Hello This issue of Your Move is filled with opportunity for movers, from exclusive waterfront apartments to rent before buying, and brand new homes in up and coming Anfield. We take a look inside a newly renovated apartment at Liverpool One, and this issue’s Hot Topic puts the focus on how to protect the planet and save money when you power your home. We interviewed Liverpool actor Graham Bickley about forthcoming ‘Great Expectations’ and sent out the snapper to Herbert’s champagne launch. See the website for more news and photos at www.yourmovemagazine.com.

Exclusive tower launches ‘Rent to Buy’

West Tower interior

New scheme at iconic development Property hotspot

Connaught Green, Anfield

A new incentive on homes at the waterfront is enticing buyers and those looking to rent. Beetham’s West Tower, which was completed at the start of 2008, is offering a Rent to Buy scheme on its apartments with prices discounted by as much as 30 per cent. The two bedroom and two bathroom apartments all come fully furnished in the landmark West Tower building by the pioneering Liverpool developers. The scheme also offers the option to rent for up to three years at a set price, with the rent accrued up to the point of purchase to be used as a deposit. Buyers completing their purchase before 31 December this year will qualify for 30 per cent off the purchase price,

while completions between 1 January and 31 December 2010 qualify for a 20 per cent discount. For those completions between 1 January and 31 December 2010, buyers will receive a 10 per cent discount. All rent paid up until that point will be allocated towards the purchase price of the property, and to enter into the agreement a one-off option fee, equivalent to one month’s rent, is also required. Kate Frost, sales co-ordinator at Beetham, commented: “This is a fantastic opportunity to rent with a view to owning in one of Liverpool’s most exclusive and iconic developments.” For more information on the scheme telephone Beetham on 0151 476 6666.

Redevelopment buzz in Anfield Regeneration in Anfield is well underway, and Your Move put the spotlight on the area’s extensive redevelopment and growing community in a recent photographic feature. The plans for the new Anfield Plaza include a hotel, retail, cafés, bars and leisure facilities, and it’s estimated that 60,000 new jobs will be created. Around 1,300 new homes are being constructed in the area, replacing 1,700 existing properties, and the outside space is also being refurbished. Miller Homes’ Connaught Green development in the area has seen an increase in enquiries from buyers. The development contains two, three and four bedroom homes with prices

starting at £174,950. The government’s HomeBuy Direct scheme is available for buyers at the development, with the option to pay 70 per cent of the purchase price now, and 30 per cent later. Jacqui Gutteridge, sales consultant for Miller, commented: “The redevelopment is now very visible. It is going to become a very smart and very desirable place to live, with house prices increasing substantially in the short to medium term.” To enquire about properties at Connaught Green visit the marketing suite Thursday to Monday from 10.30am until 5.30pm or telephone 0800 840 8526. Hot Topic //// ISSUES AFFECTING YOU

How to power your home Merseyside householders can use less energy and save money by making just a few simple changes.

The green agenda is gathering pace to the extent that eco homes have become the new dream property, but the battle against climate change is much more than a fashion statement. The government’s plan to cut carbon emissions by 80 per cent before 2050 to protect our health and that of the planet is, argue green campaigners, not an ambition but a necessity. With more people living alone or working from home than ever before, the householder’s part in cutting carbon has to be a priority. On Merseyside, the government is also funding home improvements to make properties more energy efficient and cost effective, in a bid to educate residents on the benefits of reduced carbon emissions. We’ve sourced some simple ways to cut costs and energy, to power your home in a ‘greener’ way. Demand your supply A number of energy suppliers have been attracting customers by marketing themselves as having environmental credentials. Ofgem, the energy regulating body, has now published new guidelines for suppliers of ‘green’ electricity tariffs for the benefit of customers so that ‘green’ suppliers must demonstrate their energy packages deliver a positive environmental benefit, which means abating at least a minimum threshold of carbon dioxide emissions. Previously, some suppliers merely repackaged their 30 Your Move

existing portfolios as ‘green’, without taking any steps towards using renewable or sustainable resources. To check whether your supplier meets the criteria, visit www.whichgreen.org.uk. Insulate In the credit crunching climate, there are many ideas circulating on the best ways to save money, and the good news is that energy saving around the home has to be one of the simplest. It’s estimated that turning down the heating thermostat by one degree can cut bills by 10 per cent, and turning off lights in rooms you’re not using, and replacing

