemic; however, Daughtry said because the show is a come-and-go event, she does not anticipate the capacity limit to be reached. Tickets to the Home & Design Show are $5 in advance online or $7 at the door. For more information or to purchase advance tickets, visit easttexasbuilders.org.

Creating your own

backyard oasis Our backyards are some of the best places to spend the summer months, especially if you’re practicing social distancing and are tired of being cooped up indoors. Fortunately, it’s possible to transform your outdoor living space into a secluded, open-air retreat.

Bring the indoors out. We often hear about bringing the outdoors inside, but the reverse is also true when designing a luxurious extension of your home. Homey, lived-in touches can take your outdoor space from sterile and unfinished to cozy and inviting. Think patterned throw pillows, fluffy blankets for chilly evenings, outdoor rugs, colorful lanterns, and decorative accessories like painted terracotta pots or metal tins. Invest in comfy furniture. What’s the best part of your living or family room? Chances are it’s your comfortable couch or recliner. To recreate the same feeling, splurge on some soft furniture that will make you want to stay outside for hours reading a book or working remotely. It doesn’t have to break the bank either. You can DIY a cozy lounging bench with reclaimed wood and hand-sewn cushions with outdoor stuffing and fabric. Add a relaxing pool or spa. Water has a calming effect and is often

linked to our favorite memories at the cottage or on vacation. A pool or spa can help transport you somewhere far away without leaving your home. A pool can help you and the kids get some exercise while swimming laps, while a spa can soothe tired muscles after a long day hunched over your laptop. To reduce energy costs and increase longevity, consider using Nudura insulated concrete forms, which provide superior insulation. ICF pools also can be custom-made to accommodate any design, making them a very versatile and efficient way to build pools.

Go wild with greenery. Live plants can help you feel connected with nature, and tending to them can help you feel relaxed yet productive during isolation. A vertical garden can add visual interest, while trees and shrubs can provide shade and character. Aromatic herbs like lavender or rosemary offer pleasant scents and can spice up your cooking. And don’t be afraid to cut some flowers from your garden to place in vases or pots for beautiful finishing touches. Find more information at nudura.com. © Metro Creative

Renovation trends in 2021 Home renovation trends are ever-changing. Renovations that might have been de rigueur 20 years ago may seem dated now. Recognizing the potentially popular trends of tomorrow is a great way for homeowners to give their homes a fresh new look and put themselves in position to capitalize on popular trends when they put their homes on the market. The following are some renovation trends that various experts suspect could emerge in 2021. Eco-friendly living: Eco-friendly appliances, furniture and designs can help to conserve energy and reduce waste, which environmentalists and government agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency note are two critical components in the fight against climate change. Large windows: Large windows can provide stunning views of the outdoors and allow ample natural light into a home. It may not be a

coincidence if large windows prove to be a hot trend in 2021. The COVID-19 pandemic that dominated much of 2020 forced many people to spend considerably more time at home. Darker homes without much natural light can adversely affect mood, especially when people are spending more time at home. Minimalism: The anticipated popularity of minimalism in 2021 may also be connected to the pandemic. As professionals were forced to work from home and many families spent more time together inside their homes than ever before, they may have recognized a need to cut back on clutter, including extra furniture. Multi-functional spaces: Homeowners asked a lot of their homes in 2020, as rooms were transformed into multi-functional spaces seemingly overnight. Renovations that can help homeowners transform rooms into multi-functional spaces figure to be hot commodities in the years ahead. © Metro Creative
