PRINCESS ON WHEELS: Emma Ham, 5, is transported by staff from the old El Camino Hospital facility to the new one on Sunday, Nov. 15. Emma’s appendix was taken out the day before, but she was receiving “princess” treatment from hospital staff, according to her parents. She was the first pediatric patient to be moved as part of a well-rehearsed switch to El Camino’s new facility, which came online Sunday morning. A total of 119 patients were moved in a little over four hours. For full story, see page 1.

or local women looking for hope, and working towards better health, there’s Hope to Health. Hope to Health, or H2H, is a women’s philanthropy group that funds projects and programs specifically for women at El Camino Hospital. The group is based on a similar organization at a hospital in Florida. H2H was founded in 2005, when about 20 women approached El Camino, taking out a charter under its Foundation. “We decided that we wanted to put together a group of women who were interested in philanthropy but wanted a voice in where that money would go,” said member

Betsy Dawes, who has been involved with H2H since its inception. Members of H2H pay $1,000 annually, and 100 percent of that money, Dawes said, goes to fund their projects — all of which are related to women’s health, and are located within the El Camino Hospital District. The members meet monthly, and every year draw up a project list that is approved by vote. “It’s just women who really want to have an impact at this level and who are already believers in the hospital and its mission,” Dawes said. She added that “A lot of the women are involved in other aspects” of See HOPE TO HEALTH, page 22 NOVEMBER 20, 2009 ■ MOUNTAIN VIEW VOICE ■

the hospital. Now in its fourth year, H2H has contributed around $160,000 to women’s health issues. Its membership is about 35 women strong, and growing. Projects have included funding mammograms and gynecological services for the uninsured, giving care packages to women in the cancer center, providing money for El Camino’s Elder Care consulting services, and helping start a mood disorders program for women suffering from post partum depression. “We’ve really tried to have a lot of variety in the projects over the years that we’ve supported, Dawes said. The group works closely with the El Camino Women’s Hospital, which was started in 2008.

The teens-only H2H group started last spring. Under the advisory of Dawes, it works on issues that affect teenage girls, like eating disorders. The hope, Dawes said, is to encourage membership from a young age, so that girls will eventually come back and join H2H. She said the group may develop a mid-range membership for college-aged women and young professionals. In the end, she said, it’s about coming together and making a larger impact. “I could give $1,000 to a hospital and maybe buy a stethoscope, Dawes said. “But if you pool your money, it’s really powerful. V

There is a social component to H2H as well. The group holds events — like a recent “girls’ night out at Pinkies Nail Salon in Los Altos — which are meant to be fun as well as substantive. Members pay to attend these events, and often help bring in prospective members as well. Mountain View has joined a statewide coalition of cities working to combat rising obesity. The Healthy Eating Active Living — or HEAL — Cities Campaign hopes to reduce obesity by implementing better city policies, such as more bikeways, farmers markets, pedestrian walkways, community gardens and healthy retail food environments. HEAL Cities provides free training and assistance for the adoption of these policies. Advocates say local amenities like

CANCER SUPPORT GROUP WELCOMES SPEAKERS El Camino Hospital’s “Healthy Young Attitude, or HYA, a cancer support group for adults between 18 and 35, heard from two guest speakers at their regular meeting Wednesday: Dr. William Buchholz and Dr. Susan Buchholz spoke to attendees about survivorship and the “psycho-social effects of cancer on young adults. According to Pam Lehner of the Cancer Center Concierge, young adults with cancer have different needs and questions than other populations. Wednesday’s talk included topics such as the emotional component of being a survivor. HYA typically meets the third Wednesday of every month and is open to young adults with cancer or who have received treatment for cancer. The parent trap WHAT EVERY COUPLE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT REPRODUCTIVE MEDICINE By Dr. Anthony Dobson

