S

now in August. Grizzly bears pawing the moss for food. Icebergs and ice cliffs and a raucous river. In the middle of it all, there was Sukey Bryan, unscrolling thick rolls of paper on the ground to draw and paint Alaska. She was doing a 10-day artist residency in the Denali National Park and Preserve, gathering sketches and quick acrylic paintings that she would later use to create her oil paintings and prints back in her Stanford home studio. She was also taking photos, thousands of them. “It was such a profound feeling to be alone in such wild immensity. I just can’t shake it,” Bryan later wrote in an artist’s statement. Three years later, those 10 days continue to yield rich inspiration for Bryan, as seen in her prints and giant paintings of ice formations, waterfalls, peaks, rivers and snow. She’s exhibiting several works this fall at the Community School of Music and Arts in Mountain View in a Mohr Gallery solo show called “Glacier Works.”

DRAMATIC, ICY IMAGES COME FROM STANFORD PAINTER’S TIME IN A REMOTE ALASKA CABIN

The show runs through Nov. 27 at CSMA, 230 San Antonio Circle. Works will include “Ice Walls,” a triptych of oil paintings depicting the chilly blues of ice walls above a river floating with ice chunks. The darknesses buried in the blues hint at the cliffs’ depths, the silt in the ice and the mud in the water. “The ice has a strangeness to it,” Bryan says in her studio, a converted, comfortably large garage with natural light and sweeping white walls. “It’s quite beautiful.” To help capture her subject’s layers, Bryan starts her canvases by painting them an earthy brown. She’ll spread a canvas out on the floor and go at it with large brushes. Later, she tacks it to the wall, often waiting a few days for each layer of oil paint to dry, and still later in the process it gets stretched over a frame. When a painting gets really tall, she has to climb up and down a ladder to work on it. It’s a warm afternoon in the studio, but Bryan still seems to see Alaska vividly — in her art around her, and in her recollections of her 2008 artist residency. been to Alaska. She certainly didn’t see herself as an adventurer. Then she wound up in a cabin in a park larger than the state of New Hampshire. Bryan’s husband and sons were also in Denali for vacation at the same time, but the park was so big that they were a twoand-a-half-hour drive away. Park rangers would periodically check on Bryan, but for the most part, she says, “I’ve never been so alone.” She smiles and adds, “I was a little lonely, but it was really good for me to follow my thoughts.” Bryan wasn’t completely without company. There were lots of gregarious birds, and one day a small red fox stood and watched her paint. Also, her riverside cabin seemed to be “right near a thoroughfare of grizzlies going down to the water,” she says. Bryan developed a habit of singing to herself as she walked in the wilderness, to alert the bears to her presence and keep from sur-

prising them. All the while, she thought about the pristine nature of the wild, what she calls “nature’s contradictory delicacy and power,” and the worry about losing the glaciers to climate change. She felt she was documenting a resource that might be lost. “I hope that my work brings to mind the importance of the small elements in nature as well as awareness of its immensity, terrible strength and all-encompassing import,” she wrote in an artist’s statement. “I want my work to help my audience to hold nature close, to see that we are not separate in our life experience from other life forms.” At the Community School of Music and Arts, Bryan’s audience will include students as young as preschoolers who attend classes and walk through the lobby gallery. Linda Covello, the art-school director and gallery’s curator, said she thinks Bryan’s work will inspire the painting students with its large

scale and careful use of layering. Covello learned of Bryan’s art when the artist sent her a portfolio. “It looked really monumental in scale ... I thought that would be really exciting for our space,” she said. Mohr Gallery has exposed concrete walls, which lend the venue an earthiness, Covello said. “Land forms look great against these walls.” Other venues where Bryan has shown her art include the Palo Alto Art Center, the Hang Art Gallery in San Francisco and the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara. Her piece “The fire within,” a series of 12 panels painted with blazing images, has been displayed as a “liturgical artwork” in churches including Stanford University’s Memorial Church and the First Lutheran and All Saints’ Episcopal churches in Palo Alto. Fire is also a common theme in Bryan’s art. At its heart, her work is all about elemental subjects larger than life and full of life: fire and ice,

