MOTOREX NEWS

What’s wrong with the multinational oil companies? Dear readers, The price of oil is skyrocketing, as we’ve all discovered at the gas pump if not before. Meanwhile the cost of producing crude oil has remained practically unchanged. The result is record profits for the multinational oil companies on crude oil and simple, high-volume standard products like gasoline, diesel fuel and heating oil. And lubricants? They too are based on crude oil and have risen in price accordingly. But the production and distribution of lubricants is complex and demanding. The diversity of products is enormous and, driven by technology, ever-increasing, while the quantities produced remain relatively small. Marketing these products requires a deep technical understanding of customer needs and the technology in use. Thus lubricants have always been more of a sideline for the petroleum multinationals. And in the current situation, the financial markets won’t allow the complicated lubricants business to dilute the highly profitable crude oil and gasoline business. So get rid of lubricants? As a private Swiss family business, the BUCHER MOTOREX-Group is not driven by the financial markets. Lubricants are our core business. For us, daily contact with customers, complex technology and developing new lubricants are not nuisances, but a welcome challenge. We are pleased, therefore, that new customers every day from every industry are discovering the benefits of working with MOTOREX.

MOTOREX is supporting the Wings for Life spinal cord research foundation, a non-profit organization that aims to promote and expedite research and scientific and clinical progress towards a future cure for spinal cord injury (SCI) paralysis. Unfortunately, accidents on public roads and in motor sports frequently result in spinal cord injuries. For this reason, many motor racing personalities such as Gerhard Berger, Max Mosley, Stefan Everts and Heinz Kinigadner, have become prominent ambassadors for this dedicated Austrian foundation. See www.wingsforlife.com for more information. MOTOREX ZOOM SYNT new-generation grinding oil Leading producers of grinding machines, precision tools and machining fluids gathered in Augsburg, Germany, for Grindtec 08, the inter-

national trade show for grinding technology. The show was an ideal moment for MOTOREX AG’s industrial lubricant division to present MOTOREX ZOOM SYNT, the latest generation of SWISSGRIND grinding oils. This synthetic performance grinding oil’s excellent functional parameters at a highly competitive price make it a sure-fire winner. It was developed in collaboration with leading grinding center manufacturers and extensively tested.

Conserving resources Wherever possible, MOTOREX uses environmentally friendly technologies in line with the ISO 14001 environmental standard at its production plant in Langenthal.

KTM’s superbike: the 1190 RC8 KTM keeps surprising us with innovative new products. The RC8 (two-cylinder, four-stroke 1,148 cc V 75°) was presented to the world press in Ronda, Spain. Motorcycle journalists from around the world were given a chance to test the newly developed RC8 on the exclusive Ascari private racecourse. Rene Maehr of Austria will begin gathering racing experience with this machine for KTM in the Superstock FIM 1000 Cup category during the current racing season. As KTM’s official lubricant supplier, MOTOREX had a prominent place in Ronda. MOTOREX and its lubricant experts were involved in the development of the RC8 right from the outset, providing valuable engineering input. The engine features a dry sump lubrication, and a wet multiple disk clutch carries drive power to the six-speed transmission. KTM’s choice of fully synthetic high-performance motor oil: the trailblazing MOTOREX POWER SYNT SAE 10W/50.

One innovative example is the plant’s own truck wash. Instead of hard water from the tap, soft natural rainwater is collected and treated to make it suitable for washing vehicles. The facility boasts a modern wastewater separation and water recovery system and uses rapidly biodegradable cleaning agents. As a result, significant quantities of water are saved each time a truck is washed, and the trucks come out sparkling clean without the use of water softeners.

Approved by VOLVO: CONCEPT FS-V SAE 0W/30 VOLVO cars are extremely popular not only in Switzerland. For maintenance, VOLVO prescribes a fully synthetic motor oil meeting the stringent ACEA A5/B5 specifications.

likewise analyzed in the in-house lab, and the results are used directly in further product development.

