2020 AMG GLC 63 SUV Mercedes-Benz

The rigid standards of AMG meet a flexible SUV cabin in the GLC 63. Its 469-hp biturbo V8 is crafted by hand. AMG all-wheel drive and air suspension is quick on its feet. And with new style, it’s aesthetically and athletically gifted.

It’s safe to say that the sports car landscape has been almost completely decimated by big, brutal muscle machines wrapped in SUV bodywork. Whereas once one would have advertised a recent promotion or professional windfall by parking some sleek two-seater in the driveway, today that impulse has been replaced by the desire for a tall-riding, high-horsepower, luxury-badged trucklet.

Spend a little time behind the wheel of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 and it’s not hard to understand why. Sitting on the same platform as the C-Class sedan, the GLC 63 grafts crossover appeal and thunderous turbocharged V8 punch onto a chassis that’s more motorsports than mall crawler - all without compromising the practicalityfirst promise of its sport-utility roots.

Modern technology has birthed many outstanding improvements into the automotive world. Among those, the incredible amounts of grip afforded by high-end tire compounds, up-to-the-minute stability control systems, and computer-controlled all-wheel drive systems, have made the latest crop of super SUVs possible. All the power in the world is useless, as the old saying goes, unless you can find some way to stick it to the pavement and keep the shiny side up with the pedal planted.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that the GLC 63’s 469 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque from a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 would be more panic-inducing than pleasurable absent the rig’s formidable all-wheel drive prowess. Mash the gas in the Mercedes-AMG and 60-mph arrives in a scant 3.6 seconds, a number that will make any number of swoopy coupes blush. It’s incredible quickness from a bulky auto that can also carry four riders in reasonable comfort, and while its handling is definitely informed by its heft, the GLC 63 is certainly more competent in the corners than one might reasonably expect. All this from a vehicle that, in addition to a full passenger complement, can also swallow as many golf bags, sets of skis, or piles of big box bounty as you might see fit to stuff into its generous cargo area. It’s this dual personality - smooth family friendly commuter by day, rumbly eight-cylinder ruffian by night - that has helped to shift dollars away from sports cars, with most drivers willing to compromise a little on feel behind the wheel rather than leave the spouse and kids behind on the next outing.

Throw in an interior that’s been refreshed for the current model year to include the expansive MBUX infotainment system, as well as fit and finish befitting a Mercedes-Benz, and the AMG hauler is a $72,000 bruiser you can button down for polite company. Just hit the button on the console to switch the vehicle’s drive profile from Sport to Comfort to calm the 9-speed automatic transmission and quiet its quad exhaust pipes, and you’re back to model citizen mode. No one but you has to know just how much firepower is sitting under your right foot - until it’s time to merge onto the highway, of course.
