Aston Martin introduces new DBS Superleggera D

6 | MOTOWN INDIA | JULY 2018

BS Superleggera. A true thoroughbred that marks the return of not one, but two illustrious names. With DBS, Aston Martin is reviving an iconic nameplate that first appeared on in 1967, while Touring’s famous mark – Superleggera – will once again adorn the bonnet of an Aston Martin. A collaboration that originally paved the way to the DB4, 5 and 6 Mark 1, DBS Superleggera pays homage to the historic super lightweight construction technology of the famous Italian coachbuilder.

As the British marque’s magnificent new Super GT flagship, DBS Superleggera replaces the esteemed Vanquish S. That’s a tough act to follow, but one it was born to do. Evolving innovative aerodynamic concepts first seen on the DB11 such as the curlicue and Aeroblade - and then taking things further with an F1-inspired doublediffuser, DBS Superleggera generates 180kg of downforce at VMAX: the highest figure ever for a series production Aston Martin. This significant increase comes with no additional drag penalty.

In the new DBS Superleggera, Aston Martin has a Super GT that’s a breed apart. One that takes the fight to the world’s best on its own terms. Clad using immaculately sculpted carbon fibre body panels this latest model is blessed with muscular, highly individual styling.

The heart of DBS Superleggera is Aston Martin’s 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 engine. Set low and as far back in the chassis as possible to optimise the centre-of-gravity and weight distribution, this high-performance engine develops 715hp at 6500rpm and 900Nm from 1800-5000rpm. The car accelerates from 0 to 100kmph in 3.4 seconds.

generous level of standard equipment, including keyless entry, tyre pressure monitoring system and a 360-degree camera with Parking Distance Display and Park Assist. The audio system has DAB plus Bluetooth audio and phone streaming, iPod, iPhone and USB playback. There is also an integrated satellite navigation system and Wi-Fi hub. All the in-car infotainment systems use a central LCD screen, controlled via a central dial. Detailed tuning of the V12 together with a new exhaust strategy with active valves and quad tail pipes ensures DBS Superleggera has a commanding and powerful sound character, particularly in the more aggressive dynamic modes, while retaining a level of refinement and civility that compliments its role as the consummate Super GT. Both the powertrain and chassis have a choice of three dynamic modes – GT, Sport and Sport Plus - which can be selected by the driver to intensify or relax DBS Superleggera’s responses according to the needs of the driver.

8 | MOTOWN INDIA | JULY 2018

DBS Superleggera deploys its prodigious power and torque to the rear wheels via a new rearmounted ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. Featuring a mechanical limited-slip differential and torque vectoring for precise, predictable and exploitable handling and a lower final drive for explosive in-gear acceleration, DBS Superleggera combines the responses of a supercar with the refinement of a GT, with the capability of a maximum speed of 340kmph. DBS Superleggera features a

Supple, aromatic leather and Alcantara upholstery comes as standard, as do the Sports Plus performance seats and steering wheel. There is a choice of two alloy wheel designs: the standard ‘Y’ Spoke Forged Wheel and the Lightweight Twin Spoke Forged wheel. Both are 21” in diameter and fitted with Pirelli tyres developed specifically for DBS Superleggera. Deliveries of DBS Superleggera are scheduled to begin globally in Q3 2018.

McLaren 600LT, the next chapter in the McLaren ‘Longtail’ story

T

he McLaren 600LT marks the beginning of the next chapter in the McLaren ‘Longtail’ (LT) story and at the same time sets a new sportscar benchmark as the fastest, most powerful and most track-focused – yet road legal – Sports Series McLaren has created. Available to order now from McLaren retailers – subject to availability – the McLaren 600LT Coupé is priced from £185,500 with taxes (UK) (Rs 1.67 crore approx.). The McLaren 600LT is only the fourth ‘Longtail’ McLaren in more than two decades. The new addition to the LT family has all the

physical hallmarks of a true McLaren ‘Longtail’, including a silhouette elongated by 74mm; it also has an extended front splitter, lengthened rear diffuser and fixed rear wing. In total, more than 23% of parts (by number) are different on a standard McLaren 600LT compared to a McLaren 570S Coupé. The minimalist, track-focused interior has Carbon Fibre Racing Seats first seen on the McLaren P1, and lightweight Alcantara trim material features extensively. Super-Lightweight carbon fibre seats developed for the McLaren Senna are available in lieu of the standard seats if customers are looking for further weight savings, McLaren Special Operations (MSO) offers a range of features that includes a carbon fibre roof and cantrails and vented carbon fibre front fenders. With every lightweight option fitted, the lightest dry weight of the new McLaren 600LT is as low as 1,247kg.

To deliver the extreme performance appropriate for an LT, the McLaren 600LT is powered by a twin-turbocharged, 3.8-litre V8 engine that benefits from an updated cooling system and reduced back pressure in an exhaust system that is even shorter and more extreme than that of the McLaren Senna. Peak power is 592bhp, with maximum torque of 620Nm and the power-to-weight ratio of the McLaren 600LT at lightest dry weight is an astonishing 481PS/tonne.

Production of the 600LT CoupĂŠ will begin in October 2018 and last for around 12 months, with build slots scheduled around existing Sports and Super Series models, as well as the sell-out Senna, Senna GTR and BP23. The specialist carbon fibre body panels of the 600LT will also ensure that it is significantly rarer than its Sports Series brethren.

The new model features the forged aluminium double-wishbone suspension and lightweight braking system from the second-generation McLaren Super Series, bespoke, track-focused Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tyres, quicker steering, sharpened responses from the throttle and brake pedals, significantly firmer engine mounts and exhausts that are mounted virtually behind the driver’s shoulder to bring the incredible sound of the powertrain into the cabin. Audi Q8 to see Europe launch in 3rd quarter of 2018

The Audi Q8 is 4.99 meters long, 2.00 meters wide and 1.71 metres tall. This new Audi Q8 SUV coupe is wider, shorter and lower than its Q7 sister model. All drive systems are particularly efficient thanks to the new mild hybrid technology (MHEV). The 48-volt primary electrical system incorporates two important technology modules: a lithium-ion battery and a belt alternator starter. During braking, it can recover up to 12 kW of power and feed it back into the battery. The MHEV technology enables long coasting phases with the engine deactivated and a start-stop range that begins at 22 km/h. The spoiler, wheel arch trims, door trim strips and diffuser are in a contrasting color, to further

As in the original Audi quattro, a black surface underlays this strip. Q8 owners can use the myAudi app on their smartphone to activate various lighting functions and experience them from the outside. The purely mechanical centre differential transfers the forces to the front axle and rear axle at a ratio of 40:60 as standard. his is the third generation BMW X3 and the company has for the first time introduced a “Luxury Line” variant in the BMW SAV line-up. We were only too keen to find out whether this Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) had become savvier.

EXTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES The new BMW X3 Luxury line is a smarter version of the earlier generation X3. Apart from the fact that it has an intelligent allwheel drive system, its intelligent lightweight construction ensures that the car is 55 kilograms lighter as compared to the predecessor. On the looks front, it has a very sporty appearance. Since it’s an SUV, though BMW calls it’s a Sports Activity Vehicle, it’s been made to look aggressive. There is a lot of chrome all around, be it the slats of the kidney grilles, the chrome plated front, and the tips of the tail pipe. Not to miss are the air flap control with thin chrome trims. Then there are these decorative mouldings in the sill cladding and door sill finishers with ‘BMW Luxury Line’ designation. LED lighting is plenty too with accent lighting with turn indicators, low and high-beam in LED Technology, hexagonally shaped DRLs and two-

part LED tail lights. The exterior mirrors are electrically foldable, with automatic anti-dazzle function. Rain sensors, automatic driving lights, welcome light carpet which is very pronounced at night, automatic operation of tail gate for opening and closing, panorama glass roof, roof rails and a low slung roof spoiler make up the external features of the car. The car sits on 19 inches light alloy double-spoke style wheels. The tyres are run flat but with reinforced side walls. These are 245/50 R19.

INTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES Now once you get into the driver’s seat and start looking around, you notice a lot of features borrowed from the BMW top end sedans for the X3 Luxury Line. There are 3 climate zones here, one for those seated at the back and two for the driver and co-passenger in front. The rear back seats are foldable and are split 40:20:40. It can be lowered with the press of button in the boot area or can even be pulled down from the rear seat area too. The rear seat windows have roller sunblind which can be operated mechanically. The rear seat back rest can be adjusted by around 9 degrees. The luggage compartment has a capacity of 550

Unlike a BMW sedan, this Sports Activity Vehicle is meant for a bit of rough so I took it on a path less travelled. Here a vehicle is not about speed, but about the way it handles the rough. litres extendable to 1,600 litres thanks to rear split seats.Ambient lighting with six dimmable light designs set your mood for a perfect outing. The two seats in front get electrical adjustment with memory function. Like an upmarket five series and seven series sedan, this SAV too gets loads of luxury. The X3 comes with two sets of key, one a display key the other a normal one. The display key, however, does not have the function to move your car by remote from outside, like it does in the BMW 5-series and 7-series. But those buying the Luxury Line get the BMW Connected iDrive. Again,

the rectangular screen and the large knob on the centre console help you navigate through a lot of functions, whether it is your Driver Profile settings, Vehicle settings, Audio selection or your navigation. Wherever, one has the function to type in letters there one can write too. The writing can be done with your finger and though it may look and feel a bit juvenile, it’s a function no doubt. That’s the iDrive Touch with handwriting recognition. It’s as if to cock a snook at the competitors, telling them that here I have a function that you guys do not have! Innovations are

pouring in from car makers by bucket loads! Then there’s Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth with audio streaming, handsfree and USB connectivity. There is also a rearview camera, park distance control, front and rear, parking assistant, camera and ultrasound-based parking assistance system, a 600W Harman Kardon Surround Sound system (16 loudspeakers) , a DVD drive and integrated 20GB hard drive for maps and audio files, wireless Charging, etc.

#BMWX3LUXURYLINE

The smartphone holder integrated into the centre console allows inductive, wireless charging for mobile phones and the BMW Display key. There is plenty of storage space for your small items. There is one folding compartment below the driver’s side, power socket in the rear centre console (12V) including USB adapter and storage nets behind the front seat backrests. Since it’s an X3, the smartly embossed X logo in chrome is located on the doors and the centre console. The cabin is well insulated and it’s very unlikely you can make out you are driving a diesel car. The grunt from the diesel engine is not at all audible within the cabin. The Luxury Line model comes with leather upholstery in Vernasca while the dash area issensatec-covered with contrast stitching and fine-wood trim.

SAFETY AND PERFORMANCE Unlike a BMW sedan, this Sports Activity Vehicle is meant for a bit of rough so I took it on a path less

travelled. Here a vehicle is not about speed, but about the way it handles the rough. And I was very impressed by the vehicle’s suspension which ensured that a lot of rough was not passed into the cabin. Adaptive suspensions, electronically controlled Automatic Differential Brakes and locks and Dynamic Traction control all come into play to make my drive through rough land a treat of sorts. The vehicle also has features like Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control. It is the BMW xDrive, an intelligent all -wheel-drive system, in this all-new BMW X3 which gets to work by distributing the engine’s power between the front and rear axle perfectly to suit the driving needs. Once you are on city roads, the X3 becomes a well behaved lad. The two-litre four-cylinder diesel engine of BMW X3 xDrive 20d produces an output of 190 hp and a maximum torque of 400 Nm at 1750 – 2500 rpm. The car accelerates from 0-100 km hr in just 8 seconds. The eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission performs seamlessly

www.motownindia.com | www.micorporate.com

with power delivery perfectly matched with your driving modes. The steering wheel paddle shifters allow you to explore speedier drives. The driver can choose between different driving modes like Ecopro, Comfort and Sport to suit different driving conditions. There is also an Adaptive mode too which I presume once chosen automatically engages the Comfort and Sport mode, as the need arises while driving. The all-new BMW X3 comes with six airbags, Dynamic Stability Control including Cornering Brake Control, electric parking brake with auto hold, side-impact protection, electronic vehicle immobilizer and crash sensor, among others. There are also ISOFIX child seat mounts in the rear seat area.

VERDICT The new BMW X3 Luxury Line is definitely a technologically superior car compared to its predecessor and it offers loads of comfort, safety and practical features. All in all, this SAV is definitely a lot savvier than I imagined.

hen it was launched in 2015, the Hyundai Creta ushered in a new era in the then growing compact SUV segment. It was a massive success for the company and offered premium looks and interiors. The looks were aided by a set of motors that delivered beyond expectation. Since then the C-SUV segment has come a long way and it was time for Creta to re-enter the arena in a

new and improved avatar.

EXTERIOR DESIGN AND STYLING The original Creta was a massive and bold looking SUV with impressive design cues. Now with the facelift, Hyundai has just got better with the Creta. You will notice the bulk of changes on the front of the car which has Hyundai’s new cascade grille. The new grille houses slimmer slats and gets chrome on the edges giving it a cleaner and smarter look. The

LED DRLs have been shifted from the headlamp cluster and now border the fog lamps below. The new design for the DRLs is much appreciated and lends the Creta a distinctive look. The 17-inch wheels get treated with newly designed diamond cut alloys that look smarter and sharper when compared to the outgoing model. The silver skid plates on both the front and the rear have been beefed up as well. Apart from this, not much has changed on the side and

rear. Hyundai is also offering the new Creta with a dual tone and two new colour options. We had the new orange colour which seems to be in vogue but I like the blue colour better. The subtle changes made on the exterior do affect the car in a positive manner and it is one of the best looking compact SUVs in the market still. However, Hyundai missed out on using LED units for the headlamp and/or the tail lamp. The LED lights would really have

been a welcome addition.

INTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES The interiors of the new Hyundai Creta have received some additions. You get a functional touchscreen infotainment system complete with navigation and smartphone connectivity via Android Auto and Apple Car Play. While the touch response itself is not the smoothest, it does get the job done. New additions include 6-way power adjustable driver seat, wireless charging pad and electrically operated sunroof. The new Creta also gets a smartwatch that acts as a key for the car and the smartwatch can also track

your health metrics such as steps taken, distance covered on foot, calories burnt and more through an app that you can download on your phone. The seats are comfortable and give you enough cushioning no matter which one you choose and you can also get them in a dual tone shade. There is enough space for the occupants and the 2nd row passengers get dedicated

AC vents. The Creta comes with dual airbags as standard and you get 6 airbags in the top spec variant. Interestingly, the automatic transmission option is not available in the top end model. So should you opt for the automatic variant, you will miss out on the sunroof, wireless charging, smart watch and more importantly the 6 airbags.

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE The new Creta is available in three engine options including a 1.4L diesel, a 1.6L diesel and 1.6L petrol. The 1.6L engines come mated to a 6-speed manual or automatic

means that the Creta behaves nicely when you are travelling at 40-50kmph but sprints gracefully when let loose on highways. This is a driver’s car and handles nicely thanks to the suspension tuning and the steering wheel which allows for accurate input all the while being not too heavy. You get disc brakes on the front wheel and features like ABS, EBD and ESC are standard but there are times that you do wish that a pair of disc brakes on the rear wheels would have made the

braking perfect.

VERDICT If you loved the original Creta then this won’t disappoint you either. However things are not as simple as they were 3 years ago. In my closing words I would say that if you want a premium compact SUV that keeps your budget in and around the Rs 15 lakh mark, then the Creta is still a great choice.

MARUTI SUZUKI VITARABREZZA AGS

COMING OF AGS M Report: Aakash S. Paul ; Photography: Afsar Baig aruti Suzuki has been at the forefront of bringing the twopedal technology to the common man ever since they launched the Celerio back in 2014. They carried the practice by introducing Auto Gear Shift (AGS), Maruti’s AMT technology, in the Alto K10 later on. So it was only natural for the company to introduce this feature in their highly popular compact SUV, the Vitara Brezza.

you can also get in the manual variant. The car still sports a boxy design and the dimensions remain the same. The dual tone scheme has also been carried forward. However, this one gets a white roof in place of a black one. I did not have any complaint with the white colour but I still do prefer the black more. TheVitara Brezza now comes with 16-inch alloys in a glossy black finish. While the chrome slat on the front and on the boot lid are nothing new, they have become standard now.

EXTERIOR DESIGN AND STYLING

The manual gear lever has been replaced by an automatic one and a closer inspection reveals the lack of cruise control, which can be found on the manual transmission variant. This has obviously been done to bring down the cost. While I personally have no major problem with that, a lot of people would have preferred to have the feature on the AMT variant as well. A smart move that Maruti has made is that they have made dual airbags, seat belts with pre-tensioners and force limiters, ISOFIX mounts and rear parking sensors standard. These features make the entry level variants more value for money and also add some much-needed safety measures.

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE The AGS variant of Brezza gets the same DDiS 200 diesel engine but it now comes paired to a 5-speed AMT. Not having to worry about clutching and shifting gears is always

34 | MOTOWN INDIA | JULY 2018

a plus when you are driving through the city. The AGS on the Brezza has been tweaked and tuned to suit the car and it does indeed manage to provide a smooth and calm drive. However, should you decide to step on the accelerator, you will realise that the lack of power below 2000rpm still exists and the car thinks for a moment, downshifts and then surges forward. Cross that rpm range and the Brezza comes into its element and you get enough power. So while low speed overtaking might not be as fun on the Brezza, high speed overtaking will not be a problem. You can still shift the car manually using the gear stick to get a slightly quicker response. Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) have now become standard and they provide reassurance when you have to apply brakes suddenly. The front disc and rear drum brakes provide enough power to bring a car of this size to a halt.

VERDICT The Vitara Brezza was already a great product and with the ease of an automatic transmission it has only become better. This could be a great medium to travel to and from office and through the thick of traffic, that we have become so accustomed to

www.motownindia.com | www.micorporate.com

seeing. Where the Brezza AGS might shine would be in the VDi and ZDi models thanks to their lower price and Maruti Suzuki making many sensible features standard. The top end ZDi+ and ZDi+ Dual Tone variants come dangerously close to the price of Tata Nexon diesel AMT, which offers a bigger engine and a few more features.

Adding a few more features in the top end variants would have provided the Brezza more firepower against competition. However, if you would like an automatic compact SUV that does not tax on your pocket when you buy the car and after, then the starting two variants will make a fine pick.

Speedmaster and assume that this motorcycle is some track bike. It’s a classic motorcycle and that too a very modern one with great cruising abilities. Let me describe its looks to you. It’s a good solid bike to look at, like a hard tail one and it does not have those modern outlandish looks. It looks every bit muscular and stylish with a lot of chrome thrown in to make it look attractive. The cranberry red coloured fuel tank, the black

body and the chrome painted multi-spoke wheels with the twin chromed exhausts give the bike a very smart look. The low slung bike with its curved seat, the chrome grab rails for the pillion and the not so high pillion seat add to the rock solid appearance of the motorcycle. I was particularly happy to see the pillion seat positioned so decently, unlike so many of the silly new gen bikes

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE Now how does it feel to ride the motorcycle? The

all-new Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster has a smart roar when you start it. The sound from the liquid cooled 8 valve 1200cc paralle twin engine is noteworthy. It produces a peak output of 76hp@6100rpm and a peak torque of 106Nm@4000 rpm. The torque high chain driven engine is mated to a six speed transmission. The moment you slide it into the first gear, you can feel the

Gear changes are so smooth and coming back to the neutral gear is so easy. The ride by wire technology enhances throttle response. There you go modernity at its best all draped in classic style. The motorcycle stands on 32 spoke wheels with R16 tyres. The suspension soaks in a lot of shocks that are thrown in by bad roads. You have KYB 41 mm forks with cartridge damping with a 90mm travel for the front and KYB monoshock with linkage and stepped preload adjuster. This has a 73.3 mm rear wheel travel. Brakes too are very dependable, with twin 310 mm disc with Brembo 2-piston floating calipers while the rear one is a single 255 mm disc with Nissin single piston floating caliper. ABS is there as standard. What I really found very disturbing in the bike was the very low ground clearance which I am guess is less than

bars, adjustable touring screen and single seat option, etc.

VERDICT

The bike behaved very well when it took the corners though I would recommend a rider not to lean too enthusiastically because the foot pegs may jolt you out of your leaning posture. Moreover, I never recommend steep cornering on Indian roads because of the surprises that lie ahead of every rider like broken roads, rubble and erratic traffic. But if you do find a sweet spot to corner, do so and get yourself a new high. And when you hit the sweet highway to nowhere, you can definitely enjoy the function of the single button cruise control. You can also opt for the two riding modes one for road and one for rain.

The all-new Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster is a great bike for riding in the city and when it comes to highways, it gets into its natural self. Don’t get me wrong when I say this motorcycle is ideal for all those bikers out there who buy Royal Enfield motorcycles. I know there is a huge gap when it comes to the price tag between an RE bike and a Triumph, but it’s meant for those kind of riders who like a modern bike with very classic genes. It’s an investment that no RE kind of guy will ever regret. This bike brings so much grace in riding that you may actually begin to fall in love with our roads, whatever its worth today in our country.

