Surroundings and Economy Running Springs is a mountain community in the San Bernardino Mountains. It is an inholding in the San Bernardino National Forest. Situated at the junction of SR-18 and SR-330, it is a major gateway to the mountain communities of Lake Arrowhead, Arrowbear, Green Valley Lake, and Big Bear and is the closest community to Snow Valley Mountain Resort. It lies some 16 miles northeast of the city of Highland, California, up State Highway 330, at an elevation of 6,030 feet. While there is no primary industry in Running Springs, there are service industries geared to the tourist market, as the San Bernardino National Forest is a highly popular year-round tourist destination. Also, taking advantage of the forested setting, the area is home to multiple summer camps, such as Pali Adventures, which also houses an outdoor education program known as Pali Institute. Additionally, Running Springs, together with surrounding communities, form a bedroom community for commuters who are employed in San Bernardino and points beyond who are willing to tolerate the notorious Southern California commute in order to live above the city's considerable smog and pollution. Running Springs is a member community of the Rim of the World, an inhabited stretch of the San Bernardino Mountains and wholly contained in the San Bernardino National Forest. The Rim (as it is locally known) extends from Crestline to Big Bear, a distance of some 30 miles. Running Springs is served by Charles Hoffman Elementary in Running Springs, Rim of the World High School and Mary Putnam Henck Intermediate School both situated in Lake Arrowhead. Logging in the San Bernardino Mountains was once done on a large scale, with the Brookings Lumber Company operation the largest. It operated on 8,000 acres (32 km2) between Fredalba and Hunsaker Flats (present-day Running Springs), and extending northward to Heap's Ranch and Lightningdale (near Green Valley Lake) between 1899 and 1912. It built a logging railroad to bring logs to the mill at Fredalba. About 60% of the finished lumber was hauled by wagon down the steep grades to the Molino box factory in Highland, CA, which made packing crates for the citrus grown in the area. The remaining 40% went to the company's retail lumber yard in San Bernardino. In 1912, the company dismantled the Fredalba sawmill and moved much of the machinery to Brookings, Oregon.

The mule drawn Log Hauler or “slip tongue” depicts the rich history of logging in the Running Springs area, which in 1890 was first named “Hunsaker Flats.” Immigration to the valley below and the orange groves of Redlands set the stage for the logging industry for box crates and building lumber in the San Bernardino Mountains. The Highland Lumber Company and later the Brookings Lumber Company conducted substantial logging operations from Fredalba to Green Valley Lake. They even operated a narrow gauge railway for transporting logs to the mill located in what is now Fredalba and Smiley Park, directly south of Running Springs. Lumber was precariously hauled down the “City Creek Toll Road,” later named Highway 330. The logging industry gave way to property investors and in the 1920’s the first community subdivisions for vacation properties and camps arose. With the continued population growth of Southern California, these beautiful San Bernardino Mountains have provided unsurpassed opportunities for recreation and year-round living. This is the only cross country ski area with groomed trails in southern Calif. They are members of the Cross Country Ski Areas Association....a North American organization that promotes the sport. Because snowmaking is not available at Rim Nordic, waiting for mother nature has been difficult some years. Brainstorming year to year was just part of the operating plan. In 1994, Kerry was racing his mountain bike often in Big Bear. He decided the trails at Rim Nordic were just right for mountain biking & so was born Rim Nordic Racing. They have hosted cross country, Super D & downhill mountain bike events as well as other viable options, including summer trail runs, winter biathlons, TV commercials, soap operas scenes, & The History Channel stories. Rim Nordic hosted the Calif. State Senior Winter Games for over 10 years. They hosted the Western States Fire & Police Games mountain biking events twice. A TV commercial for the U.S. Coast Guards using their mountain bike trails was a fun endevore. The maps of each artist’s house will be available at the downtown businesses, plus a description of what each place has for sale. You will find one-of-a-kind treasures of all sorts, all homemade and hand-crafted with great skill and creativity. One popular place is Sandy Ellis’ house on Holcomb Creek Drive. All year long she makes candles, afghans, scarves, and other hand-crocheted items. Her husband makes candle holders out of manzanita branches; there are mosaic birdhouses --- it’s a fun gathering, with warm hospitality, goodies to munch on and so much to see and talk about. CAMPING