bulbs with a lower wattage energy efficient version could also see you make substantial savings. An old boiler can be very inefficient, while a new high-efficiency condensing boiler with heating controls could save £200 a year on bills. Research has also found that installing loft insulation could save more than £100 a year on heating bills, while doubleglazing cuts heat loss to save another £90 annually. Wind power It may surprise you but 40 per cent of Europe’s total wind energy is generated in the UK, although only 0.5 per cent of our electricity requirements

comes from this clean, renewable source. Installing a micro wind turbine at your property can be a good way to provide your own electricity supply, and any unused or excess can be exported and sold to the national grid. A smaller turbine requires a battery and an inverter to convert the energy into electricity. A mast mounted version can be in the region of £11,000, but a roof mounted turbine costs from £1,500 and last for about 22.5 years. This option works best if the site is a smooth hill-top, free from obstructions, but for more information see www.energysavingtrust.org.uk.

Sunny side up Solar panels fitted to the roof in this country are not as popular as in sunnier climates, but it’s estimated that after ten years, the panels begin to pay for themselves. With the bigger changes to your home it’s clear that if you can stump up the initial outlay then the savings are going to be felt in the longterm. However, homeowners can apply for grants to assist with the costs of installing solar panels until June 2010, by applying to the government’s Low Carbon Buildings Programme; see www.lowcarbonbuildings.org.uk. The big screen When buying new household appliances, such as mobile telephones, computers and televisions, you may expect to see your energy bills increase, but by choosing a new appliance with green credentials, you can cut down on your bills. Most new televisions come with LCD or plasma screens, but these use 270W and 390W respectively, when compared with the 90W needed to power an old cathode ray tube (CRT) television. However, energy consumption increases with the size of the screen. As we enter the digital age, it’s going to become more difficult to find a traditional TV that will provide a full service, but look for an integrated digital television (IDV) with a built-in set-top box to save 25kg of carbon emissions a year. Merseyside’s green makeover Homes in our region will be the first to take advantage of a scheme set to reduce Britain’s carbon footprint. The £350 million Community Energy Saving Programme will be offering home improvements to residents in Merseyside, Halton, Warrington, Ellesmere Port and Neston, with the full costs met by a levy on energy companies. The programme aims to reduce carbon emissions in Britain by 80 per

cent by 2050 – an ambitious target – by making properties retain heat more effectively. Installing cavity wall insulation at a cost of £200 - £500 a year could save £160 on an annual bill, and solid wall insulation, which comes in at around £5,500, would see savings of around £500 a year. While some of the measures require a large outlay before they see any savings in money, the funding from energy companies in partnership with local authorities and voluntary groups means that revolutionary technology can be installed in properties with no cost to the householder. A ground source heat pump works by absorbing heat from the garden to provide hot water and underfloor heating, and a system lasts for between 20 and 25 years. It costs around £6,000 to install, saving between £300 and £1,000 a year, and, as the resident won’t be paying for it directly, it won’t take six or seven years before the savings begin to be seen. The same can be said for the air source heat pump, which uses warm air generated in the kitchen and bathrooms to heat incoming air. A system comes in at around £7,000 but saves £300 - £850 annually; and the benefits to residents in Merseyside will be significant and immediate. For information about the programme in your area see www.defra.gov.uk/news. Contacts Merseyside Energy Efficiency Advice Centre is run by Energy Projects Plus and offers advice to residents and the community, as well as to landlords and with the local authorities. City centre apartments from £27,500

Sales success

Convenient living with less to pay

Homes were hot under the hammer at Sutton Kersh’s first auction of the year. The event at the Crowne Plaza in the city centre saw 60 per cent of the ninety lots on offer sold successfully. The total receipts for the sale came to just under £4 million, although Sutton Kersh says post auction activity is expected. One residential property in

L8, containing four selfcontained studio flats generated substantial interest before selling for £96,000; double the guide price. James Kersh, auction director, commented: “There has been a noticeable increase in activity in the local property market since the start of the year, and the auction saw the return of professional investors and the Irish contingency.”

