Atlantic Seaboard
The Atlantic Seaboard, also known as South Africa’s “Riviera,” offers some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in the world. It is a region of white sandy beaches, dramatic mountain and ocean views, friendly people, trendy café’s and a great selection of fine dining establishments. The area stretches from the V&A Waterfront all the way down the west side of the cape peninsula to Cape Point. Whether you are a tranquil whale watcher, sun-seeker, outdoor enthusiast or foodie, there will be something to tickle your fancy and tastebuds! Except for the natural beauty of the majestic slopes of Lion’s Head and the Twelve Apostles, this area is also known to have some of the most expensive real estate in South Africa, and has subsequently become the playground for the rich and famous.
The Atlantic Seaboard is renowned for its terrific eateries and because of the huge selection of restaurants; visitors are guaranteed to find something for every taste. Camps Bay is arguably South Africa’s model capitol, so expect to mingle with the bold and the beautiful! Cape Town South is commonly known as the Cape Flats, because of the flat landscape dominating the area. Don’t miss the open-air summer concerts and picnics on Sundays. You’ll also find the world famous Newlands cricket grounds and rugby stadium in this area. Newlands is home to The Stormers and the Western Province rugby teams. The University of Cape Town (known throughout South Africa as UCT) is South Africa’s oldest university, founded in 1829. The award-winning Cavendish Square in Claremont is one of Cape Town’s most up-market shopping centers, and is home to more than 200 stores, many Cafés, Restaurants and eateries. The elegant suburb of Constantia is one
of Cape Town’s most prestigious suburbs. It’s wine valley is made up of only seven producers. Restaurants in this area: You’ll find many of the top restaurants in the vineyards. Good choices include Buitenverwachting, Simon’s at Groot Constantia and The Square at Vineyard Hotel. Try some Asian and contemporary dishes at Salushi Intaba in Caremont. There are many up market delis, as well as an extensive collection of health shops, and winery restaurants to choose form. Do not miss out on Greens, an informal eatery where locals hang out, and Peddlars on the Bend. For the kids: Groot Constantia is a kid’s haven, and the young ones bring along bikes and toys to play with on the lawns while parents enjoy their food. If you are lucky, the baboons from the nearby mountains will come and show off by running over the lawns! A special kiddies lunch box, including a toy is a great alternative, as it makes for an easy picnic option on the Constantia lawns. Animals are also welcome at Groot Constantia. The Barnyard in Tokai is the ultimate child friendly venue, complete with farm animals, several jungle gyms, swings and play areas.

False Bay
False Bay is a scenic area, with rolling vineyards and beautiful sea views. For the purpose of our guide, the False Bay region stretches from Fish Hoek and Simon’s Town around the False Bay to Strand and ends in Gordon’s Bay. The majestic Hottentots Holland Mountain range dominates the area also known as the Helderberg. The region also includes the vast township, Khayelitsha, and the coastal suburbs and white sandy beaches of Muizenberg, Strand and Gordon’s Bay. If you are interested in the South African township culture, the Lwandle Migrant Labour Museum and African Township Tour Experience will be right up your alley. Be sure not to miss a visit to Muizenberg, with the majestic architecture dating back to Victorian times. One-and-a-half kilometres away is where you will find the scenic suberb of St James. This lovely sea-side town offers tranquil sea views, has a rich history, and beautiful architecture, with buildings dating back to the 1800’s. The quaint St James beach is small, but charming, and the kids can play safely in the rock pools. Whale watching between July and November is a popular past time, and if you are interested in history, the Fish Hoek Valley Museum is a must.
The Helderberg region offers many ways to keep you busy: fishing, horse riding, golfing, quad biking, bird watching, rock climbing, surfing, swimming, ten pin bowling and of course wine tasting! Restaurants in the area: Seafood restaurants are very popular in this region, because of the abundance of fresh produce from the sea. Fish Hoek Galley is not only a great whale spotting post, but offers good value and tasty takeaway and sit-down meals. Fogeys Railway House in Muizenberg and the Brass Bell in Kalk Bay come highly recommended. The Salty Sea Dog is renowned for their tasty fish and chip parcels, a credit crunch alternative to a formal sit down lunch. On the Helderberg side of False Bay you’ll find more great eateries like Berties Moorings and Harbour Lights in Gordon’s Bay For the kids: If you have to entertain the young ones, there are lots to do, visit Monkey Town, just outside Somerset West, the Supertube Waterfront and mini golf facilities in the Strand, or the Gordon’s Bay fun park. The Spur in both Strand and Gordon’s Bay is a safe choice. Why not treat them to fish and chips and a ice cream on the beach? The region have so many great take-away fisheries.

West Coast
The West Coast is undoubtedly the hidden gem in the South African tourism crown. Golden wheat fields welcome you to quaint coastal villages. The friendly, peaceful atmosphere will revive your soul and nature greets you with awesome splendour. The people of the West Coast are people with no frills, they are real, and their love for their region is very evident, they also have a huge respect for the sea, and a big segment of this area is reliant on fishing to make a living. The people of this region are natural story tellers, so take some time and talk to the locals, you will be enriched by their stories about the sea, the folklore and their region as a whole. When visiting this region, you have to eat seafood, the snoek, mussels and crayfish are a way of life and ‘bokkoms’ (salted mullet strung up in bunches and left to dry) is the local delicacy. The region has a number of open-air beach restaurants where seafood fresh from the sea, is cooked on open fires whilst you watch the sunset. Darling is worth a visit, especially in September for its Wild Flower and Orchid show and for its locally produced wines. Do not miss the The West Coast National Park next to Langebaan. Restaurants in this area: The Noisy Oyster in Paternoster is a must visit, Legends in Langebaan is a firm favourite with the locals. Bosduifklip near Lambert’s Bay is a foodie’s dream destination, and the whole family is welcome, they offer a wide variety Sandveld and seafood dishes sizzling off the coals crayfish and mussels, snoek and sweet potato, lamb on the spit, salads, plaasbrood, preserves and sweet dumplings then wash it down with steaming coffee. For the kids: Almost all of the restaurants are child friendly, as this region has a very informal, family oriented vibe to it.

The Winelands, including the towns of Stellenbosch, Paarl, Franschhoek, Wellington, Worcester and Robertson is a tourism hot-spot in the Western Cape. Stellenbosch also boasts an ever growing collection of restaurants to choose from, both on wine farms, and in the town centre.