A practical example For outsiders the world of the MOTOREX laboratories may appear somewhat abstract. The following scenario gives a clear picture of the lab’s day-to-day work in analysis of raw materials, finished products and customer samples from actual use.

Knowledge transfer These analyses present a detailed picture of the condition of lubricant and machine. They allow early identification of errors, and permit you, the customer, to draw important conclusions. The MOTOREX laboratory team and the services it performs will always be a key success factor in a strong power play by MOTOREX.

Naturally findings from racing, which consistently deliver vital information under extreme deployment conditions, are also valuable. Racing samples are

Analysis of a motor oil For motor oils, the relevant test methods are combined in a single block. In most cases a representative view of the condition of the lubricant is not provided by a single test value, but rather a multitude of test results and their interpretation. The following tests yield important information: Viscosity at 40 °C /100 °C and the viscosity index determined from these figures Determination of reciprocal laminar displacement of two adjoining fluid layers.Loss of viscosity, especially in the higher temperature range, may mean reduced lubricating capacity and increased wear. Infrared readings IR spectra can be used to identify even minor variances from fresh oil.Additional signals in these spectra may be caused by admixture of foreign oils, rust contamination, coolant intrusion or oxidation products due to thermal or temporary overloading of the lubricant. When using biofuels in diesel engines, one sometimes finds significant fuel concentrations in the motor oil. Stability over time by measuring total base number The increase in oxidation products during use reduces TBN as alkali reserves decline. If TBN falls below a critical threshold, negative changes in the tribological characteristics of the lubricant could result. Flash point This value indicates possible contamination of the motor oil by fuel.Dilution by fuel results in reduced lubricant effect; early recognition can prevent major damage.

Measurement of elemental content This measurement provides information on the wear resistance of a motor oil formulation. In addition to iron, primary indicators include other alloy components such as chromium, molybdenum, copper, etc.Modern alloys and composite materials have made additional elements such as silicon and tungsten a focus of testing. It is often possible to identify problem areas in an engine based on element concentrations. Testing of additive concentrations Changes in these concentrations can indicate whether admixture of other oils has occurred.Topping up with a lower-quality motor oil often results in a reduction in the additive concentration. Measurement of evaporation loss with NOACK This method is used to determine oil loss through evaporation.Ever thinner lubricants represent a major challenge in modern motor oil formulas. Measurement of low-temperature flow behavior This is done with the CCS (cold-cranking-simulator), whereby a motor oil is chilled to low temperatures and the oil resistance (dynamic viscosity) is measured.

The viscosity (flow resistance) of lubricants is measured at 40 °C and 100 °C with six new viscosimeters.

Alexandra Bühler was introduced

Entirely on your own

A knack for machinery is a must

to railroads by her partner. Her talent

Concentration and self-reliance are required and nurtured in the engineer’s cab. A signal malfunction, a warning light on the control panel – Alexandra Bühler allows nothing to faze her. She has to keep a clear head and make the right decisions, even if there’s a wild boar on the tracks ahead, as actually happened not so long ago! A constant radio connection to the dispatching office ensures timely exchange of information.

The three different generations of trains in use on the WAB require native sensitivity and profound skill. The oldest type BDhe 4/4 self-propelled railcars were built in 1947, the BDhe 4/8 dual cars are from 1988, and modern low-floor panoramic articulated trains from Stadler Rail built in 2004 round out the fleet. “They all run completely differently, and they brake differently too,” says Alexandra Bühler during a breathtaking trip on the cog railway up the Kleine Scheidegg. Kleine Scheidegg station is 2061 m above sea level, right at the foot of the worldfamous north face of the Eiger.

few female locomotive engineers in Switzerland. In the summer she works in Ticino, in the winter against the backdrop of the Eiger – there’s no lack of variety.

