MQHA Journal • December 2016 • 2

December 1, 2016 To all MQHA members: As the saying goes, “all good things must come to an end”. The Michigan Quarter Horse Association has produced the Michigan Quarter Horse Journal for almost 50 years and as with everything in this century, more people are relying on technology to obtain their information and fewer advertisers are paying to be included in a printed magazine. The Journal has played an important part in communicating with the membership for many years, but as we are all aware, technology has made print media obsolete. The MQHA Journal Committee has made the difficult decision to cease printing of the magazine effective with the January/February, 2017 issue. It was a decision that was not taken lightly but in the end, both the Committee and the MQHA Board of Directors feel that it is the right decision to protect the Association financially, going forward. At this point, it has been determined that the March/April 2017 issue will be produced and available online, but it will not be printed. Going forward, the Journal will transition to an online blog. All important and necessary information including showbills, patterns and placings will still be found on the website. The blog will provide the membership with board meeting minutes, the President’s Message, the Queen’s letter, youth meeting minutes, articles, member spotlights and so much more that we have been unable to include due to high print costs. The entire scope of these changes will happen over the course of at least 2017. The Committee will continue to work with both the current journal editor and with the company making the online transition. The Committee understands that not everyone has the ability or desire to obtain their information online, therefore, we are asking that you simply contact the office with a phone call, email or send a written note. We will add your name to a list and then can mail you any pertinent information. For members who paid for a Journal subscription with their existing membership, we will automatically extend your membership by two months to make up for the lack of the Journal subscription. We hope that you understand that these changes are necessary to ensure that MQHA continues to be one the biggest and most successful AQHA affiliates in the nation!!

Sincerely,

Tiffany J. Weitzel MQHA President

Audrey Barnes

Audrey Barnes is currently a freshman at Morrice High School. She plays basketball and runs track when she is not riding horses. She is an honor roll student whose favorite subject is math. I asked Barnes to tell me a little bit about her show partner “TC Casual Attire.” She replied, “I show TC Casual Attire, aka Ollie. He is a 2005 sorrel gelding out of Willy Be Invited. I show the all around with him. My favorite class is HUS and even though Ollie is a little bit vertically challenged, we do well in it. We definitely believe in working with what you have and making the best out of it! I also love the equitation and horsemanship classes. We tried western riding this year as well. I have had a great time showing Ollie this year, though I really miss my first equine partner, Here’s Your Captive, aka Captain.” Audrey hopes to one day pursue an education in veterinary medicine and ride while in college.

Anna Bays Traveling Memorial Trophy

The nineteenth presentation of the Anna Bays Memorial Trophy was once again held at the Michigan Quarter Horse Breeders Futurity. I am truly honored to make a special presentation on behalf of the many friends of a very special lady. There are many ways to celebrate a birthday. Doug McLaren Sr. had the good fortune of being the recipient of the Anna Bays Traveling Memorial Trophy on his 70th. He and his wife Sally were congratulated as this year’s winner as they were the breeder of the filly, Touchdown Cheerleader by Mr. Touchdown Kid out of Tranclusion, exhibited by Rick Leek. Doug & Sally will be able to enjoy the beautiful trophy that honors the memory of Anna Bays. February 8th, 2017 will mark 19 years since MQHA has lost a lifetime member and active breeder when Anna Bays, 92, perished when her home in Traverse City caught fire. Anna loved raising her foals and always dreamed of having a futurity winner. Tom Robertson, Jerry Robertson, Jarra Hilliker and Gary Gleason were all trainers that worked for Anna. She shared in a partnership of the stallion SR Ready Conclusion, an own son of Conclusive. Everyone who ever met Anna can tell you how vibrantly she talked about her babies and the Michigan Breeders Futurity. In an effort to honor her memory many of her friends commissioned sculptor Marrita Black of Gainesville, TX to create the bronze trophy which depicts a weanling playfully rearing with a ribbon. The black walnut base has a bronze name plate on the front and individual name plates listing the succession of winners. The trophy is scheduled to travel for twenty years. The winner keeps the actual trophy for one year, and then exchanges it for a commemorative plaque. The award goes to the Michigan breeder whose weanling beats the most horses in his/her halter class in the open division at the Michigan Quarter Horse Breeders’ Futurity. Past winners include Ted Lincoln, Phil Cumper, Robert & Terri Wolf, Denise Pucilowski, Lorraine Barrigar, Diane Hyde, Judy and John Van Dyke, Bob Sherman, Dr Kenneth & Diane Main, two time winners Michael & Suzanne Cramer and seven time winners Steve & Kelli Jensen.

