That’s an important story, to be sure, but it’s not the whole story. In the following pages, Xpress explores some perhaps less-visited outposts in the current economic landscape: the critical role of small businesses, the bottom-line benefits of paying a “living wage,” and the perspectives of local entrepreneurs who’ve somehow managed to beat the odds. Taken together, these pieces are intended to present a more nuanced picture of what it means to be Open for Business in Western North Carolina in 2011.
