Harvest Gathering set for Sept. 14 in downtown Weston By John Clise Editor WESTON — A harvest gathering, full of crafts, activities, games, and food, is set for downtown Weston is set for Sept. 14 from 4 to 8 p.m. Organizers say they event will include face painting, hay wagon rides, food vendors, arts, crafts, dessert contest, hot dog eating contest, pumpkin decorating contest, a duck pool, cornhole tournament, games, pony rides, music by Intent, and much more. The dessert contest will take entries from 4 to 5 p.m. with a focus on pumpkin pies and fall desserts. The hot dog eating contest will take place at 6 p.m. The pumpkin decorating contest will be taking entries from 4 to 6:30 p.m. The cornhole tournament will take place at 4 p.m. Plans are also being made to show a movie sponsored by Lewis County First for the entire family. There will be an awards ceremony at 7:30 to recognize winners in the contests and hand out ribbons to the winners.
There will also be a dunking booth with surprise guest taking their place in the booth. There are currently approximately 30 vendors signed up for the event. Some of those vendors include Bob Taylor selling his birdhouses and other craft items. Hardman Paletti Funeral Home will be giving away a $250 gift card. The Pricetown Food Pantry will be collecting food items for the needy. Sheer Bliss will be collecting coats for the needy. Paint Misbehavin’ will be painting faces. Other vendors will be selling caramel apples, Romney apples, baked goods, decals, jewelry, baby clothes, and Tupperware among others. Main Avenue will be closed from second street to First Street to allow vendors to set up, and allow for a more safe atmosphere for gathering goers. The late D. Jane Gilchrist, formerly of Weston, will be honored with memorial at The West Virginia Storytelling Guild and the Frank and Jane Gabor WV Folklife will honor at Fairmont State University. Gilchrist passed away in March of this year after a sudden illness. FAIRMONT — The West Virginia Storytelling Guild and the Frank and Jane Gabor WV Folklife will honor the life of D. Jane Gilchrist, formerly of Weston, with a memorial storytelling concert featuring tellers from the West Virginia Storytelling Guild on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 2 p.m. at the Folklife Center. Jane Gilchrist was a graduate of Fairmont State University with a B.A. emphasis in folklore studies and a master’s degree in education. Jane worked at the Folklife Center during her time at Fairmont State University and was particularly active in the Center’s library. Upon graduation, Jane worked for AmeriCorps at Arthurdale Heritage in Arthurdale and Heritage Farm Museum and Village in Huntington. She traveled the state teaching weaving and was the owner of Loomyladi Handwoven Studio. Jane passed away after a brief illness on March 8, 2019.
She was also a licensed auctioneer. She enjoyed teaching and sharing her spinning and weaving skills at various festivals in West Virginia and other locales. She liked to travel and was often accompanied by her business partner Bruce Bannerman of Culloden, WV and, on occasion, by her mentor and friend, Julia E. Bragg of Weston. Among her special memories were her trips to Barbados and Eastern Europe. Among her many honors was being featured on West Virginia Public Radio for her life’s accomplishments. The storytelling concert will feature Bill Hairston, Ilene Evans, Mikalene Zuckett, Katie and Otto Ross, Jason Burns, June Riffle, and Jo Ann Dadisman. Dr. Judy Byers will emcee the event. A special presentation and a reception hosted by the West Virginia Storytelling Guild will follow the concert. For information, call 304367-4403.

Bob Taylor, known for his creative and artistic birdhouses, will once again be returning to the 39th Annual Jane Lew Fireman’s Festival Arts and Crafts Show. By John Clise Editor
This is a “juried” arts and crafts show with everything being hand made by the crafters and artisans. Crafters and artisans will offer contemporary and heritage crafters including - glass, wood, leather, jewelry, dolls, dried and silk flowers, baskets, ceramics, soaps, candles, paintings, honey, jams and jellies and much more, according to event officials. Local realtor and artisan Bob Taylor will once again be selling his creative one of a kind birdhouses and other wooden products at the festival. According to Taylor, his creations are made with old barn wood for the most part.