2017 Board of Director Candidates Kathy Christensen To the MQHA membership, I am requesting your support to continue as your MQHA board member. I have been an MQHA member since the mid 1990’s and have been a board member for several years. I started in this position, serving as your Queen Contest Chair. I spent my time investigating and interviewing previous Queens, to create a better event. I continue striving to find great prizes and to support and assist the Queen during her reign. This year I also chair the Membership & Publicity Committee and the Website & Journal Committee. As chair of these committees, I have diligently monitored the Facebook MQ Marketplace, and continued to share pictures thru the official MQHA Facebook page. I have worked to update the MQHA website, bringing relevant information to the membership thru a more functional and easy to navigate website. My greatest desire and deep passion is to continue to grow MQHA, to promote and preserve MQHA for future generations. Just a little about me personally, as a territory manager for the largest full service dental dealer in the world, Henry Schein, I manage an area in West Michigan, taking care of the needs of dental offices. I have a gelding, “Guy,” who I adore and love to ride and show, and I have two dogs, Bri and Bentley. If you will kindly re-elect me to the MQHA board, I will continue to focus, and work for the benefit and best interest of MQHA. Thank you for your support.

Megan Hirschman I have been an active MQHA member and exhibitor for over 16 years and a member of the MQHA Board for 6 years. I currently serve as the Finance Chair and Executive Committee member. I show in All-Around Pleasure events at nearly every show throughout the year, and have experience supporting and working at Speed, Cutting, Roping and Rodeo events. As a current MQHA Board Member I have strived to keep the exhibitors needs in mind. I have experience in both auditing and creating financial documentation, fundraising for a non-profit organization, and helping support recruiting and membership in the organization. I would be honored and appreciate the opportunity to serve on the MQHA Board of Directors again this year with your support. Good luck to all of the exhibitors in 2017!

Mike Huntoon My name is Mike Huntoon, and I’ve been an MQHA member for 16 years. I train and show halter horses with my wife, Jen, who also shows in the Western Pleasure. We live in Mt. Pleasant. I was on the MQHA board in 2005-2006, working on the Harbor Classic and Futurity committees and I’ve also helped with the SSS. I’d love to represent you on the board once again, and do whatever I can to make MQHA the best AQHA affiliate in the country.

