Contents The Your Move team has been busily putting together this special, bumper edition to include the Go supplement, with everything you need for when you’re about town. As always, we’ve been sourcing our pick of the property market, with the best to rent or buy. Redrow’s New Heritage homes in Garston are on the table when I share Thai tapas with Christine Aitken at the Palm Sugar Lounge, and Jon Kearney interviews Marco Pierre-White about cooking up a storm in Aughton. In the Go supplement we preview the pick of the best club nights, plays, concerts, gigs and comedy, and, of course, don’t forget to add us on Facebook.

Rethink recycling:

a regional perspective Recycled materials have caused quite a stir in recent times, for their appearances on the catwalk no less than in the headlines. From creating beautiful, unusual, or just quirky items for the home out of old, unwanted goods and material, to recycling paper, cans, glass and plastic for reuse across the manufacturing industry, it’s no longer a case of China having a monopoly on recycling - UK firms, companies in our area, are also getting in on the act. RECYCLING has a number of benefits for business and for consumers, from saving energy and resources, to cutting costs. Kerbside collections of household waste paper, glass and plastic have been commonplace for a good while across the UK, many have wondered how their carefully sorted piles have made a difference to the environment – and whether and how the recycled materials will appear once more on supermarket shelves. As we’ve read in the national press on other occasions, glass dropped into kerbside collections is not usually returned to the supermarkets as a glass bottle. For this to happen, a ‘rinse and reuse’ culture is needed – much in the way that the doorstop dairy service collects empty glass bottles after completing the milkround. When glass is processed, depending on the area in which it is collected and the companies located there, it may reappear in a number of manifestations, such as a road surfacing mixture. The dilemma then, is to ensure that our good intentions in recycling are of benefit to all. There is obviously a limit on the demand for road surfacing, and a demand for more glass bottles among food and drink manufacturers – and weighing up the costs and profits, energy required in the processing, is something which UK businesses are now being encouraged to do. WRAP, the Waste & Resources 28 Your Move

Action Programme, has recently made headlines stressing the importance of quality in the recycling industry. While one man’s trash may be another’s treasure, an understanding of and a firm approach to quality controls in recycling is the only way to make the business profitable to those concerned. A key finding in WRAP’s most recent study was that three quarters of those questioned do not believe that the UK is currently extracting the best possible value from its recovered materials, and a seminar saw speakers from the industry focus on quality as key to beating off the competition in a tough economy. In Liverpool and the Merseyside area, a number of firms are active in the recycling process, purchasing recyclable material to convert into new goods. Smile Plastics in Southport purchases recycled plastic material to create plastic sheets, which kitchen and bathroom manufacturers then use in worktops and fittings. A variety of polymer types are needed to create the various sheets needed, so the recycling processes include collecting, baling, sorting, and cleaning the materials before they are granulated, reduced in size, and the melt processing and formulation and sale of the new product takes place. When the plastics are sorted into various grades, clear plastic fizzy drinks bottles are separated from the ‘squeezy’ sort, so that the various

HOT TOPIC components are kept purer, and therefore stronger for re-use. Originally, the company began using plastic detergent, shampoo and milk bottles – and these are still a large part of Smile Plastics’ raw materials. When the plastics processors buy the recyclable material, it has the appearance of multi-coloured cornflakes, which are then measured and put into a large mould in the hydraulic press. As the plastic does not need to be completely melted to be remoulded, no noxious fumes are produced, and the energy used is between 50 and 70 per cent of the energy that would be needed to create sheets from virgin materials. For every ton of plastic recycled, 1.5 tons of CO2 are saved. When you consider the amount of plastic needed in new kitchens and bathrooms in our area alone, and add to that the additional products available form Smile Plastics, then the business model is clearly a workable one, contributing to the local economy and the environment. A testimonial posted on the website from one keen art GCSE student shows how the firm helps out those with special requests for recycled plastic products – in this case, help sourcing plastics for an original school project -boosting a wider understanding of the recycling industry among members of the public, and contributing to society at large. Eco-Glass is a social enterprise based in Liverpool city centre,

currently in the process of securing funding, to produce hand-crafted kiln-fused pieces from recycled bottles and window glass. EWR Recycling, a sister organisation, sources glass bottles from the pubs and bars in the city and window