Runners in Green Valley Lake’s Aquathon held on August 13, 2016 • Photo by Mike Lee/Starlight Photography

Located at the end of Green Valley Lake Road (off Hwy. 18) near Running Springs and Arrowbear Lake, you’ll climb the windy road to get to the small community of Green Valley Lake. As you drive through you’ll find your worries and stress melting away. This campground is filled with huge beautiful trees that provide a lot of shade for campers and its tranquil setting adds to the outdoor experience that campers seek and appreciate. The campground, maintained by the U.S. Forest Service, lies beyond the lake and past the Green Valley Lake Fire station. Just keep driving through “town” and you’ll end up at the campground. Relax, breathe deeply and know that a comforting, tranquil experience is there to greet you. There are some requirements that campers need to know. The first one is that due to the severe drought absolutely no outdoor BBQ or other outdoor cooking is allowed. While there are fire rings in some of the camping areas due to the severity of the drought and the extreme dry forest the fire rings cannot be used. However, the tranquil campground has tables, flush toilets and water and campers can use their portable propane stoves. As a reminder, if you intend to camp you should know that due to the drought riding off-road vehicles are not allowed inside the campground boundaries. Campsites are available on a first-come, firstserve basis. One of the cautions that the Forest Service gives is that all campers should be aware that there are bear signs posted throughout the area because, after all, they do live on the mountain. Always call ahead to verify that any of the campsites are available and check with the closest ranger station.

HIKING The Best Hikes Near Running Springs There are so many great little hiking trails in the Running Springs area. You can spend weeks out here in our pretty alpine forests and not hike the same trails. The very best of these trails are located at either Keller Peak or Rim Nordic. If you go for a drive up Keller Peak Road you will see trails all over the place on both sides of the road. The most popular trail is Exploration Trail which is well signed and starts at the bottom of Keller Peak Road. You can start hiking it here or you can drive three miles up Keller Peak Road. Just after the road forks make a right and there is a large parking area right there where you can hike downbound on Exploration Trail. This upper part of the trail winds through a manzanita forest and has a glorious view of the valley below. If you enjoy rock climbing, about a mile below the junction on Keller Peak that takes you to either the look out tower or the Children’s Forest nature loop there is a large stack of boulders on the north side of the road that is great for climbing. If you follow the trail along the rock face you can climb to the top of the boulders. This is an excellent place to watch the sunset (Bring flashlights for the walk down in the dark!) If you have small children with you check

Winter 2016

out the Children’s Forest nature loop where the road merges to the left (Opposite way from the lookout tower) This is a nice half mile stroll through the forest with views of the Snow Valley. Another great hike in Running Springs is Coyote Rock Trail. This trailhead lies in the very back of the upper ball field at Charles Hoffman Elementary School. The first half mile up this trail is incredibly steep. After that the trail gets a lot easier. You can follow this trail up to Coyote Rock to check out the view, or follow it back to Mill Peak and Keller Peak if you take one of the northern bound legs. This is one of our newer hiking trails in Running Springs and it leads to some excellent view points! It is another great one to watch the sunset! Every year hundreds of hikers from around the world traverse the 2,650 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail between Mexico and Canada. It’s not unheard of to see these folks hitch hiking on the sides of roads and highways in the early spring months as they have not seen a city, a grocery store or a hot shower in weeks sometimes. Because of recent movies like Wild, the PCT and thru-hiking has become way more popular in the last few years. In the Green Valley Lake and Big Bear area we have many Trail Angels, local people who live close to towns along the Pacific Crest Trail and help out the hikers when they are in need of a hot shower, laundry services or a hot meal. Many of these folks have spent hours on the trail themselves and many have through hiked the PCT and know just how grueling of a journey it’s thousands of miles are. If you happen to be interested in helping out these hikers or being a trail angel yourself check out the Facebook group Pacific Crest Trail Angels.