MQHA By Cat Guenther, Youth Reporter

For this month’s youth report, youth exhibitors who attended the 50th Annual All American Quarter Horse Congress were asked to answer questions reflecting on their experiences. These were the questions that were presented: 1. If you had to sum up your Congress experience in one word, what would it be? 2. Were there any specific challenges you had to overcome? Any surprises? 3. Did you achieve a goal, if so what goal? What is your favorite memory from this year’s Congress? Grace Gasper: “I would say in one-word Congress was “inspiring.” A specific challenge I had would be recognizing Congress was just another show for Yella and I. Showing at the Congress was truly one of the best experiences I’ve had. I’m thankful for the guidance from my trainer, who helped prepare me to show at this level. Yella started as a walk/jog horse for me. Our goal over the past year was to be competitive in the all-around events. In the 2016 show season, we became a team built on trust and respect. Going into Congress, one of my goals was to have a personal best ride. I went into the ring with the mind-set that we would do all we could to get our number written down for a call back. Yella and I did just that in two events. There are many wonderful memories from Congress. I loved spending endless time with my horse show family, whether it was late night rides or cheering them on in the ring. Everyone was always there for one another. I will also forever be blessed with the experience Yella and I had in the show ring. He was my trusted partner who gave his very best. I'm very excited to return to Congress next year.” Peyton Baxter: “The word I’d use would be “fantabulous.” One of my challenges was that I had to stay focused and work hard because it’s really easy for me to get distracted. Another challenge was trying to not have nerves before I went in. I took a couple deep breaths and said “it’s just another show” which helped a lot. One of my favorite memories was when I was the last one in the arena. I flopped down on my horse’s neck and he reared up! I thought he was fine and he reared again! The biggest surprise would be my win at the Congress. A goal of mine was to have good rides and maybe make it back in a finals or two. I did achieve my goals!” Lily Atkinson: “If I had to sum up my Congress experience is one word it would be “hectic.” I brought two horses this year. My all arounder I show MQ and my barrel horse. There was literally always something I had to do or somewhere I had to be. Some challenges that I had to overcome would probably be myself. It’s hard to get yourself in the correct mind-set for the Congress. You are competing against all these girls with the big names and you end up constantly comparing yourself to them. You just have to believe in yourself. One goal I had for the whole season leading up to the Congress, was to be able to compete in the trail at the Congress. We have been working really hard at it. We didn't place in the top 15, but we did get 13th NSBA in the Novice Trail. My favorite memory would probably have to be when I got 9th in the NYATT barrels. Even before I actually showed MQ, I was on the NYATT team for a couple years. Back then, (2013) I didn’t have enough experience to seriously compete with the kids in the barrel classes. It felt good to actually come to the Congress and know I would be competitive this year, and even better when I placed and all our hard work paid off.” Emme Lantis: “I would use the word “magnificent” to describe my experience at Congress. One challenge I had to overcome was when I was in trail and Billy was scared of the judges and the trees. It was my first time showing trail at Congress, but Billy and I went through the whole thing acting like we won it. My goal was to make it the best Congress possible. It was wonderful to see so many people again! Being on the NYATT team was an amazing experience. My favorite memory was just being down there. I think of how lucky I am to have my trainer, Michelle Warda and Morgan! They were such a big help for getting me down there. I’m also lucky that my mother and grandparents were down there to support me every step of the way. This was my last show with (Billy) Charlies Lil Leaguer. It has been great with him. I will never forget him. I can’t wait to start again next season and see my horse show family!” Katherine West: “Spectacular would be the word I’d use to describe Congress. A challenge of mine was handling my showing, schoolwork, and AAU basketball tryouts. A goal that I achieved was placing in both the 12-14 Showmanship and the Western Pleasure. I was 8th overall, NSBA Pleasure 13th overall, and 11th in NSBA Showmanship. Celebrating my birthday with all of my friends and family had to have been my favorite memory.”

MQHA Happy Holidays friends and fellow MQHA members! What a year it has been! Can you believe 2016 is almost behind us? For some, this last month will be spent attending a few last shows, securing national titles and nishing up rookie and novice years before advancing to the next division. What an exciting time! And what a magical time. A time to spend with family and friends. Yes, the hustle and bustle of the Holidays can create some crazy schedules, dashing from party to party, shopping, wrapping, and decorating. Amidst all the Holiday activity, I’m sure there are some wonderful Holiday traditions. One of my favorite and most meaningful traditions comes from my moms’ family. Every year on Christmas eve, we clean all of our livestock stalls and feed everyone extra, including a few treats. Our family believes that on this night the animals kneel to pray, just as they did the night Christ was born. What are your family traditions? Have you shared those with your kids? Maybe it’s time to create some new ones, or maybe you didn’t even realize you do specic things every year that just became a tradition for no real reason (aren’t those fun?). I have a favorite joke this reminds me of. Daughter to mother “Mom why do you always cut the end off of the Christmas ham before you put it in the oven?” Mother “It's family tradition. I do it because your grandmother always did, so we’ll have to ask her why.” Daughter to grandmother “Grandma why is it a family tradition to cut the end off of the Christmas ham before it goes in the oven?” Grandmother “That's not a tradition! I didn’t have a pan big enough for it to go in!” I never claimed to be a good joke teller, but I think you get the idea. I hope this brief message leaves you thinking about what the Holiday season means to you and yours, and that you take the time to slow down and enjoy all the gifts that surround us every day. Tiffany Weitzel, MQHA President www.MIQuarterHorse.com