Caz adds: “By working with local organisations, as we do, it’s not only less wasteful in that more of the resources are reworkable, but no machinery is needed to sort and no transportation costs to get them overseas. Energy is saved and ultimately, we’re keeping hold of the resources locally.” A little out of our area (Armley, Leeds), The Paper Company manufactures materials to produce business stationery paper, guaranteed for monochrome inkjet and laser printing in 100gsm weights. Using 20 per cent post-consumer waster, 25 per cent mill waste and 55 per cent pre-consumer waste, the process for producing quality paper ALT easy chair from recycled paper is made from recycled plastic clearly as complicated as and locally grown timber with glass or plastics. To sum up, it’s clear that a used envelope dropped into the council roadside collections may return to offices, schools and glass homes only after a careful sorting and processing journey. Wood is from the building industry, recycled for a number of uses, but namely from inner city in Liverpool Oldham Bros Ltd regeneration developments, along turn it into mulch for garden with paper, plastics and landscaping and sell it by the one cardboard from other local tonne bag. In other areas, wood is businesses’ waste to create any recycled into any number of number of goods with those its household items depending on employees – often how it is long-term collected and unemployed its source – people who join either the enterprise to chippings learn new skills from for the workplace. manufacturers Project manager of furniture, Caz Anderson for instance, commented: or “When recyclable householders materials go into disposing of roadside old, worn or collections, they broken items. become It can be contaminated finely because they processed into aren’t sorted landscaping carefully and the materials, or machinery at larger pieces Glass lamp recycling plants of furniture made from waste glass crushes the can simply be materials. We use reworked and a sorted service, polished up where the different kinds of to become eco-friendly versions materials are picked up direct of chairs, stools and furnishings from our suppliers – local even with a fashionable, businesses – and the different vintage feel. In the creative industries, grades of materials are sorted first recycling any old and worn item hand. This makes the ‘raw into a new couture dress, piece of material’ so to speak much more jewellery, furniture, is fast useful.” The advantages are also becoming in vogue. Helen Hope, a to the local economy’s benefit, as

graduate of Liverpool John Moores University, opened a vintage jewellery store Hope & Winkle in 2009 in Petticoat Lane on Bold Street, where she sells vintage jewellery reworked into new pieces. Student catwalk shows have showcased the talents of young designers with the skills to turn carrier bags into artwork – making a political statement at the same time. For others, recycling goods into pretty and quirky new objects is primarily a profit-generating enterprise, albeit one which shows an on-trend concern for the environment and a creative outlook.

Woven picture frame made from recycled juice packs

Whatever your perspective, be it from finding beauty in the quirky and a new use for a redundant item, or simply the perspective that for the UK to compete globally in a decreasing supply of raw materials and an expanding market for recycled products, it’s time to rework our ideas about recycling, and use the resources and the skills at our disposal to come up with some creative solutions at the bottom of the council collection bin.

Taxman gets tough on Non-Residents

Julia Casimo

Thousands of people who work abroad and claim Non-Resident status, thus avoiding UK income tax, will have their affairs put under the spotlight by the Taxman following a recent court ruling. The Court of Appeal found that a taxpayer who had claimed to be resident in the Seychelles had never ‘left the UK’ because England had remained the ‘Centre of gravity of his life’. This was mainly because his wife and son continued to live here. Q. I have worked out of the UK for several years as a contractor, and have always claimed non-residence and made sure I was in the UK for less than 90 days. Loads of my colleagues do the same, but one of them is now being investigated by the Revenue who are saying that he has been resident in the UK all along. What is the position? A. There have been a number of recent changes in the way that HMRC will assess someone’s residence. The long standing practice of many people like yourself and your colleagues to rely on the ‘90 day’ rule is now under severe threat. Firstly for 2007/8 onwards HMRC changed the rules for daycounting, so that days of arrival and departure in the UK which had previously been ignored in counting towards your UK days, where brought in. This makes a real difference for people who make frequent short trips to the UK.

