mily Brydon’s charity work was honoured when Sport BC presented her with a Community Champion Award at the 44th Sport B.C. Athlete of the Year awards in Richmond last Wednesday. Brydon, who announced her retirement from ski racing two weeks ago, was presented with the award for her work founding the Emily Brydon Youth Foundation, which provides financial support to kids in the Elk Valley who otherwise could not pursue sports, education and artistic aspirations. She has also worked with Right to Play, which promotes sport as a way to build communities around the world, and has pledged to work with KidSport, a

Canadian charity that gave Emily herself a grant in 1995 to help her launch her ski racing career. “With her continued contributions both on and off the slopes, Emily has shown the difference one person can make in the lives of many,” said Rick Christiaanse, Executive Vice-President of Sport BC. “We are proud to present her with this award as recognition of her tireless efforts to champion sport and build community.” “It’s really fitting for where I am at in my career and what I value,” Brydon told The Free Press last week. “It’s really an honour, it makes me really happy that I have been recognized for that now.” She added: “I have never been bestowed a greater honour than that of the Community Champion