Best Wishes For Your Holiday Season!

summary as of August 9. Rob Kirkpatrick made a motion to accept the summary report. Morgan Warda seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. PRESIDENT'S REPORT: President Weitzel congratulated the Harbor Classic committee on a successful show and thanked all the volunteers. She then asked Kris Woroniecki to step out of the meeting so her contract could be discussed. Tiffany reviewed with the board, Kris's current salary and main duties and then presented an updated salary to the board, removing Kris from being the horse show manager. Current horse show management prices were reviewed from other managers as well as executive secretary salaries from other similar nonprofit organizations of the same size. The new salary will go into place January 1, 2017. OFFICE REPORT: Kris Woroniecki stated that the office staff will now be focusing on the upcoming Futurity. She also discussed the problem that Andi Knapp is having getting the software that Northern Michigan QHA's new show management used to run that show. It is taking a lot more time than anticipated to make the conversion. As a result, there will be a delay in getting the information on the website on top of the additional expenses being incurred in time spent. She will report back at the next meeting on the result of this project. COMMITTEE REPORTS HARBOR CLASSIC: Kris Woroniecki gave a preliminary financial report for the Harbor Classic. Entries were up by 93. Campers and stalls were down slightly from 2015. The AQHA approval fee increased by 50%. The judges' expenses were up almost $3000 due to the new format. The grounds cost was up due to an increase in the stall fee and camping fee. Temporary stalling costs were down as a result of fewer stalls being rented overall with more stalls being used in the race barns and in the outside stalls. Income was down about $3000 and expense was up about $3000 resulting in about a $6000 difference over the 2015 event. JOURNAL AND WEBSITE: Submitted by Kathy Christensen Met with Chris Frantz at the Harbor Classic show. Chose sweatshirts, shirts and jackets with colors to be offered on the General Store page. MQHA also has several different logos to choose from that will be listed as options. #1 – Spur Logo #2 – MQHA Square #3 – Michigan Quarter Horse rectangle #4 – Enjoy the Ride #5 – Easter Logo #6 – Summer Series #7 – Harbor Logo If Harvest and Futurity committees create a specific logo, these can be added as options for members.