Secondly and much more importantly on 6 April 2009 HMRC withdrew their old IR 20 Booklet and replaced it with more detailed guidance including HMRC 6, a new) manual. Buoyed up by victory in a couple of recent high profile cases, this new booklet provides a flavor of how an Inspector will tackle a residence enquiry. Q. So does the 90 day rule still apply? A. Yes, but only if you are judged to have left the UK first. Critically HMRC are placing much more emphasis on this test. To decide whether an individual has left the UK they will consider, for example • availability of accommodation in the UK (i.e. have you kept any property in the UK?) • business ties in the UK (particularly if the business is the main source of income) • social ties in the UK ( i.e. have you retained membership of clubs, season tickets etc) • family ties in the UK ( i.e. have your immediate family, spouse/partner and children remained here) ...If you have not left the UK, under these criteria, then all your income from when you began to work abroad is potentially subject to UK tax. It is clear that non-UK residence can no longer be established by carefully structured holidays and business trips, and HMRC intend to look at the ‘bigger picture’ and the pattern of an individual’s life. People who have left the UK but still visit often and retain family, social or financial ties will now become the focus of the Taxman’s attention. As with many decisions you really do need to take independent financial and tax advice. Homes let in under a month Andrew Louis sets a challenge

The Liverpool Collegiate

Andrew Louis has set itself the challenge to respond to the increase in demand for property at the start of 2010. The established estate agent, with offices in the city centre and Prescot, has set a three week challenge in the lettings department. The agent says that, if they do not take a reservation fee within that period, they will provide landlords with a free of charge rental guarantee for six or 12 months depending on the landlord’s tenancy agreement, until a tenant is secured. Helen Goodwin, new business manager at Andrew Louis, commented: “Property which is well presented and priced

realistically will usually be let straight away after advertising, or even before it goes to print. We have an extremely high tenant demand at present.” A one bedroom duplex in Liverpool Collegiate was let to its first viewer, when it went on the market. A nine week challenge is also being introduced to the sales department. Helen added: “If the asking price for a property is realistic we are confident the property will sell, which is why we’re encouraging people to take us up on the challenge. However, if we do not have interest or an offer after this deadline, we are offering our clients the option to go into a property auction for free.”

Retrofit fit for residents

HOMEBUY EXTENDED FOR MILLER

Innovative technology for tenants

Government support continues

Liverpool will share a slice of a £17m government grant to test low carbon building technology. The ‘Retrofit for the Future’ programme is the first of its kind in the UK, and will see social housing units across the country retrofitted with new, innovative technologies. The retrofit prototypes will each receive an average of £142,000 to demonstrate deep cuts in carbon emissions and exemplar energy efficient measures. The Plus Dane Group will retrofit a Victorian endterrace in the city with the proceeds of the grant. This will include the installation of triple-glazed windows and the construction of a new conservatory to the rear of the property where the air will be preheated by the sun and then transferred into the house through a mechanical ventilation unit. Plus Dane is currently seeking to identify a family who will live in the property once it is complete and the future tenants will be included within the project team as the refurbishment work proceeds.

Two of Miller Homes’ Liverpool developments, Connaught Green in Anfield and Bridgewater Park in Netherley, are available to buyers eligible for the government’s HomeBuy Direct scheme. The initiative sees buyers granted an equity loan of up to 30 per cent of the property price co-funded by Miller Homes and the government. The loan is then repaid over 25 years, with no interest for the first five years, meaning that buyers can move in for 70 per cent of the property cost. The scheme is also helping more homebuyers to access mortgages. Miller Homes’ sales manager, Helen Toher-Horne, commented: “There has never been a better time to buy a new home. House prices are on the rise yet interest rates are still low and there are new

allocations of HomeBuy Direct properties available now.” She added: “We have seen a marked increase in visitor levels across our sites and sales are strong, with people prepared to buy off plan to secure their ideal plot.” Newly released properties at the developments include the ‘Kitchener’ and the three bedroom ‘Darwin’ style home. Dare we say it, but the sales market is beginning to start showing signs of life again, especially at the lower end of the market (up to £150,000) and confidence is returning. We noticed towards the back end of 2009 that activity levels where picking up and the ‘new year, fresh start’ mentality that many people have has seen this trend thankfully continue in 2010. Added to this is that there is a feeling that the vast majority of the people viewing at present are genuine buyers, rather than the ‘carpet treaders’ of days gone by. This has resulted in a huge increase in viewings, offers and sales on last year’s doom and gloom figures and we feel this will continue throughout the year. Liverpool city centre has always been a popular workplace, but its continued residential and commercial transformation since 2007 has seen it become an extremely desirable place to live. With such high quality residential dwellings, and seriously improved amenities, many people are starting to look at the city centre as their first choice to live and enjoy the ‘city lifestyle.’ Despite this increased activity, the marketing price still has to be very competitive and presentation of apartments needs to be good. The market is competitive and many distressed sales still exist, halting any price increases for the foreseeable future, but our advice would be to put your property on the market at a realistic price and interest will be strong from genuine buyers.

