ANZAC DAY CREATIVE WRITING WINNERS In April, Mounties ran an ANZAC Day creative writing competition, where students from the local schools participated in the RSL & Services Clubs Association’s ‘Respect the Day’ campaign. The competition encouraged students to submit a written essay to ‘Explain and demonstrate the importance of Anzac Day for you and your community and why Anzac Day occupies a sacred place in Australians’ hearts. Four finalists from the competition aged from Year 4 to Year 9, were given the opportunity to attend a hosted field trip to the Australian War Memorial and Parliament House in Canberra, Wednesday 24th July 2019. Students were accompanied by Mounties Welfare Officer Paul Whitfield, competition judge and President of Triglav; Peter Krope, their teachers, fellow students and parents. The excursion consisted of an immersive tour of the Australian War Memorial addressed by Dr. Brendan Neilson and a tour of Parliament House that included a lunch with Mr Chris Hayes MP. “Today was fantastic and Thank you for everything you gave us. The trip was smooth and relaxing, and I had so much fun with my friends. We also enjoyed the view. My favourite part was when we went to the Australian War Memorial and everyone was really nice. It was fabulous!” Isabelle Fenech - Winner

LOOK GOOD FEEL BETTER PROGRAM This year Cancer Patients Foundation are one of the many ClubGRANTS recipients who will be supported by Mounties Group and will provide services to local individuals and families affected by cancer. Cancer Patients Foundation run free national community service programs that are dedicated to teaching cancer patients how to manage the appearance-related-side-effects caused by cancer treatment. Women, men and teens participate in practical workshop that are open to anyone undergoing treatment for any sort of cancer. With programs that run annually in over 180 venues nationwide. Locally held workshops at Liverpool Hospital’s Thomas and Rachel Moore Education Centre cover skincare techniques to address common side-effects like dryness and sun sensitivity; makeup tips to help correct and conceal redness, sallowness, pigmentation and dark circles as well as techniques for drawing on eyebrows; and advice on headwear including scarf styling and wig selection.
Participants also benefit from the opportunity to meet others in a similar situation. During the workshops, friendships and additional support networks are formed that can be invaluable during diagnosis and treatment. Christina a workshop attendee, was reluctant to attend at first but after a being encouraged to attend she felt it was a great opportunity for friends to just hang out and get some make-up tips. “Being able to just let go of all the stresses that cancer causes for those two and a half hours is incredible.” Mounties Group are proud to support the Cancer Patients Foundation and their Look Good Feel Better program which help more than 130,000 people nationwide. These programs not only provide a sense of community for those affected, but leave participants feeling empowered and ready to face their cancer diagnosis with confidence.

SPORTS REPORT REUBENN RENNIE We caught up with our very own Mounties Rugby League player and Canterbury Cup representative, Reubenn to get a view on how he went in this year’s season and who he thinks will win the NRL Grand Final. What would you say has been the highlight of the 2019 season? It would definitely have to be representing the Cook Islands in the World Cup qualifier back in June against South Africa. Can you describe any low/high points for the year? There’s been a couple high points this season. One would have to be the start of the season we had in the Canterbury Cup, going through the first 8 rounds without a loss. And on the flip side definitely a low point for our team has been the last couple of months, we couldn’t finish off games and lost 6 games straight before coming back again. Did you hit any milestones you were particularly proud of this year? No real milestones, but a moment that I was particularly proud of this season would have to be being selected to represent the NSW Residents team to play the Queensland Residents early in the season. Which was an awesome experience, even though we didn’t win was still good to be a part of. What is your biggest take away from the 2019 season? Just make the most of every opportunity that comes my way and don’t take anything for granted. Because it’s always all the little moments in footy that lead to the big moments.
What are your goals for 2020? A main goal of mine would be, to be signed full time to an NRL team and eventually make my Debut. Do you have any plans for the off season? One of my best mates is getting married in Thailand in the middle of October, so it will be good to get away for a bit to relax and celebrate with friends. If you could be any player for a game who would you be and why? Definitely Roger Tuivasa Sheck - would love to break a few ankles with his sidestep and acceleration. What ground do you love/hate to play at? I really enjoy playing back home in New Zealand. It is always a tough trip but being based in Sydney we don’t get many games away. So, it’s always good to travel as a team and get to bond a bit. Who do you think will win in the NRL Grand Final? I would love to say Warriors, but I think that ship has sailed. But I don’t think you can go past the Melbourne Storm, always the benchmark of the comp. We wish Reubenn the very best and hope his dreams to debut in the NRL come true!
