eck has donated $50,000 to the Emily Brydon Youth Foundation. Rosemary Brydon, who administrates the charity on behalf of her daughter, said the money will be placed in an endowment fund to help secure the long-term future of the charity, which gives grants to help children in the Elk Valley pursue their sports, arts or other recreation dreams. She added: “We are very grateful to Teck – they presented this at a recent dinner to recognize the many years they have been sponsoring Emily, and it will make a big difference.”

Giddy up to join Wranglers By Bob Sumka Community correspondent

S

now Valley Wranglers is an organization in Fernie for children and adults who are interested in horse riding. This organization was started on May 4, 1971. At present there are 20 children and 40 adults totalling 60 members. There are several categories for people riding horses. First there is leadline group for children who are too young to ride by themselves. Tots group is from five to seven years old, Rug Rats from seven to nine years olds, junior intermediate from ten to twelve years, junior from thirteen to seventeen and finally seniors is for adults over seventeen.

Meetinga take place at the Gymkhana grounds behind the Best Western from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. On Tuesdays people take cattle sorting, on Wednesdays there are riding lessons and on Thursdays there are gymkhana events. There is no other organization in this area for people who want to ride horses. To join this organization a person brings their horse to the Gymkhana grounds. A single membership costs $25 and a family membership costs $30. With this membership a person can ride at the Gymkhana grounds any time they want. Members are trained by Jody Gredzuk, Sue Koran, and Debbie Kolb. Fundraising goes on all

year round. The Lions Club donates money for the use of the Gymkhana grounds when they hold their demolition derby. Other funds are raised by performing security and clean up after graduation at Fernie Secondary. Private organizations also make donations. The executive has a president who is Jody Gredzuk, vice president Debbie Kolb, finance Sue Koran, and secretary Coleen Powell. Executive members are elected once a year. Meetings are held once a month at the ReMax building on Seventh Avenue. Business to be discussed are concerns on improving Gymkhana grounds, financial statements and how to keep the interest up about

their organization. “At current time we are working on improving the grounds. We are in need of better footing, and are looking for donations of sand, and or the donation of a gravel truck and driver to transfer the sand to our location, said Gredzuk. “The current footing is very hard and we are hoping to improve it for both horse and riders’ safety.” In the future, Gredzuk says: “Our plan is to start a annual summer schooling horse show open to all ages and abilities, to introduce our members to showing their horse in a variety of classes.” At present this organization would like more members. If you are interested in joining just phone Jody Gredzuk at 250-423-8990.