Spoke with Amy Atkinson about creating a link site for the membership to order MQHA custom items with Chris Frantz. This link will automatically switch over to another site when someone clicks on the General Store icon. This site will be custom created to offer the specific items we have already picked out with Chris, and members can then choose the custom logo from the many offerings we have. Also spoke with Amy Atkinson about my frustration with the website being created on the Dreamweaver platform instead of Word Press, which I requested. I mentioned the quote we had to flip the website to Word Press and how much we were paying monthly to update and maintain it. She was going to check with her associates to see how much time and money it might be if they were to handle this task. She was going to get back to me with this later. FB MQHA Marketplace has 6208 members; MQHA Official page has 3025 likes. Keep in mind MQHA has 698 members. The July MQHA Journal was produced with 24 pages. Total expenses $2834.93. Total income $1080. Net loss on this issue $1,754.93. These figures do not take into account the internal billing of pages to different committees. MEMBERSHIP AND PUBLICITY: submitted by Kathy Christensen Submitted article about the Harbor Classic Show with photos to AQHA for the Journal and website. Submitted same article and photos to Horse Circuit news. Posted pictures on the FB page. Sent pictures to Katie to update on the website. As of 8-8-16 MQHA has 698 members. QUEEN: submitted by Kathy Christensen MQHA crowned 2016 Queen Andrea Armbruster at the Harbor Classic show on Saturday July 9th. The Queen sponsors provided $800 in money, and $2669.00 in prizes. Prior to the Queen's contest, Andrea did represent Michigan as the 2015 Queen at the Triple Challenge Futurity. On Friday afternoon, July 8th, Queen Andrea held the 2016 Princess contest. Ten beautiful young ladies were hoping to be the next Princess or Jr. Princess. Congratulations to the 2016 Princess Ashley Rytman and Jr. Princess Dana Moody. There were great prizes for all and special crowns for the new Princesses. On Saturday afternoon the Queen and Princesses went to the beach for a few pictures. I always really enjoy this time taking pictures of these beautiful ladies. These pictures were shared with the membership on FB and were sent to AQHA and Horse Circuit News. I have the Congress Queen's contest application, and request the President's signature on these papers. I also have requested from the office a check for the entry fee. The 2016 entry fee is $650. This is significantly higher than last year, the 2015 entry fee was $375. The 2016 Congress Queen's Contest is October 18-23. 2016 Queen sponsors! MQHA September 6, 2016 Meeting Minutes, cont. Megan Hirschman presented the AR and AP summary as of September 6. Bob Milks made a motion to accept the summary report. Kathy Christensen seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. VICE PRESIDENT'S REPORT: No report OFFICE REPORT: No report COMMITTEE REPORTS CONVENTION: Sasha Glover stated that the Convention Committee has decided to go back to the Ramada in Lansing. The locations that were contacted are still too expensive and we would need to raise prices too much. The dates for the Convention will be January 13-15, 2017. He has requested the contract from the hotel. HARBOR CLASSIC: Jeff West stated that AQHA notified MQHA that there was an ineligible rider in the rookie youth at the Harbor Classic. The disqualifications effect the high point rookie youth as well as a circuit award. Jeff has authorized another high point award be ordered while requesting reimbursement from the parent whose child was ineligible. A motion that the cost of the award come from general fund was made by Tom Powers. Chris Perniciaro seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Bob Milks made a motion that the MQHA office write a letter to the parent of the ineligible rider to request reimbursement for the award and to include the

