History of Paarl

The Khoikhoi and San were the first people to utilise this area. San rock art can still be seen at nearby Wemmershoek and Bainskloof.

Today, Paarl is the third oldest European settlement in South Africa.

Paarl is home to a culturally diverse community. The people of Paarl are descendants of the Khoisan, African and Eastern slaves, Dutch, French Huguenots, Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe, Italian Prisoners of War, and Xhosa migrant labourers.

In the early 1650’s the Dutch East Indian Company settled in Cape Town to provide fresh food and water to their passing ships en-route to the East. They secured fresh meat stock by bartering with the local Khoikhoi.

In 1657 the public treasurer at the new settlement at the Cape of Good Hope, Abraham Gabemma, went searching for new meat resources for the settlement. He saw this giant granite rock glistening in the sun after some rainfall and named it the “Diamond and Pearl” Mountain from which the name Paarl was later derived. The mountain was also called Tortoise Mountain by the Khoikhoi.

In 1687 Governor Simon van der Stel granted the first farms to Dutch settlers on the banks of the nearby Berg River. The fertile soil and the Mediterranean-like climate of this

region provided perfect conditions for farming. The settlers planted orchards, vegetable gardens and vines.

In 1688, the French Huguenots arrived in the Cape. Some of them were given property in the Paarl area.

With their skills and knowledge of winegrowing, they planted vines, which today produce some of the best red wines in the world.

Today the headquarters of the South African wine industry, the KWV, is situated in Paarl. The home of KWV is on one of the earliest farms (La Concorde, as it is known today) to be granted by Governor Simon van der Stel.

In 1975 the Afrikaans Language Monument was unveiled in Paarl to commemorate the First Afrikaans Language Movement that was started in Paarl in 1875. Afrikaans' roots can be traced to three continents, Europe, Asia and Africa, and is approximately 300 years old.

Paarl has the commercial structure of a small city without sacrificing its country atmosphere. In addition to the array of attractions, scenic drives, hiking trails, wineries and excellent restaurants, Paarl houses a number of large agricultural, manufacturing and financial head quarters.

Paarl is the largest town of the Cape Winelands.

As with the rest of the Cape Winelands, a Mediterranean climate prevails and these castle-like mountains force the north-westerly winds of winter to rise and deposit about 650mm of rainfall in the valley annually, as well as some snow on the upper peaks in the heart of winter.

Being a little further from the sea, the temperatures in winter are inclined to drop slightly, but are still temperate, with sunny days between cold fronts.

In summer there are occasional showers, but the ‘Cape Doctor’, as the south-easterly wind is known, blows in off the sea and also helps temper the warmth of the afternoons. The region can get very warm in the latter half of February, when the grapes in the region are being harvested.

Attractions

Paarl is home to a prosperous community, with many well maintained and attractive Cape Dutch houses, beautiful gardens and streets lined with old oak trees. There are many vineyards in and around the residential neighbourhoods adding to the unique character of the town.

The famous 11.2km long Main Street features the Strooidak Church, Paarl Museum, Het Gesticht Church and Gymnasium Primary School. Around the corner from Gymnasium is the Afrikaans Language Museum.

The beautiful homestead and wine farm, Laborie, is situated in Main Street and offers a unique “vineyard-in-town” experience. Laborie was purchased

by KWV in 1972 who restored the buildings to its original glory. The KWV headquarters is also found on Main Street, they have the largest cellar complex in the country, covering an area of 22 hectares.

The elegant Nederburg homestead with its fort-like walls, high ceilings and airy rooms is one of the most recognisable Cape-Dutch buildings in the Western Cape. Completed in 1800, everything in the house tells a story – from the flagstone floor tiles shipped from Europe to the classic furniture collected over the years.

and justice of the Cape Afrikaners and other colonists who provided support, or were sympathetic to, the Boers in the Transvaal and Free State Republics during the Anglo Boer War (1899–1902). This monument is one of its kind in the Western Cape and was unveiled at Laborie Wine Estate on 17 September 2005.

