SONORA TRACK & FIELD 2013 Welcome to the 2013 Track & Field season. The coaches are extremely excited about what 2013 has in store for us. Our girl’s team is predicted 2 nd in the overall race for the gold this year within our league. With the loss of key performers on the boy’s side, there will be a lot of holes to fill. The track team has set a budget for this season, which includes paying for all of the following: Starting blocks, shot puts, discuses, batons, spikes, hurdles, sand, timing watches, invitational’s, scoring books, cross bars, measuring tapes, distance markers, flags, snack shack, awards, and our banquet. Without your help and support, your son or daughter will not get the use of these important necessities that will help in their athletic endeavors. The break down for these needs comes out to $140 per athlete. Any athlete who provides the team with a full fundraising need will also be given a spirit pack that contains a t-shirt and short. We ask that you partner with us this season, as we prepare to give your child the best experience possible. We ask that you consider one of three methods to help meet our fundraising needs. You may choose to donate in full by writing a check or using a debit/credit card tonight which allows your son or daughter to be excluded from further fundraising activities. All payments tonight are considered donations if you use the appropriate form attached, this donation is tax deductable. You may also choose to participate in our three fundraising opportunities, listed below:  Adopt-a-Raider o Sending letters to family, friends, pastors, doctors, dentists, etc., asking for support/adoptions.  Program Ad Campaign for our Website, ask the same people for their business cards  Jog-a-thon scheduled for March 23, 2013 These are all ways in which your family can help provide our program with the tools to help your son or daughter be prepared to compete at their highest level.

Tax Deductable …Fundraising Donation Amount Tonight=$140 PER PARTICIPANT

WE ARE OFFERING FIRST PICK OF SWEAT OUTFITS AND TRACK UNIFORMS (ON LOAN) FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS WHO DONATE IN FULL

TONIGHT. WE WILL HAND THEM OUT TONIGHT. If you would like to know more regarding the track and field budget join us at our next Booster Club meeting here at Sonora in the Teachers Lounge on Thursday, February 27 th at 6:00pm.

EXPECTATIONS School and family come first! This does not mean that practice can be missed on a regular basis. Situations that arise must be brought to the Coach’s attention. We understand that things come up without warning, a phone call to let us know the situation will make things a lot smoother and be greatly appreciated.

DRESS Track athletes are required to dress EVERYDAY. This includes those who have doctor notes, parent notes, etc. Friday’s are an increasing issue about dressing out! We do dress out on Friday’s! Students not dressing out on Friday’s might be subject to a lowered grade! This is still a class and this does show up on transcripts. Being on the Track & Field Team has helped many individuals gain acceptance to their choice of schooling. Please treat it this way!

HYDRATION During the track season the weather can play many tricks. Athletes are always encouraged to drink water at any time during a workout. With the danger of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, the entire coaching staff has a 100% understanding that our athletes need hydration to compete and practice.

TRAINER/INJURIES Please be aware that in any sport, track included, injuries are bound to happen in one form or another. Please keep us informed of any injuries your son/daughter might have. If you see a doctor we will need written approval that your child is cleared to participate. We have a Certified Trainer on campus and she will be available after school daily until around 3:30pm. I encourage you to have your athlete see her for any needs.

PRACTICE

Practice times vary, 6th period athletes begin at 2:00 pm. For the most part students will not be kept past 4:30, but sometimes coaches feel it necessary to stretch the practice a little later. Times may be pushed later due to the fact that our time for weight room use fluctuates. On early-release Wednesdays roll will be taken in the bleachers, and practice will begin at 2:30 pm. On heat advisory or rainy days all athletes must check in for roll in Theatron and will be dismissed at the end of the period.

MISSING PRACTICES AND/OR MEETS The ONE requirement we hold for each athlete is that they MUST participate in ALL THURSDAY HOME MEETS . If for any reason your son/daughter needs to miss a practice or meet, simply have them give us a note ASAP, or call his/her coach. Missing Practice will result in a lower grade!