Lynnette Fumiko Cummins, of Stillwater, Oklahoma died, Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at home. Born in Mountain View, California, March 30, 1975, to Janice Styles & Ian Cummins. She lived for and loved her two little girls. Fumi was a true competitor at heart. From a young age she enjoyed BMX racing and won many trophies over the years. She also loved German Shepherds and turned that love into a successful business breeding, raising, and training them. Bryan figures her Denali time will continue to inspire at least a few more prints and paintings. Looking at one of her paintings of snow, she says she was lucky to see a snowfall during her time there, in August. “The weather changes really quickly: rain, clouds, rainbows,” she says, then pauses, struck by an idea for another series. “That’s another possibility: skies.”

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it GRILLING UP A HEFTY HELPING OF THE ‘GOOD OLD DAYS’

I

n a town as plugged-in as Mountain View, the longstanding burger joint Clarke’s is a monument to a simpler time — harking back to an age when gas was cheap and El Camino Real wasn’t so congested, and before engineers and chip manufacturers put the “silicon� in Silicon Valley. That’s how owner Jim Blach sees it. A Mountain View resident since 1954, the octogenarian says buying Clarke’s from its previous owner in 1970 was an easy deci-

sion. “We’ve become a standard for excellent hamburgers in this area,� Blach says, noting that the longevity of Clarke’s, along with the very American food it serves — burgers, hot dogs, shakes and fries — means that the experience of coming to his restaurant has been passed down from one generation to the next and holds a special place in the collective memories of entire families. Founded in 1945, Clarke’s conjures a powerful nostalgia

in people, Blach says. “It reminds them of what they call ‘the good old days.’” Taking an if-it-ain’tbroke-don’t-fix-it approach to running the restaurant, Blach says that while he has added more items to the menu, he hasn’t deviated one iota from the Clarke’s original recipe. If it was good then, it’s good now, he figures. “That’s what people want — good food,” he says of the charcoal-broiled “Clarkesburgers” ($5.95) his restaurant serves. “It’s just like grilling a burger in your backyard. I’ve hade so many customers who have said, ‘Don’t ever change a thing!’” Lee Phoenix, who hails from the Midwest and fondly recalls many afternoons spent munching on backyard barbecued burgers, applauds Blach’s approach, and is especially pleased he has maintained the condiment bar — a somewhat curious feature, stocked with lettuce, onion,

ketchup, various mustards, hot sauces and relish, and even peperoncini. “I love that you can dress your own burger,” says Phoenix, who works nearby and has been coming to Clarke’s about once a month for more than a year. She always gets the same thing: a blue-cheese burger ($7.45), a side of sweet potato fries ($1.50 for a single serving, $3.25 for a basket) and a vanilla shake ($3.85). Though Clarke’s has been voted the best burger in town many times in the Mountain View Voice’s “Readers’ Choice” poll — including this year — it won’t be winning a prize for interior design any time soon. And yet one might make the case — as Phoenix does — that a burger joint should not be preoccupied with aesthetics. “That’s what I like about it!” she says, noting that she doesn’t come to Clarke’s for the ambiance. “It’s about the food.” Phoenix says she is also drawn

to Clarke’s because of its most decided lack of ambiance. The restaurant’s seating areas are all open to outside air and on a recent fall afternoon flies buzzed freely in and out of the place. Yet she didn’t seem to pay them any mind as she

sipped her milkshake between bites of fries and voiced her plans to return soon and try one of the many breakfast items at Clarke’s. Phoenix’s friend Jude Bartlett, who was at the restaurant for the first time, agreed. “My shake was

great,� she said, noting that it is made with real ice cream and so thick she had to eat the first half with a spoon. In addition to its classic staples, Clarke’s offers a turkey burger ($5.95), various sandwiches

including fish ($6.25), chicken ($7.50), steak ($10.95) and rib ($6.95), and a vegetarian “garden burger� ($6.45). The restaurant also cooks breakfast (from $4.95 to $10.95) and serves wine (from $4 for a glass to $14.75 for a liter),

along with a variety of beers (from $2.75 for bottled domestic to $12 for a large pitcher of microbrew). Clarke’s is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. On Fridays the restaurant stays open an extra hour, closing at 10 p.m.