A new scheme from The Regenda Group is offering shared ownership on property, with the opportunity to purchase just 25 per cent of the new build home. A range of one and two bedroom apartments in city centre locations are available under the Homebuy scheme. The purchaser is able to purchase a quarter share of their new property and rent the remaining 75 per cent until they wish to purchase more shares. The developments offering the Homebuy scheme include the award-winning Frank Carroll Court and The Foundry, both of which are within walking distance of the new Liverpool One complex and the amenities of the city centre. 32 Your Move

Home ownership director at Regenda, Graham Bennett, commented: “This is a fantastic scheme to get more people onto the housing ladder in the area, when prices are high and prohibitive. It means any interested buyer need secure only 25 per cent of the property’s total value, and then pay monthly rent on the remaining share. “These stunning apartments are ideal for first time buyers as they are situated in a sought after location in the heart of what a wonderful city has to offer.” For more information contact the sales team, Monday to Friday from 9am until 5pm on 0151 707 2151 or visit www.regendahomes.co.uk.

Two Liverpool property professionals are backing a prestigious awards ceremony for organisations in Bootle. Nick Kollakis of Dreaming Spires, which is behind the Stella Nova development of apartments and retail units, and Mike Black of Blacks Estate Agents have put their support behind the ceremony. The Bootle All Together Better Awards include 11 categories to recognise outstanding contributions made by individuals, groups and companies at a gala dinner hosted by BBC Radio Merseyside’s Roger Phillips. The awards will recognise achievement in business and

the public sector, and the ceremony will take place at Bootle Town Hall on 30 April 2009. Nick Kollakis of Dreaming Spires commented: “Bootle has, over recent years, experienced a sea change – not only in terms of the vast regeneration that has taken place, both privately and publicly, but in terms of people’s perception of this industrious town. This prestigious award ceremony will recognise outstanding companies and individuals who have contributed so much to Bootle’s continuing breathtaking success.” To register a nomination, download an entry form from www.visitbootle.co.uk.

ON THE COVER

BLACK’S IN THE BLACK At a time when the majority of the other estate agents are suffering from the financial crisis, Blacks Estate Agents is a shining example of how to ‘buck the trend’. Mike Black told Your Move why his company is different: “A lot of the other agents are closing down branches, reducing advertising, getting rid of staff or just trying to get vendors to rent and not sell.” Instead of down-sizing, Blacks has done the opposite by expanding to cover other areas, taking over the selling arm of Platinum Estate and Letting Agents in Walton, being a part of The Home Market alliance in Netherton and setting-up a working partnership with Merseyside Property Auctions in the city centre. Add to that an increased spend on advertising, a more frequent appearance in

the media, and an increase in staffing, the Blacks team has ensured that its staff are prepared to deal with the larger area they now cover and the higher demand for their services. More importantly though, Blacks has now upgraded the contact time and information given to their customers and clients. They now spend more time giving feedback and advice and prepare newsletters and reviews to keep their clients up-to-date with the currant market conditions. “The essential part of this service is very simple,” says Mike, “Just tell the truth.” He added: “This is where

On their bikes Fundraising agents support children’s charity The Sequence Group, which includes the Allerton branch of Jones & Chapman estate agents, has donated a cheque for £23,870 to CLIC Sargent, a charity which looks after children with cancer. The estate agents raised money with bike rides, coffee mornings, fun runs and an auction, which itself raised £8,000. Chief executive of Sequence, David Plumtree,

commented: “2008 was a very testing time for everyone in the industry, yet despite the personal challenges it was very heartening to see so many of the people in Sequence find the time and energy to raise a large amount of money.” Over the past two years, Sequence has raised £55,000 for CLIC Sargent. the other agents appear to have got it all wrong and have not changed their approach, which you have to, to thrive during these difficult times. “Blacks are not Special Agents, we are just agents who

have looked at the present financial situation the country and the housing market is in. That’s how we’ve worked out a way to beat it; and at the same time get their customers and clients through it too.”