Keeping a property to let out is a great idea and can be a good investment for the future. However, as a landlord you will have certain responsibilities. By placing your property on the books of a letting agent, you will ensure that you are aware of your legal obligations on becoming a landlord and they can also help you to comply with all current relevant legislation. First of all, when you rent out your property it is your responsibility to ensure that any gas appliances in the property and gas installation pipe work are safe for the use of the tenant. If you decide to leave some electrical equipment for the use of the tenant when you let your property, you must ensure it is safe and of no risk or injury to human or animal, the easiest way to ensure the safety of it is to have a qualified NICEIC registered electrician perform a portable appliance test. If you have a mortgage on the property you must obtain consent from your mortgage lender. If your interest in the property is leasehold, your lease may require you to obtain consent from your landlord prior to sub letting. All properties available for sale or to let must have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). This provides an energy efficiency rating for a property, and also shows the environmental impact of the building, by indicating its carbon dioxide emissions. What’s more, all deposits paid by the tenant have to be protected by a deposit protection scheme within 14 calendar days of receipt by the landlord.

What’s the layout? It’s a four bedroom house, including the attic conversion, with kitchen, bathroom and two living rooms downstairs. Do you have a garden? Yes there’s a neat little front garden and drive and a back garden with a patio and lawn. All I’ve done so far is put a bird table up! Tell us about the living room... There’s original wooden flooring, as there is throughout the downstairs, and I’ve added a brown leather corner suite and a light coloured wooden dining table and chairs which I picked up from Argos. Some of the more unusual items include my globe drinks cabinet, fake fur rug and the South Korean welcome message from my travels. And the front room? I call this my music room because it’s absolutely stacked with all my musical equipment. I play the piano and the keyboard but I’ve got all sorts of instruments like a guitar and drums. There’s even a didgeridoo in there! I love all kinds of music and I’m actually featured on a Nick Cave album cover! There are all sorts of bits here and there, like my Dad’s old ornate chess set and the Robosapien remote control robot which I bought recently. That’s really cool.

Mark Allen

What’s the theme? There’s a feature wall with black and white patterned wallpaper, black wooden floors and modern black fireplace. On the plain wall there are decorative masks from South Korea and my holiday in Morocco and other pieces friends have brought back from holidays. I spent three years travelling round Australia and the Far East and I also lived and worked in South Korea teaching English to small children so there are all sorts of things I’ve picked up from my travels.

Take us upstairs... You’re drawn to the cricket bat on the wall which has been signed by the Warwickshire cricket team from 1990 and there are more items as you make your way upstairs, such as my Aston Villa mirror and Simpsons Russian dolls.

Tell us about the bedrooms... The spare bedroom was bright pink when I moved in so I’ve decorated in a lighter colour with lilac accessories. I have a small box room, while the master bedroom is done out in a light blue. I think that room has the most that needs doing to it and I plan to have wardrobes fitted. There’s also a loft conversion with some great views but I’ve never had more than two people stay at once. What’s your favourite item in the house? I think my favourite items are the photographs of the people and places from my travels. Laos was my favourite place of the lot. It’s like Thailand but kind of unspoilt. And finally, what would be your dream item?

I’d like a large flat screen television on the wall in the living room, although considering the cost I don’t think that’s going to happen this year! Your Move 39

HAVE YOUR SAY

YOUR VIEWS ON BIG ISSUES

HAS LIVERPOOL SOLD OUT? With Lewis's closure for development work to take place, has Liverpool sold out at the expense of a retail landmark? What will become of the surrounding retail district? “Cities are living, evolving organisms. Liverpool's retail 'centre of gravity' has shifted. The Lime Street/Renshaw Street area is looking pretty sad and poses a huge strategic challenge. Planners and developers must avoid blandness and bring some wit and quirkiness to what comes next. That means more independent outlets, creative public spaces, a better social mix and maybe a new cultural attraction.”