PROS & CONS

TVS APACHE RTR 160 4V Report: Motown India Bureau

Not too long ago we got the opportunity to ride the new TVS Apache RTR 160 4v on the company’s track in Hosur. I was quite impressed with the refinement of the 160cc single cylinder motor and the updated looks were charming, even if borrowed. Now having spent more time with the carbureted version of the bike in the city we decided to compile a list of things we liked and things we did not.

THINGS WE LIKED!

1) IMPROVED LOOKS It is no secret that the design on the new 160 4v takes inspiration from its elder sibling, the Apache RTR 200 4v and it is not entirely a bad thing. The Apache now has a more raw appeal to it and looks much more imposing than before. The elongated muscular tank is prominent but not too wide to be intrusive in your riding. Then you have the headlamp cluster which while still lacking full-LED lamps, does look better than the one it replaces. The silver plastic area on the sides is the only questionable choice but apart from that all is great.

2) PEPPY ENGINE The strongest selling point for the bike would be the engine and its peppy nature. It truly shines with class leading numbers of 16.2hp power and 14.8Nm of torque. You feel the bike’s potent nature as soon as you get on the road. It is eager to lunge in the direction you point it and can almost become hard to control when you are stuck in traffic. Long highway rides will be no problem as the bike can go way above 100kmph, should you push it.

3) FEATURE LOADED METER CONSOLE The all-digital instrument panel on the Apache is packed with stats like your

40 | MOTOWN INDIA | JULY 2018

speed, distance covered, two trip meters, fuel level, rpm gauge and even a lap timer. You can record your top speed and even your 0-60kmph timing. The display size is big so everything is easily readable. There is a gear shift indicator on the top right of the meter console and if you opt for the FI variant then the console also displays the gear you are in. Altogether, the Apache 160 4v comes with a feature packed instrument panel.

4) TURN INDICATOR SWITCH AND HORN The switchgear on the Apache 160 4v has been placed neatly and the switches get a nice glossy finish. But it was the turn indicator switch that stood out to me for the simple reason of how easy it was to flick it. The turn indicator is something that we use regularly (at least the law abiding and responsible riders do) and as such a stiff switch can be a niggle. Another standout feature on the handlebar is the horn which has a prominent sound which can be helpful in some cases where you need to make your presence felt.

5) GRIPPY TYRES The Apache comes studded with excellent 17-inch tubeless tyres consisting of a 90/90 at the front and a wide 130/70 at the rear. Riding the bike on wet tarmac after it had drizzled was not a worry at all.

You get plenty of grip and can easily hug the corners as we did back when we rode it on the track.

SCAN TO VIEW THE VIDEO*

6) VERSATILE SUSPENSION One of our prime concerns about the bike was the suspension setup. On the track it felt apt and inspired a lot of confidence. Riding on the city streets made us realise that the suspension actually handled uneven surfaces and cracks in the road quite well. In fact the suspension setup excelled our expectation and even the pillion enjoys decent amount of comfort.

7) EXHAUST NOTE The Apache RTR 160 4v has been equipped with a shotgun exhaust that mouths a low and throaty roar. Enthusiasts who like their bikes to sound the part would appreciate the exhaust note and it also negates the need of spending extra cash on an aftermarket solution.

8) COMPETITIVE PRICING Seeing how feature rich this motorcycle is, the price tag is quite well thought. At Rs 84,490 (ex-showroom Delhi) the bike gives stiff competition to others in terms of features and price. Even the FI variant is not out of reach at just Rs 90,490 (Exshowroom Delhi).

#TVSAPACHERTR1604V

THINGS WE DISLIKED!

1) ENGINE HEAT While the engine is quite powerful and fun to play around with, it does generate an unbearable amount of heat when you are riding at low speeds, under 4550kmph. Going fast does avert the issue but if you find yourself stuck in slow moving traffic on a hot summer day then your calves will surely feel the tingle.

the new Apache quite nicely and brought down the vibration levels quite a bit but I felt that there is room for improvement. You do feel a noticeable buzz coming from the handlebar and eventually the pegs at around 5500rpm in the second gear and at 6000rpm in the third gear. A little more work and TVS would have hit it home.

2) VIBRATIONS

3) LIMITED SPACE FOR PILLION RIDER

TVS has managed to tune the engine on

While the cushion on the Apache is

www.motownindia.com | www.micorporate.com

decently long and quite comfortable, seating two wellbuilt people would be a bit of a bother.

4) SIDE STAND

SCAN TO VIEW THE VIDEO*

Due to the slightly rear set footpegs, the extension to pull out the side stand resides between the footpeg and gear lever. This can take some time to get used to as you might find yourself reaching behind the footpeg as a habit.

#SEATBELTS

Importance of wearing seat belts Report: P. Tharyan; Photography: Motown India

S

afety, unfortunately, is a subject in India that is usually pushed under the carpet not only by the common man but also by the different authorities in our country. Every year thousands of people die on Indian roads in car accidents. Many of the deaths involving occupants of the car could have been avoided had they been wearing a seat belt.

Modern cars today come with seat belts that have features like the pretensioner and a force limiter. The seat belts are today mandatory for all seats in a car. There are all kinds of seat belts like a lap belt or a sash belt. You can see a lap belt in some of the middle seats that basically go around your waist. Then you have the sash belt that is an adjustable belt that goes around the shoulder and can be removed manually after a collision. You can see a lot of truck drivers and those driving old vehicles in India wearing these sash belts which only prevent you from lunging forward in case there is a collision. Modern seats belts are basically three point ones, while there are 5 point and six point harnesses which are basically used in sports cars or race cars. I shall be demonstrating the benefits of a three point safety belt that comes with a pre tensioner and a force limiter. The different scenarios given below will help one understand the benefits of wearing a safety belt.

SCENARIO 1: FRONT OCCUPANT | NO SEATBELT | NO AIRBAG You are sitting in the front seat and you do not wear a seat belt and there is no front air bag in the car. During a frontal collision at speeds above 25 to 30 km per hour, you will be thrown in front against the dashboard and the windscreen and depending on the impact and the speed at which the vehicle is travelling you can get severely hurt or can receive fatal injuries.

SCENARIO 2 : FRONT OCCUPANT | NO SEATBELT | WITH AIRBAG You are in the front seat and you are not wearing a seat belt but the car has a front airbag. In that case when a collision takes place, the airbag is deployed and you are hit smack on the face and in the process you can crack a few of your facial bones and or can even receive fatal injuries. Frontal air bags are generally designed to deploy in “moderate to severe” frontal or near-frontal crashes, which are defined as crashes that are equivalent to hitting a solid, fixed barrier at around 12 kmphor higher. An airbag can deploy in about 55 milliseconds, according to various engineering studies. This is about the same amount of time it takes you to blink your eyes. In most cases, the airbag will come out at a speed of between 160kmph to 354 kmph per hour. At this speed, an airbag can cause major injury to a person, so it is important to be at least 10 inches away from the airbag when it deploys. This is where the role of a seat belt comes into play.

