ou have to be on your game to be the Best in WNC in Health and Wellness. Asheville’s history and reputation have made it a center of excellence in health care. Area hospitals consistently win national awards. Our clinics and practitioners — both traditional and alternative — draw both tourists and locals. The abundance of alternative health care modalities, in combination with the availability of top-rated traditional treatments, makes Asheville a great place to live as well as visit for wellness-related issues. Where else could you see a world-class cardiologist in the morning, indulge in a color-light wrap with aura imaging in the afternoon and chill out in a salt cave in the evening? Asheville’s renown as a wellness destination dates to the 1870s, when its climate and fresh mountain air began to draw people for the treatment of tuberculosis and other respiratory diseases. In 1871, the first sanitarium in the country, The Villa, was established in what is now the Kenilworth area. With the arrival of the railroad in Asheville in 1880, thousands of health-seekers flocked to the city.

Boardinghouses catered to visitors who reclined on sleeping porches to take in “the cure.” Doctors at the beginning of the 20th century proclaimed the Asheville plateau between the mountains as the great sanitarium of the eastern United States, helping to establish the town as a health care mecca. Our focus on wellness continues into the 21st century. The local healthcare industry is thriving, posting 14 percent growth in jobs between 2010-2015, according to Bureau of Labor statistics. And according to Xpress’ 2015 reader poll, 95 percent of us walk or jog, and just over one-third do yoga. Participants in this year’s Best of WNC reader poll voted heavily not only for best Physician and Dentist — but also for best Massage Therapist, Yoga Studio and Chiropractor. Please welcome these newcomers to this year’s Hall of Fame: Asheville Women’s Medical Center (Women’s Health Center), Mission Health (Hospital), CarePartners (Hospice) and Groce Funeral Home & Cremation Service (Mortuary/Funeral Services). — Susan Foster X
