Within the enigmatic nation of North Korea, children face constant threats to their lives. ベールに包まれた北朝鮮という国の中で、子どもたちは命の危険にさらされていました。
T
his month, I’d like to discuss the reality faced by children in North Korea, based on information gained from the activities of the international NGO I was affiliated with. Twelve years ago, due to failures of agricultural planning, North Korea was plunged into famine. Donations of provisions came in from all over the world, and the Japanese government joined in, sending rice, but distribution favored government officials and soldiers. Consequently, little reached the civilian populace, and many have been forced to the precipice of starving to death in the continuing years hence. The children were no exception, and malnutrition ran rampant. Since North Korea at the time permitted the humanitarian activities of international NGOs, Switzerland, Australia, Germany, and other countries supported the construction of bread factories. These factories worked 24 hours a day to produce 50,000 pieces of bread daily. This bread, in turn, was distributed to 25,000 orphans living in 95 orphanages on the outskirts of Pyongyang, with each orphan receiving 2 pieces of bread a day. Hoping to save the lives of children plagued with malnutrition, the Japanese branches of international NGOs collected donations from Japan to be put towards the cost of bread ingredients. Amongst the supporters from Japan were some who questioned supporting North Korea in any fashion. However, fulfilling the needs of people, regardless of government, race, culture, and religion, is central to the mission of NGOs, so assistance extended to the children of North Korea, as well. It can be said that this “bread of life” saved the lives of these children. However, without rhyme or reason, the North Korean government abruptly banished all international NGOs, and all humanitarian aid came to a halt. Faced with an order to leave, the activities of the North Korean branch of the NGO led by my Swiss friend were forcibly halted, as well. One wonders if henceforth those 25,000 orphans were able to receive any food, or even to survive. A year and a half later, my friend, backed by the Swiss government, joined an investigation of North Korea, and visited the orphanages. “The children in the orphanages had completely disappeared.” There was no sign of any children. If they had been able to grow up, they would have become youths of 15 or 16…

回は、私が携わっていた国際NGOの活動を通して知った 北朝鮮の子どもたちの実情についてお話します。12年前、 北朝鮮は農業政策の失敗で食料不足に陥っていました。世界各 国が食料を支援し日本政府は米を送りましたが、官僚や軍人が優 先的に配給されるため一般市民までは行き届くはずもなく、国民 の多くが餓死寸前にまで追い込まれるという状態が何年も続い ていました。子どもたちも例外ではなく栄養失調が蔓延していま した。当時の北朝鮮は国際NGOの人道支援活動を許可していた ので、スイス、オーストラリア、 ドイツなどが支援してパン工場を建 設し、24時間稼働させて毎日5万個のパンを製造して平壌郊外に 点在する95か所の孤児院に住む25000人の孤児たちに1日2個 ずつのパンを配給しました。国際NGOの日本支部でも、栄養失調 の子どもたちの命を救いたいとの願いから日本で支援金を募り、 パンの材料を購入する費用として送金しました。日本の支援者か らは 「なぜ北朝鮮を支援するのか」 との声が上がりましたが、NGO としては政治、民族、文化、宗教に関わらず、必要とあればどんな 人間であろうとそのニーズを満たすことを人道支援活動の基本と しているので、北朝鮮の子どもたちにも支援物資を送ったのです。 1日2個の”命のパン”で子どもたちの命は救われたと思われまし た。 しかし北朝鮮政府は突然、国際NGOを理由もなく国外追放して すべての人道支援活動が停止してしまったのです。 スイス人である 私の親友が率いるNGOの北朝鮮支部も、退去命令により理不尽に も活動停止になりました。次の日から25000人の孤児たちは何か 食べ物を得られただろうか、 果たして生き延びることができたのだろ うか。 これから教育を受けることを夢見ていたのに…。 そして1年半 後、 スイス政府の後押しで北朝鮮の調査に入った私の親友は、孤児 院を訪れて目を疑いました。 「孤児院の子どもたちが忽然と消えてし まった」。 そこに子どもたちの姿はなかったのです。 もし無事に成長 していたら、15才か16才の若者になっていたはずなのに…。

The Junmai sake [Hanagaki] can be found in the Nanbu Brewery. Having a light and fragrant scent, rice exudes a mellow aroma. Many people are also fascinated the flavor that expands into a deep taste in your mouth. Whether cold, warm, or at room temperature, this sake is always good.
Hanagami Junmai Ginjo Sake Hanagaki Junmai　Ginjo sake is from the same brewery [Nanbu] located in Fukui, Japan. After pouring into the glass, you can enjoy its special round fruity scent evading from the glass. The flavor has a perfect sweetness, but the aftertaste is mildly bitter, giving it an excellent balance in overall flavor.