SCENARIO 3 : FRONT OCCUPANT | WITH SEATBELT | WITH AIRBAG

and you are in a position to get out of the car safely.

SCENARIO 4 : FRONT OCCUPANT WITH A BABY | NO SEATBELT | NO AIRBAG You are in the front seat without wearing a seatbelt and having a baby in your lap. Now in a car without an airbag, in the case of a frontal collision, both the adult and the baby would be thrown forward and there are chances of both of them receiving fatal injuries. The baby can even die or crushed against the windscreen because of the impact.

SCENARIO 5: FRONT OCCUPANT WITH A BABY | WITH SEATBELT | NO AIRBAG You are seated in front and you are wearing a seat belt, while the baby is held firmly in the lap. This is one dangerous situation. In the case of a frontal collision, when there is no airbag and there is all possibility that the child will be flung from the adult’s arms and the child crashes

You are in the front seat and you are wearing a seat belt and the car also has an airbag. In the case of a frontal collision, when the air bag is deployed, the pretensioner in the seat belt restrains you from lunging forward. The air bag is deployed and within milliseconds, the force limiter allows you to gently hit the airbag which acts like a cushion. Moments later the airbag deflates

through the windscreen leading to the child dying or receiving fatal injuries.

SCENARIO 6: FRONT OCCUPANT WITH A BABY | WITH SEATBELT | WITH AIRBAG Now let us assume that the car has a front airbag and you are seated with your seat belt strapped on and the child is sitting in your lap. Then in case of a frontal collision, when the airbag is deployed, the situation becomes very dangerous. There have been cases of children being killed by a deploying airbag, so it is vital that the airbag be turned off if a child is in the front seat. The ideal situation is, if the child, depending on his or her age, can be made to sit at the back with seat belts on. Little ones can have their own child seat that can be fixed to ISOFIX mounts. Today all modern cars come with ISOFIX mounts.

SCENARIO 7: REAR OCCUPANT | NO SEATBELT Here the adults in the front seats are belted up but those at the back are not wearing seat belts. This scenario is dangerous for

www.motownindia.com | www.micorporate.com

all occupants of a car. In case of a frontal collision, the occupants at the back are tossed in front and in the process they can knock their skulls against the ones in front or even the windshield causing grievous injuries to all or even leading to the death of all or some of the occupants. Wearing a seatbelt is of paramount importance, not just for the driver or any one of the occupants. It is a must for every person in the car. A few months back when we did a video to check the driving habits of those in New Delhi, we were appalled by our findings. A majority of Indian drivers and occupants did not wear seat belts. Children seldom wore seat belts. Most important the record among policemen, paramilitary forces, the military, the paramedic and even the fire engine people was dismal. I have only one question for all these people of the law. Are you all not supposed to wear seat belts too? Is there a law preventing them from wearing seat belts? I guess in India nobody really bothers. Please remember, seat belts are not like your pajama strings which keep your pajamas from slipping down. Seat belts save your life and those of your dear ones. Start wearing them.

M

onsoon season is one time when driving becomes a nightmare and can lead to accidents if you are not careful. Listed below are a few precautions that one needs to keep in mind while driving during rains.

CHECK THE WIPERS: First and foremost, you need to check the wipers of your cars. The wipers have a tendency to wear out over a short period of time. Please remember, the wiper keeps your windscreen clean and clear. It also

46 | MOTOWN INDIA | JULY 2018

Report: P. Tharyan; Photography: Motown India means that windscreen liquid needs to be filled up and the wiper nozzles cleaned so that it squirts the fluid perfectly. Remember, when you are driving in the rain and through wet roads, a lot of dirt is thrown at the windshield by moving vehicles on the road. So not only is the wiper working hard, but the nozzle too is squirting fluid to clean your windshield. If your car has a rear windshield wiper, do check that too.

CHECK THE TYRES: Now coming to tyres, you need to ensure

that your tyres are in good condition and the treads are deep enough for it to grip the roads. Please remember that the tyres are inflated with the right air pressure. As rains come pouring in, and roads get wet and water logged, tyres find it difficult to grip the road. In case your tyre is more towards the bald condition, you can definitely expect your car to slide and dance around the road. Talking of tyres, there is something called aquaplaning or hydroplaning. It is best you understand this concept and

take it seriously. During wet conditions, a layer of water builds between the wheels of a vehicle and the road surface, leading to a loss of traction that prevents the vehicle from responding to acceleration and braking. The grooves of a rubber tyre are designed to disperse water from beneath the tyre, providing friction even in wet conditions. Aquaplaning occurs when the tyre encounters more water than it can disperse. If more than one tyre aquaplanes, you will definitely lose control of the car. Hence, even if your tyres are good and you have to drive in wet conditions, please drive very slowly.

KEEP YOUR LIGHTS ON Lights play an important role during rains. During rains, it’s best you drive very slowly. In such conditions, it is important to keep your headlamps on, the hazard lights (in case it’s pouring and visibility is really affected) and tail lights on. This will warn other vehicles in front and at the back to be careful with their driving. They will notice your car and perhaps keep a distance.

SWITCH ON YOUR AIRCON AC/Heater have their own role during rains: Humidity during rains is another issue

www.motownindia.com | www.micorporate.com

that needs to be tackled by every driver. Thus, it is important to ensure that your air conditioner and your heater are in good condition during rains. Depending on which climatic condition you are experiencing, hot or cold, if it is raining you experience high levels of humidity which creates a lot of mist on your windscreen. A lot of drivers can be seen using a cloth to wipe the mist that appears on the windscreen from inside, thus taking their eyes off the road. This is dangerous. All you have to do is to simply use the air conditioner or the heater as the case may be and direct the air flow towards the

JULY 2018 | MOTOWN INDIA | 47

FEATURES

windscreen. The AC or the heater help to dehumidify the car and in turn demists the windscreen. For the rear windscreen, one can additionally use a defogger, i.e,.if your car has that feature.

CHECK THE RUBBER BIDDING AROUND DOORS & WINDOWS Rubber bidding around the doors and the window glass needs to be checked. Since monsoon rains lash pretty hard, you do not want the water entering your car and spoiling your seats and carpets. Make sure the windows are rolled all the way up during your drivein the rains. If water does enter the cabin of the car, it can damage the car’s carpets, the floor board, the seats and in all probability the wires running at the bottom.

DRIVE CAUTIOUSLY WHEN TAIL PIPE IS SUBMERGED IN WATER Now it’s time to talk about driving during rains. If you are driving in rain, make sure you are driving slow with your lights, but more important you have to avoid waterlogged areas. Remember, your car is not a boat; rather it is a four wheeler and is meant to move on dry land. As long as your tail pipe is not submerged, you can keep driving but the moment you have to wade through water where the level of water goes above the tailpipe level, then you need to be cautious. In such a scenario, driving in second gear is the best thing to do. Drive slow and steady and do not stop at all and change gears in such a situation. Changing gears or going fast in such condition is very dangerous. The car can go out of control and it is possible for the water entering the tailpipe. It is very unlikely that it reaches the engine. If the vehicle stalls, then it’s best to push the vehicle to higher grounds. The tailpipe is generally called the exhaust where the fumes come out, The tail pipe consists of a muffler, a resonator, a catalytic convertor and it finally joins the engine at the exhaust manifold.

