Kearney, Neb. - The Missouri Southern Women couldn’t over come a slow start as they fell 65-50 to the University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers Saturday night on Buckle Court inside the Health & Sports Center. After shooing just 11 percent in the second half against Washburn the Lions (9-4, 3-4 MIAA) suffered through a cold first half at UNK (6-6, 2-5 MIAA) as they managed to shoot 28.6 percent (8-for-28) from the field including a 1-for-9 performance from three point range.The first quarter went back and forth as Southern tied the Lopers three times. Senior Sharese Jones tied the game at 3-3 with 8:55 to go in the first on a free throw, junior Deb Holcomb tied it at 10-10 with 4:11 to play on a jumper, and sophomore Bri Shavers tied the game at 12-12 on a post move with 2:25 to play in the quarter. UNK closed the quarter on a 4-0 run to take a 16-12 lead into the quarter break. In the second quarter the Lopers extended their lead to 23-12 following a pair of free throws by Kennedy Sander and a three pointer and lay-up from Laramey Becker. Southern chipped away with a three pointer and a fast break jumper from freshman Chelsey Henry to cut the lead to five at 25-20 with 1:56 until intermission. UNK again answered with a 6-0 run to push their lead to 31-20 with lay-ups from Courtney Aitken and Bri Starks and a jumper from Becker. The third quarter started with a three pointer from Jones and a lay-up by Shavers from senior Kenya Wilson-Brown to cut the Loper lead to six, 31-25. However, UNK answered with their own 8-0 run and pushed their lead to 16 at 41-25 with 6:03 left in the quarter. A Loper jumper from Starks with 2:54 to play gave UNK their largest lead of the game at 48-30 before the Lions would cut it down to 14 off a pair of free throws by Jones and a jumper from sophomore Dru Clark. The Lopers and Southern traded buckets to end the third with freshman Desirea Buerge scoring the lone Lions goal with just over 30 seconds left in the quarter. The fourth quarter saw the Lions get as close at 11 three times on a three pointer from Holcomb at the 8:24 mark, a jumper by Shavers with 5:10 to play, and a free throw from sophomore Jenson Maydew with 1:30 left. UNK dominated the fourth out scoring the Lions in the paint 10-6 and 7-3 on second chance points. Jones led the Lions with 15 points and seven rebounds. Wilson-Brown pulled down six boards to go with her five assists and three points while playing all 40 minutes. UNK was led by Becker with 21 points and 10 rebounds and McKenzie Brown added 11.

Hays, Kan. - The Missouri Southern Women’s Basketball team dropped their third straight game on Monday night at Gross Memorial Coliseum 68-60 to top ranked Fort Hays State. The Lions (9-5, 3-5 MIAA) took the early lead as sophomore Dru Clark got the scoring started with a lay-up just 20 seconds into the contest. Fort Hays State answered with a 6-0 run before senior Sharese Jones sank a pair of free throws to cut the lead to two and followed that up with a layup on the next Southern possession for a 6-6 tie. Jones scored eight of her 10 first half points in the opening stanza as the Lions trailed number one Fort Hays State 15-12 after the first. The Tigers started the second quarter on a 7-0 run to open a 22-12 advantage before senior Tami Morice converted on a three point play to cut the lead back down to seven with just over seven minutes left in the half. Jones hit a lay-up to cut the lead to five with 6:11 left in the half and following the trading of free throws junior Deb Holcomb sank a jumper to cut the lead to three at 23-20 with just over four minutes until the break. After a free throw from senior Kenya Wilson-Brown cut the lead down to two at 23-21 FHSU went on a 10-0 run over the last 3:43 to take a 33-21 lead into the locker room. Coming out of the locker room the Lions and Tigers traded punches for the first two minutes with each scoring a pair of buckets before Taylor Chandler and Chelsea Mason gave FHSU their largest lead of the night at 41-26 with just under seven minutes left in the half. Freshman Desirea Burege made a lay-up off the assist from Wilson-Brown to cut the lead to 41-28. A 13-2 run by the Lions over the next five minutes cut the lead to two at 43-41, Holcomb scored six of her team high 19 during the run. After back-to-back buckets from FHSU’s Paige Lunsford, Clark sank a lay-up as time expired in the third to make it a 47-43 ball game. Freshman Chelsey Henry started the fourth quarter with a lay-up as the Lions clawed back within two at 47-45. Fort Hays State used a 6-0 run to go back up eight at 53-45, before Holcomb’s jumper at the 4:01 mark ended that run and that would be the closest the Lions would get before Clark hit a three pointer at the buzzer to make it 68-60. For the game, the Lions shot 51 percent (24-for-47) from the field but only 50 percent (10-for-20) from the charity stripe. FHSU out rebounded the Lions 42-31 but the Lions out dished the Tigers 14-7 with Wilson-Brown leading the way with six.

Joplin, Mo. – The Missouri Southern women’s basketball program led for more than 35 minutes and the Lions took out the visiting Bearcats of Southwest Baptist, 74-61 tonight on Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. Southern (10-5, 4-5 MIAA) was led by Sharese Jones as she had her fourth double-double of the season with a season-high 27 points and ten rebounds. Deb Holcomb had a career-high 26 points, going 5-10 from deep and playing all 40 minutes, while Tami Morice chipped in a season-high ten points. Dru Clark had a career-high six assists, while Desirea Buerge had a career-high six boards. The Bearcats opened up a 6-1 lead early on, but the Lions went on a 13-0 run capped by a layup from Jones with 2:17 left in the quarter and led 14-6. A bucket from SBU the next trip down made the score 14-8 with 1:52 left and a last-second free throw was the only score for the rest of the quarter as the Lions led 14-9 after one. A three from Holcomb with 8:26 left in the second quarter gave the Lions a 22-12 lead and another three from Holcomb with 6:19 left made the score 26-12. However, SBU went on a 10-0 run and got to within four (26-22) with 4:19 to go. The Lions, however, answered right back and finished the half on an 11-2 run and led 37-24 going into the locker room. Holcomb led all scorers at the half with 16 points. A three from Dru Clark on the Lions’ first possession of the second half put the score at 40-24, Southern. A three from Jones gave the Lions a 17-point lead (51-34) with 4:39 to go and a bucket from Morice with 2:35 left in the quarter pushed the lead to 19 (53-34). SBU finished the quarter on a 6-0 run. A jumper from Holcomb with just over seven minutes to go pushed the Lions’ lead to 60-46, and the lead reached 13 five more times in the quarter before the final tally. Southern shot 47 percent from the field and 43 percent from the three-point line in the game. The Lions made just 68 percent of their free throws in the game, but made 80 percent of them in the second half. The Lions out rebounded SBU 35-33 and forced 17 turnovers, scoring 17 points off of the miscues.