Lettings agent warns landlords Belvoir lettings agents, which has more than 140 offices across the UK branches in the city centre and West Derby, is warning would-be landlords to read the small print on ‘guaranteed rental’ offers. The chief executive at Belvoir, Mike Goddard, has expressed concern that landlords are being ‘guaranteed’ rentals at fixed yields for investing in a new build property on a buy-to-let mortgage for a fixed period. Belvoir has produced an informative check list for the prospective buy-to let investor, advising them to compare the purchase price with similar

properties in the area, to read all of the conditions of the incentive scheme, and to bear in mind the property’s long term value as an investment. Mike added: “Investing in property is still a very smart move if you do your homework and get it right, and there are certainly some great deals out there for landlords at present. However, we advise potential investors to speak to a lettings expert first, for an objective opinion before making an investment.” For more information telephone the Liverpool and West Derby branches on 0151 231 1613.

//// YOUR VIEWS ON BIG ISSUES

“Yes. The PM’s decision to end 100 per cent mortgages is no more than a government sound byte. The market terminated 100 per cent mortgages 12 months ago when the wholesale money markets unravelled. Responsible lenders will always have looked at security and affordability to find the right balance.”

Paul Bibby managing partner, MSB Solicitors

“Yes, this is going to have no effect at all, and it shows a lack of current awareness on Brown’s part. The lenders have already felt the ill effects of these loans and for the past nine to 12 months it’s been impossible to get a 100 per cent mortgage. The best rates are for 75 per cent mortgages, any higher Nigel Connolly and a guarantor may even be needed.” mortgage broker, GB Finance

Is Brown out of touch? Does the prime minister’s decision to end 100 per cent mortgages and put a stop to ‘reckless’ lending show a lack of understanding of the current market situation?

“Yes, this needs thinking through in a logical and coherent way. The reality is that some borrowers need 100 per cent loans, and it could mean that buyers will find other ways of borrowing a deposit, like credit card loans. There are also other options such as shared equity mortgages, which provide a lifeline for first-time buyers. Surely the government would not want lenders to stop providing these.”

Elaine Taylor north-west sales manager for Lovell Partnerships

“No, I think that Gordon gets financial things right more often than not. 100 per cent mortgages in the UK did not create this current crisis and the UK mortgage market has always been a big winner for the banks. At heart, this decision is aimed at not making things worse for mortgagors Ian Robinson as we climb out of this mess, which has chief executive, been served up by the banks.” AHDC

“No, lenders definitely need to be made to act more responsibly. Tighter restrictions based on multiples of income should be put in place. However, restricting the market to 90 per cent mortgages will make it incredibly difficult for first-time buyers. There is still a place for 95 and 100 per James Kersh cent mortgages and if 95 per cent director, Sutton Kersh mortgages were available with sensible rates the market would improve dramatically.”

Movers Why did you choose this property? We both work long hours and weekends so this is ideal being in the city centre. It’s also been so affordable, at £430 pcm unfurnished. We’re on the top floor so we have some gorgeous views of Liverpool One and Chavasse Park, and when it was snowing we had a chimney pot view of all the buildings which was really pretty.

How is it laid out? It’s a corner apartment so it’s quite quirky and we can separate off the different sections like Chris’s music studio with his decks and computer, and that makes it feel really spacious. What’s in the living area? It’s an open plan kitchen/diner so we’ve put a dining table that opens out to seat four people in black wood in there, with black high-backed chairs, and a black TV stand for our new flat screen – the first TV we’ve bought together. We’ve also got a corner sofa-bed which opens up for storage as well – it’s been my best purchase by far and it’s really comfortable. After Glastonbury one year we had six people staying on it!

What about the kitchen? We’ve got lots of space and everything is really modern. We’ve got a full fridge freezer and a dishwasher which is great and all the appliances are in black and chrome so it all looks right together.

Kate Smith, 26, an event co-ordinator at Culture Liverpool, and Chris Green, 24, an information assistant at The Bluecoat, are renting a one bedroom apartment in the Edward Rushton building in Liverpool One through the Plus Dane Group.

What’s your theme? It was pretty neutral to start with and we’ve kept it minimalist. It has a wooden floor throughout except for the kitchen and bathroom which are tiled, and the walls are magnolia. Our huge Klimt picture, The Kiss, which we bought at the exhibition at the Tate last year, is arriving today and we’ll be putting that up. We’ve got lots of plants and a new Bonsai tree, as well as a small Superlambanana I bought after the event last year.