LCHS football kicks off Friday night
Minutemaids score six goals in opening win over Hawks

Looking to build on a 6-4 regular season record from 2018, the Minutemen are looking to gain momentum as they face a number of tough opponents this season. The Minutemen lost in the first round of the playoffs to Fairmont Senior 56-6 giving them an overall season record of 6-5. The Minutemen start their 2019 campaign on the gridiron August 30 at 7 p.m. against the Bridgeport Indians, here in Weston, in a game that always promises to bring out excitement. Lewis County is looking to rebound from a 45-17 season opening loss to the Indians in 2018. Lewis County lost to Fairmont senior for the first time in the season dropping a 53-7 decision in the game. The Minutemen then went on a three game winning streak knocking off Elkins at Elkins 3406. Braxton County at Braxton County 21-12 and Preston at Kingwood 41-7. Lewis County then faced Robert C. Byrd on RCB’s home turf losing a tough one 21-17. The Lewis squad then went on another three game winning streak knocking off Buckhannon-Upshur 14-6 at home, North Marion 23-6 at home and finally Phillip Barbour 10-0 on the Colts’ home field. The minutemen finished the regular season against Liberty at Liberty suffering a 35-14 loss before making it to the playoffs. After their2019 season kickoff against the Indians, the Minutemen will face Braxton County in Week two Elkins in week three, before having week three off, then continuing against Preston in week four, Robert C. Byrd in week five, Buckhannon-Upshur in week six, North Marion in week seven, Fairmont Senior in week eight, East Fairmont in week nine, and finishing out the regular season against Grafton. Certain to be a highlight of the upcoming season is kicker Jared Griffith. The senior has already received serious offers from D-I schools. This year, he has also added the punting duties to his resume. Last year, those duties were handled by Marshall Hobbs. Aside from attending football camps, he has a solid kicking and punting schedule that kept him busy five days a week. Quarterback Nick Kuhn is another player to watch as the season develops.

Olivia Krinov led the way for Lewis County squad with four goals in the game, including three in the first half. By John Clise Editor WESTON — The Lewis County Minutemaids soccer team opened their 2019 campaign with a big 6-2 win over the South Harrison lady hawks here Saturday morning at the Lewis County Athletic complex. Leading the way for the Minutemaids was Olivia Kri-
nov who netted four goals for the game. The freshman hit the back of the net three times in the first half to lead her team to victory on the offense. Krinov scored goals with assists from junior Shyanna James, Sophmore Claire Lattea and James both added goals for
the Lewis offense. They were assisted by Lillian Cayton and sophomore Jaelyn Romans and freshman Lillian Cayton. On defense, the Minutemaids stifled the Lady Hawks at nearly every attempt to score. Senior goal keeper Peyton Campbell had four saves, and back up keeper senior Hannah
Herrod came with two saves. Ember Smith scored both goals for South Harrison in a losing effort. South Harrison briefly tied the contest at 11 in the first half before Lewis County pulled away for good.

