For 24 hours on May 1, 2018, Mount Mercy hosted #HaveMercyGiveMercy, our firstever day of spirit and support. We invited Mustangs around the world to show their MMU spirit loud and proud—reinforcing just how much we all have and give Mercy! Our goal was 501 total donors (on 5-01) and once we hit that goal, a bonus $25,000 gift from the MMU Board of Trustees would kick in. Not only did we meet the goal (and get the extra $25,000), but you all helped us surpass our target by 133%! WAY TO GO, MUSTANGS! Hundreds of MMU spirit photos of Mustangs wearing blue and yellow and participating in one of our many related events on the Hill were shared all over social media using the hashtag #HaveMercyGiveMercy. Mustang Sally was even spotted galloping around nine companies throughout Cedar Rapids that day.

FIRST-EVER NAMED COLLEGE IS TRULY A TRANSFORMATIONAL GIFT MMU trustee Ron Herold and his wife, Paula (Martin) Herold RN ’61, have continued their generous support for our nursing education leadership with a life-changing gift—establishing Mount Mercy’s first-ever named college, the Martin-Herold College of Nursing & Health. Recognizing our excellence in nursing, the new College will serve as a valuable organizational umbrella for Mount Mercy’s renowned undergraduate and graduate nursing and health care programs—facilitating increased synergies, offerings, and enrollment while addressing critical shortages in health care. Ron and Paula’s pivotal gift provides support for Mount Mercy’s just-launched Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program and creates a permanent endowment to support ongoing demands and future growth in our nursing and health-related programs. Dr. Mary Tarbox ’74, current chair and professor of nursing at Mount Mercy, has accepted the inaugural deanship of the College. Recognized as one of the 100 Great Nurses of Iowa and as a Nurse of the Year by the Iowa Nurses Association, Mary has been on the MMU nursing faculty since 1977.

Before that, she served as a pediatric nurse at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics and in various public health nursing roles. “The Herolds’ gift will enhance the vision for our nursing program, beyond our expectations,” Mary says. “It will provide the community with the quantity and quality of professional nurses needed to meet the growing demands of the health care system—especially in rural Iowa.” Originally from Iowa—Ron from Cresco and Paula from Lawler— the Herolds haven’t lost touch with their small-town Iowa roots, despite moving to Minnesota and then Florida. Ron owned successful manufacturing companies in Stillwater, Minnesota, and Dresser, Wisconsin, and Paula, a 1961 graduate of the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids, worked in pediatrics and maternity nursing in the Twin Cities. The Herolds previously endowed a scholarship for Mount Mercy nursing students from rural Iowa or Minnesota. “We want to turn our success and appreciation into support for the community,” the Herolds say. “Mercy nursing has been a strong influence in our lives, and it is our honor to invest in the continued and future success of Mount Mercy nurses.”

HELPS FUTURE MUSTANGS The first of three sisters, Mary Wall Sheda attended Mount Mercy Academy and the Commercial School where she graduated in 1937 and 1938, respectively. Her sisters, Mariana Regina (Jean) Wall Howell AC ’39 and Laurena Wall Lehman AC ’43, JC ’45, followed her lead as Mount Mercy graduates. Mary was delighted to have two of actor Don Ameche’s sisters as classmates while at the Academy—a fact she proudly stated long after graduating. As a young girl, Mary worked for the Andreas family and babysat for Marty Andreas, who later served on the MMU Board of Trustees for 40 years. Mary spent much of her adult life in Denver, Colorado, and enjoyed golf—having been credited with three holes-in-one during her lifetime. Mary faithfully supported the Mount Mercy Fund, enjoyed attending on-campus reunions and alumni gatherings in Denver, and hosted Mount Mercy presidents and staff in her home. Her proud affiliation with and fond memories of her alma mater prompted Mary to name Mount Mercy partial beneficiary of an annuity. When she passed away on February 8, 2018, Mount Mercy received a generous distribution to establish the Raymond M. and Mary Wall Sheda Scholarship Fund—which provides scholarships to deserving junior and senior students with academic ability. Mary was thrilled when her grandniece Jordyn Lehman ’18 decided to attend Mount Mercy, where she flourished as an impactful, thoughtful leader before graduating in May 2018.

Jordyn Lehman ’18, a native of Iowa City, Iowa, received the Mary Frances Warde Award during the 2018 commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 20. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, and outdoor conservation. This award, named for Mary Frances Warde, the 1843 foundress of the Sisters of Mercy in America, is the highest honor given to a transfer student who graduates from Mount Mercy. With the support of many donors, Jordyn made her way to Mount Mercy as a transfer student and flourished as an impactful, thoughtful leader.

