bold explosion hit this summer, splattering nails, lips, cheeks and eyes in bright hues. In a way it harks back to the good old 80s where ‘putting on your face’ really did mean a liberal application of colour all over. Our foremothers may well remember this as a time when make-up practically preceded the wearer into a room, accompanied by the heady scent of hairspray solvent, of course. One’s armoury most certainly required a dedicated vanitycase en vacance (probably exceeding current cabinbaggage limitations) and heaven forbid the notion of travelling light. The decade’s Vogue cover girls paint a pretty conclusive picture: Brooke Shields with lilac lids, ochre lips and carefully shaded bronze cheeks; Kim Alexis with coral pout, rosy cheeks and heavily kohled eyes shaded with fuchsia and finished with thick black brows; and Rachel Williams with shiny pink lipstick, orange bronzer and pastel dusted eyes with lashes to die for. Just for the record these ladies weren’t donning sculpted LBDs and minimalist jewellery either. Think dangling earrings, a la Alex Carrington, and rainbow bright ensembles – colour, and lots of it, ruled the news stands and the wardrobes du jour. Natalia Vodianova for Guerlain this spring wouldn’t have looked out of place on those covers (although admittedly, the chandelier earrings were in absence) with her carefully executed cat’s eyeliner,