AIR INTAKE PIPE SHOULD NEVER BE SUBMERGED IN WATER Never drive a car into deep waters where the water level is way above the tail pipe and covers almost you entire grille area. Because here lies the air intake. It’s like your nostrils from where air has to get in. Can you imagine what happens when you pour water into your nose? You will choke and die. Broadly speaking, the air intake system consists of the air intake tube, air

48 | MOTOWN INDIA | JULY 2018

resonator, air filter, air flow sensor, throttle body and the air intake manifold that feeds the engine. If water were to ever get into that area, you can be rest assured that you will be saddled with a huge bill for the engine overhaul. Today with vehicles getting more and more electric in nature, wading through deep waters can tamper with these electric wires running all across the length and breadth of the car. Vehicles that are made for extreme off roading have air intake tubes which are placed real high. So even if they wade through lots of water, they can come out without stalling. They are also wired and built different for clearing all kinds of hurdles.

WATCH OUT FOR JAYWALKERS AND STRAY ANIMALS In India, when you are driving on a rainy day you have to also be careful of people and animals suddenly crossing your path. Since your brakes, tyres and visibility are all compromised during wet conditions, you need to drive slow and steady with your eyes on the road.

WATCH OUT FOR WATER LOGGED POTHOLES This is a serious problem in our country. Since the potholes get filled with water and in case you are driving fast when it is raining, you may hit the pothole violently and damage your suspension set up.

LOOK OUT FOR UPROOTED TREES AND BROKEN BRANCHES Another important thing to watch out during rains is for fallen trees and branches. Since the horticulture department in India is notorious for not regularly pruning trees and plants growing on road sides, you are bound to see a lot of trees and branches falling during heavy rains. Watch out for them. And always try avoiding parking your car under a tree during heavy rains.

STAY SAFE IN YOUR FARADAY CAGE Last but not the least, the monsoon season means thunder and lightning. In case you are on the road and it’s raining, please do not get worried. In case a lightning were to strike your car, you should definitely be safe. If a lightning strikes your car, it will travel around the surface of the vehicle and then go to the ground. This occurs because the vehicle acts like a Faraday cage. The name Faraday comes from the English scientist Michael Faraday who invented the Faraday cage.

W

e picked up the Kia Rio hatchback for a short drive to understand the different aspects of Kia Motors as a company. It’s similar to speaking to a member of a family and understanding the upbringing of the person which in turn reflects the overall character of a family. The Rio is one of Kia’s global best-sellers. The Rio sales constitute as much as 15 per cent of the company’s total sales. We were not handed over the spec sheet of the car so I really had to explore for myself the details of the car. The Kia Rio comes with three petrol engine options, one a 1.2 litre, 1.4 litre and a 1 litre 3 cylinder turbo GDi. From the looks of it and the response of the engine, I guessed it was a 1.2 litre. The throttle response, the brilliant acceleration, the ride quality and the car’s overall performance including braking were well above the average level. The Rio is a decently sculpted car with straight lines and smooth surfaces and not to miss is the ‘tiger-nose’ grille, with a gloss black grille mesh and surround. The grille is integrated with the bifunction headlamps and this features a U-shaped LED daytime running light signature. The bonnet too is long and sleek. The car sits on smart alloy wheels with 205/45 R17 tyres. The side profile of the car too is sporty and at the rear it has thin and sculpted rear lamps. The latter features an arrow-shaped LED light signature. Once you are inside the car, you are definitely bowled over by its top notch quality. Whether it is the seats or the plastic used on the dash and the door panels, everything about the Rio is upmarket. The buttons and knobs on the dash area, the steering wheel

www.motownindia.com | www.micorporate.com

controls, the tilt and reach steering, all of them make the car very feature laden.

The dashboard is angled towards the driver, a layout which gives the car a definite sporty feel and look. At the centre of the dashboard is a high-resolution touchscreen. The cabin comfort and the driving capability in the Rio are all very good. It is not fair to compare this car with either the Hyundai i20 or any upmarket hatch in India, because this car I was driving was meant for an international audience. Since India is an extremely price sensitive market, as and when Kia begins to make cars in India, it’s got to take the price factor seriously. Then comes the mileage and of course the performance and features. Indians go for value for money. They compare the product they plan to buy with what the competition has to offer. Then they do a million comparisons and finally make a final decision.

The Kia SP Concept shown at the Auto Expo 2018 in Greater Noida looks like a fine looking SUV. And considering the quality and performance of the Rio, I presume Kia is bound to bring in a well-crafted and well built car into India. Questions like “Kya features hain?”, “Kitna deti hain?”, “Performance kesi hain?”, et al, will have to be addressed by the new product. And knowing the fine reputation of the Hyundai Group, in which Kia is a part, one can definitely expect a perfect value for money product in the SP Concept SUV when it comes in its final avatar in 2019. The Rio was just a random sampling we did, because they say the proof of the pudding lies in the eating, I mean testing!!

he moment I got behind the wheels of the BMW 530d M Sport, I stopped brooding. I was getting the car for a test review several months after it was launched. So what I did first was to take it for a short walk. Yes, an innovative feature that this car gets from its 7 series sibling is that you can move the car forward and backward with the help of a display button. This is ideal for parking into tight spots.

The BMW kidney grille with vertical slats in black highgloss open up the moment the car gets going, allowing the air from the front to cool the aggressive engine. Having had some fun with some of the exciting features, it was time to drive the BMW 530 M Sport. The BMW 530d M Sport is the most expensive of the five series sedan from BMW

offered in India at a price of Rs 66.20 lakh (ex-showroom). The 2,993cc diesel engine produces an output of 265hp@4000rpm and a peak torque of 620Nm @2000–2500rpm. The BMW 530d M Sport can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in just about 5.7 seconds and for those who want to know, its fuel efficiency, it gives 18.59 km to a litre of diesel. The engine is mated to an 8-speed steptronic transmission. Apart from the manual

selection of gears and the paddle shifters, the car offers different drive modes like Comfort, Eco Pro, Sport and Adaptive. In each of the modes, the light colours in instrument panel changes. When the Sport mode is engaged, it changes to a dark reddish colour, signifying a bit of aggression. Volkswagen Group led by Skoda Auto to invest `8,000 crore in India 2.0 project First model built on new MQB-A0-IN platform by 2nd half of 2020 Global car major Volkswagen will be investing Euros 1 billion (Rs 8,000 crore) in India for its India 2.0 project which was announced by the group recently. This money will be used to develop new Skoda models based on the MQB platform, its plant in India and for setting up a research centre in Pune. Volkswagen has entrusted its group company Skoda Auto in India to play a major role in the overall growth of its products in India as part of the group’s India 2.0 project. All models designed and produced locally in India in the future will be based on Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform, which already fulfills the stricter legal requirements for India that come into force in 2020. With the ‘India 2.0’ project, Skoda Auto is also taking over responsibility for the subcompact MQB A0 platform, initially with a focus on India (MQB-A0-IN).