HONORING A NURSING & MERCY COMMUNITY LEADER Anyone who’s been affiliated with nursing or Mercy in Iowa over the past several decades undoubtedly knows Sister James Marie Donahue RN ’51, ’59. Sister James Marie was born in Charles City, Iowa, but grew up and graduated from high school in Dubuque. She completed a three-year nursing diploma program in 1951 at the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids and served as a staff nurse and nursing supervisor for two years before entering the Sisters of Mercy at Our Lady of Mercy Novitiate in Marion, Iowa. A faithful believer in continuing education, Sister James Marie earned a bachelor’s degree from Mount Mercy College in 1959 with majors in biology and psychology. She went on to earn a master’s degree in nursing education from the University of Minnesota in 1962 and a PhD in educational administration from the University of Iowa in 1978. Sister James Marie served as director of the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing from 1965 to 1971, the last five years of its existence. She admits that her toughest challenge during that time was telling nursing students and their families that the School of Nursing was closing—but the closing brought forth new opportunity. Sister James Marie planted the roots of Mount Mercy’s distinguished nursing program when she established our four-year baccalaureate nursing program and served as chair of the Department of Nursing from 1970 to 1987.

» Continued from page 17 In 1987, she was elected president of the Sisters of Mercy community, a leadership role she held for eight years. When her term ended, she began working in the education department at Mercy Medical Center, and, in 2000, assumed the role of board chair for the Mercy Medical Center Foundation, retiring in 2016. Enjoying her retirement, Sr. James Marie relishes Mount Mercy’s annual Alumni Reunion Weekends and loves reminiscing with alumni about the nursing programs at the hospital and Mount Mercy. “It is so rewarding to hear them express how much they valued their education and applied their nursing knowledge and skills in the real world,” says Sister James Marie. In 1999, she received Mount Mercy’s prestigious Distinguished Service Alumni Award. She was also an honoree at Waypoint’s 2004 Tribute to Women of Achievement and selected as one of the 100 Great Iowa Nurses in 2007 by the Iowa Nurses Association. During the 2017 Mount Mercy Alumni Reunion Weekend, graduates of the nursing class of 1977 joined forces to establish the Sister James Marie Donahue Endowed Scholarship in honor of their 40th class reunion. This scholarship fund provides support for Mount Mercy nursing students, with preference given to those in the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program, and will support future generations of students in Mount Mercy’s renowned nursing programs, grounded in the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy. Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids later added a significant gift to the fund in honor of Sister James Marie.

LIFETIME IMPACT New alumni board member Ron Maxa ’06, MBA ’11 came to Mount Mercy as a transfer student and first graduated with a bachelor’s in business, then came back to get his MBA. Ron currently works at Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust as assistant vice president and BSA/operations officer and truly appreciates how much Mount Mercy is growing and focusing on the student experience. “It’s been amazing to see how much Mount Mercy has grown since 2006. SIMPLE WAYS TO MAKE A LASTING DIFFERENCE When it came time for college, Bobbie Oltman ’94 had her heart set on a small campus setting. After receiving a letter from Mount Mercy offering a Presidential Scholarship, she and her parents explored the option and discovered it would cost significantly less to attend Mount Mercy than the other colleges and universities she was considering. Her decision to attend MMU was practical but also life changing. Bobbie flourished at Mount Mercy—a strong aptitude for math led her to pursue it as a major with minors in psychology and computer science. In her first collegiate English course, she became intrigued with professor Jim Grove’s round table discussions. Her logic was different as a math major, and she gained confidence in sharing differing opinions with the class—a skill that has helped her in work and life. Bobbie graduated from MMU in 1994 with only $5,900 in debt and a priceless experience that expanded her world. “I would not be thriving in a position where I get to be mentally creative, challenged, and pushed beyond my expectations if not for Mount Mercy and the financial aid I received,” Bobbie says. Once settled in her career, she began giving faithfully to the Mount Mercy Fund as a way to pay it forward to those who need financial aid. As a product manager at GoDaddy, Bobbie is eligible for a corporate match that doubles her annual gift at no cost to her. Looking for more ways to make a lasting impact on her alma mater, Bobbie worked with a financial planner to name Mount Mercy as partial beneficiary of her 401k plan—giving future Mustangs the support they will need to thrive.

WELLNESS & ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE CENTER

An MMU trustee since 1988, John Rinderknecht has continued his generous support for Mount Mercy with a transformational gift to renovate the Rinderknecht Athletic Center. The Center will be a vibrant and compelling complement to MMU’s newly completed outdoor Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex. As president of Denver-based RAM Development Company, John’s insight, expertise, and generosity will transform an old 28,000 sq. ft. warehouse on 17th Street NE into a stateof-the-art wellness and athletic performance center—serving as a dynamic training facility for Mount Mercy’s 500+ student-athletes, and as a recreational fitness resource for the University’s 2,100+ students, faculty, and staff. “The Rinderknecht Athletic Center will be a major asset for our growing Mount Mercy athletics program,” says Paul Gavin ’88, athletic director. “Providing a top-notch training and fitness center right next to our new outdoor athletic complex will improve our ability to serve our student-athletes, coaches, and the entire campus community.” “I am honored to support the talented efforts of Mount Mercy’s growing studentathlete population, as well as all students, faculty, and staff with the renovation of the Rinderknecht Athletic Center,” John says. “They work hard, study hard, and compete at the highest levels—all while giving back to the Cedar Rapids community. They deserve the best facilities possible.” OPN Architects and Rinderknecht Associates will partner with Mount Mercy to create this project slated for a spring 2019 completion. The namesake company of John’s father, Rinderknecht Associates, has a long history of shaping Mount Mercy’s physical campus with the construction of numerous buildings, including the Plaster Athletic Complex.