B

etween 10 and 15 percent of all reproductive-age couples in the U.S. are subfertile, which means there is a fairly high chance you may have trouble starting a family. It is therefore useful to discuss how you and your partner will react to the possibility of diminished fertility before attempting to conceive a baby. Getting the right information and treatment can provide hope and peace of mind if you end up having difficulty conceiving. Before attempting to start a family, it is a good idea to have a preconception consultation with your gynecologist or primary care physician. Your doctor will review your medical history to make sure it is safe for you to carry a pregnancy, and ensure that you are not on medications or have medical conditions that could pose risks to the pregnancy or your unborn child. Your doctor can also order some basic tests if he or she suspects that subfertility may be an issue for you and your partner. For men, these tests include a sperm count. For women, doctors test the reproductive hormones and check to make sure the fallopian tubes are open. Finally, your doctor can refer you to a fertility specialist if needed.

Q:

How do I know when it is time to consult a specialist in fertility and reproductive endocrinology?

A:

Referral to a fertility specialist is warranted if you: â– Have been trying to conceive for more than a year without success and are less than 35 years of age; â– Have been trying for six months or less and are 35 to 37 years of age; â– Are 38 years of age and older; or â– Have medical or reproductive issues that compromise your fertility, such as irregular menstrual cycles, blocked fallopian tubes, diminished ovarian reserve or male factor infertility.

Q:

My partner and I wanted to start a family, but with the recession, we’ve decided to wait. How long is it safe to do so?

A:

Because every woman is an individual, there is no set date when it will become hard to conceive. However, in general, it

becomes more difficult to conceive around the ages of 35 to 37 years. We live at a time when advances in reproductive medicine can help some women to conceive at the end of their reproductive potential (early 40s, for most women). However, the majority of women who try to conceive this late in life either fail to realize their dream of a child, or choose to conceive using eggs donated by another woman. The use of donor eggs allows couples to expand the window of opportunity and start a family later in life. The best advice I can give is to understand and be comfortable with your options. Get evaluated by a physician in order to have an idea of your fertility potential. And if you eventually want to start a family, don’t delay too long.

Q:

Since fertility treatments can be expensive, is there one method that has the best success rate?

A:

The types of medical treatments necessary to conceive really are as individual as the patients who need them. Depending on test results and your age and health factors, your reproductive medicine specialist may recommend ovulation induction with oral or injection medications, artificial insemination or in-vitro fertilization (IVF). For some women, the recommended treatment may involve surgery to fix a problem such as fibroids or endometriosis. In California, state law requires insurers to offer group plans that include coverage for infertility diagnosis and treatment. However, the law does not require employers to purchase these plans for their employees, and the law specifically exempts IVF procedures. As a result, many patients must pay for infertility treatments themselves. If this is your situation, don’t be embarrassed about discussing your financial concerns with your doctor. He or she can give you the most accurate picture possible of your chance of conceiving using various fertility treatments. Once you know the various treatment strategies and your individual fertility potential, you will be better prepared to decide which approach to starting a family is right for you. V

othing will benefit human health and increase the chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet. This quotation by Albert Einstein greets patrons at Garden Fresh, a vegan Chinese restaurant in Mountain View. It is followed by pearls of vegetarian wisdom from great thinkers as diverse as Gandhi, Pythagoras, Tolstoy and da Vinci. Above the panel of quotes sits a jovial little Buddha figure. For the less philosophical, a “Vegetarian Starter Kit by PETA is also available as you walk in. The pamphlet quotes celebrities

such as Pamela Anderson, Natalie Portman and Paul McCartney in advocacy of the vegetarian lifestyle. All this literature might make some think twice about what goes into their bodies. But nothing persuades as convincingly as a satisfying meal. I am not a strict vegetarian but I prefer high-quality vegetarian food over meat when it’s available. Going vegetarian doesn’t have to feel like a sacrifice, especially when the food is good as it is at Garden Fresh. The “Vegi Mongolian Chicken ($6.95 lunch, $8.95 dinner), for example, will never pass for real Continued on next page

