2007 trade fair start: Swiss-Moto and Geneva Motor Show Swiss-Moto in Zurich was MOTOREX’s first trade fair appearance of the still young 2007. The new MOTOREX AIR FILTER CLEANER SET was a big hit with offroad fans. The Streetbike Freestyle World Championship was also held during the fair in Zurich. Visitors to Swiss-Moto totaled over 60,000. The “automotive spring” arrived with the international Geneva Motor Show.

The FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme) and a delegation from UNEP (United Nations Environmental Program) recently signed a Memorandum of Cooperation at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne. The document expresses the FIM’s commitment to environmentally aware handling of resources and materials at its motor sport events. The FIM also awarded its 2006 Environmental Award to the organizers of the 2006 and 2007 Snowcross World Championship in Veysonnaz, Canton Valais, at the event, which was attended by over 150 invited guests from the worlds of sports, business and politics. MOTOREX provided the collection and recycling infrastructure at the Snowcross Championship and other events. Congratulations!

Blending systems, the heart of production

Innovative process control for blending systems BUCHER-MOTOREX produces simultaneously in nine mixing systems – a highly complex challenge where every move has to be just right. A novel computerized control system helps MOTOREX enhance process consistency and repeatability.

Screening every mixer unit allows precise capture of data such as temperature curves. The temperature drops immediately when an additive is fed in, for example. If the specified temperature is not restored within a prescribed time period, important chemical reactions will not take place.

With the rapid advancement of application technologies on all fronts, BUCHERMOTOREX is now able to use high-tech systems for its production processes. Lubricants are highly elaborate products and their sophisticated refinement processes demand ever more accurate blending and dispensing systems. The current generation of products is composed of a rapidly growing number of raw mate-

rials, all of which have to be fed into the blender in just the right order and exactly the right time. An automated control circuit ensures that no production errors can occur and guarantees maximum reliability – the prerequisite for comprehensive quality assurance.

The laborious, highly sensitive process of refining base fluids and additives into MOTOREX-lubricants and other products takes place in a mixing container. This container possesses intake, circulating and outlet lines and heating coils. These lines are now fitted with electronically controlled solenoid valves, and the mixing container itself is equipped with various sensors. A central computer captures all the desired information and displays it clearly on various monitors, enabling full automation of the mixing process. Precision flow meters calibrated for the volume and specific weight of the fluid medium pass key data for the selected production process to the central computer. Every step of the production process is detailed in a recipe, including: – choice of mixing unit including batch capacity – temperature range – base fluid and additive feed – temperature change over time – mixer rotation speed – tank designated for interim storage – quality assurance parameters – decantation destination – cleanup

The visual display makes the MOTOREX production pro’s typical workday more colorful and far more informative. Specialists can control and monitor every operation at the touch of a button. Procedures can be fully automatic or, if necessary, manually controlled. The operator sees immediately on screen whether a container is full, for example, or how much longer it will take to fill.

Due to modern additives and the need for strict homogenization, i.e. complete mixing of all ingredients, today’s recipes call for warmer temperatures and longer process times than earlier ones. In every production run, samples are regularly sent to the laboratory, which is responsible for ensuring strict compliance with quality standards. Instant calculation of thermal expansion allows optimum filling of each unit, yielding better capacity utilization. A timedelayed program allows all heating, stirring, circulation and pumping processes to be controlled and continuously monitored.

Bulk additives are piped directly into the production process. The prescribed additives for “special mixtures” are dispensed by weight and conveyed directly to the mixing container through assigned fillers.

KRAL AG tests ORTHO NF-X 15 “Finding a high-quality cutting oil is no easy task,” says a recently published article in KRAL AG’s employee magazine. Three times now the Lustenau, Austriabased manufacturer of precision screw spindle pumps and flow meters has carried out tests of different cutting oils from various suppliers on a screw spindle milling machine. Each time the machine had to be completely cleaned down and refilled, but until now not one test delivered the level of improvement hoped for. Successful milling operations demonstrate that ORTHO cutting oils meet the requirements for all workpiece sizes.

Test candidate number 4: MOTOREX ORTHO NF-X MOTOREX and its Austrian importer METZLER GMBH & CO KG had to present some very convincing arguments to persuade KRAL’s specialists to run another test. But this time was different. During the very first test run on a GLEASON-PFAUTER P60 spindle milling machine, cutting speed in milling complex geometries was increased by 20%. This performance boost was achieved without any further changes, and the test manager, Rene Schröter, was convinced that he had found the right machining fluid. Herbert Hopp and Stefan Splinter, who attended the test, also expected further improvements of up to 10%. The specialists also eagerly observed swarf for-

ORTHO NF-X ISO 15 received top marks on all three quality indicators in milling the stainless steel screw spindles. The oil’s low viscosity of only 15 mm 2/s also allowed the oil delivery pump to run at its full 200 l/min capacity, ensuring optimum swarf removal and cooling. The faster machining speed further enabled better pitch and lead precision during milling operations. More exact and longer-term testing is still needed to determine distortion characteristics in Tenifer finishing (see box), but here too initial results are very promising… Experience from the test clearly shows that the universally applicable high-performance cutting oil MOTOREX ORTHO NF-X pulls off the trick of being suited not only for all materials, but also for all machining modes.