Liam Fogarty chair, amayorforliverpool.org

“It was a foregone conclusion that if you move a city away from its epicentre, some businesses would suffer. The deplorable state that our visitors have to walk through, namely Lime Street in particular, would detract any visitors wanting to shop, let alone browse in this area...Grosvenor has done a wonderful job – Liverpool City Council, now it’s your turn!”

Herbert Howe owner, Herbert of Liverpool

“Whilst this is sad news it probably won't come as a great surprise to many people. The current store is a shadow of its former self and has been underinvested in for years. It would be great if most of the amazing features of the building can be retained by the developers and the redevelopment should tie into Bold Street and become part of this quarter rather than being out on a limb.”

Dick Mawdsley

“I do not believe Liverpool has sold out; I do feel sorry for those who have lost their jobs but the Central Village Development will create jobs in the short term and long term. A new lease may be offered to Vergo Retail who traded as Lewis's in the future. The building will remain as a landmark but it may in the future have a different use and the new development should drive much needed new footfall to this end of town.”

Ian Strettle, shopping centre manager at Clayton Square

“Traditionally Church Street and Bold Street were perceived as the retail heart of Liverpool; however, in the last 18 months there has been a noticeable shift towards Liverpool One (obviously an attractive proposition as few retail units are empty). I would say that Liverpool never “sells out”, it just moves with the times.”

TALENT IN THE CITY

With an attitude and flair which makes Gordon Ramsey look like a strawberry flan, Marco Pierre White’s firebrand nature has left chefs and celebrities alike quaking in their aprons. By the age of 33, while working as chef patron at the former Hyde Park Hotel, the ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ star became the youngest ever chef to be awarded three Michelin stars. Ever the philosopher, he later became disillusioned with the profession, returning the stars he had worked tirelessly to achieve. Now a restaurateur, Marco was recently in Aughton, near Ormskirk, for the re-launch of The Swann Inn, his latest venture.

What’s your welcome to the region been like? I have to say, even though I’m a Yorkshire boy on the wrong side of the Pennines the people have been very nice to me. It’s like when I first went to Dublin and opened over there. People opened their arms to me and welcomed me into their town. It’s very nice when you’re welcomed. When I took over The Yew Tree Inn (Hampshire) they hated me because they thought I was going to make their local village pub really expensive and really posh. I had a bit of resistance there and a bit of hostility. You came up for the food and drink festival last summer. Did you find people in Liverpool were enthusiastic about good food? I liked going to that. There was no pretence. What impressed me more than anything was the diversity of all the different types of cuisine. It was a very good standard. They were in these little sheds trying to replicate what they do in their restaurants but what was really impressive was their capacity to give and to share. That’s what makes a great restaurateur. There’s been recent criticism of a lack of quality restaurants in the region. Are you inclined to agree? I think there are a lot of very good restaurants in the north of England and at different levels. You get what you pay for and if something’s not good enough in that sector then it won’t last. There are restaurants that will give you dinner for £15 a head. If you step back and look at it it’s not Le Gavroche or the Swann Inn Marco

Pierre White but it’s offering a service to a sector of the market that can only afford £15 a head. It’s very easy to criticise but you have to look at something for what it is. That’s how I look at everything in my life. Look at McDonalds. They supply a service to a nation. It’s always consistent, you know what you’re going to spend and you know exactly what you’re getting. People are horrified when I say every so often I drop into a McDonalds. If I’m driving up from the south coast with my daughter and she’s hungry, what’s six chicken nuggets and a milk shake?

