Honda unveils 2013 CBR300R in China; Is India a destination too?

T

in the future. The market introduction of this motorcycle in China is yet to be decided. Now there are a number of speculations floating around the CBR250R and its upgrade. Looking at CBR300R does give every Indian motorcycle enthusiast a reason to be excited about.

Coming to India, the Honda CBR250R never really cut the mustard in India. The competition has become very stiff in this segment and the offerings in the market have become impossible to beat. Judging by the image it may be noted that this CBR300R for China has all the bells and MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

300cc. A single-cylinder layout will keep the power level below the Ninja 300, unless Honda decides to go for a parallel twin setup, which is unlikely as it is expensive to build, increase fuel consumption and would increase the price of the motorcycle hugely. But a single cylinder gives better torque spread

across the rev-range, thus, making the bike more usable for every day. Then again it is all a speculation. We hope the experts sitting in Honda have better understanding of the market. But to fight competition they need an ace up their sleeve, and hopefully this is it. NOVEMBER 2013 / 33

he modern age is a funny one. Small hatchbacks are becoming larger and SUVs now come in pint sizes. In the midst is a curious amalgam of compact hatchbacks. Volkswagen wants to start a new trend with the new Cross Polo, which actually lands up somewhere as a mixture of all of these. Let’s be honest here, very few people actually want to do the hardcore off-road bit, and they use specialised vehicles with chunky tyres and 4 wheel drive. The only reason we want small SUVs is that we want to feel adventurous, while driving to the grocery store. EXTERIORS The Polo is a handsome looking car, nearly perfect as a hatchback. The Cross Polo in essence is the same as the Polo. What differentiates it is the plastic cladding at the bottom around the entire car. This does increase the length, breadth and height of the Cross Polo over the regular one by tiny proportions. The nicest thing about this hatch is that it looks distinct on our roads. An appeal similar to this was generated by the long gone Tucson, the rugged SUV from Hyundai. It looks tough and surely will take minor bumps

While the 15 inchers offered in India look very small considering the muscles on this car, it’s got the Johnny Bravo looks and we all love him. INTERIORS We need to come straight at it, no changes here at all. The only new thing here is the

fabric upholstery called Livon. Everything that one finds in the Highline trim of the Polo is here. But then you do get everything that you need---climate control, audio system with four speakers, steering mounted controls, height adjustable driver’s seat and more. The dashboard matches the appeal of the car, strong and tough. Everything fits well and will stand the test of time. The steering wheel, gear knob and the handbrake lever get wrapped in fantastically stitched leather. The outside rear view mirrors can be electrically adjusted from a knob on the driver’s door. ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE No surprises here again. The engine is the same 1.2 litre diesel unit powering the TDI Polo. Since it s a 3-cylinder diesel, it is not very quick or responsive, but it is right there where needed. The International variant’s 1.6 litre unit would have been a scorcher in this car, but so would have MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

been the price. At low speeds the 1.2 litre TDI feels gutless and you need to work the gearbox while driving in traffic. However the performance is very satisfying on open roads or on the highway. The Cross Polo will comfortably return 18km to a litre of diesel. The engine is noisy but the noise isolation levels are pretty good, as you do not get to hear that once inside the car. The Cross Polo wins aces when it comes to handling bad bits of the tarmac. Driving over broken roads does not disturb the composure of the

car. It doesn’t exactly irons out bumps, but rather smashes them down with a steel fist. The Cross Polo is yet again a breath of fresh air. To be honest it will not rack up a lot of sales for Volkswagen, but will be bought by people looking for a change than the regular crowd of hatchbacks. If you look for value for money before personal opinion, the Cross Polo is not for you. This hatch is for people who place individuality and personal taste in the hot seat, and not sheer numbers. ord has been singing praises of their compact SUV EcoSport with their award winning 1.0 EcoBoost petrol engine, and it came out with flying colours in our previous test. Fantastic car, job well done Ford! But it is its diesel brother which is gaining a sizeable chunk of sales. Be in no doubt that the 1.0 EcoBoost is the better car, but due to a

slightly higher price tag and our acceptance of diesel vehicles over petrol versions, the diesel brother wins more favours. We spent a few days with the diesel variant and emerge as happy as we were with the petrol brother. EXTERIORS The EcoSport has powerful presence on the road. The looks

instantly separate it from other sub-10 lakh cars. It looks big and imposing and you tend to take it for a much expensive vehicle than it actually is. The robust side skirts and flared wheel arches lend it a tough appeal. Aggression comes from the trapezoidal front grille and the rakish headlamps. Then are the distinctive alloys and the sharp shoulder line which

lend a sporty appearance. As a complete package the EcoSport is a magnificent piece of design. Ford has successfully captured every detail that one would want in their next car. INTERIORS

Bluetooth connectivity option lets you pair your phone with the car and allows you to make calls comfortably on the move. The Microsoft SYNC application essentially lets you talk to the car and tell it what to do through voice recognition.