De Poort Heritage Village This newest heritage tourism attraction brings to life the heady days when Paarl was the centre of Southern Africa’s largest transport industry. Its Heritage Centre has fascinating displays of carts and wagons, machinery and tools of yesteryear. Visitors can watch skilled crafters and artisans at work in the Workshop Centre, sign up for a course or buy a quality memento. New attractions offer events in the arena, heritage foods, heritage games, home goods markets and much more. This non-profit community project is a familyfriendly venue close to the N1, off Main road, in Turk street, South Paarl.

The name Mapoggo was taken from a much-loved horse that is buried on the farm. Like the wine, this horse was undoubtedly worthy of praise.

During the Boer War, it saved two patrolling commandos who were caught in a violent storm.

Having lost their bearings, they were led to safety by the trusty Mapoggo, who was later brought to Druk-My-Niet where he lived until the age of 40.

The Druk-My-Niet farm lies at the foothills of the Hawekwa Mountains, next to the historic Hugenot Gedenk School. Over the past 7 years, the farm has been extensively renovated and replanted; the old cellar now boasting an 80tonne state of the art boutique winery. In addition, as members of the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative, winemaker Abraham DeKlerk is busy converting the farm into a fully-fledged organic farm.

Over and above its wines, Druk-My-Niet offers holiday accommodation to anyone needing a getaway.

Their peaceful ambience and uninterrupted views of the Paarl valley can be enjoyed in one of two thatched, self-catering Cape Dutch cottages.

Veenwouden Private Cellar is situated on the northern side of Paarl. Immaculate vineyards, rooted in deep rich soils, hint at the brooding red blends that emanate from the boutique cellar. The vineyards cover an area of some 1,700 hectares within which are a wide variety of soil types. An early morning mist exerts a cooling influence on the vines as well as adding welcome moisture in the non irrigated vineyards, where the grapes are almost entirely handpicked.

Windmeul takes its name from the windmeul, build in 1884, which no longer exists. The Windmeul Wine Cellar was registered in 1944, it now has 46 members.

Visit our new wine centre which boasts conference facilities, wine tasting and sales venue, seminars, functions and weddings on the R44, only a short drive from Cape Town.

Business Much of the attraction of Paarl is to be found in the fact that it has the commercial structure of a small city without sacrificing its country atmosphere. Not in vain is Paarl termed the agricultural capital of the Boland.

Situated in the fruitful and water-rich Berg River Valley, Paarl has a well established industrial sector which relies heavily on industries supplying the needs of agriculture, while the Western Cape Agricultural Union has also established its head office at Paarl.

The Drakenstein Municipality centred in the towns of Paarl and Wellington, is in close proximity to key tourist areas of the Western Cape. The recommended route from Cape Town is the N1 national road. From Cape Town, travel time is approximately 55 minutes.

Drakenstein Tourism supports community tourism / events Meet at Mbekweni where a local guide will take you through his “Kasie” to Chippa’s Place (for traditional African dishes) passing the meat market, spaza shops, créches and men’s hostels (build to accommodate only men during the apartheid regime). Do not forget to get your traditional gear from passionate designers at Kuyasa Sewing Project.

A visit to Ikhwezi art and craft centre where guests can see wool weavers in action and enjoy a walk around the centre in the beautiful food garden can also be arranged.

You can also visit the old slave churches in Bovlei (Wellington) and Het Gesticht (Paarl).

Come to Paarl East where guests will be introduced to church leaders, cultural artists as well as sport lovers. Guests will be entertained by music and the interesting history of the area and will be able to taste traditional dishes from church bazaars.

Visit Butterfly House ‘hope has wings’ an initiative of hospice in a bid to help the vulnerable members of the community.

Here talented guitarists will welcome you. Listen to the interesting stories of the area by senior citizens that are cared for in this beautiful home. Be gloomed by colourful pictures and art craft on display.

Qolothani Makhosikazi Social and Cultural Services combines tradition and modernisation in producing beaded products as part of a Job Creation Project benefiting underprivileged women of Mbekweni. Learn also more about the Zulu culture by attending a Zulu evening with traditional food and beverage.