“People are horrified when I say every so often I drop into a McDonalds” Why did you decide to retire from the profession? When you’ve spent 22 years in a kitchen, six to seven days a week, working very long hours, all your energy goes into your food. The food may have developed but you as an individual haven’t developed. By leaving the kitchen it allowed me to develop as a person and start to discover who I was. At what point did you decide to return your stars? One day I was salmon fishing and I caught a salmon. Every time I catch a salmon I do three

things: Firstly I let the salmon go, secondly I light a Marlboro and thirdly I rest the pool because I just disturbed it with the fish I caught. While I was sitting there having my fag, a little thought came into my mind: I was being judged by people who have less knowledge than me. That’s all those three stars are really worth. What made you want to become a chef originally? I came from very humble beginnings. My father was a chef and my grandfather was a chef. When I left school I had no qualifications, so I followed in my father’s footsteps. You’ve cooked for some of the most famous people in the world, including Oliver Reed. What are your memories of him? I loved Oliver. He was a genius. I liked him very much God bless his soul. I have very fond memories of him. My favourite story of Oliver is the time he walked into my restaurant one night and he said “Marco, I’d like to commend you on your decor, it’s of the finest.” I said “Oliver, you’ve been here many times before”. He said, “Yes Marco but it’s the first time I’ve arrived sober”. He was a great man. One of the great things about my industry is the people I’ve met and the people you get to know. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? Look at my hand, what do you see? A palm. I see four knuckles. We’re looking at the same thing but we see something very different.

I would like to have some wooden blinds fitted to my kitchen windows. When I search through catalogues, companies only seem to have neutral wooden shades or off white colours in their collections. I am looking for something more unique and colourful – and ideally I would like a bright yellow colour. Do you know of any companies that would paint the blinds exactly suited to my colour choice?

With over ten years’ experience in the interior design business, Sharon Armor is poised to answer all your design queries from DIY disasters to decorating dilemmas.

You’re in luck! The company www.customwest.co.uk do offer such a service for their wooden blinds. The blinds can be bespoke, lacquered in any colour and with either a matt or gloss finish. For this service the company does add an additional charge, but it means that you can have the colour of your choice. www.customwest.co.uk

We would like to re-tile our main bathroom in the Easter holidays as we have already purchased a plain white bathroom suite in the sales, earlier in the year. Could you please give us some suggestions on the latest trends in tiles? We would love to add some colour to the bathroom and of course, if we could make it appear larger, then that would be even better. I think that blue and white is a new trend that’s quickly taking over from the spa colour scheme in bathroom design. The colours are very uplifting, whilst still allowing us to escape and recharge our batteries. Eastern influences are still on trend too, so why not indulge yourself in a pattern tile? For years we have tiled bathrooms in texture and colour, but this season we see a return to pattern. Fired Earth have a fantastic tile called Andalucía in their collection, which would look fantastic in any bathroom. To make the room appear larger, why not tile one feature wall in the pattern tiles and the rest in a similar plain tile. www.firedearth.co.uk

In a previous edition of Your Move, a person asked the question about making their home friendlier for their adult sons. I am about to move into a property that has a large basement, which I think would be the perfect space for my sons and their friends. Ideally what would you suggest would be the ideal solution for this space? If you’re looking for this space to be used solely by your sons I would cater for their tastes alone. Why not turn part of it into a cinema room? Another area could act as a bedroom, which is handy when they want their friends to stay over. If there is room maybe you could turn part of it into a home gym. Your Move 49

TABLE TALK

“valuers need to recognise that costs are increasing for housebuilders all the time”

LUCY OLIVER HAS LUNCH WITH... Chris Aitken of Redrow Homes, Lancashire hris Aitken has an impressive CV in property, having spent 13 years at a national housebuilder before joining Redrow Homes. In her ten years at Redrow, she moved quickly up the career ladder to be promoted as regional sales director for Lancashire, covering Merseyside and the north-west. Having driven in to Liverpool from Sale for our meeting, it’s Chris’ first chance to sample everything Liverpool One has to offer when we meet for lunch at Palm Sugar.

dedicated to showcasing the properties. Following the recent unveiling of Redrow’s New Heritage collection at Bonhams Auction House in London in February, and the official launch of the Liverpool properties at Cressington Heath in Garston, the sales team are set to be busy with enquiries flooding in from the public. Says Chris, “We don’t have to try and sell these homes – people actually want to buy them. The New Heritage collection sees a return to