(Century 16, Century 20) Will Reiser, the writer of this film, is himself a cancer survivor, so however this semiautobiographical story may end, it at least comes with the guarantee that it knows whereof it speaks. Like his creator, 27-year-old character Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) discovers he’s developed a spinal cancer. He begins as an overly cautious individual, but as his illusions of order crumble, he allows himself to indulge his emotions and cross behavioral boundaries. Gordon-Levitt excels, partly as an amusingly deadpan straight man to Seth Rogen (playing a version of himself as Adam’s best bud) and Anjelica Huston (lovable as Adam’s demonstrative mother), but more importantly as an Everyman navigating his mortality. “50/50� proves winningly humane as a carpe diem comedy designed to remind us, gently, that what matters most is being true to one another and ourselves. Rated R for language throughout, sexual content and some drug use. One hour, 40 minutes. — P.C.

(Century 16, Century 20) According to “Anonymous,� the true author of Shakespeare’s plays was Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford. As the theory goes, the aristocrat found a front so as not to compromise his position with the political intimations and liberality of his plays (because, after all, a poor guy who never went to college couldn’t possibly have written them). Screenwriter John Orloff offers wildly overreaching historical fiction, dotted with salacious conjecture (two words: accidental incest) and inaccuracies that range from trivial to head-scratchingly bald. As played by Rhys Ifans, de Vere comes off as a seriously repressed cold fish. Even allowing the film’s conceit that circumstances force de Vere to hold back his passions, we’re never convinced this guy ever took delight in his own freewheeling humor and poetic soul. Rated PG-13 for some violence and sexual content. Two hours, 10 minutes. — P.C.

Mike Morris (George Clooney) is looking good heading into the Ohio Democratic Primary. As the Republican machinery manuevers to get out the vote for Morris’ less electable rival, Morris’ team parries and thrusts. Rival campaign managers Paul Zara (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and Tom Duffy (Paul Giamatti) clearly have read their Machiavelli; the film’s central conflict begins to unfold when Duffy, hoping to poach a keen political mind, makes an overture to Myers. A true believer in his own candidate, Myers declines, but complications ensue when top-tier reporter Ida Horowicz (Marisa Tomei) gets wind of his secret meeting with the other side. (Aquarius) “Margin Call� is a dramatization of a crucial 24-hour period at a fictional Wall Street investment bank, MBS, with most of the story unfolding within its glass-encircled high-rise offices. The canary in the coal mine is the bank’s Risk Assessment & Management department, just gutted by a round of layoffs. Out with the trash goes the man running the department (Stanley Tucci’s Eric Dale), but he leaves some data in the hands of his young protege Peter Sullivan (Zachary Quinto), along with two ominous words: “Be careful.� Sullivan, who left rocket science for finance, extracts an inescapable conclusion from the data: The bank will tank. Beane hooks up with young economics whiz Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), an unheralded wunderkind in the value of baseball statistics. Together the duo eschews standard baseball wisdom and begins revamping the team using an analytical/mathematical approach, much to the chagrin of the organization’s more traditionally minded scouting department. Charlie is down on his luck when he gets word that the mother of his estranged young son (Dakota Goyo) has died, leaving Max without a guardian. Max’s aunt Debra (Hope Davis) and her hubby Marvin (James Redhorn) are eager for custody, but the unscrupulous Charlie sees an opportunity to make a quick buck. The good and gifted doctor, portrayed by Banderas with clinical coldness, is not what he seems — nor is anyone else in this movie. As the Byzantine backstories unspool, the true natures of the characters surface. One flashback involves Ledgard’s shy daughter (Blanca Suarez), who meets a nice young man (Jan Cornet) at a party.