Particular praise goes to the climate control system which is incredible in cooling. It chills the cabin faster than cars priced way above this bracket. And then is the music system which is good enough to win praises from music aficionados for its clarity

The best possible words that we would use for the interior would be ‘just right’. Everything that you need in a car is all there, and some. There is sufficient leg room and headroom for generously sized adults. You get a nice commanding view of the road ahead. The instrument cluster is very legible and the trip computer holds ample information. The 46 / NOVEMBER 2013

suspension to give passengers a comfortable ride, isolating every road imperfection. The downside of this combination comes in the form of a bouncy ride on some roads and a steering that lacks feel. But again that is a

very deep observation and most of the customers will not even notice this. However there is just one problem that they will notice that are the weak head lamps. The spread is decent but the illumination is just not up to the mark. At the end of the day a car is what it makes you feel, and you feel amazing in the EcoSport. It looks great, handles well, comes with all the toys imaginable and has a decent engine. Then there is the fuel efficiency, which we reckon will range between 16-18kmpl under everyday driving conditions. In terms of practicality there is ample room in the cabin, plenty of clubby holes to keep things and you get big boot. Glorious Ford, the EcoSport is an ace of spades.

POWER AND PERFORMANCE This 1.5 litre diesel engine is the same that performs duty on the Fiesta, and we all know that is a pretty good unit. Ford has worked a wee bit to squeeze more power out of it, but it is very unlikely anybody will notice. You get nearly 90bhp of power available and a healthy torque figure of 204Nm to play around with. The gearbox is slick and effortless. The 150kmph mark was achieved quiet easily. Under traffic conditions, and believe us Delhi is one of the worst at rush hour, the EcoSport behaved calmly and kept us comfortable. The high driving position gives you a better idea of the cars dimensions. Yes, you might just step in and complain that you cannot see the bonnet, but with a bit of practice it all fits perfectly. The steering is very light and responsive. And that gets coupled with the soft MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

Trade on this route was a significant factor in the development of the civilizations of China, the Indian subcontinent, Persia, Europe and Arabia. Though silk was the major trade item from China, many other goods were traded, and various technologies, religions and philosophies too travelled along the Silk Route. WHEELZ & ROADZ adventurous people from Land Rover to follow this trail in their three Range Rover diesel hybrid prototypes, starting their journey from their home in Solihull in the UK to Mumbai in India. In what is definitely one of the boldest driving adventures ever pursued by Land Rover, the Range Rovers completed the ultimate engineering sign-off test by traversing 13 countries over 53 days and in the process covering around 16,000km. It is the world’s first ever hybrid expedition along the Silk Trail. The long distance had its share of adventure and challenges. The vehicles were put to the test on the water-logged mud tracks of the Kalmykiya grasslands in eastern Russia, so sticky that they were impassable to other vehicles. Similarly while crossing the Fergana mountain range (in Central Asia spread across eastern Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan) the

vehicles tackled narrow and rutted mud tracks in darkness. It was only 12 miles to the clearing on top of a hill where tents were pitched for the night, but covering that short distance took several hours. Following heavy rains, the steeply-inclined roads were so wet and muddy that even the most capable hybrid four-wheel-drive vehicles in the world had to fight their way forward yard-by-yard. One day the convoy drove into icy winds above the snowline at 5,875 feet (1,760 metres), 50 / NOVEMBER 2013

looking down on a cloud-layer and soaring eagles. Next day the road climbed higher still, to 11,000 feet (3,350 metres), reaching a vast meadowland plateau. Two days later the expedition took rocky cattle trails to an altitude of 13,035 feet (3,973 metres), where the team’s medical expert checked each individual’s heart rate and bloodoxygen saturation levels, in anticipation of possible altitude sickness when the convoy later crossed the Himalayas. The convoy also crossed a deep MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

river ravine on the Friendship Bridge connecting the town of Zhangmu in China with the village of Kodari in Nepal. Oneby-one the Range Rover Hybrids were given permission to drive slowly across the bridge with the passengers required to follow them over on foot. Nepal’s Kathmandu roads were so severely potholed, that the Range Rover again had to draw on its reserves of acceleration and its class leading (590mm) wheel articulation to ride smoothly over the bumps. The Silk Trail 2013 expedition was the final validation test for the Range Rover Hybrid before it is signed-off for production. From its home in Solihull, UK, it blazed a trail through France, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China (including Tibet), Nepal and India. For much of this distance the expedition followed the MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

legendary Silk Road trading routes that first connected Asia with Europe more than 2,500 years ago. Overnight halts were made in hotels, hostels and tents at many of the same staging posts visited all those years ago by Silk Road merchants, missionaries and mercenaries. Where the north and south