“Succulent skewers of chicken satay and eye-wateringly generous rings of calamari are served up as delicious tapas” Since its opening on Liverpool One’s terrace last summer, Palm Sugar has lost no time establishing itself as a fabulous new night-life venue with opulent interiors, fantastic cocktails, and a celebrity and VIP clientele. Now, the launch of the Thai Tapas menu to enjoy with drinks is set to bring more customers in to enjoy the relaxing interiors, bubble glass chandeliers, and views over Chavasse Park. Chris and I order sparkling water as we peruse the Thai Tapas menu and place our order for a selection of mixed tapas to share. It’s set to be a busy year for the housebuilder following a Granada TV campaign and the creation of Redrow.tv – an online channel

traditional style properties over two floors, rather than apartments and three storey homes.” Steve Morgan, Redrow’s original founder, returned to industry and to the helm of Redrow as chairman in April 2009, and his pledge to take the housebuilder back to its core values of ‘quality, tradition and superior styling’ have, according to Chris, been borne out: “When I started to work in the industry, I always wanted to work at Redrow because I could see that they had the best products with good sized rooms and the right dimensions. That’s definitely true once more, and I’m proud of the new collection – these are the homes that people want to live in. It was a brave step to take in designing them for the

buyer and not the planner, but it’s paid off.” Succulent skewers of chicken satay and eye-wateringly generous rings of calamari are served up as delicious tapas, but in true Thai style. Chris and I tuck in, exclaiming over the calamari, the vegetable spring rolls, mixed vegetable tempura and deep fried chicken in a delicate breadcrumb. Chris came into the business as a mortgage advisor before moving into sales, and feels strongly that the bigger mortgage lenders get behind housebuilders, and produce better products for the new build market to help the housing market’s recovery: “The government have done their bit, as by introducing the HomeBuy Direct scheme buyers are borrowing only 70 per cent of the purchase price. I also think that valuers need to recognise that costs are

increasing for housebuilders all the time. Redrow is committed to minimising the impact on the environment with homes which comply with the new building regulations, and include features to enhance energy and water efficiency. These brand new, high specification properties can’t be compared with resale houses which are over 20 years old, using the floorspace as the only factor.” Over authentic Illy coffees and a generous mixed fruit platter, Chris and I discuss our shared passion for travelling, but it’s clear that her work is more than a job for Chris: “The properties are really well designed, with open plan kitchen and dining spaces and subtle room demarcations through a bookcase, for example. The details have really been thought through.” That seems to just about sum it all up.

Go Liverpool tries a taste of Latin America. JONATHAN KEARNEY SAMPLES...

Alma de Cuba With a glance at Alma de Cuba’s website you’ll find testimonials from such cultural aficionados as the New York Times and Washington Post. This should come as little surprise considering the reputation it has established since it burst onto the city’s social scene with a carnival flourish. Unlike so many of its peers, it has managed to maintain the frisson of excitement that is so often sparked by a new city centre venue. Housed in what was once Liverpool’s oldest surviving Catholic church, St Peter’s, this owes much to the fact that Alma de Cuba remains a unique destination on the city’s landscape. Setting it apart from the well-travelled bar trail, it also retains a steadfast commitment to its Latin American theme, with generous helpings of authentic entertainment perpetuating its hedonistic atmosphere. Despite its obvious allure as a well-stocked bar, as a first time diner I remained apprehensive. More familiar with negotiating a late night scrum for a drink among the scouseratti, I had the ill-conceived notion that the quality of the restaurant wouldn’t live up to the fanfare. I can now say with some authority that the food, service and setting justified the hype. Our waiter for the evening greeted us at our impressive table, over-looking the already flourishing hive of activity downstairs, before

Hair Liverpool THE PIN UP BY TONI&GUY

The cut The pin up is one of our newest collection known as “Interactive” and will be appearing in over 400 windows worldwide in the next few weeks. It takes its influence from the sixties inspired shapes that we’re seeing a lot this season, particularly on the catwalk. Think butter wouldn’t melt meets bad girl blonde. Sex kittens like Bridgit Bardot, Blondie and Shrimpton and you’re on the right track. Who would it suit? Haircuts are definitely going bigger this year. This is bang on trend and will definitely be a head turner if you’ve got the look to pull this off. We’re moving away from graphic lines and structure for a soft grown up but edgy feel. This means haircuts are more flattering and commercial so more face shapes can wear them -and more hairdressers will be able to say “Yes!” instead of “No!” How to style Its all about the volume! Not as perfectly backcombed as the first time around, the look of the season is drier in texture more natural and slightly dishevelled. Mousse and hairspray are still your staples but don’t be afraid to try out drier more powdery products like Dry Shampoo and Resurrection Dust. When your friends comment that your hair is big tell them its supposed to be! When I’ve done the pin up recently I’ve told my clients to remember the golden rules this season :- Keep your parting shallow and your crown and confidence high!