58 | MOTOWN INDIA | JULY 2018

The first model built on the new MQB-A0-IN platform will be launched in the second half of 2020. What are the fundamental advantages of the MQB? By standardising components, dimensions and production processes, costs are lowered and production times are reduced. Furthermore, the MQB increases flexibility when developing new vehicles. Most of the technical development will take place in India.

MODULAR TRANSVERSE MATRIX (MQB) MQB, which stands for Modularer Querbaukasten in German language, translates to Modular Transverse Matrix– a technology platform that makes the vehicles lighter, more efficient, spacious, safe and comfortable with a more dynamic drive system and appearance. Within the MQB, uniform parameters are maintained across model series and brands – such as the mounting orientations of all engines. The modular component system also offers variable parameters for optimal and individual implementation in a wide variety of models. They include the wheelbase, track widths and wheel sizes. All new MQB models are designed so that - along with the classic types of drive systems

(gasoline and diesel engines) - they can always be built as natural gas, hybrid or E-models as well. Late last year, Volkswagen Group had announced that it would be investing about Euros 22.8 billion throughout the world from 2018 to 2022. Dr.Herbert Diess, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, had emphasised that: “The investment package which has now been adopted will give a decisive boost to the largest product and technology offensive in the history of the brand. It is our objective to position Volkswagen sustainably in the lead in the volume segments and to take up a leading position in e-mobility.” The Volkswagen Group comprises of some of the best auto brands in the world and many of them have some kind of significant foothold in India. Apart from brands like Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, Skoda and Volkswagen, the group also owns the Ducati motorcycle brand.

Unfortunately, the Volkswagen group was involved in a massive diesel emission related scam a few years ago wherein it had to pay billions of US dollars as penalty. The India 2.0 project will be headed by Gurpratap Boparai, Managing Director, Skoda Auto India Private Ltd, who joined the company recently, after having served with Fiat in India. In a press meet in the Capital, Bernhard Maier, CEO, Skoda Auto said that the “phase 1 of the India 2.0 Project is already underway” and that by 2025 the two brands Volkswagen and Skoda together will have a 5 per cent market share in the Indian passenger car market. Beginning 2020, both Volkswagen and Skoda will be launching at least 2 models each every year in India for the Indian passenger car market. Incidentally, in 2017, a total of 17,100 Skoda vehicles (+31.4%; 2016: 13,000 units) were delivered to customers in India. Today, Skoda Auto India Private Ltd offers four Skoda models: the Rapid, Octavia, Superb and, since October 2017, the Kodiaq. The Rapid is produced at the Pune plant, whilst the Octavia, Superb and Kodiaq models are manufactured in Aurangabad,

which is also where the company’s headquarters are located. Both plants are located in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. As part of the ‘India 2.0’ project, Volkswagen Group’s position in India will be strengthened for the long term. Around one and a half years ago, Skoda Auto was given the task of developing a sustainable model campaign for the Skoda and Volkswagen brands in the Indian volume segments. Maier also told journalists that the one billion Euros will be invested towards the implementation of the project, primarily between 2019 and 2021. To ensure the products are perfectly suited to the Indian market, Skoda Auto will set up an engineering centre in the country. Bernhard Maier said, “Experts predict that in the next few years India is going to become the third-largest automotive market worldwide. With our ‘India 2.0’ project we are now creating the right conditions for sustainable growth there. Our objective is ambitious, but achievable: together with the Volkswagen brand, we are seeking a market share of up to five per cent in the long term, depending on market and segment development.”

Gurpratap Boparai said, “With the ‘India 2.0’ project, Skoda Auto India and Volkswagen Group India are in an excellent position to optimally confront the dynamics of the Indian car market. In India, we will offer worldclass products at prices that amount to a paradigm shift in the automotive industry. We will manufacture the new products on the localised MQB A0 platform, which already fulfill the stricter emission and safety standards that are expected to come into force in India in 2020.” Initially, Skoda Auto will develop the MQB A0 platform with a focus on India (MQB-A0-IN). In the second phase, Skoda will be assessing the possibility of exporting vehicles manufactured in India. Skoda and Volkswagen will develop several products based on this platform. The model campaign will begin in 2020 with a mid-size SUV (more than 4 metre in length). To ensure that the planned models will fulfil the requirements of Indian customers, Skoda Auto will develop these products at the world-class engineering centre which is part of the India 2.0 project. Within the India 2.0 Project, Skoda Auto India plans to gradually create 4000 – 5000 new jobs.

Audi and Hyundai plan to develop fuel cell technology Audi AG and Hyundai Motor Group are driving the development of fuel cell technology. The two companies plan to cross-license patents and grant access to noncompetitive components. The agreement is currently subject to approval from the applicable regulatory authorities. Through their collaboration, both partners aim to bring the fuel cell to volume production maturity more quickly and more efficiently. Audi and Hyundai are also exploring more far-reaching collaboration on the development of this sustainable technology. As a first step, Hyundai Motor Group will grant its counterpart the access to parts that are based on Hyundai’s knowhow accumulated from the development of ix35 Fuel Cell as well as Nexo. Long ranges and short

refueling times make hydrogen an attractive future source of energy for electric mobility. This is particularly true for larger automobiles, where the weight advantages of the fuel cell vehicle inherent to its design are particularly pronounced. Besides further advances in fuel cell technology, key aspects for its future market success include the regenerative production of hydrogen and the establishment of a sufficient infrastructure. Within the Volkswagen Group, Audi AG has taken on

the development responsibility for the fuel cell technology and is currently working on its sixth generation. The Group’s Fuel Cell Competence Center is located at the Neckarsulm site. At the beginning of the next decade, Audi will introduce the first fuel cell model as a small

series production. As a sporty SUV, the model will combine the premium comfort of the fullsize segment with long-range capability. The cross-license agreement with Hyundai is already focused on the next development stage intended for a broader market offer.

Volvo Cars hopeful of increased sales & revenues Volvo Cars, the premium car maker, has announced new financial and operational ambitions that will position the company as a leading player in the global automotive business by the middle of the next decade. On the operational side, it expects to generate half of all sales annually from fully electric cars, one third of all cars sold to be autonomous driving cars and half of all cars it offers to customers from its subscription service. Volvo Cars expects these initiatives to transform its connection to its customer base, with the aim to build a total of over 5 million direct consumer relationships by the middle of the next decade, creating new

sources of recurring revenue. This will also offer the company far greater potential to develop connected and other services for customers. “Our customers’ expectations are changing rapidly. This means that Volvo Cars is also changing rapidly. These initiatives will help transform Volvo from being purely a car company to being a direct consumer services provider,” said Hakan Samuelsson, President and Chief Executive, Volvo Cars. On the financial side, Volvo Cars aims to generate premium level profitability in line with other premium car makers, driven by increased sales and revenues across all three global sales regions, and a broader range of cars including

sales to the new segment of autonomous ride-hailing companies. The company’s improved financial performance will also be driven increasingly in the future by industrial synergies generated with its affiliated partner companies. Volvo Cars expects to benefit from lower procurement costs, shared development costs and economies of scale alongside Polestar, its premium performance electric car brand, and Lynk& Co, the new global car brand in which Volvo Cars owns a 30 per cent stake. “This paves the way for Volvo Cars to continue growing fast into the middle of the next decade,” said Samuelsson, adding that “The company

has been transformed since 2010 into a global premium car company. Now it is time for this transformation to be turned into a period of sustained profitability in line with other premium brands.” Volvo Cars achieved record profits and sales in 2017, with a 27.7 percent increase in operating profit and global sales of 571,577 cars. The results marked the company’s fourth consecutive year of record growth, underlining the transformation of Volvo’s finances and operations since being acquired by Geely Holdings. It has also expanded its global manufacturing footprint and completely renewed its model portfolio in recent years.

