President’s Visit THE
President
of Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador Dr. Vianne Timmons has spent the past few months visiting many areas of Newfoundland and Labrador. In August she travelled to the Coast of Bays region with Memorial Vice President (Marine Institute) Glenn Blackwood to speak with business and community leaders, see major projects in development, and understand what the future could hold for the area. Mowi Canada East was pleased to spend some time with the President and MI Vice President, and took the opportunity to highlight exciting developments within our own operations, as well as the growth of C O NTINU E D ON PA G E 2

THE MFN’S AUNTI MALI SERVICE VESSEL
The Miawpukek First Nation brings a great deal to the partnership to make net cleaning at site possible – specifically, they provide a state of the art vessel from which NL Aqua Services operate an AKVA ROV, as well as several of the personnel required to operate the ship and pilot the ROV. Shayne McDonald, Executive Director of Netukulink Fisheries Ltd. (the company that oversees MFN’s sea based ventures,) interviewed with INSITE to discuss specifics of their vessel, and the lead role they play when work is done on the water.

the current opportunity being our joint response to the ‘in-situ’ net cleaning needs of Mowi Canada East,” noted Mr. McDonald. “We had Tri-Nav Marine Design group in St. John’s design a purpose built ship for net cleaning service and then had the vessel built by the Harbour Grace Ocean Enterprises. It’s a 48 foot vessel with special features like thrusters designed for good maneuverability around cage sites, a nine tonne crane, an ROV control station, and good accommodations for all the crew spending time at sea.” The new vessel not only enabled MFN to take advantage of an economic opportunity – it also created an opportunity to celebrate a respected elder from the community. “We named the vessel ‘Aunt Mali’ in honor of an elder who is no
longer with us… my grandmother in fact,” noted Mr. McDonald. “Not only was she mother and grandmother to many mariners in the community, and a proud supporter of our involvement in the fishery, but she also worked as a cleaning person in area schools for many years. The school board got a new floor cleaning machine which was state-of-the-art at the time, and it gave a lot of people trouble when they tried to operate it. But not Aunt Mali – she mastered it. Given the function of this new boat in the marine environment, employing 30 people in a cleaning role, we thought it was fitting to name it after her.” The new vessel and the specialized ROV

Indigenous communities and benefit coastal communities, which is why we see this ‘in-situ’ service opportunity as a good fit within our business,” noted Mr. McDonald. “And we see more opportunities for the future.” Boyd Pack agrees, noting “We’re optimistic that the industry is only beginning in Newfoundland and Labrador, and we are positioned to give good service. So long as we stay ready to meet industry requirements as they develop here and throughout Atlantic Canada, we will be able to capitalize… and I think we’ve only scratched the surface of the opportunity.”
