Government provides £56 million funding boost for EV chargers

Local authorities across the UK will gain funding to hasten the roll-out of public electric vehicle charging points.

The government has announced a major increase in funding to support the roll-out of public electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

A total of £56 million will be made available, with the aim of delivering 2,400 new EV charging points in the near-future.

e money will also help local authorities to plan for thousands more charging devices in the longer term.

e announcement follows analysis earlier this year that showed the UK was lagging behind its target to install 300,000 public electric car charge points by 2030.

Extra EV funding across the UK e new funding will expand the existing Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) pilot scheme, taking it from three to 16 local authority areas. is includes £1.9 million for Cumbria, £2.5 million for Waltham Forest and a substantial £8.5 million committed to the West Midlands.

In total, £22 million from central government funding will be supported by £17 million from private initiatives. A further £2 million will come from public funds across the various local authorities. A new £8 million LEVI Capability Fund will help local authorities to put in place the right sta and systems to plan for EV charging infrastructure.

Helping drivers switch to EVs

As part of the package of measures, the government has also committed £7 million to the On-Street Residential Chargepoint Scheme (ORCS). is provides funding for local authorities to locate chargers in areas without o -street parking. Some 3,000 devices have already been installed through ORCS, with a further 10,000 on the way.

Transport minister for technology and decarbonisation, Jesse Norman, said: “ e government is giving local authorities across England additional help today to energise their charge point roll-out plans. “[ is] commitment will lead to thousands of new chargers being installed, and plans for tens of thousands extra in due course, so that more people than ever can make the transition to using EVs.”

The leading product for the Mazda electrifcation, the Mazda MX-30 launched in 2020 as Mazda’s frst mass production battery electric vehicle, with a mild hybrid model joining the product lineup for some markets. The MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV is a series plug-in hybrid that continues to deliver the same customer value as the original MX-30 while simultaneously offering owners new ways using their car as a battery electric vehicle. The MX-30 3-Skyactive R-EV has a 85 km battery electric driving range suffcient for a wide range of everyday driving needs well as the ability to use a generator to enable long distance drives. On top of this, the entire driving range is motor-powered.

Mazda chose to use a rotary engine to power the generator system. Leaving the unique way in which rotary engines can produce the required output with a small power unit, Mazda developed the new rotary engine to work as a generator and positioned it on the same level as the axle as a high-output motor and generator in the motor room. Mazda then paired this compact electric power unit with a 17.8 kWh lithium ion battery and a 50 L gas tank to achieve the unique series plug-in hybrid system.

The MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV also supports customers with an active lifestyle by offering features including compatibility with both normal and fast charging, 1,500 W power supply functionality, and three drive modes drivers can choose from to suit different driving situations: Normal, EV and Charge modes.

Additionally, the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV will be available in a special edition model; “Edition R.” Edition R vehicles feature black-based exterior and interior trims with Maroon Rough Metallic, a remake of the roof colour of Mazda’s frst passenger vehicle, the Mazda R360 Coupe, as an exterior accent colour. It also includes exclusive design elements such as a rotor-shaped emblem sewn into the foor mats and embossed on the seat headrests.