Ruby Lee Lowther
Ruby Lee Lowther, 84, of Jane Lew, WV, passed away peacefully into the arms of the Lord on Thursday,Aug. 22, 2019 in Weston, WV. She was born on Sept. 10, 1934 in Clarksburg, WV, a daughter of Lee Junkins and Mildred Oldaker Lowther. Ruby and her loving husband, Virgil Lyndal Lowther shared over 62 years of marriage together. Ruby is survived by her husband; three sons: Lyndal Lowther and wife, JoAnn of Claremore, OK, Russell Lowther and wife, Becky of Warkersville, WV, and Dennis Lowther of Weston, WV; seven grandchildren: Leann Plaxico and husband, Justin, Brandy Randolph and husband, Logan, Jeremy Lowther and wife, Natalie, Christina Blake, Heather Lowther and companion, Chris Farrar, and Amber Lowther, Russell “Rusty” Lowther; sixteen great-grandchildren and one sister Velma Junkins. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Jean. Ruby was a hard worker and
was a valued 34-year employee of Alcon Label Factory. She was a Christian who enjoyed creating beautiful things by crocheting and painting. She loved to sing and you might have heard her making a joyful noise on the radio or WDTV channel 5. Ruby’s request to be cremated has been honored. William Forrest “Bill” Hull William Forrest “Bill” Hull, 76, of Walkersville, WV passed away on Aug. 23, 2019 in Morgantown, WV. He was born in Lewis County, WV on June 7, 1943 to the late William Wellington and Agnes Forrest Curry Hull. Bill and his loving wife Judy Carol Modesitt Hull just celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary. He was a graduate of Walkersville High School and Franklin Institute of Boston, MA. He worked as a machinist at Equitrans for 30 years before his retirement in 1998. From the time he was just a little boy, farming was in Bill’s blood. He was happiest when tending to his farm and family. He enjoyed the challenge of turkey hunting in beautiful Almost Heaven and cheering on Lewis County Minutemen Sports. He was an enthusiastic NASCAR fan both at the track and at home. Bill was a caring and conscientious man who was active in his community. He was a charter member of Ireland Lions Club, a member of Farm Bureau, a board member of Farm Service agency and a member of WV Cattleman’s Association. He practiced his Christian faith at United Methodist Church of Ireland. Those who will miss Bill the most are his two daughters: Michele Simms and husband, Charles of Weston, WV and Spring Lamb and husband,
John A., III of South Haven MS; three grandchildren: Mary Hochgesang and husband, Joseph, Charles William Simms and Rhiannon Lamb; two brothers: Joseph and Boone Hull; one sister Debra Hornick, several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews; his many friends and his two best pals and feline friends Fletcher Ray and Alley Cat. William “Bill” Lawrence Law
William “Bill” Lawrence Law, 68, of Jane Lew, WV departed this life on Sunday, Aug. 25, 2019 under the compassionate care of WVU Medicine Hospice. He was born in Weston, WV on Nov. 17, 1950, the only child of the late Charley Jefferson Law and Ruby Lawrence Law Tichnell. Forever cherishing their memories of Bill are two sons: Jeff Law and wife, Rachel, of Jane Lew and Joe Law of Canyon City, CO; and three grandchildren: Isaac Wright and Mason and McKenna Law. Bill was preceded in death by his mother, father, and step father, Virgil Tichnell. Bill was a 1968 graduate of Lewis County High School. Over the next 50 years he was an employee with Brick Layers & Allied Craftsman Union Local 15. As a side job and hobby, Bill liked assisting with auctions as an auctioneer and often brought some treasures home. He had beautiful collections of glassware and antique marbles.
Edward “Ed” Dale McElwee
Barbara Ellen Wilt Barbara Ellen Wilt, 57, of Lost Creek, WV, passed away on Tuesday, August 20, 2019 in Morgantown, WV. She made her grand entrance into the world on February 20, 1962 in Weston, WV to Linda Sumpter Goldsmith Gump and the late Luther “Bud” Goldsmith and was the only girl in the mess of boys. Barb was a 1980 graduate of South Harrison High School and went on to graduate from West Virginia Junior College. She was lucky enough to find love early in life and at just 22, she married her lasting love, Robert Dale Wilt on May 5, 1984. They shared 35 wonderful years of marriage. Early in life, Barb worked at the Good Hope All-Star Store and Celina Insurance Group but soon realized her one true calling was her family. Barb loved her family fiercely and being with them was her favorite thing. She loved family game night and playing with her grandchildren. But her love of people didn’t stop at just her immediate family; her friends and neighbors were in her heart too. She opened her family pool to everyone in the neighborhood and taught many young folks how to swim. Barb’s talent and goal was to make others laugh by whatever means necessary. If all Barb’s tricks failed, her alter ego, Trixie, would appear in a t-shirt and tutu for an unforgettable performance. She could also be found constantly shopping on-line and sporting her beloved Crocs. Barb will be remembered for being young at heart, charismatic, silly and for leaving far too soon. Those who will miss her most are her mother; husband; daughter, Kayla Baumann and husband, Alan, of Columbia, SC; step-son, Robert Wilt, II and girlfriend, Kristine Kennedy, of Marietta, PA; step-daughter, Tracy Swalm and husband, Jason, of Martinsburg, WV; two
