The site is majorly divided into two zones due to the columns and has structural walls which constitutes the glass double glazed windows with reinforced concrete structural units. The other walls in the office are non structural and serve as partition spaces in the office. These are highlighted in the diagrams on the right side. The office area also has services like lifts, common toilets, and service shafts. An analysis of the space according to fin grids has also been done which can be seen on the right. The space has various zones if viewed with respect to column grids and creates a lot of negative spaces which needs to be eliminated or utilised in a proper way during space planning. Color coded zonal diagrams have also been provided on the right such that the activities can be categorised and the spaces can be grouped according to it. If viewed from the perspective of the free standing column the space can be divided into four zones and can also be diagonally cut. The columns being rectangular or square in shape help define zones in the space which circular columns cannot do. The clear distinguishing of zones can help with grouping activities of similar nature together.

Clients must appear at reception as soon as they reach the office, so that communication and tasks can be efficiently managed. This can be accomplished by situating the reception and waiting area near the entrance. All of the entrances on the given site face west, so the welcome area would face west as well, minimizing the amount of direct sunlight received.

Circulation and Accessibility

This section can be close to the gallery, which can act as a transition zone between the reception and the working area. People in the waiting room will be able to get a sense of the type of environment without looking at everything at once. As a result, the reception will be easily accessible from the entrance, allowing circulation throughout the space via the gallery space.

Fire extinguishers and first-aid kits must be available at the reception and waiting areas, which are the closest to the door. To ensure the safety of the location, a security guard can be stationed at the entrance.

Behavioural Properties

Other than this activities of the watchman like maintaining securityand various activities by the visitors visiting the office will take place here.

Furniture Requirements

The reception area will require a desk and chair for the receptionist, as well as a computer or desktop to coordinate the activities taking place in the center. The reception area will require lounging equipment as well as tables, plants, and artificial lighting to set the tone of the space.

Ergonomic Requirements

There should be enough circulation space in and around the receptionist’s chair and the desk. This will not only provide ease but also improve communication. Simailary, for the waiting area enough distancing is to be put between the sittings so that the the privacy of the clients is maintained.

13

14

Aesthetic Properties

Image, Status and Style

The reception serves as the image for the corporation and thus it should be luxuriously designed with a high ceiling and opening should provide transparency which allows visual link between the outside and the inside. The space as an overall should portray the company’s prestigious status in the industry and should also make a statement and seem welcoming to the people when viewing it from the outside.

Company Specific Design Standards

Since the company is a materials innovation center, extensive use of plywood and steel would help enhance the company’s design standards. Along with this, the surfaces can be exposed to show the intricacy of the work the company aims to do.

Sequential Diagrams

The existing shell of the site with the structural menmbers highlighted which the non-structural walls are in white.

The existing zones on the site following a proportioning system of 1:2 created by the columns and the beams.

The frame model used to derive the qualities of the office which included frames as a medium to bring transparency and inclined planes.

Zoning done on the basis of the overlapping horizontal and diagonal grid based on a proportioning system of 1:2.

66

The derived circulation in the space which also doubles up as the gallery space for the office and follows the diagonal grid strongly.

Element designed on the basis of the frame model and the infographics where the horizontal and vertical elements are combined together.

Peripheral setup of the frames with the central space left open and the zoning celebrated.

Vertical parttition made following the same language to enclose the spaces according to the required levels of privacy. 67

Both the elements coming together to create the spatial volume of the spaces while still maintaining visual connection with the other spaces.

68

All the elements coming together in the space to create enclosures and voids according to the different levels of privacy required.

The elements celebrating the natural qualities of the materials with the frames made of plywood and having a laminate finish and the connectors made of steel. The infill material used is made of cotton which is translucent and goes well with the context of Gujarat.

Approach to Design

76

Programming

The approach to programming started by developing a set of abstract diagrams which would represent the quality of the spaces. Several ideas were explored in these diagrams out of which inclined planes and overlapping planes emerged as the central ideas which were then carried forward to the design. Based on these ideas the programming of each space was done which would depict the requirements and the technical aspects of the spaces. The characteristics of each space were then detailed out in terms of their required privacy, views, furniture and furnishings.

Space Planning

Space Planning was done by creating a grid on the site. The existing grid was sub divided into a proportioning system of 1:2 and was then overlapped by a diagonal grid following the same proportioning system. The layouting was done according to the diagonal grid while the furniture was placed according to the horizontal grid. Bubble diagrams were made which would determine the adjacency of the spaces and the circulation was then derived from it. Furniture was then put in the allocated spaces which followed an unconventional approach to go well with the metaphor chosen which was a prototype.

Furniture/Fixture Design and Specification

Since the space is based on a prototype as a metaphor, the furniture and the fixtures needed to follow the qualities of a prototype which were experimental, miniature, novelty and scalable. Thus, a new language was invented in which conventional desk ans chair set up was not followed. A more flexible and collaborative sitting arrangement was fixed which would go well with the metaphor chosen.

Equipment Location

All the equipments placed in the office were done according to the requirement of the spaces. The carts and stools were placed at a location which was easily accessible from all points while all the executive tables were provided with under table storages. Thus, the equipments’ location was determined purely on a functional basis.

77

Approach to Design

78

Material and Finishes Specification

The primary materials used in the material innovation centre are plywood and steel and thus they are celebrated in the furniture and partitions designed. The element is made entirely of plywood while its supports are made of steel. The infill material used in the same is cotton which is a translucent material and goes well with the context of Gujarat. The element was made in its pure form with the frames and connectors celebrating the original colors of the materials.

Acoustical Control

Acoustical Privacy is a necessity in any office and thus panelling has been done on every desk to give acoustic and visual privacy. The infill materials used in the frames double up as sound absorbers while the gap between the element and the slab also acts as a sound absorption medium. With this private areas like the conference are enclosed with partitions and walls on each side with a door which give the extra need visual and acoustical privacy.

Lighting Design and Specification

The lighting also follows the same system as the partitions where in the central space is open and has large vertical lights mounted from the ceiling. All the other lighting have been wall mounted and follow a peripheral order just like the enclosures. These wall scones provide the spaces with ample amount of light during the hours which do not have natural light.

Climate Control

The site is located in the region which usually has a hot and arid climate and thus proper HVAC system is required to cope up with the burning heat in the city during the summers. Split ACs are placed on the periphery of the office which keep the peripheral spaces cool while the central workspace has a casette AC installed which provides cooling to the entire office space.

79

Approach to Design

80

Amenities Planning

The ameneties were placed purely on a functional basis, where the backoffice was provided next to the reception so that there is hassle free check ins and the pantry was provided in the breakroom so that the employees need not travel in order to enjoy their meals. The mechanical or the server room was placed next to the laboratory since that is the place which would be bearing a major part of the electric or technical output.

Design Process

The design process was majorly influenced by the metaphor used. It started by making of two dimensional layout and spatial prototypes. These prototypes were then combined together by the help of adjacency diagrams. Several block layouts were then prepared in 2D and 3D to figure out the circulation and zoning. After this, the partition and the element was designed which helped in segregation of spaces. Several iterations of the element were then made to suit the metaphor and the language of the space. After this, the furniture was placed in the space according to the metaphor and thematerials and upholstery was then decided to give the final touches to the spaces.
