An Introduction Introducing Mono, a lightweight, ultra high performance, road legal sports vehicle designed and manufactured using the latest racing technology. Aimed at drivers who seek a purist driving experience and for whom design, engineering excellence and performance are of paramount importance, Mono is an aggressive design that sets new benchmarks in the small, but elite segment of radical, lightweight sports cars. “I dreamed about creating a road car with the same level of intuitive direct control as a Formula racing car; a car that could be seen in the pits at a race track or on a British country lane and looked like the future. I wanted it to be high tech and totally fresh in its approach, a car for people who want to feel a connection with their car and be really involved in the character of how it drives. It had to be something they were consistently excited by and would experience pride in owning. In short, Mono is a totally immersive experience, from start to finish. Ian Briggs – Design Director, BAC

The single central-seat gave our designers and project engineers the ultimate blank canvas on which to assemble their dream. The enclosed front and exposed mechanical rear typifies the unique appearance of Mono. The design aesthetic is intended to combine sculpted, sleek, organic forms to provide an emotional, human connection juxtaposing the technical, mechanical elements of the car. Nothing embodies this look better than Bjork‘s award winning music video 'All is Full of Love' which would provide inspiration throughout the design process.

While this futuristic vision runs throughout Mono's appearance it was fundamental to our designers that form follow function on all aspects of the car. The necessity to gain access to the central driving position and adjustable dampers as well as providing clean airflow to the radiators and engine are just some of the factors on which Mono's architecture is built. “...the BAC Mono, incredibly singular of purpose and possibly the ultimate of ‘form follows function‘ automotive design.“ Charlie Turner, Editor-in-Chief, TopGear Magazine

"it’s a brilliant concept, with the kind of instinctive appeal that stops you in your tracks. The styling has a perfectly proportioned completeness that’s rare – magical even – with the kind of gut-feel rightness that Italian design studios yearn for." Senior Writer, Mark Walton - CAR Magazine

Centre of Attention Above all else Mono has been designed to optimise the driving position – in the middle, central to the wheels, and the balance of the car. Mono’s central driving position makes the driver an integral component of the car, creating an unparalleled synergy between man and machine. With this in mind, each customer is fitted for his or her seat, pedal reach and preferred driving position.

DISCOVER The Detail BAC have partnered some of the best known names in high-performance and race engineering to develop the complete drivers’ car. Engineers from Cosworth, Hewland, Sachs, AP Racing and Kumho used their knowhow, experience and attention to detail to enhance the capabilities of Mono. With a high-strength carbon fibre composite construction over a steel chassis (with FIA compliant rollover structure), Mono is similar to the construction principles used in a DTM race car.

"...it’s the Mono’s sheer quality that sets it apart. This is a pocket-sized masterpiece of engineering." Senior Writer Sam Philip, TopGear Magazine

Engineering Excellence Powering Mono is a 2.3 litre, 280bhp four-cylinder power plant built by Cosworth, a name synonymous with success in top-level Motorsport all the way up to F1. Each engine is individually hand built at Cosworth Limited in Northampton, England and includes a bespoke port bored barrel throttle inlet system, performance cams, custom valve springs, race proven dry sump and a racing engine management system. In addition the engine also features forged pistons and con rods, ported cylinder heads and bespoke valve train components. The engine is mounted longitudinally to optimise the centralised balance of the car and the dry sump system allows the engine to sit as low as possible.

PRECISION

Components Weight in Mono is focused into its low centre of gravity, featuring a fully-adjustable pushrod suspension system with damping elements made by SACHS Racing, while retardation and stopping ability comes courtesy of AP Racing.

"The detail in its engineering is as exquisite as it is obvious. It has a shameless quality to its construction in that almost everything that holds it together is on display. You don’t so much look at its pushrod suspension system as ogle it." Editor-at-large, Steve Sutcliffe, Autocar Magazine

Chassis A primary concern where nothing has been left to chance. Constructed using high-strength carbon fibre composite around a steel safety cell, Mono meets FIA Formula One regulations for rollover protection (ROPS) and is fully legal for road use.

Breathe Easy The key to power is in allowing the engine to breathe freely. Developed by BAC engineers in collaboration with our technical partners, Mono breathes through a state of the art carbon fibre airbox and a flow optimised stainless steel exhaust system. The exhaust system is fabricated using a combination of 340L Stainless Steel and 321 Stainless Steel/Titanium alloy. Featuring a compact design and IVA compliant silencer the system culminates in a carbon fibre tip centrally exiting through the rear wing. r

Aerodynamics Mono has been optimised and developed using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) in conjunction with the University of Stuttgart’s FKFS department, a world leading automotive research centre. Designed to be as aerodynamically efficient as possible, the benefits are twofold. Mono offers supercar levels of top speed, whilst also delivering handling precision and balanced stability that complements the outstanding levels of mechanical grip on offer.