How have you decorated the bedroom? We’re still waiting to get wardrobes so at the moment it’s just the bed, which has storage underneath it, with white bedding and grey and black cushions and a throw, and the bedside tables. I’ll be glad when we’ve sorted that out. What is the lighting like? It’s all energy saving bulbs, and we bought matching squareshaped shades from Ikea which are square and crinkly in cream, and reflect squares onto the ceiling. What’s your next purchase? We need a rug and a few bits and pieces, like bookshelves but we’ve already had a housewarming party for our friends so we feel very settled in, even after just a month! We’ve been out for a few meals in Liverpool One, at Las Iguanas and Zizzi, and that’s been lovely. What would be your dream item, if money was no object? I’d love a walk-in wardrobe, and Chris would love a sound-proof studio: actually so would I and then I wouldn’t have to hear his music in progress, just the finished result!

What are your other favourite items? Chris bought me a piggy bank for Christmas from Urban Outfitters – it’s about the same size as the Superlambanana so that looks good and is helping us to save up.

Graham Bickley Interview //// TALENT IN THE CITY

Graham Bickley’s role as Joey Boswell in TV’s ‘Bread’ made him a household name. His return to the Everyman last year in ‘Eric’s’ showcased the musical talents he’s been honing ever since, and he’s soon to play the convict Magwitch in ‘Great Expectations’ at the Playhouse theatre.

Raising the bar What can we expect from this new adaptation of Great Expectations? This is a very concise, clear, fun but dark piece. Dickens wrote a fantastic story, although it is very long and involved, and to cut it down so that it’s palatable for the theatre can’t have been easy. People who’ve seen it say it’s got everything you expect, and some music too, which helps to move it along. Were you a reader of Dickens growing up? I was when I was forced to, but I wasn’t forced enough. I only read ‘Great Expectations’ when I got the job, but that’s really spurred me on to read some more. I am ashamed of how bad my English literature knowledge is – I blame my English teacher! What inspired you to act when you were growing up in Liverpool? Goodness, I really don’t know, 44 Your Move

although it was something I wanted to do from a very young age. I remember when I was nine or 10 and we did a nativity play, I was the narrator so I wore my own clothes. When it finished and everyone else went backstage to change, I went through the audience to my parents and everyone was very complimentary, and I liked that a lot. My father taught music and ran a church choir and an amateur operatic society, both of which I was in; he had a huge church organ in the front room. He was also a great fan of old Hollywood musicals so we’d all watch them, and there was always different music on around the house, which was great. Where did you train in Liverpool as an actor and a singer? I went to Liverpool Theatre School when I was 17. After that I started auditioning in London, and my first job was as an appalling dancer as part

of the group that appeared on the Saturday night TV programmes with Cilla or Lulu or Rolf Harris hosting them. I went in for a lot of variety shows, like the end of the pier shows in Blackpool. I didn’t do that for long though as I thought my knees were going to give in. Do you prefer stints in the West End or touring regional productions like this one? The two are very different and things have changed since I was young, free and single. When I was starting out it was very exciting to be in London with lots of new mates and you had to go where the work was, so long-running shows were good. Now though I often do concerts, which are just for one night, or shorter runs of plays like this one or Eric’s where we’ll have four weeks in rehearsals and three on the tour and it’s all finished. I prefer that now as it means I’m not away for too long from my wife, and where we live in Kent. With Eric’s it was wonderful to come back up here and see how the city has been reborn. I’m looking forward to coming here with this company and showing everyone who doesn’t know the city how exciting it is; it’s changed beyond recognition. You’re very well known for playing Joey Boswell in ‘Bread’. Was that a good experience and how has it affected your career? It was a great experience, really wonderful. It affected my career temporarily as TV does but it’s fickle and if you’re not on the box then someone else is. I went back into theatre as that’s where the work is; you need to be very brave to say no to a job in the hope of getting some TV work. It would, of course, be great to do some more TV, but it’s a lot harder now. ‘Bread’ was fantastic, but it’s a long time ago now.