Locomotive in capable hands who has an interest in machinery, applied… and landed a job! Today the Monte Generoso Railway employs eleven engineers, four of them women. Although the job is generally male-dominated, the focus is on ability, not gender. Thus Alexandra Bühler received a great deal of support during her training and was given numerous valuable tips from her trainers of both sexes. The summer season for our engineer from north of the Alps lasts from April through October.

Physical movement and mobility have always been important to the native of the Bernese Oberland. She began her career over 25 years ago with a commercial apprenticeship at a travel agency and later criss-crossed Europe as a flight attendant with Crossair. Her athletic talent stood her in good stead: “You have to be in good physical shape to work in the air,” says Bühler. She later made use of her fitness during many years as a ski instructor in Saas Fee and Grindelwald. Versatile: the engineer applies her many talents to the fullest at the Monte Generoso Railway.

Opportunity at MGB

When the Monte Generoso Railway (MGB) in Ticino announced that it was seeking locomotive engineers, Bühler,

A trip up Monte Generoso is always worthwhile, whether for the interesting train ride

or the magnificent view.

Many different factors influence the operation of a train: the rolling stock, signals, terrain, the weather, whether any permanent way work is in progress… The Monte Generoso Railway dates back to 1890, when cars were pushed by steam locomotives built by SLM in Winterthur. Migros founder Gottlieb Duttweiler purchased the railway in 1941. In the early eighties the line was electrified. Today passengers have a comfortable 40-minute ride from Capolago to the summit, 1,704 meters above sea level. There they enjoy a magnificent view of Lakes Lugano, Como, Varese and Maggiore, the Po plain and Milan, and the landscape stretching from the Apennines to the Alps.

Since the engineer’s cab is not separated from the passenger compartment on Monte Generoso trains, there are always passengers who want to chat about the beautiful flora and fauna of Ticino. “That’s when you really have to be alert,” says Bühler with a self-assured grin.

into service.

A dream job Being a locomotive engineer is an extremely demanding job. The constant differences in altitude in the mountains are challenging, as is the responsibility for the passengers. Still, Alexandra Bühler wouldn’t trade jobs with anyone in the world, at least not for now. Her voice will be calling out “All aboard!” for many years to come.

A welcome change At the start of November, Alexandra Bühler changes employers, engineer’s cabs and geographical environments: from Mediterranean Ticino up into the Alpine massif of the Jungfrau Region. This brings variety to her work – the best of both worlds for a locomotive engineer! At the Wengernalpbahn (WAB), Alexandra Bühler keeps busy not only in the locomotive cab, but also in the maintenance shop. Train timetables are strictly regulated, and the “reserve time” is used to carry out repairs and maintenance at the shop in Grindelwald-Grund. Incidentally, both railways use MOTOREX lubricants, including many biodegradable products. Bühler is interested in machinery and not afraid to work alongside railroad equipment specialists underneath the train. Not a bad idea, since the engineers are responsible for inspecting trains in the morning before they make their first run of the day. The engineers must check to make sure monitoring systems and brakes are working and the train is fully operational.

Alexandra Bühler runs a system check before putting the WAB’s 230-passenger Pano 143

For refueling, the gas is compressed to 250 – 300 bar in a compressor. At the pump, it is dispensed into a special tank in the vehicle at approximately 200 bar. Natural gas is measured in units of one kilogram. One kilo of natural gas contains about as much energy as 1.5 liters (0.4 gallon) of gasoline or 1.3 liters (0.34 gallon) of diesel fuel.

Special CNG motor oil Gas engines require specially formulated motor oils. They tend to produce increased deposits on the pistons and in the combustion chamber, and acidic combus-

tion residues can impact lubricant equilibrium. MOTOREX has developed its FOCUS CNG SAE 10W/40 high-grade high-lubricity motor oil for mobile CNG engines in utility vehicles and buses. FOCUS CNG uses LowSAPS (low sulfated ash, phosphorus and sulfur) and the latest additive technologies. The synthetic (Synthetic Performance) specialty motor oil provides ideal lubrication and lasting protection against wear and oxidation for all components.