Silk Roads split, near the remote city of Kashgar in north-western China, the expedition pioneered a mountainous route never previously completed by a vehicle from outside the country and never previously seen in its entirety by any westerner – the Xinjiang-Tibet highway, which put the new Range Rover Hybrid

through its paces at heights of over 5,300 metres above sea level. Seven consecutive days were spent at altitudes between 11,000 and 17,648. At such great heights, oxygen content in the air is reduced from the 21pc found at sea-level to as little as 10pc, making movement more difficult for humans and internal combustion engines. The Range Rover convoy continued to make good progress, benefitting from the electric motor’s instant torque at 0 rpm and despite being laden with heavy loads including luggage, camping gear, food, medical equipment, and aerodynamically-unfriendly roof-racks carrying spare wheels, tyres and jerry cans of fuel.

Negotiating tracks so sticky with mud that they were impassable to other types of vehicle, the Range Rover’s hybrid engine combination – with a 35kW electric motor supporting the TDV6 3.0 litre turbo-diesel engine – returned excellent fuel consumption for a vehicle

so spacious and powerful. Throughout the epic journey the Range Rover Hybrids typically returned 36 to 37 mpg. Land Rover development engineers closely monitored data loggers fitted to each car, sending back more than 300 gigabytes of detailed technical

The purpose of the expedition was not to test the reliability of mechanical components, which are already proven, but to finetune the calibration of engine and transmission software to ensure perfectly seamless performance in all terrains and extreme temperatures and MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

altitudes. Technical setbacks reflected the roughness of the road surfaces: 15 punctures among the expedition’s three Range Rover Hybrids and four support vehicles, four wheels damaged by deep potholes, and four windscreens cracked by stones thrown-up on loose surfaces. Peter Richings, Jaguar Land

Rover Hybrids and Electrification Director who took part in the final leg from Jaipur to Mumbai commented: “The world’s first diesel hybrid expedition along the Silk Trail pioneered an ambitious route across Europe and Asia that would have been impassable to most other types of vehicle – but no matter how hostile the conditions, the Range Rover Hybrid prototypes took it all in their stride. “In developing the hybridpowered Range Rover, our objective was to gain hybrid’s fuel economy and carbon emissions advantages without compromising the Range Rover’s go-anywhere capabilities, its cabin space or its refinement. The success of this remarkable expedition clearly demonstrates we have achieved that.” NOVEMBER 2013 / 53

Suzuki Raid De Himalaya rally, one thing is clear, it’s a task cut out for the bold and spirited and not for the faint hearted. The Maruti Suzuki Raid de Himalaya is considered one of the top ten toughest motorsport events of the world. This year it turned 15 when it was organised from October 4 to 12, 2013. If age is a deterrent for such rallies, then Helmut Frauwallner, a 55 years old Austrian biker would not have won the competition in his category. Frauwallner’s Yamaha WR 450 led the rally throughout the entire six legs. Frauwallner was crowned champion in the Xtreme (Motorcycles and Quads) with a cumulative timing of 9.09.54 Hrs. Interestingly, Frauwallner turned 55 years old the day he received his Raid trophy. Frauwallner, an Austrian, is a Dakar finisher. He had an overall timing of 9.46.23 Hrs over 6 days. Sanjay Agarwal/Shiv Prakash driving a Grand Vitara XL7 finished as first runner up with cumulative timing of 10.10.35 Hrs. Harpreet Bawa/Parminder Thakur were second runner up having clocked 10.11.23 Hrs. Jagmeet Gill/Chandan Sen of Team Maruti driving a Maruti Suzuki Gypsy lifted the trophy in Raid Adventure (4-Wheeler) category with an overall penalty of 0.03.46 Hrs. Subir Roy/Md.

The Maruti Suzuki Raid De Himalaya raced on the highest motorable roads in the world this year. In a fitting tribute to its 15th edition, champion rallyists at Raid 2013 were able to conquer Khardung La and Wari La, two of the highest mountain passes in the world. These passes are marked by such heavy snowfall and blizzards that they have refused to yield way to motorsport enthusiasts from the country and abroad. MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

On the penultimate day of the Raid this year, the Raiders raced to Khardung La, at an elevation of 5,602 meters (18,379 feet), and the Wari La, at an elevation of 5,250 meters (17,300 feet) above sea level in Ladakh. The highest altitude that the Dakar Rally touches is approximately 3,000 feet on a competitive stage. The Raid, India’s iconic motorsport event, culminated in Leh after running over 1,800 kilometres over six days over the highest motorable passes, inhospitable terrain and sub zero temperatures.