Scientifically Tested By using CFD, BAC were able to carry out a multitude of test cases, which through constant experimentation and optimisation led to the final design you see today. The benefit of this scientific approach is that the aerodynamic device often works counterintuitively. One such example is the front winglet shown below which sits with a positive angle of attack, but results in a net-reduction in overall lift and drag. The wing has a number of benefits; it provides moderate downforce, neutralises lift and cleans the airflow into the f1-style side-pod radiators, improving their efficiency as a result.

Optimising Mono BAC designed in collaboration with our technical partners, Sachs Race Engineering and Eibach Springs, the suspension geometry has been optimised through a process of CAD, spring and damper rates refined on the Sachs Race Engineering Four Poster Rig and Road/ Track development. Mono‘s suspension settings are fully adjustable, allowing the driver to fine tune vehicle setup. Careful efforts have been made to reduce the unsprung mass and the use of specially developed bushes, ball joints and needle roller bearings have kept parasitic and frictional losses to a minimum.

A Study in Functionality Mono’s design and engineering team left no stone unturned when it came to producing the ultimate road and track car. The carbon fibre storage box provides ample space for a helmet or a weekend bag for trips away, whilst the storage tray provides a handy space for small items. Once the tray is removed it allows access to the adjustable pedal box. In total, they were able to create 80 litres of overall storage space without compromising on the cars architecture or functionality.

HAND BUILT IN THE UK Made for You

Assembled by our skilled technicians at BAC’s dedicated facility, we bring together the finest components to create a truly extraordinary machine. Drawing on their vast experience in the assembly and preparation of elite performance cars, our teams exacting standards ensure that Mono has been built with the care and quality you expect.

Man and Machine As unique as it is intoxicating, Mono was designed to fulfil the entire driving experience. An object so inspirational, that just preparing to get behind the wheel is as memorable an event as driving. Whether it be the sensational grip at the apex of a corner, the way the suspension configuration provides superb handling characteristics, or the breath-taking acceleration, Mono is a truly special car. “Never have I driven a road car that feels so connected or so clearly hard-wired into the part of the brain that deals with, and delights in, the business of driving." Steve Sutcliffe, Editor-at-Large, Autocar

To the Track and Back Mono is a car that has the ability to make a trip along a snaking country road as memorable as a hot lap around Brands Hatch, Silverstone or the NĂźrburgring. With up to 100mm of total suspension travel Mono offers exceptional compliance without compromising handling precision, making it ideal for B roads or absorbing the impact of race track kerbs. Furthermore the suspension settings are fully adjustable, allowing the driver to fine tune vehicle setup. That versatility combined with pulsating performance, state-of-the-art technology and advanced build and design all help to create a true supercar for the 21st Century.

"Mono requires a recalibration of your brain to deal with its physics-warping abilities: brake deeper, turn in later, get on the power earlier. Darting from apex to apex with joyous, weightless agility – gearchanges firing like buckshot – this is a supernaturally good track car." Senior Writer Sam Philip, TopGear Magazine

HANDS-ON Interface Leading developer of engine management and display systems GEMS provided the ECU, GCU and steering wheel display. Everything the drivers needs is located on the bespoke BAC designed steering wheel. The unique touch-sensitive engine start button, gear change and instrumentation are all accessed via the removable wheel, and like an F1 car allows complete control from the central driving position. You can also use it to switch between road and race modes. The totally bespoke design has produced something special which leaves a clean cockpit free of clutter, and stands out from its rivals in terms of quality and ease of use.

FIRST The Wheels O.Z. Racing has used technology derived directly from their experience in Formula 1 and worldwide motorsport to develop the 17“ V70a Alleggerita HLT wheels found on Mono. HLT (High Light Technologies) combines lightweight alloys with great resistance. A process known as ‘channel coating’ achieves a wheel with a technical characteristic more akin to that of a forged wheel, the result of which is a lighter wheel that does not adversely effect the maximum sustainable load.

CONTACT The Tyres In keeping with the race developed components, tyre manufacturer Kumho developed a special version of their highly acclaimed Ecsta V70A road rubber to meet Mono’s unique requirements. The winner of a recent Autobild comparison test against its nearest competition, the V70a is recognized for its all-round capabilities and excellent track day credentials.