For diesel engines too Does your organization use utility vehicles and buses with both natural gas and diesel engines? MOTOREX FOCUS CNG SAE 10W/40 is approved for both CNG and diesel engines (see box). This means a single motor oil can be used to service a mixed vehicle fleet. Your MOTOREX partner or our technical customer service department will be glad to provide further information.

A growing number of public transit enterprises are turning to CNG technology. The main component of CNG is the gas methane. Natural gas often also contains significant admixtures of long-chain hydrocarbons such as ethane, propane and butane. Natural gas is a non-toxic, combustible, colorless and generally odorless gas, making it a perfect fuel for passenger vehicles operating in densely populated areas.

OEKOSYNT HEES scores double! MOTOREX magazine: “Mr. Accola, as a selfemployed excavator operator, what is important to you when it comes to your machinery?” Paul Accola: “Every machine should have as little down time as possible and always be operational. Quality always pays off – sooner or later every machine owner with an entrepreneurial mindset realizes that.” MOTOREX magazine: “What does that mean exactly?” Paul Accola: “I’ll be glad to give you an example: Maintenance work on construction equipment is often postponed due to urgent work orders, and then breakdowns occur at the worst possible moment. Deadlines crumble, and it’s guaranteed not to pay off in the end! In business as in sports, peace of mind comes from having something in reserve.” MOTOREX magazine: “You use OEKOSYNT HEES hydraulic fluid from MOTOREX in your Menzi Muck A91. How has your experience with it been so far?” Paul Accola: “As you know, hydraulic oil transmits enormous forces and is exposed to extreme thermal stress. I recently excavated a pit for a building practically non-stop. I never got a sense that the hydraulics were compromised despite the high temperatures

or that hydraulic pressure was dropping. As I worked I kept thinking about the catchphrase about performance reserves that I like to use.” MOTOREX magazine: “What about service life? Have you had to change hydraulic fluid since the first time you filled up with OEKOSYNT HEES?” Paul Accola: “After 800 hours of operation we sent an oil sample to the MOTOREX lab. The report was positive. They recommended fine filtration and another lab analysis after another 800 hours. Compared to the hydraulic oils I used before, I can work about four times longer with OEKOSYNT HEES and regular laboratory analysis. That pays off!”

OEKOSYNT HEES has the following outstanding characteristics: – miscible with comparable products – 3 – 5 times longer service life than mineral oil – fully synthetic with the latest additive technology, extremely versatile – approvals:Bosch Rexroth A4VSO125, DIN ISO 15 380 (HEES), etc. – Good non-ferrous metal compatibility (VDMA 24570/Linde test) – rapidly biodegradable according to OECD 301 B – oil analysis by MOTOREX lab included

MOTOREX magazine: “Any final words?” Paul Accola: “Comprehensive performance reserves combined with rapid biodegradability are arguments that score double for me. You know yourself how fast a damaged hydraulic hose can burst… And now if you’ll excuse me, we have a damaged water main nearby and there’s a lot of excavation work to do.” MOTOREX magazine: “Thank you very much.”

Hydraulic fluid samples are analysed for particulates, condensates, deposits, etc. in the MOTOREX laboratory.

Proprietary developments: torque wrenches and ratchets for modern medical and dental technology.

Regular measurements, e.g. with a projector, and careful documentation provide proof of efficiency gains.

Precision mechanical engineering,

innovatively produced

Josef Ganter Feinmechanik, a company in the town of Dauchingen in Ger-

The special case of Monel

many’s Black Forest, is characterized by an ethos of continuous innovation.

The company manufactures a sophisticated component from high-tensile Monel 400 (a combination of 63% nickel, 28 – 34% copper, < 2.5% iron and 2% manganese) for use in an endoscope. This nickel-copper alloy exhibits high tensile strength and is very resistant to atmospheric corrosion, salt water and a wide range of acids and alkaline solutions.

