Bear Flag Fish Co. Newport Beach Owners Thomas and Erika Carson decided to marry a fish market and a sushi bar and opened up Bear Flag Fish Co. in 2007. This restaurant was born for the love of the ocean. Thomas used to work on commercial fishing boats and is a sushi chef (No wonder why he is knowledgeable about fish!) They take pride in their selection of the freshest seafood and are dedicated to provide guests with healthy and delicious seafood cuisine. They currently have two locations in Newport Beach, and are opening their third location in Huntington Beach soon. If you love beer, Mohawk Bend is the place to be. They have incredible 72 beers on tap and they are all California craft beer. Actually, their wine, spirits, even the ingredients used in the dish are also from California. Mohawk Bend offers plenty of vegan menu options as well. Is it a pub? Or is it a vegan restaurant? Co-owners Tony and Amy Yanow who are passionate about craft beer decided to open Tony’s Darts Away 5 years ago. “All Craft. All Draught. All California” explains what this approachable local pub is all about. Their beer list changes daily. They have 38 taps of all California craft beer and they always have at least one of Ballast Point beers such as Grunion, Victory at Sea and Sculpin available.

Continuing from last time, this is a story of a student volunteer from California who traveled to developing countries. 前回に続き、 カリフォルニアから発展途上国に行きボランティア活動を行った学生のお話です。

iroko Murotani was Japanese-American born in and raised in California. From kindergarten through elementary division at Saniku Tozai Gakuen, she learned Japanese and was actively involved in volunteer work, always ready to help the community in any way she can. And in March of this year, she, along with a colleague from the same dentistry department, did volunteer work at a poor mountain village in Sciuani, a three-hour drive from Cusco, a city in the southern part of Peru. From California came 90 high school students, 2 dental students, 3 dentists, 1 doctor, and 4 nurses, making it a total team of 100 people. The high school students helped to build a church while the experienced dental students and physicians helped provide care for the villagers. The funds were raised on their own to do this volunteer work. After staying 1 week, they were able to treat 600 patients. When I heard about the situation from Hiroko, it seemed that the people there did not have access to proper dental care and they seemed to have been waiting for them for a long time. [Some of the patients there had bad teeth so tiny that you could barely see it from the gums. It was a problem trying to get them out, but with continued hard work, we were able to get them out at the very end. That was the success I could remember. On top of this, a patient said to me at the end “Thank you for coming all the way from California to help us! Can I take a picture with you to remember this?”. Hearing this made me surprised me but at the same time made me really happy. I was so glad to have participated in this volunteer work.] Hiroko’s smile was certainly as big as the blue sky of the Andes. My hope for children engaged in educational work is that they become help for people and help in the bringing of peace to people all over. Hiroko’s story has become a light of hope that has truly lit up my own heart.

も積極的に参加して、 どんなときにも人々に奉仕する心を培ってきました。 そして今年の3月、同じ歯学部に通う仲間といっしょにペルー 南部の都市クスコからバスで3時間離れたシクアニという貧し い山村でボランティア活動を行いました。カルフォルニアから集 まった高校生90名、歯科医学生2名、歯科医師3名、医師1名、 看護師4名の計100人がチームとなり、高校生たちは教会建設 のお手伝い、技術を持つ大学生や医師は村人たちに治療を行 いました。活 動 資 金は募 金を募って自分たちで調 達しました。 1週間の滞在で600人の患者さんに治療を行うことができまし た。寛子さんに活動の様子を聞くと、現地の人々はきちんとした歯 の治療を受けることができないのでボランティアチームの来訪を 心待ちにしていたそうです。 「ある患者さんの、歯茎から見えない くらいしか残っていない小さな歯がどんなに引っ張っても抜けな いときはとても困りましたが、苦労して最後の最後に抜けたとき は達成感を覚えました。 さらに活動の最後には患者さんのひとり に 『カリフォルニアからわざわざ自分たちのためにボランティアと して来て助けてくれて、ありがとう！ 記念にいっしょに写真を撮 ってください』 と言われて、本当にびっくりしたのと同時にすごくう れしくなりました。活動に参加してよかった、 と心から思いました」 という彼女の笑顔はアンデスの青い空のように晴れやかでした。 私が教育の仕事に携わってきて子どもたちに願うのは、将来他 の人の役に立ち、人々の心に平和を創るお手伝いができる人に なってくれることです。寛子さんのボランティア活動の話は希望 の光となり、私の心を明るくしてくれました。

Preventing Children’s Cavities Cavities are caused by certain foods (such as sweets) as they multiply the number of bacteria-causing cavities. Reducing the amount of such food eaten helps to prevent cavities. The best way for prevention is through brushing. But learning to brush the correct way is a difficult thing to do. Taking in fluorine helps to make teeth more robust and prevent cavities. Drinking water with fluorine and taking in supplements with fluorine is also quite helpful. This type of prevention is the most effective when the baby teeth come out at the age of 2 until permanent teeth settle in by the ages 11 or 12. Afterwards, it’s very hard to depend on such preventative measures. However, regularly brushing your teeth and reducing the amount of cavity-causing foods, there are children that naturally get cavities. The important thing is to get your teeth checked and prevent those cavities. We look forward to hearing from you.

<1> Take eggs out of the refrigerator, put them in boiling water and boil for 5 to 7 minutes. Once boiled, cool them in ice water bath immediately. <2> Mix KIKKOMAN HON TSUYU and water to make a marinade. <3> Peel hard boiled eggs and leave them in the marinade overnight.