chicken, but its lightness and ability to thoroughly absorb seasoning make it a great alternative. The dish is made of soybean gluten, a vegetable protein (not to be confused with the gluten found in wheat or rye). It is served with sauteed onions and other noodle-like ornaments, all in chef Robert Liang’s special spicy sauce, which characterizes many of the dishes. Even selecting “medium spicy” gives the lips a scintillating burn — and accidentally biting into one of the tiny red peppers that are thrown into the mix could scald the palate for days to come. Liang and his wife Roberta are originally from Taiwan, where they belonged to a sect of Buddhism that discourages meat consumption as part of its philosophy of nonviolence. Today the pair runs this modest restaurant, which has moved up and down the Peninsula over the years and currently resides on the corner of Miramonte Avenue and El Camino Real, neighboring a BaskinRobbins, a pool supply shop, an Army surplus store and a dive bar. Far from upscale or artsy, the Garden Fresh decor is very simple. The food, however, is excellent and appropriately priced; it doesn’t need visual pizzazz or a chic location to make up for anything. Hostess Alice Liang welcomes

patrons to the tiny restaurant with bright hospitality. She seems to remember customers after their second visit, chats about family and business, and is quick to make recommendations. Complimentary soup is served almost instantly — a choice of hot-and-sour soup or the corn-and-tofu chowder. The chowder is soothingly delicate, so make sure to eat it on a clear palate. An extra serving of thick brown rice ($1.50) is recommended with most dishes to soak up the sauces. The menu features a large selection of mostly East Asian food but also includes the vegi burger with vegetable ($4.50) and Indian dishes such as vegetarian curry chicken (or, if you prefer, “chicken,” with quotes around the word) ($6.45 lunch, $8.95 dinner). Moo shu rolls ($2.50) served in translucent wrapping make for fragrant and refreshing appetizers. Spring rolls ($4.50), often available as vegetarian options even in regular Chinese restaurants, are less greasy than usual at Garden Fresh. But the greatest masterpiece on the menu is the orange vegetarian steak ($9.95), made with homemade shiitake mushroom with orange-flavored sauce and served with steamed broccoli. The shiitake mushroom steak doesn’t resemble regular mushrooms in the slightest; its texture is thick and chewy, but not gamy like real See GARDEN FRESH, page 26

(Century 16, Century 20) The manga/ anime/video game franchise that is “Astro Boy began with Osamu Tezuka’s 1951 comic-book creation of a robot boy who longed for parental love. A new CGI-animated feature film begins at the beginning: a mad scientist’s attempt to replace his dead son with a robot patterned on the boy’s DNA.When “Astro (Freddie Highmore) discovers he’s not Toby, son of Dr. Tenma (Nicolas Cage), but a super-powered robot boy, his feelings are mixed. At first, he’s euphoric: He can fly! And as he will later discover, his “blue core of “pure positive energy also fuels arm-cannons and machine guns that pop out of his butt cheeks. But his “father, realizing that a robot cannot replace a son, can’t stand to look at Astro. Orphaned, the robot boy becomes the target of Metro City’s corrupt president (Donald Sutherland), who wishes to keep the technology under wraps. At this point, “Astro Boy conjures the social commentary of “WALL-E and the existential funk of “Frankenstein. Rated PG for some action and peril, and brief mild language. One hour, 34 minutes.— P.C.

PIRATE RADIO ✭✭✭

(Palo Alto Square, Century 20) Operating in the North Sea, the pirates transmit the mid-1960s explosion of pop rock to British portable radios, homes and workplaces. While the stuffy governmentsanctioned BBC won’t play the popular music for even an hour a day, Radio Rock (based on the famed Radio Caroline) offers a “countdown to ecstasy all day and all of the night. Twenty-three million listeners tune in. Upper-class Quentin (Bill Nighy) helms the old fishing trawler and its motley radio crew who gain star status across the U.K. Rated: R for language and some sexual content, including brief nudity. 1 hour, 55 minutes.— S.T.
