There’s more to merry old London than meets the eye. If you think you’ve seen everything the city has to offer to the lonely traveller, then think again. To really experience London at its very roots (please excuse the pun–but it was intended), you ought to try the city sights below ground – literally! Here are some of the fun and interesting attractions that you may have missed because you search just wasn’t deep enough.

The Underground Mail Rail A postman’s job is never easy nowadays – well it wasn’t easy back in London’s Victorian era either, glad to know nothing has changed. However, the city had an interesting and unique solution to the ton of mail that needed delivery – an underground rail system. It opened up to the public in 2017 and the ride begins in Euston and is part of the exhibits of the Postal Museum. It will be a 15 minute underground ride through a kilometre of tunnels.

Crossrail Relics The Museum of London Docklands features relics from the old Elizabeth Line which features everything from a mammoth’s tooth to skulls from the plague pits. The exhibit will give you a glimpse of stories that you don’t hear every day from tourist guides.

War Bunkers Want to know how it felt like to be in the war room with Winston Churchill in WWII? Here’s your chance. The Map Room has remained intact and underground since they shut the place down in 1945. You even have the guide in full regale as you go through the exhibits.

Greenwich Foot Tunnel This is no less than an architectural marvel. Engineers constructed a tunnel that ran underwater. This tunnel was built in 1902 and you can still walk its length to get to the Docklands.

Lost Rivers Ever heard of the Tyburn or even the Fleet? These were once glorious rivers that traversed London. You can still hear them and hear the waters flow underneath all the concrete. Expert guide Paul Talling will walk you through the river line above ground just to show where these rivers flow, which can leave you awestruck.

Ghost Stations Are you fond of eerie corridors and ghastly looking platforms that can make your hairs stand up? The London Transport Museum features all the abandoned underground stations via the Hidden London tours. You will even see where Churchill hunkered down while bombs were going off in the city above.

Note that these attractions are near budget hotels in central London, which makes them quite convenient. Need to find a budget hotel in Kensington? If you are looking for great value in the city hub then we highly recommend Mowbray Court Hotel. They provide great offers and the place is strategically located near the above mentioned attractions.