Previews THEATRE, FILM AND MUSIC IN LIVERPOOL

On the stage The Shared Experience company, well-known to theatre-goers in the city for their evocative Jane Eyre in a recent season, are set to return to the Playhouse Theatre with an American classic drama, The Glass Menagerie. The Tennessee Williams’ classic, adapted from his short story, is said to be autobiographical exploration of his own family dynamics presented in the form of a memory play. The lead role of the all-too-loving mother, smothering her daughter, is acted by the talented, RSC theatre veteran Imogen Stubbs and looks set to be a compelling performance.

Cinematic encounters Tim Burton’s hotly anticipated take on ‘Alice’ is set to give a new spin to the classic tale and show a darker side of Wonderland.

In this adaptation, the story begins with, not a child, but a 19 year old Alice attending a typical Victorian garden party. Alice soon realises the party is little more than a convention, setting up the opportunity for her to be proposed to in front of hundreds of people. Horrified, she follows a white rabbit through a maze and down a rabbit hole, which takes her back to Wonderland.

Far removed from the 1951 animated adventure, this time Disney has gone a lot darker. Gone is the sugar-coated tale, in its place is a fantasy-adventure film with live action and stunning scenery. Although our heroine has no recollection of her childhood expeditions in Wonderland, Alice encounters a number of the characters we remember from the original. With Burton directing, it’s no surprise that Johnny Depp stars – as the Mad Hatter – nor that Helena Bonham Carter features as the Queen. Stephen Fry puts a new take on the grinning Cheshire Cat and Alan Rickman, Matt Lucas and Anne Hathaway will all be making appearances in Wonderland. Despite the many parodies and remakes of Lewis Caroll’s classic tale, an immense hype is following this film – no doubt due to the stellar cast and high expectations of the visuals. After a much-publicised dispute between the larger cinemas and the DVD distributors on the latter's release date, Alice in Wonderland will be showing in cinemas from 5 March.

The music round up This story of one woman’s reluctance to let go of her youthful memories of courtships and her desire to marry off her daughter is sure to see a lyrical, thoughtful staging by director Polly Teale. Judging by Shared Experience’s characteristic attention to light, sound and movement, this compelling, inwardlooking drama looks set to cause fireworks on stage at the Playhouse.

Never disappointing, the live music scene in Liverpool has something for everyone over the next few months. Country star Carlene Carter, daughter of June Carter, takes to the stage at the Cavern Club on 9 March while across the city Mumford & Sons will be playing to a sold out audience at the O2 Academy. Hitting those high notes on 18 March, Katherine Jenkins, along with Britain’s Got Talent stars Escala, will be playing the Arena. To top off the month, winner of BBC Sound of 2010 award, Ellie

Goulding, will be in the O2 Academy on March 29 – and this singer songwriter is set to be huge this year, well worth going to see before the hype takes over. May is the month for superstars it seems with the Arena hosting gigs by rock legends KISS (4 May) and Rihanna on 8 May. On 19 May, Paloma Faith will perform at the Philharmonic. If that weren’t enough, The Temper Trap will be playing a sold out gig in the O2 on the 16th and on 31st, X Factor Queen Leona Lewis will be back at the Arena.

New music stars

Marina & The Diamonds return to Liverpool, and The Masque, following a ‘secret’ gig last November when the Greek/Welsh songstress wowed fans with her single ‘Mowgli’s Road’ and the catchy ‘I Am Not a Robot’. The 24 year old, who sang on Jonathan Ross’ Friday Night Project and has just released a new single ‘Hollywood’ will be performing as part of Liverpool Music Week to growing numbers of fans – whom she calls her ‘diamonds’ - many of whom have taken to wearing face glitter and gems at her gigs. As a talented singer, songwriter and musician, Marina’s star is set to soar in 2010.