You played Joe, the lead, in ‘Eric’s at the Everyman last year; do you think that the theatres here offer a good range for Liverpool audiences? Yes, I think that we do – I mean, ‘Eric’s’ was so different to this production. We have the commercial, West End shows up at the Empire and then the more edgy productions at the Everyman and Playhouse. Liverpool is very well served for the theatre. I’m also really excited about the new arena, although I haven’t been to it yet. You were nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor. What’s the proudest moment in your career? It has to be that as it was such an honour and people know straight away what that means. I also really loved the show ‘Ragtime’ that we were doing. It didn’t run for very long, but that was because the war was starting and attitudes were changing, but that’s the job I’m probably the most proud of. What are your ambitions? Oh my word, what a question. I think it would be to pay my builders who are costing me a fortune on the house at the moment. No, seriously, I think it would just be to do more good work, TV or theatre. What’s next for you after Great Expectations? I really don’t know. I’ve just done some auditions in London so I’m waiting now to hear the decision on those. Great Expectations runs from Tuesday 24 March until Saturday 28 March with performances every night at 7.30pm. There are matinees on 26 March at 1.30pm and 28 March at 2.00pm. The preview performance is 24 March at 7.30pm and there will also be a free post show discussion with the cast afterwards. Tickets start at £9.00 for the preview performance. Ask The Expert

//// GOT AN INTERIOR DESIGN DILEMMA? EMAIL US AT POST@MOVEPUBLISHING.CO.UK

Furnish your property I’ve recently purchased a two bedroom apartment in the city centre as an investment, and I’m looking to rent it out. When I spoke to my letting agents they suggested that I furnish the apartment. What is the best way to go about this?

With over 10 years experience in the interior design business, Sharon Armor is poised to answer all your design queries from DIY disasters to decorating dilemmas.

You really have two options at looking to furnish a property for rental. Your first is to use a company that specialises in buy-to-let furniture packages. The website www.buytolet-furnishings.co.uk offers packages by Loft which are cost effective, contemporary and, most importantly, durable. The service is complete and prices include all assembly, delivery and installation. The turn around is very fast and usually the apartment will be ready for occupation in a few days. Alternatively, if you choose to furnish the apartment yourself you need to keep in mind that it isn’t your home you are shopping for, but the tenant, so think about what they would want in an apartment. I’d advise you to keep all your furnishings neutral.

Vintage gems I want to furnish my house in the greenest way possible. Where is the best, most cost effective place to buy vintage or recycled furniture? The eBay website is a fantastic source of used furniture, as well as charity shops and car boot sales. There are specialist shops that sell vintage furniture, which would also be worth looking at, although you should expect to pay more in these shops as the owners have already put in a lot of hard work to source the items. If you’re thinking of using eBay to furnish a whole house I would recommend that you just buy the statement pieces such as sofas and avoid buying too much clutter; always use a broad search such as ‘retro or vintage furniture’. Other good advice is to stick to a colour scheme; just because that orange sofa is cheap doesn’t mean it’s a good purchase! Ask the seller to send more photographs and always check the postage or pick up addresses, as this can easily add a considerable extra cost. Have your top price in mind before you bid to prevent yourself from regretting your purchase later. Of course, the great thing about purchasing on eBay is that, if you don’t like it, you can always sell it on.

Classic shelving I’m in desperate need of more storage in my kitchen. Every time I try to even get a dish out I create chaos, please can you help?

Quick links Loft www.buytolet-furnishings.co.uk Ebay www.ebay.co.uk Industrial shelving www.theholdingcompany.co.uk

Most of us have cupboards full of great glassware, dishes, plates and bowls which we hide away, and only bring out to entertain. A good way to create more storage in your kitchen is to bring these precious items out of hiding and display them with pride. Think about using an industrial shelving unit or if you want a more traditional look a dresser would also work really well.

Fencing fantastic

Before April’s showers begin and while the weather is cool, woodstain or paint your garden fences to protect the wood and render them easier on the eye for summer. Look for a special brand of coverings for outdoor use and choose two good quality brushes, one four inch brush and one angled brush to reach the corners. Clean the fence with a hard brush, and scrape off any flaking paint. Secure any loose boards and replace damaged sections before you start from one board at one side and move across to the others. Top tip: Lay a thin board at ground level so you can reach that part without putting your brush in the dirt.