Volvo Cars Tech Fund invests in automotive sensor company Luminar Volvo Cars, the premium car maker, has completed the first strategic investment via its newly-founded investment fund by taking a stake in Luminar, a leading start-up in the development of advanced sensor technology for use in autonomous vehicles. The investment in Luminar, based in Palo Alto, California, and Orlando, Florida, deepens Volvo Cars’ existing collaboration with the firm, which currently focuses on development and testing of its sensing technology on Volvo cars. unorganised and offline prior to the company’s adoption of Moglix’s solution, leading to excessive manual effort resulting in loss of time and information in transition. There have been multiple cases that led to mismatch in ledgers leading to delayed reconciliations and extra human effort by finance department and vendor’s team. Other challenges at Uno Minda Group included mismatching of invoices and inefficient means of supplier performance. Uno Minda group also proactively identified, that post the GST regime, if a

vendor’s ledger mismatches with their ledger, the Input Tax Credit(ITC) will be unnecessarily blocked in the system. ITC is typically 18% to 28% of the working capital. With GST coming in, this was the perfect time for them to streamline and digitize the entire procurement interaction with their suppliers. To battle these challenges, Uno Minda Group successfully adopted the vendor portal solution that Moglix developed on SAP’s SCP environment and seamlessly connected the portal to SAP using HCI connectors.

Volvo demonstrates autonomous bus in Sweden

S

tarting on June 15 and throughout the Volvo Ocean Race competition in Gothenburg, Sweden, the pioneering autonomous Volvo bus will be shown to specially invited guests. The prototype is based on Volvo’s commercially produced electric city bus, which has been modified for autonomous operation. At the demo event there will be presentations to show how this technology can contribute to safer and more comfortable travel as well as more efficient handling of vehicles in the depot. “With low noise level and emission-free operation, electric bus systems provide an excellent alternative for attractive and sustainable public transport. With various degrees of automation, we can make even further progress regarding safety, comfort and efficiency. Leveraging Volvo Group

66 | MOTOWN INDIA | JULY 2018

technologies, we will demonstrate these opportunities for the future during the Volvo Ocean Race,” says Håkan Agnevall, President Volvo Buses. The autonomous 12-metre bus is designed to give its passengers a safe and comfortable ride. It is programmed to accelerate and brake gently and smoothly when starting off and stopping. At bus stops, the bus always halts in exactly the same position, with the same gap between the bus and the platform for convenient entry and exit. The bus is equipped with sensors that maintain a constant watch around the vehicle. Information from the sensors is used to navigate the vehicle, and also in the future to prevent incidents and accidents by identifying objects approaching the bus, adjusting its speed accordingly or stopping the bus. The autonomous bus is designed for gentle driving so that its

operation is as energy-efficient, environmentally friendly and economical as possible. “The technology also permits more efficient vehicle handling when the bus is not in traffic operation. With autonomous buses depot staff can focus on service and maintenance instead of having to charge the batteries, drive to the bus wash and park the bus. Tomorrow’s buses will be able to do all this on their own,” relates Håkan Agnevall. The autonomous bus will also be used for research into bus platooning, where buses drive in close convoy in urban traffic. “Volvo has been a pioneer within high capacity transport systems based on buses, so called Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). Now we take the next step by using automation to wirelessly connect the buses to bus trains with high flexibility”, says Håkan Agnevall, adding that “Electric bus systems provide an attractive

Volvo Car Mobility launches mobility brand M Volvo Cars of Sweden has launched M, a new brand that will expand the company’s global mobility operations by providing dependable, on-demand access to cars and services through an intuitive app. Moreover, M will learn about its user’s needs, preferences and habits, personalising the customer relationship. It will debut in Sweden and the US in the spring of 2019. “Volvo Cars is becoming more than just a car company. We recognise that urban consumers are rethinking traditional car ownership. M is part of our answer. We are evolving to become a direct-to-consumer services provider under our new mission ‘Freedom to Move’,” said Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo Cars president and chief executive. M is developing proprietary learning technology that asks users about their specific needs instead of merely informing them where they can pick up a car. “The services currently available mainly offer alternatives to a taxi or public transit,” said Bodil Eriksson, CEO of Volvo Car Mobility, adding that “We’re focused on the way people use the cars they own, which sets us apart. We aim to provide a real alternative to that experience.

It will be fully integrated into M in 2019, making the service available to all existing Sunfleet members. “Mobility is undergoing a fundamental transformation and Volvo Cars is leading that change. The launch of M creates new sources of revenue for Volvo Cars and will be integral to the company’s ambition to build more than 5 million direct consumer relationships by the middle of the next decade,” said Samuelsson. “Stockholm, Sweden, will serve as M’s base of development and where we already conduct extensive testing. A broader Beta test will take place this autumn,” said Eriksson. Established in 2018, M is a new brand from Volvo Car Mobility, a wholly-owned and

stand-alone entity within Volvo Car Group that aspires to deliver a better alternative to car ownership for urban and metro consumers. M’s mission is to enable more people to move freely, meaningfully and sustainably. Its proprietary

New Head-Up Display technology in the new Volkswagen Toureg The Innovision cockpit in the new Touareg – an interactive digital landscape consisting of display and control elements – is the blueprint for the cockpit of the future. A head-up display lends the perfect finishing touch: it projects a virtual summary of the latest key information into the driver’s selective field of vision. Data (the vehicle’s current speed, the maximum permitted speed, etc.) and visual information from the navigation system feel as though they are projected into the space immediately in front of the Touareg, i.e. the street. This ensures the information is visible to the driver at all times. From a technical point of view, the information is actually reflected on the windscreen as a transparent display – hence the name “windshield head-up display”. At 217 mm in width and 88 mm in height, it is the largest

head-up display offered by Volkswagen. The driver can set the position (height) of the display and vary the display spectrum; in addition to the speed, features such as traffic sign recognition and navigation guidance can be activated. Warnings (such as if the vehicle exceeds the maximum permitted speed) can also be shown. This spectrum also includes information about currently activated assist systems. Pictograms and information for the ACC automatic distance control system, cruise control system, night vision assist system, lane assist system and side assist system (both of which issue lane departure warnings) can also be projected onto the windscreen. Finally, the driver can set the display brightness and colour scheme. The brightness is also automatically controlled depending on the ambient light.