The latest innovation at Josef Ganter is using ORTHO NF-X universal cutting oil.

Roland Müller always uses innovations wherever possible. In summer, the air is cooled by a geothermal cooling system.

“We offer what has to be the world’s most comprehensive range of items for the mandrels sector”, states Roland Müller, the owner of the company. The company also produces a range of precision turned components with diameters of up to 25 mm, predominantly for the medical technology sector. Specialist operators use eighteen CNC automatic lathes with up to twelve axes to manufacture short and extended production runs, and they can also turn their hands to the production of sample components.

Optimized production

The company has grown by manufacturing mandrels. Now precision dental tools give it a second string to its bow.

14

u Ac t

Today, competition in the mandrels market is intense and global – with the inevitable consequence of declining prices. The company was only able to maintain quality standards at competitive prices by introducing an optimized production process running on a 3-shift basis. When you talk to Roland Müller, you can immediately sense his enthusiasm for everything new.

Searching for more performance The turning machine specialist from Dauchingen became interested in the MOTOREX vmax-Technology, with its capacity for enhancing feed and cutting speeds and extending tool service life. For some time now, the machining parameters of components manufactured in various different production runs have been progressively raised. Up to a certain point, performance improvements of up to 60% have been achieved in operations such as turning, milling, boring and engraving! Positive results were also obtained with extended tool service lives. The tools are now able to survive unmanned shifts without any problems. This greatly boosted efficiency, and since the changeover, damaged tools have effectively become a thing of the past. High standards of dimensional integrity and surface quality were maintained.

The conventional cutting oil used previously made this component very prone to discoloring, and it therefore required a subsequent polishing operation. In contrast, using MOTOREX ORTHO NF-X, the high-sheen surface finish was retained during and after machining. Through special additives and the resultant thermal synergy benefits of ORTHO NF-X, it was then possible to dispense with the polishing process.

They are manufactured on various machines, including sixteen Tornos DECO 2000s. These precision machine tools demonstrate clearly just how versatile modern machining centers are, and just how much working freedom companies can now enjoy.

G + G Torino: la grande passione Italy is not all sunshine and pizza – competition in the lubricant market is fierce. Nevertheless, G + G Torino is successfully marketing the MOTOREX MOTO LINE in Italy. Nanni Tamiatto first entered the twowheeler market over thirty years ago as a distributor of various motorcycle and scooter brands in northern Italy. Step by step he added further product categories: clothing, helmets, spare parts, accessories and, not least, lubricants and care products – from MOTOREX of course.

The Italian racing fan first became aware of MOTOREX through the brand’s involvement in motocross. “Ho visto vincere tanti di quei campioni del mondo nel cross con MOTOREX” (translated: “I’ve seen many world motocross champions win with MOTOREX”), says Tamiatto candidly. And that’s where he got the business idea of marketing MOTOREX products for bikes in Italy. Knowing the industry well, the entrepreneur asked himself how he could get close to his target market at reasonable cost. The answer was soon found: using a motor home equipped as a mobile racing service center, Tamiatto and his employees have been present at the racetrack for the past few years for several MX world championship races and numerous national off-road championships such as the KTM Trophies. Tamiatto’s initiative has paid off for his business, as a growing number of racers take advantage of his skilled services and advice on lubrication topics.

Strong distribution

Hard to miss: the G + G racing service motor home is front-and-center at many motorsport events.

Today no fewer than 18 salespeople travel all over Italy for G + G Torino. They work on their own account and are proud to sell high-quality Swiss products through motorcycle dealers from Turin to Palermo. At G + G Torino they benefit

from carefully thought-out logistics arrangements with a central warehouse at a highly efficient freight forwarder’s facility. Orders are usually ready to ship the same day.

Chain lubrication, a different approach It’s hard to imagine farm equipment, manufacturing and trades without chains. Roller chains are widespread, but hollow pin chains, conveyor chains, side bow chains and the like also all require proper maintenance.