daughters of her heart: Bailee Johnson and Emma Palmer both of Good Hope; grandchild, Carter Baumann; step-grandchildren: Nichole, Thomas and Steven Swalm; five brothers: Darrell Goldsmith and wife, Kathy, of Lost Creek, Rick Goldsmith and wife, Vicky, of Lost Creek. Dave Goldsmith and wife, Donna, of Bridgeport, WV, Tim Goldsmith and wife, Julie, of Miletus, WV, and Gary Goldsmith and husband, Eddie Tomlin, of Richmond, VA; dozens of nieces and nephews; and five feline friends as well as every stray cat in her neighborhood. Barbara has been reunited in Heaven with her father; brother, Tom Goldsmith; stepfather, Frank Gump; and step-grandchild, Autym Wilt. Edward “Ed” Dale McElwee, 84, of Lost Creek passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2019 in the comfort of his home and surrounded by loving family. He was born in Lockney, WV, on Jan. 3, 1935, a son of the late Fred and Edna Rafferty McElwee. On June 10, 1961, Ed married the love of his life, Loretta Grace Smith. Together they shared 58 wonderful years and she will miss him dearly. Ed is survived by his wife, Loretta Grace McElwee; three children: Kevin McElwee and wife, Dana, of Cartersville, GA, David McElwee and wife, Missy, of Albuquerque, NM, and Sonya Turner and husband, Brett, of Good Hope; six grandchildren: Ryan Evan Turner, Brooke Allison Turner, Allyson Grace McElwee, Edward Kase McElwee, Madeline Paige McElwee and Maura Grace McElwee; and many nieces and nephews. Ed was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Hope Duelley and Manoka McElwee; and three brothers: Lyle J. McElwee, Fred McElwee Jr. and Denzil McElwee. After his service in the United States Marine Corps, Ed went to work for Consolidated Gas Company from which he retired after forty years of loyal service. Ed belonged to the First Baptist Church of Weston. He was a caring man who was generous with his time and attention. Many Boy Scouts in Gilmer and Lewis Counties will remember his years of leader. The board is looking at ways through the levy to allow free admittance to sports contests to all students and senior citizens at a cost of approximately $33,000 a year between Lewis County High School and Robert L. Bland Middle School. Currently, the middle school has admittance fees for students, adults and senior citizens, where at the high school admittance is a standard $7 entry fee per person per contest, according to Derico. Free admittance would not apply to playoff games or games with shared revenues. It was noted that almost all fees associated with hosting WVSSAC sanctioned events such as regional competitions go directly back to the WVSSAC. Schools are self-sufficient in paying officials through admittance fees. Monica Weldon, finance director, notes the current incarnation of the levy call is only a proposal. Nothing is written in stone, it is only to help board members better understand what they have to work with and what they have ahead of them. One issue that came up for clarification is the inclusion of the purchase of new buses in the proposed levy, which, after being questioned by Lewis County Board of Education member Mike Holden, Lewis County Schools’ Transportation director Terry Cogar said he felt the levy wouldn’t pass
with those costs included, and he would rather see the levy pass. Holden agreed with his assessment. Several individuals were recognized for their community involvement including Jason Drummond, Dave Gum, Tyler Moyers, Jon Freeland, Christina Mitchell, and Lewis County Board of Education member Phyllis Hinterer by Dominion Energy. Tammy Posey was recognized for her service as president of the West Virginia Schools’ Nutrition Association for the past year. Board members agreed to table discussion and action on the purchase and installation of fuel tanks at the bus garage until further information can be obtained. Board members approved the following requests from Shylia Parker, asking that her middle school child be released from Lewis County Schools to attend Gilmer County Schools for the 2019-20 school year, pending acceptance to Gilmer County Schools. Board members approved a request from Brit Cooper to attend PAX Partner Training, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, in Columbus, Ohio, Sept. 16 and 17. Exceptions to the attendance policy were approved for students listed as K.G. and T.M. The next meeting of the board of education will be Sept. 8 at 6 p.m. at Peterson central elementary School as part of their LSIC meeting schedule.

