baby walker safety Baby walkers are designed so that babies can sit in the walker and then move it around by pushing it along with their feet. Although, they’re called baby walkers, they are not really designed to help babies learn to walk, but more to give them a degree of mobility, to have a fun playtime session with the parents (or carer) and for your baby; the fun of being able to see the world from a different more up right position. The following advice is essential to consider before your baby uses a walker. • carefully follow the instructions • always check the walker is correctly assembled, thoroughly read over the user guide or instruction leaflet that comes with your baby walker. Keep it in a safe place, should you need to refer to it again at any time. • never leave your baby unattended – the parent or carer needs to share and be part of this play time activity. • only use on flat surfaces. Check surfaces are flat and free of objects that may cause tipping over. • guard all fires, heaters and cooking appliances, remove hot liquids, electrical flexes and other potential hazards from your baby’s reach. • prevent collisions with glass in doors, windows, furniture, and any access to stairs or steps. • be aware of your baby’s development • baby walkers are intended to be used by babies who can sit unaided (from approx six months) and then only for short periods e.g. 20 minutes to a maximum of 30 minutes. • make sure both your baby’s feet touch the floor – the seat height should be adjustable for this purpose. • remember your baby will move much more quickly, particularly in a reverse direction, than when crawling. • walkers are not suitable for already accomplished walkers. • general safety... • always lock all castors when using in activity mode, unlock all castors in walker mode. • confine use of the baby walker to one room at a time, keeping doors shut. • never carry the walker with your baby in it. A ll our walkers conform to (BS) British Standard EN 1273:2005 – please only use baby walkers to this standard - baby walkers with older standards are less safe.
