www.stevenkentarchitect.com Philip Johnson once said, “Architecture is the art of how to waste space.” In architect Steven Kent’s world, the opposite is true: space is a valuable commodity, where every turn of a corner, every placement of a wall and every opening of a room to the outdoors is essential to the home he is designing. In fact, Kent’s ability to say the most with the least in his architecture has made him one of L.A.’s most celebrated, yet underestimated minimalists today. “To me, modern design is basically honest architecture with no tricks or gimmicks,” explains the builder/architect/real estate broker who once worked with Frank Gehry on the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. “Some architects try to create forms or features for effect, but I feel it’s more important to blend the function with the form and the spatial qualities of the home, as opposed to creating something for a ‘wow’ factor.” That’s not to say that people would not say “wow” when they stepped inside a Kent home. His practical approach—based on his instincts as a builder himself—has produced some of the city’s most inspiring modern homes, punctuated with walls of glass, invisible stairs and pocket doors opening up to gorgeous panoramas of Southern California canyon and ocean. “I have a builder’s perspective, so I’ve learned to be pragmatic and do things that will work,” says the Malibu-based architect. “Nothing will teach you that more than building your own home. It’s easy to sit in an office and come up with complicated, sexy design ideas. But at the end of the day, those ideas still need to be implemented and become a reality.” Kent’s minimalism is fresh air to the newer generations of L.A. who are building and buying homes today. Those buyers tend to prefer a sensible approach to design—one that lets the site, environment and their personal lifestyle speak through the architecture. Green materials, energy-saving elements and how one lives all take precedent over the “wow”—or square footage, for that matter. “In general, the type of people who are attracted to minimalism tend to be very detail-oriented and have very strong opinions about what they want,” he says. “It’s very much a collaborative design process.” As we pull ourselves out of the darkness of the recession in 2013, the idea of taking a home and drilling it down to its essence by eliminating all non-essential items—is a notion that could endure in a city known for glamour and excess. After all, vacant land is not exactly plentiful in Los Angeles. “Most of my clients search for a long time and they can’t find what they want, which is usually why they come to me, ” he says. “But if you can find your modern architectural dream home on the market right now, I would advise you to buy it.”