JANE LEW – Organizers of the 7th Annual Jane Lew Lions Club Safety Fair have declared the event a great success with participation from Lions Club members, vendors and those in attendance this past Saturday at Jane Lew Town Park.
The event included eye screenings, face painting, FBI fingerprinting, temporary tattoos, diabetes finger sticks, a magician, and much more. The Jane Lew Volunteers Department, Mon Health-Stonewall
Jackson Memorial Hospital, Lewis County 4-H, Jane Lew Lions club, Burnsville lake officials and several others were on hand passing out information on their respective organizations. Event goers also had the op-

Much of the wood is rescued from structures that may otherwise be knocked and destroyed. “It’s one of our biggest shows of the year,” Taylor said. The weekend weather is also supposed to be great this weekend with only a 20 percent chance of rain, and temperatures in the mid to lower 80s.
All proceeds go to the Jane Lew Volunteer Fire Department. The current president of the JLVFD is James Oldaker. Be sure to bring the entire family and enjoy the weekend at the show. The folks in charge remind visitors there is no admittance fee to the event.

Courtney graduated from WV Wesleyan in December 2018. After receiving her degree, she substituted in special education at Peterson-Central. Last year she taught first grade at Union Elementary in Upshur County. She is now teaching first grade at PCES. Courtney comes from a family of educators including her mother, brother, and her aunt. “What’s your why?” She replied, “From a young age I saw the importance of education and teachers who care about education, and I knew I had the passion to be a teacher.”

Mackenzie is teaching gym at Peterson-Central Elementary School this year. She graduated from Glenville State College in December 2018 where she played softball for four years. Mackenzie is not the only gym teacher in the family. Her father played baseball at GSC and was also a gym teacher. After graduating, she taught reading intervention at Burnsville Elementary. When I asked her “What’s Your Why?” She said, “I get to do the fun aspect of teaching where it’s not all about testing, but they still learn along the way.”

It will also give us the opportunity interview local officials, residents and others regarding the community. Interesting West Virginia (and before) facts: During the height of the Cold War in 1958, a top-secret project began to construct a bunker 720 feet beneath The Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs. The bunker opened in 1961 and remained on constant alert as a nuclear fallout shelter and emergency relocation facility for the U.S. Congress. After the Washington Post revealed the secret in 1992, the bunker was decommissioned and is now open for public tours. While city dwellers began to receive free mail delivery in 1863, the same was not true for the majority of Americans who lived in rural areas. Farm families needed to travel to distant post offices to retrieve their mail or hire private companies to deliver. When RFD service began in 1896, Postmaster General William Wilson introduced it first to his home state. The first five RFD carriers began service on October 1, 1896, out of post offices in Charles Town, Halltown and Uvilla. Sectional differences brewed inside Virginia for decades before the Civil War. In 1775, a group of 2,000 residents signed a petition asking the Continental Congress to create a 14th colony called Westsylvania, which would have encompassed all of today’s West Virginia along with portions of Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. The Continental Congress ignored the petition along with another plea in 1783 to make Westsylvania the 14th state. (In 1769, land speculators attempted to establish a colony called Vandalia on much of the same footprint as Westsylvania.) In the wake of Virginia’s secession, a convention of delegates from western Virginia met in Wheeling in 1861 for the purpose of forming the “State of Kanawha,” which incorporated 39 counties. The name honored a Native American tribe and a major state river of the same name. When the constitution for the proposed state was finalized in 1862, however, the name had changed to the more generic West Virginia.