FISHING

There are two lakes in the area that boast very good fishing. Green Valley Lake stocks fish on a regular basis during the fishing season, while Arrowbear Lake is open mainly Spring and Summer and dries up most of the time in the fall. It is stocked on a regular basis during the regular fishing season that ends around Labor Day. There are no private boats or float-tubes allowed on the lake. There are rowboats, paddleboats, and kayaks available for rent at the boat house (open 6am-8pm) Price is $15/3hrs. Fishing is $15.00 for adults, an extra $1 for another pole (two is max). $8 for children 4-15. Trout are the main action here. They are stocked regularly by the DFG and private hatcheries. There are also Bass, Catfish, and Crappie in the lake. The lake usually freezes in the winter. No ice fishing is allowed. backcountry, telemarking....common denominator is the heel of boot is free. 4. Use of natural movements, quick learning curve, & not many skills......progress quickly. Low risk of injury. 5. Enjoy the beauty of nature at your own pace & fitness level, with this healthy activity for the body & mind. Outdoor activity to clear your mind, feel the coolness on your face & hear the sounds of nature. 6. This is a multi-generational activity for infants & toddlers (riding in backpacks or sleds) while it can also be gentle for grandparents, too. Some ski centers allow the family dogs, as well. 7. Many great destination resorts all over the world...... with other activities to enjoy. 8. Full body workout .....using upper & lower body more than any other sport, especially for the heart & lungs. 9. Dressing lightly gives you good flexibility, and allows for removing clothing when not needed. 10. Compliments other sports....great off-season sport for those who run, bicycle, & especially triathletes, allowing one to be outdoors even in inclimate weather. Break in the routine of other sports, chance to do something different, at a different pace with different people.

RUNNING SPRINGS AREA PARKS and other facilties

Lakeside-Green Valley Lake’s New Park • Photo by Mike Lee

In Green Valley Lake near the Green Valley Lake Club House sits Lakeside Park and playground. The park was installed and opened during the 2016 summer season. The park came about through a long-term lease agreement with the Green Valley Mutual Water Company for the plot of land and the play equipment was purchased by the Park District. The Park District was pleased about the planning and implementation process. The residence of Green Valley Lake generously provided their input for the type of play equipment they wanted to see and were thrilled about the centralized location and visible public access. Lakeside Park is a great place for children and families to play. The Park District encourages everyone to visit. Arrowbear Park and Tucker Ballfield is a great place to take family and friends who are visiting. The park has been the home to the Mountain Softball Ladies and the annual Arrowbear Lake Lion’s Fishing Derby and Arrowbear’s Fireman’s Fourth of July Pic-

nic for years. The park is a great location for picnics, BBQs, birthday parties, and playground playdates and is exceptional for a game of baseball or softball. Arrowbear residence take great pride in their neighborhood park, which is centrally located upon entering the community and just past the lake. If anyone would like to reserve Tucker Ballfield or the picnic area, please call the Park District Office, (909) 337-7275. In Running Springs near Charles Hoffman Elementary sits the Running Springs Ball Field, Caplinger Soccer Field and the Robert Hootman Senior/Community Center. The Ball Field has been home to many baseball and softball groups on the mountain, such as Mountain Little League, Rim High School, Lake Arrowhead Christian School, Rim Altitude, Men’s Softball, and Women’s Softball. After baseball season is over the back side of the field transforms to Caplinger Soccer where AYSO practices and plays their games during the fall season. The Robert Hootman Senior/ Community Center is home to the Running Springs Area Golden Oaks Seniors and many recreation programs. The community center may also be rented out for parties, weddings, gatherings, and formal meetings. If anyone would like to reserve these facilities or get more information, please call the Park District Office, (909) 337-7275. Also in Running Springs is Firehouse Playground and Picnic area. The park is centrally located near the Running Springs Library on Whispering Pines Drive. The playground area is large with plenty of parking for families to gather. On the other side of the Library is an outdoor Basketball Court and walking distance from the park, on Commercial Way is a community restroom facility.

C. Hoffman Elementary’s Holiday Boutique

“Running Springs Second Little Free Library! It was just last year, that our Running Springs community was gifted a Little Free Library, located at Charles Hoffman Elementary School, by the Arrowbear Lions Club. This fall, the hair salon, “A Cut Above” owned by Susie Heisler, became the second location for choosing a free book. This generous gift was made possible by Olivia Baldwin, a Rim of the World High School student, working on her Girl Scout Gold Award, from Troop 1186. This award is similar in nature and work, to the Boy Scout Eagle Award. Olivia has built several of these mini libraries for the mountain communities. She wanted one to be located in Running Springs, and Susie volunteered the charming patio area in front of her shop as an ideal place to sit in a comfortable chair and choose a book from the case. Since many of the recipients of the books will be elementary students, Hoffman Elementary has agreed to sponsor the library and donated the first tub of books, so the library is well stocked! The premise of the Little Free Libraries is to increase accessibility of books in a community. “Take a book, Leave a book” is their motto. However, a child is always welcome to take a book they enjoy. Shown in the photo is Marlynn Humphries, principal of CHE with Susie Heisler, each perusing an interesting book and hoping families will stop by to encourage their children to read.”

