W

hiz-kids are hoping to compete in a robotics world championships – if they can raise enough funds to travel. Fernie Secondary School Robotics Club has won a place in the FIRST Tech Challenge World Championships in Atlanta, USA next month. The group of eight students got through to the competition after taking first place in the Canadian Inspire Award in Red Deer earlier this month. From April 14-17 they will compete against more than 500 teams from more than 25 countries, designing and constructing a robot that can shoot balls and navigate a course. The team is made up of Grade 8 students John Iddon, Colin Li, Cole Goodman; Grade 9 students Ashleigh and Alexandria Butala; Grade 11 student Darby Gravelle and Grade

12 students Christopher Atherton, William Butala. The coach is Bill Bell. But before they get there, the team must raise $15,000 and parent mentor Karri Iddon says they need the community’s help. “The difficulty for our team at this time is that seeing as the world championship is only a month away it does not give us very much time to raise the money to get our team to the competition and it is going to cost the team over $15,000 to go,� she said. “Our club does not have extra funds. We have relied on our sponsors to get the equipment required to build our robot and these were donated to our team in the beginning of the school year. “We are hoping that we can find some more sponsorship right away or the team will not be able to go to the world championship, which would be such a disappointment as the team has worked very hard to get the opportun-