Chuck and Pam brought delicious pizza from Fox’s Pizza and Sheri brought an ice-cream cake from Brake’s. Bobbie joined us, too. The celebration is over and not one of us took pictures. What is wrong with us?? Harold Wightman who is a retired pastor brought us a rousing sermon on Sabbath about signs of Jesus’ coming. His scripture was mostly from Matthew 24. Matthew 24:14 could actually be called the GLOBAL WARNING (note: war”n”ing, not war”m”ing). The entire chapter of Matthew 24 is almost entirely the answer to the apostles’ question in verse 3, “When shall these things be? And what shall be the sign of your coming, and of the end of the world?” Number 24 of the 28 Fundamental Beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is CHRIST’S Ministry in the HEAVENLY SANCTUARY In both the Old and New Testaments the sanctuary is presented as the place where God dwells. Sometimes the earthly sanctuary is intended; other times it is the heavenly sanctuary. The psalmist wrote, “ ‘The LORD looked down from his sanctuary on high, from heaven he viewed the earth’ “(Psalm 102:19). And Habakkuk said “ ‘The LORD is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him’ “ (Habakkuk 2:20). The New Testament speaks repeatedly of a temple in heaven. The book of Hebrews refers to it as “the true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by man” (Hebrews 8:2) and as “the greater and more perfect tabernacle” (Hebrews 9:11). Jesus serves in the heavenly sanctuary as our High Priest (Hebrews 8:1, 2). In vision, John the beloved disciple saw an ark, a golden altar, and a censer in the heavenly temple (Revelation 11:19; 8:3-5). He also saw holy beings who serve God in the temple (Revelation 7:15), angels leaving the temple, and smoke filling the temple (Revelation 14:15; 15:5-8; 16:17). In a later scene he heard “a loud voice from the temple” (Revelation 16:1). THE EARTHLY ILLUSTRATES THE HEAVENLY

In order to better understand all that is related to the heavenly sanctuary and Christ’s ministry there as our High Priest, it is helpful to understand the earthly sanctuary that Moses built according to the model that God showed him (Exodus 25:8, 9, 40). The heavenly sanctuary is, of course, superior in every way to the earthly. It is the “greater and more perfect tabernacle” (Hebrews 9:11). In the same way, Christ’s ministry is superior in every way to that of the earthly priests. The book of Hebrews stresses this repeatedly. However, it seems clear enough that the design of both sanctuaries is similar, and the services in the earthly sanctuary can reveal fundamental truths about the heavenly sanctuary. In ancient times the priests carried out their daily work o intercession in the Holy Place throughout the year. Then, on the Day of Atonement, the high priest entered into the Most Holy Place to carry out the last of the annual rituals. In the same way, Jesus entered upon His intercessory ministry as our great High Priest at the time of His ascension. A careful study of Daniel 8 and 9 shows that in 1844 Christ began the final phase of His ministry in the heavenly sanctuary, which corresponds to the earthly Day of Atonement. A celestial being said to Daniel in vision, “Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed” (Daniel 8:14, KJV). Assuming that the 2,300 days began at the same time as the 70 weeks in Daniel 9 (the word decreed in verse 24 suggests that the 70 weeks were to be cut off from the longer period), the beginning point would be “ ‘the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem’” (Daniel 9:25). The date for this decree, which was issued by King Artaxerxes,
took place in 457 B.C. Using the year-day principle to interpret the prophecy, the 2,300 days extended to A.D. 1844. WHAT HAPPENED IN 1844? The Bible doesn’t provide a detailed explanation of the work that was to begin in heaven in 1844, but from an examination of the cleansing of the earthly sanctuary on the Day of Atonement, we know that the purpose of the day was to restore that sanctuary to its original state of cleanliness (compare with Daniel 8:14). In other words, the Day of Atonement was to remove the record of sins that had accumulated during the year s the priest sprinkled the blood of animal sacrifices on the veil. In its original state the sanctuary was clean and free from sin, and on the Day of atonement it was cleansed by removing the record of sins. Using this symbolism of the Day of Atonement, the author of Hebrews declared that just as it was necessary ”for the copies of the heavenly things” (that is, the earthly sanctuary) to be cleansed with the blood of animal sacrifices, so “the heavenly things themselves” must be cleansed “with better sacrifices than these: (Hebrews 9:23). The earthly Day of Atonement was the most solemn day in the earthly sanctuary, because the Jews considered it to be a day of judgment. During this day the people were to abstain from ordinary labor and afflict their souls. Those who refused to do this were cut off from the congregation of Israel (Leviticus 23:27-32). In view of the fact that the work of the earthly priests was a “copy and shadow of what is in heaven” (Hebrews 8:5), it’s reasonable to conclude that before Jesus, the true High Priest completes His work in heaven