Winter 2016

The Charles Hoffman Holiday Boutique will be held the evening of December 8, 2016, from 5:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. This holiday event celebrates the handmade and child inspired crafts and gifts created right here in our community. Students can explore the career path of an entrepreneur, by conceiving an idea of something that others will purchase, creating the product, pricing the unit to make money, but not overprice, as well as advertising. They also visit a business on the mountain to learn from business owners the joys and pitfalls of those who run their own businesses. The adult artist and crafter community is invited to participate, as a ready audience of holiday shoppers; children and their parents will be in attendance. Contact CHE for information through the PTA, who sponsor the activity with the goal of providing children with experiences that are not only fun, but teach important lessons as well. The staff at CHE recognize the amazing talents of our PTA volunteers! (Photos shown are from Dec 2015).

GREEN VALLEY LAKE

ARROWBEAR LAKE Arrowbear Lake is an unincorporated community in San Bernardino County, California, United States. Its altitude is 6,086 feet, in the San Bernardino Mountains. The community of Arrowbear Lake is located east of Running Springs along off Highway 18 with a population of 736. However, the population has been growing in recent years. The town gets its name from the fact that it lies half way between Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear. It is butted against the National Forest with easy access to many hiking areas along Keller Peak Road. Arrowbear Lake is home to the Arrowbear Music camp that has been in operation since 1942. Every summer the air is filled with evening concerts of budding musicians. This small community enjoys a very private environment due to its off the beaten track location. Annual events include a fishing derby in April, a 4th of July celebration, softball games at Tucker Field and other events throughout the year. If you want a very personal and private stay, look for rentals in this area.

Winter on Green Valley Lake • photo by Sandi Huckaby

The “Hidden Gem” of the San Bernardino Mountains, Green Valley Lake is, at 7000´, a higher resort community than either Lake Arrowhead or Big Bear. This “best kept secret on the mountain” is secluded (nearly four miles away from State Highway 18) and surrounded by National Forest. For all these reasons it has remained small, picturesque, and uncrowded. Green Valley Lake has something going on all the time. For a little town, we sure stay busy. Our town boasts of a pretty little lake that is stocked often with plentiful fish, and a small beach for swimming. We have abundant opportunities for hiking, camping, winter sports, cabin rentals, restaurants, the artisan tour, summer concerts, Pie Festivals and much more. Located only 90 minutes away from Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego Counties, in the San Bernardino Mountains, Green Valley Lake attracts visitors seeking clean air, blue skies, crystal-clear water, and the serenity and calm beauty of a quiet forested communi-

ty. Our two closest neighbors are Arrowbear and Running Springs. There are hiking trails galore and plenty of opportunities for bird watching, mountain biking, horseback riding, and in the winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The nine-acre lake is regularly stocked for fishing, plus there is boating and swimming as well. For the sports enthusiast, Green Valley Lake offers a beach volleyball court next to the lake, plus a basketball court and a tennis court that also can be used for volleyball or badminton. Barbecue facilities are located under the trees in the adjoining picnic area. A magnificent public campground is just down the road with 40 spaces and clean restrooms. The visitor can also choose from a number of cabins for rent. Green Valley Lake has a small downtown area that hosts a market, two restaurants, a post office, a bait and tackle shop, a number of real estate offices, and a community garden. There is also a community church located at 648 Yukon. Further up Green Valley Lake Road you will find the Fire Dept. and a local museum. Green Valley Lake also happens to be a mecca for artists and musicians. Three times a year (Memorial Weekend, Labor Day Weekend, and Thanksgiving Weekend) there is an Artisan Tour in which the local artisans open up their homes or studios and display their many beautiful pieces of handmade artwork. Occasionally, the local musicians get together for a jam. Plus there are eleven outdoor concerts during the summer in the garden across from the lake. For all the many other things to do here, be sure to check out the Schedule of Events.
