mily Brydon is one of a handful of citizens in the history of Fernie to be presented with Freedom of the City in honour of her international skiing career and community work. As The Free Press went to print, final preparations were underway for the celebration on Wednesday evening, when she was to be presented with the key to the City of Fernie. Mayor Cindy Corrigan said the City decided to give Emily the honour in recognition of her skiing

They are all setting aside their personal schedules to be able to attend.” • See next week’s Free Press for a full report on the event.

Public art in Fernie might be as simple as sidewalk mosaics, murals, or banners. It might mean encouraging innovative architecture, or installing monuments or statues. Whatever the project, the works of art would be publically accessible. But in which of Fernie’s public spaces should art be placed? Would you like to see a bronze statue of a bear, or moose? Would you like to create a series of mountain images through mosaic? Please contribute your thoughts on Twitter or Facebook (via www. theartsstation.com). The process for Public art begins with you!

einz Weixelbaum and Judy McMahon (Owners) of The Guide’s Hut have decided to sell their store after 13 years. “I just felt the time was right and I have a four year old son at home and want to spend more time with him” stated Heinz. The name will stay the same as the new owners (a local Fernie couple) take possession on the 1st of June, so it is business as usual until then. “Although we would like to clear some of the inventory” added Store Manager Emilie Dabros, “this is the reason for the Inventory Liquidation Sale that we are having with discounts up to 75% off.” Heinz and Judy moved to Fernie in 1994 and in 1995 bought the building that houses The Guide’s Hut. It is a heritage site and is over 100 years old. In 1997, The Guide’s Hut opened it’s doors as the third sports store in town with the concept being to satisfy the need for back country ski touring, telemark, alpine, and hiking gear, very soon followed by mountain biking equipment. The name “The Guide’s Hut” was conceived by a local telemarking friend and “to us it reflects a warm welcoming place to come in from the cold or heat”, said Judy. As for the future, Heinz, Judy and Wolfgang plan to stay in the area and spend their time enjoying the outdoors. We invite everyone to drop by on Saturday, May 15th for