on behalf of repentant sinners and comes the second time, He will “cleanse” the heavenly sanctuary, removing the record of His people’s sins from the books in heaven. This work, which implies a separation of His true followers from those who make a mere profession of religion, is sometimes called the “investigative judgment.” The term investigative judgment is not found in the Bible, but all of the elements of such a judgment are in the Bible: the names of the accused, the books of record, the Judge, the Angel assistants, a sentence, etc. (See Exodus 32:32; Daniel 7:9, 10; Philippians 4:3; Revelation 3:5; 20L12, 15; 22:19, 11, 12). This work of judgment must be completed prior to Christ’s return to earth, since when He comes, He will give out rewards (revelation 22:12; compare with Romans 2:5-11). THE FIRST ANGEL’S MESSAGE Given the fact that the “cleansing” of the heavenly sanctuary suggests a work of judgment, and because according to Daniel 8:14 this judgment will begin at the conclusion of the 2,300 days (or years), the message of the first angel of revelation 14 has special significance for us today. This angelic message states in part, “ ‘Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come’ “ (verse 7). It is impossible to exaggerate the seriousness of this time of judgment since, when the heavenly tribunal completes its work, Jesus will return and take to heaven those who “obey God’s commandments and remain faithful to Jesus” (Revelation 14:12). When properly understood, the doctrine of the heavenly sanctuary is a cornerstone of the Christian faith. It exalts the living Christ as our great Attorney and High Priest. It declares that God’s Ten Commandment law is the standard for judging human character. It reveals that our own periodof history is most singular and solemn. It shows that God is both merciful and just in the way He treats His created beings and solves the problem of sin. As a result of the work of judgment carried on in the heavenly sanctuary, every question, doubt, or reservation about God and the way He has treated Satan will be answered, and the redeemed will join in a grand and glorious song; “ ‘Great and marvelous are’your deeds, Lord God Almighty, Just and true are your ways, King of the ages’ “(Revelation 15:3). I could not believe I was still in Randolph county. It was beautiful, welcoming, and a super idyllic spot for a traditional square dance convergence. The local community seemed happy to host. As a participant, I absorbed the stories and culture while becoming friends with some of my favorite old timers. This year Becky enlisted my help, since I now live in Elkins. We thought it would be fun to broaden the scope of the event to feature activities for friends and family in addition to the 24/7 dance and music. The Saturday night dance on August 31 gets underway at 8 p.m. and features the Helvetia Star Band followed by Jesse Milnes, David O’Dell,
Rory Mullenex and Joe Bass. Admission is $10 and FREE to kids 17 and under. These dances are an evening of high-energy family fun; all dances are family friendly and participants don’t need to come with a dance partner. The Sunday evening dance on September 1 features Big Possum Stringband with Tessa Dillon, Evan McBrayer-Collins, and Seth Swingle. “Big Possum won first place at the Appalachian Stringband Festival at Clifftop in 2018 and are returning back to West Virginia from a tour in Australia to play this dance,” stated organizer Hill. This is the fifth time this event has been held in West Virginia and Hill hopes it will continue it for years to come, “Helvetia is the perfect place to hold a workshop weekend. There are two beautiful dance halls, a rich old-time music
and dance tradition, and a supportive community that helps make it happen,” said Hill. Helvetia, settled by Swiss in 1869, is a sweet mountaintop town with a current population of 59. The community is known for maintaining Swiss cultural traditions in their seasonal gatherings such as Fasnacht and monthly dances. Rustic camping for the Hoot is available in a tree lined field alongside the creek between the town’s two dance halls, general store, and Swiss restaurant. Buddy is a playful red and white, short-haired Pointer mix who was brought to the shelter by the Lewis County Animal Control Officer on August 13. He is two years old and weighs 52
pounds. Buddy is super friendly and gets along well with other dogs. He’s already been vaccinated and dewormed, just needs neutered. Maddox is an adorable tricolor Husky mix.