There are two kinds of cleaners in the world; both like to wipe up, but one will choose a fabric cloth while the other prefers the ‘soft and strong’ qualities of the disposable roll. Whichever camp you fall into, you’re bound to prefer your method above all else: the gloves are off! Of course, the traditional, fabric cloth saves on the supermarket bill and cuts down on refuse, but then again the paper tissue mops up quickly and there’s no chance of it hanging around to spread germs or smell. What’s to do then? Disposable paper towels decompose eventually, if not as quickly as your other items. If you’ve been cleaning up bleach with the paper towel or using any chemicals though, you shouldn’t dispose of it in the compost bin. For cotton and fabric cloths, make sure you keep them separate for different areas, such as worktops, floors and the bathroom, and don’t load them with products – easy to do with a large cloth. Make sure you change your cloths often, but wash them on a 30 degrees setting with a full load and on a short cycle to save energy. If you’re buying paper towels, choose those made from recycled paper and recycle the cylinder inside for more green points. Finally, beware of wet wipes for kitchens and bathrooms, which use a great deal of packaging and come loaded with chemicals.

//// MARYA MCCANN INTERVIEWS LUKE WATTS AT ZELIGS LITTLE ITALY RESTAURANT

Luke Watts, director of L3 Living, is smiling broadly as he arrives at Zeligs of Little Italy restaurant which is tucked away on Chavasse Park at Liverpool One, perhaps running over in his mind his plans to fly to Bangkok in March. The venture will see him look at setting up a service for investors in property south-east Asia needing to source occupants on short-stay corporate trips and who want to attract western business. His wife and four month old Charlie will also be travelling to Thailand, while L3 Living continues to offer high specification apartments in Liverpool to corporate and leisure clients; it’s an exciting time for all concerned. Among Liverpool One’s offering of eateries, is an opulently decorated, plush and spacious interior with a diverse menu from pasta and pizza to seafood to peruse over a glass of Pellegrino, or a glass of wine from the extensive list. At L3 Living, the city’s restaurants and entertainment are an important part of the welcome package to clients on business and leisure, and the website

promotes the city’s cultural events and big football matches, and offers a single person rate for business clients on midweek sojourns. For Luke, the quality of accommodation and service is a priority: “We offer apartments The Tower, The Albany, The Unity and Trafalgar Warehouse in Liverpool 365 days a year, all central locations with complimentary broadband and maid service.” The firm is now looking at expanding into more, city centre locations to meet demand. As our starters arrive, calamari fritti for me; a substantial portion served with a fat chunk of lemon and mayonnaise, Luke tucks into Bonni’s mozzarella. For our mains, Luke chooses the crab linguine in a basil cream sauce with sun-blushed tomatoes, and I opt for the baked sea bass. It arrives as a whole fish wrapped in paper, with braised fennel and roasted new potatoes; and the fish is exceptionally tender. Luke continues: “Others are reducing jobs, cutting back on advertising spend, but we’ve taken on more staff and offered

pay increases and now, while growth is subdued, we’re looking at expanding our brand and our portfolio. “We recently held an event to showcase the work of local artists; we’re proactive, and that’s what will get us through the downturn. I’d like to see more companies investing in the city and its people.” At Christmas, Luke let several apartments free of charge to help families with relatives in Liverpool’s hospitals, allowing the patients some respite from the ward and a chance to relax and enjoy a few days of comfort. Over an authentic Italian cappuccino, Luke tells me that the new business class service will be taking service to a new level. Offering late check-ins and check-outs, the use of photocopier and scanner, daily housekeeping, complimentary refreshments, premium spa toiletries and a bathrobe. Welltravelled Luke’s intention is to make corporate guests’ visits as comfortable as possible: “Liverpool is a fantastic place, and we want our guests to experience that.”

“ I’d like to see more companies investing in the city and its people”

To book online with L3 Living visit www.l3living.com, or telephone 0845 388 9257. Business class service costs an additional £40 per person per stay and includes a dedicated account manager.

Highlight: The décor is stunning with opulent colours and chandeliers. Chef’s Special: I’m going back to try the Vitello alla Milanese – veal medallions make a change from chicken in this traditional dish, and come with spaghetti and a chilli, garlic, tomato and basil sauce.

Fashion V Sport

//// STREETLIFE WALKER ART GALLERY, 13 FEBRUARY UNTIL 31 MAY 2009

Dare, display, play and desire; these are the competing themes on the pitch in this exhibition, which is pulling in fashion conscious crowds. How do advertising campaigns for fashion brands use sports personalities to up the ante, and why does sportswear hold cred on the street are just some of the questions under the spotlight. One highlight has to be the staple grey tracksuit, reworked into covetable couture by Vivienne Westwood.
