R AT I O N A L E Ergo = Ergonomics This is a fictitious company that designs based on BIO mimicry. The turtle seem like a suitable animal as a symbol of patience and wisdom. As well as its physical resemblance to our ideas of what aliens would look like. Stylising the head in different styles is a normal process in my approach to the best design solution, after doing styles such as cartoonic I resonated with the elegant design at the end.

R AT I O N A L E Greentech and Inovalux are part of the sqaureone energy group, but even so it was important to differentiate the from each other as unique products/ brands. in the designing of Greentech it was important to communnicate light but instead of being literal in the execution i opted for incorporating type in in the logo, there by having a shape sqaure which would symbolise a lamp and the letter “G� rotated making it both lamp and letter, and the colour was mandatory.

Asapp is a travel app for students. It was important to constantly communicate speed in the design of this interface. This i set to achieve by changing the execution of the buttons as the logo had already set a look and feel that was both futuristic and oozed speed, i made sure that the UI would marry the logo to make up a layout that would be standout from the normal approach of UI design.

NYQ = Nyika: Shona language for Earth Pronounced as “nick�. NYQ seemed to be a suitable name out of all the overly glossy publications that are out there. And being a sustainability magazine from Africa relating to the people that inhabit the continent was crucial. The approach was to conjure feelings of fear as sustainability is a very serious topic. This was achieved by having two covers options, the consequences of our actions or lack thereof. The first one was the result of us abusing resources and polution. the second was much more pleasant and it was the planet as we know or as we percieve it.

Publishing for the future The platform allows for richer content, and it was important to communicate with as many sense as possible, the most achievable being sight, hearing, touch and imagination. It was important to me to carry this theme of a planet at the centre focus of all the articles or a symbol that related to a planet. The content as far a type is no longer a worry and more can be done visually as the bafling words became scrollable or a audio experience. It is also important with interactive publishing to collect information on who is reading the magazine and for customer to customer marketing, so social media plugins be come valuable tools in the production of interactive media. So the designer and marketing are married in all considerations for successful apps.

R AT I O N A L E This is a series of illustrations that explore polarities in everyday society, except ofcourse for when people are replaced by robots and nothing is ever really normal. But each one has either a message it seeks to convey or dialogue between the audience and artist. The reason is that alot of design is mimicry of a western culture, the efforts here are to be derivative of Africa but present it in a modern and sometimes futuristic way.

That Life

by Viwe Mfaku 2012 “That Life� is a hip hop term for a good life, good this sense is everything that is bad for you. And this illustration was to challenge the promotion of self indulgence through advertising and popular media, placing a robot in a situation where he is dissorientated from all of the previous nights consumption FineLiner on paper.

Single Cow by Viwe Mfaku 2011 This illustration explores mordern relationships, online dating... artificial validation through this sci fi cow: a cow which is a symbol for wealth and used a pay for Lobola, becomes the virgin in this sense in need of companionship i.e. Love. FineLiner and pencil on Antalis paper.

Attack

by Viwe Mfaku 2012 The attack illustration embraces traditional fighting, inspired by ethiopian stick fighters technological improvements are made on the boy to enhance him in battle, it also portrays how tradition and science exist in Africa in a graphically powerful visual message. R AT I O N A L E Woolworths is a well recognised retail company that achieves sofphistication in its effortless use of space and typography. Except it hasn’t found a way of relating to a more bucolic market, people that are connected with thier roots and are anchored in family values. This chocolate flavoured coffee range would be targeted at young adults living in urban enviroment but deeply connected to thier nourban upbringing.

We had to get into the mind of our target market. These are university students and the culture the majority subscribe to, extreme sports, body art, pop culture, fashion and self expresion. A wide net which covers an age group and not a race group which had been a perception the brand has made effort to change. The chickens take the place of these young bucks in different enviroments. Ensuring that any young varsity student relates to a fried chicken resturant that understands who they are.
