What is automotive art?

It is easier to state what it is not: automotive art is not the art of painting a flame job on the side of your Ferrari! Automotive Art is the image and form of the car, whether it be a racing scene or just the scaleddown automobile standing alone. The art piece can take many forms, from a sculpture in ceramic or wood to a painting in oils or watercolors to a serigraph (silk screen). There are many types of automotive art today, available through special showings, advertisements in automotive magazines, trackside art shows, or direct purchase from artists or dealers, as well at automotive auctions. The earliest automotive art goes back to pre-World War I, when speed and mobility were associated with the excitement of the new motorcar. The art took the form of posters, commercial prints, stained glass, and even fine art including crystal figurines depicting the automobile. The medium had no boundaries, it sold to the automotive admirer. Today, automotive fine art can also be seen for sale at famous auction houses before actual rare automobiles are brought up before the auction block. It is very difficult to estimate prices of new and old art; like other types of art and cars, the price depends on the buyer at the moment of sale. An automotive enthusiast is well advised to buy what he or she likes, and not what he or she thinks may appreciate in the next few years. Enjoy your investment. Artists’ works have been appreciating each year. And now that automotive art has been accepted by the public as “art,” your likes and dislikes are the only thing that will hold you back. If you are on a limited budget, a poster can be acquired for a small amount of money; getting the artist to sign the poster will increase its value. If the poster is racing-oriented, another way to add to the value is to find the driver of the car that is shown in the poster or even the owner of the car and ask for his or her autograph. For a little more money, one can acquire a limited edition serigraph or lithograph that is signed and numbered. Sometimes the subject is an event; other times it can be a specific race or specialty automobile. The price range depends on the number printed and signed and the reputation of the artist. Also, whether the artist is still painting or has passed away. After poster art, the range of work is unlimited. There are artists who specialize in bronze sculptures, such as Lawrence A. Braun, who casts in a very limited number by the lostwax process. Braun’s subjects can be the bust of a famous driver, an automobile creator, or a special car winning a race. Another artist who works in bronze is Jeff Gamble from racing such as “Duel at Avus” to belt buckles for automotive clubs. Included in this specialty is Stanley Wanlass, who often adds a handpainted patina to his subject or presents his work in sterling silver.

Wanlass often selects his models from his own collection of restored automobiles. Another talented artist is Randy Owens, who is a master silkscreen printmaker. His original impressions (also called serigraphs) are very colorful and limited in edition size. Owens almost exclusively uses the race car as his subject. His images are often signed by the race drivers who have driven those machines. Another type of art is called crosshatching by Jerry Gambaccini. It is the drawing of two layers of hatching at right-angles to create a mesh-like pattern. An original can take months to complete and limited edition prints are reproduced from the original, then numbered and signed by the artist. Jay Koka paints with acrylic on canvas. His style is a unique blend of realism and impressionism. He has been a poster artist for many international automotive events. To start collecting, consider going to car shows that feature artists such as Amelia Island (Florida) Concours d’Elegance as well as Pebble Beach (CA). Many of the automotive races (Daytona 24-hours, Sebring, Indianapolis 500 to name just a few) also have art shows where the artists appear and sign posters. The limit on collecting is not the price it is how much wall space you have left to hang more art. Enjoy the hunt for that treasured piece of art celebrating the joy of car watching.

Leslie serves on the national Lincoln Dealer Council and travels periodically to Ford World Headquarters to represent the national Lincoln dealer body and their issues in Dearborn, Michigan. “There is such momentum right now behind the Lincoln brand and Germain Lincoln of Naples. I can’t wait to see where the future will take us. Right now it seems that the sky is the limit.”