Proper and systematic lubrication

Rising tendency The market seems to appreciate G + G Torino’s initiative and enthusiasm. MOTOREX sales have grown every year since 2004. Says Tamiatto, “the product is the first thing, it has to be absolutely compelling. Next is a top-notch sales structure, and having the lowest possible fixed costs is especially important in such a fiercely contested market. But the most important thing is a passion for motorcycles. Without that you’ve got nothing!” The company owner knows where he’s going and is convinced that the MOTOREX MOTO LINE has the right stuff to capture a lot more territory in Italy… On that note, we continue to wish G + G Torino and MOTOREX “tanta forza e passione” (much strength and passion)!

There are few chains that don’t require regular lubrication. The type of chain, the load it is subjected to, where it is used and its accessibility are all important when performing maintenance. Readily accessible chains subject to even loads can easily be lubricated manually in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations – with MOTOREX CHAINLUBE 622, for example. This synthetic chain lubricant is colorless and ideal for all chain types (X and O-ring tested). Its special formula prevents dirt (dust etc.) from accumulating on the chain and water from seeping into the links. It measurably reduces wear and extends the chain’s service life. CHAINLUBE 622 is available in several adhesion grades.

Did you know? Proper lubrication can extend the service lifetime of chain systems up to tenfold or even more!

Penetrating and pressure resistant A lubricant must not only provide protection from external influences such as water, dust, heat, etc., it must also reduce friction with a heavy-duty, shear-proof lubricant film and hydrodynamically separate the surfaces. The latter property is especially important inside the chain. MOTOREX SUPERGLISS lubricants contain special surface-active agents that improve friction coefficients, penetrate quickly and adhere perfectly in a very short time. known Playmobil toys. The chains in its warehouse are lubricated with CHAINLUBE 622.

If chain drives are inaccessible, fully automated lubrication systems or lubricant dispensers may be used. These precise applicators can apply lubricant with brushes or felt pads. They are reliable and apply lubricant continually and naturally as the chain moves. Precise dosing keeps lubricant consumption as low as possible, reducing operating costs and protecting the environment. The BUCHER MOTOREX-Group’s technical customer service specialists have found solutions to countless chain lubrication challenges. Your MOTOREX partner will be glad to help you with advice and the right product!

Automatic lubrication is more reliable and cheaper to maintain. MOTOREX has the right lubricant for every application.

MOTOREX takes to the terraces Cool ideas

For once the latest cool idea isn’t exactly about mobility, but rather the eye-catching MOTOREX advertising at La Maladière Stadium in Neuchâtel. This state-of-the-art soccer stadium in Switzerland was dedicated in June 2007 and provides not only a home for the redand-black XAMAX team, but also jobs for over 400 people with 54 shops, 28,000 square meters of commercial space and a total of 12,000 seats. Some of the electrical power and hot water consumed here is produced on-site by 730 square meters of solar panels on the stadium rooftop. And in case things should get a little too hot in Neuchâtel’s soccer citadel, the crew of the basement fire station can swing into action at a moment’s notice.

The optically striking walkways up and down to the spectator seats provide a unique space for MOTOREX’s outdoor advertising. The ups and downs of XAMAX, on the other hand, are something the team in red and black will have to deal with on its own. www.xamax.ch

...that high-tech guide bushes help to increase productivity? Guide bushes, properly lubricated and calibrated to tolerances of one in a hundred, are a crucial element in ensuring the dimensional accuracy of manufactured parts. Even the tiniest variances can have a critical impact. MOTOREX provided “guidance” in a synergy project with W. Dünner SA in Moutier with its pioneering MOTOREX ORTHO NF-X cutting oil. The process consistency figures for ceramic-surface guide bushes were extremely high. Ceramic presents no problems from a lubrication perspective, but special temperature-stable high-pressure additives are required due to the extreme temperature differences in the guide bushings. ORTHO NF-X achieved top marks in all categories. www.dunner.ch