State Cut Backs and Transportation Our District has issued us NO BUSSES for travel. Transportation will be provided for our first two non-league events (El Dorado and Santa Fe). One bus will be provided to students who are cleared and will participate. We ask you as parents to get involved. We ask you to take off work and join in on our your child’s fun. We ask you to help with carpooling and take part in team travel. We cannot afford to allocate funds from our budget to pay these expenses. Last year we took away $1600 from our budget to pay for travel that we could have used for spikes, hurdles, sand, uniforms and repairs to pay for something we can all help with. As coaches, we are not allowed to organize this. We need strong parent support to help organize and structure this State and District shortcoming. This year we have 6 away track meets. At $400 per bus we would have to take $2,400 away from our kids just for Transportation alone. WE NEED PARENT VOLUNTEERS TO HELP ORGANIZE AND TRANSPORT OUR ATHLETES. ANY PARENTAL HELP WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Sonora Athlete’s Expectations to Participate in Track Dear Parent/Guardian,

Welcome to this year’s Sonora Raiders Track & Field Team. Your son/daughter has chosen to sign up and participate in one or more aspects of this year’s team. Track is not an escape from regular PE, and is not a reason for Dance, Cheer, Out of Season Sports, nor students to sign up for a sport that they might be good at without helping the program fundraise. We expect all participants to participate. Track looks great on a college transcript and we treat it that way! Based on this decision… We need everyone to participate in fundraising activities that will help cover ALL of the previously mentioned maintenance issues. Without raising these funds our program cannot function at the highest athletic level. We will raffle off an iPod for involvement in helping raise these funds, however all participants are eligible for the raffle regardless of their donation amount. Participants must be present to receive the award! Your son or daughter is asked to help perform one or more of the following activities that allows them to meet our individual projected fundraising need:  Finding sponsors for our Jog-A-Thon  Obtaining at least TWO Adopt-A-Raider sponsors @ $40.00 each  Selling at least TWO internet ads for our website @ $40.00 each We are asking your son or daughter to participate in one, two, or all three of these activities to help the program. Our goal is for each athlete to raise $140! It is your individual choice of which fundraiser(s) you would like to excel in. Without your efforts in fundraising we cannot provide the proper tools and equipment needed to perform at our best. All of the cost is possible through fundraising. As the parent/guardian at Parent Night (Feb 19 th), you may choose to donate in full by writing a check or using a debit/credit card for the total amount of $140. If you do choose to donate in full your son or daughter will be eligible for the iPod raffle and be excluded from any other fundraising efforts. This donation is tax deductable by using the Adopt-A-Raider form. The Jog-A-Thon, Adopt-A-Raider and Internet Ads are for your convenience to get community businesses to help in our efforts, they are tax deductable to all sponsors as well. Donating in full will exclude your son or daughter from having to participate in the Jog-A-Thon activity and they will have first choice of sizes when we check out sweat outfits and uniforms! Sincerely, Sonora Track and Field Booster Club

Grading guidelines for participation in Track and Field We don’t cut anyone from Track and Field. We give all our student/athletes the chance to participate. But, as a parent you need to know that your sons’ or daughters’ choice to participate in athletics is also a privilege. We do not give free grades and units for non-participation. 6th and 7th Periods are both a class with roll and units, and both are considered a PE class towards graduation. Both classes are based upon attendance and participation. Track and Field shows up on your sons’ and daughters’ transcripts, whether it is an A or an F. + Participation- Track & Field has roll call taken as in any other academic class. It is a class and units will be deducted for not attending. It is a PE class and not dressing will be considered as nonparticipation. The schools PE policy for nonparticipation will apply. -Failure to complete the athletics packet will count against participation. -Failure to participate in fundraising will count against participation. -Failure to participate in home track meets will count against participation. + Athletics Packet- Each student is expected to complete the athletics packet. It consists of a physical and several papers including code of ethics, insurance, and other district mandatory papers in clearing a student to participate in after school activities. If you are a band member, cheerleader, or any other sport athlete, you probably have already done this to participate. If not, this is a mandatory packet that is part of your grade to complete. The final clearance card goes to Coach Tourville. + Fundraising- Your son or daughter will be asked to fundraise in order to keep Track and Field functioning at Sonora. It is part of participation. All students will be asked to show up and participate in a Jog-A-Thon on March 23rd 2013. There are several ways to bypass this activity as described in our parent packet. If fundraising has been met prior to March 23rd your son or daughter will be excluded. If not, each athlete will be expected to participate in our Jog-A-Thon. It is a two-hour commitment on this Saturday and considered part of the participation grade. + Home Track Meets- Your son or daughter will be asked to compete at all home track meets. If they do not compete then they must help with the hurdle crew, snack bar, field set up/ take down, and must sign out at the end of the meet. No exceptions will be made. No early sign outs will be allowed. Home track meets will be on Thursdays and will conclude around 6:30pm. There are 3 home track meets.