disqualification letters in the correspondence as well as the exact amount needing to be refunded. Jill Finley seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Jeff West made a suggestion that in order to be eligible to receive a rookie or novice circuit award or high point, the leveling paperwork must be in the show office and verified prior to the award being given out. HARVEST CLASSIC: submitted by Meggen Baynes We have most of the ring and gate staff in place for the Harvest Classic. Kevin Cubitt and Starr Reis will be the main ring stewards. The Youth Kids will assist with Trail Set-Up and Grooming. I have a few different people lined up for scribing. Barb Foster will work the gate. We have selected the All-Around and Reserve All-Around Awards. They will be MQHA gift certificates. After the Futurity, we will evaluate what we will need for first place awards. I need to contact MGLQHA to see if they are still doing a Silent Auction. We will do a Baked Potato Bar on Saturday and I will put out a donation jar. Details to come on that. YOUTH: Jeff West reviewed some information that was sent out to the Board. Megan Hirschman made a motion that the letters of intent be reviewed to create a document/contract for eligibility for all youth teams for 2017 which will be approved by the executive committee. Bob Milks seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Jeff also discussed the Youth showing on school days. MQHA Hello MQHA members – as always, I hope this finds you all well. What a crazy, yet fantastic year 2016 has been! It feels as though just yesterday, we turned the page and the year had just started. I would like to congratulate all of the finalists, Top Tens, Reserve Champions and Champions at both the All-American Quarter Horse Congress, and World Shows. It’s great to have such wonderful exhibitors and horses representing our state! On my out-of-state travels as Queen, I’ve been told countless times that exhibitors from Michigan are some of the more competitive individuals in AQHA, and I could not be more proud of that statement! I would like to congratulate two special ladies who, early in July accomplished a dream of becoming an MQHA Princess, but have now achieved Congress Top Tens! Such an amazing job by both Princess, Ashley Rytman and Jr. Princess, Dana Moody. Dana earned 6th place in a very tough Small Fry Showmanship class, and Ashley received 4 Top Tens, including the Congress Championship in Small Fry Western Pleasure! Congratulations again to both Princesses and all Michigan exhibitors, all of your hard work is paying off! Over 18,000 entries showed at this year’s Quarter Horse Congress. 19 ladies, including myself, from across the United States, put their boots up for a week in Columbus, Ohio to compete for Queen. We were interviewed by a panel of 3 judges, completed a written test on the entire AQHA rulebook, and on the Friday of Congress Queen week, we finally got to showcase our Horsemanship talents. Take all 3 portions of the contest, add in rehearsals, fittings, practicing the Horsemanship pattern, studying for the test, a food tour of Columbus, the NC4K Fashion Show, thanking all of the Congress sponsors, and it equals all of us trying to find enough time to quickly eat something or get a wink of sleep. I’m not complaining by any means, because I would not have dreamed about spending that crazy, amazing, busy week with any other group of women. This year’s placings were close, and it was commented by the judges that they are proud and thrilled to see where we, as examples of the next generation of horse women, will take our association in the future. I would like to congratulate newly crowned Congress Queen, Amy Brown, for your passion is unrivaled, and I wish you the best of luck in the following year! For those of you who haven’t yet heard, I placed Top Ten in every category - 4th in Queen’s Horsemanship, 10th in the interview, and 9th on the written test - and I placed 9th overall in the competition. During my interview, I got to sit down and be questioned by three lovely women, including the honorable and first Quarter Horse Congress Queen, Kim Serbin. This year in the horsemanship, my horse Val, gave me an amazing pattern! I owe my 9th place finish to a lot of people who have always been cheering me on. Thank you to my parents, grandparents, Sandy House, Kathy Christensen, Prime Quarters, the Carter family, the Campbell family, MQHA, and to all of the sponsors of the Michigan Quarter Horse Queen’s contest: Warren, Laurie & Corinne English, Jack & Nancy Christensen, AnaMarie Cooper, Millbrook Tack, Lope for Hope & Rene Kozlowski, Bodacious Cowgirl & Wendy Cook, Kathy Williams Tails, Chris Frantz & Chris’s Custom Creations, Wire Horse, Eye of the Horse Photography & Jadine Bruner, Lexi Heny, Christa Baldwin, MaryBeth Hegedus, Jim & Joni Roth, Corlinda Huffman, Kris Woroniecki, Cowgirl Rocz, Cassidy’s Casuals & Brenda Arnold, Bob Sherman, Bonnie Bailey, LouAnn Thompson, Karla VanderPloeg, Kay Stanek, Tom Powers, and Audrey Winter & 3M. And another huge, huge, thank you to those Quarter Horse Congress Queen sponsors that have always helped Queen Week move more smoothly! Over the next few months as Queen, I have a few more events to attend before the next crowning ceremony in July, 2017. I hope to see you at some of the stops. I’ll be helping pass out year end awards at the MQHA Convention, following that will be the annual MQHA Tack Sale, and the Michigan Horse Expo shortly after. I’m also going to be making more Queen appearances at shows like the Easter EggStravaganza, the Spartan Spectacular, Summer Series and the Tom Powers Triple Challenge Futurity. In between my stops, I will be planning the details for the next MQHA Princess contest. I hope that everyone has a wonderful holiday season spent with those you love, whether they have two legs or four! I look forward to seeing you in January! I’d like to end by asking you to take a moment of silence for the wonderful people and horses that we have most unfortunately lost within our membership this past year. Safe Travels and Happy Trails! Best Wishes, Andrea Armbruster www.MIQuarterHorse.com
