In this Mosaic… today and there are a number of different versions now by authors who interpret or add to her original version. I love this book. It changed how I thought about a lot of things. I was raised Catholic and spent the first half of my life (and more) with a lot of fear and rigid ideas around the teachings of Jesus and other things in the Bible. What I loved about Shinn is her deeper understanding about the Bible, its scriptures and especially about Jesus’ teachings. Her stories helped me to understand the universal spiritual laws that the Bible records and to embrace them (have faith in the truth of them) instead of fearing them.

boccabellaphoto.com

A large part of her book deals with our expectations. If we expect the worst, then we attract that to us. If we have faith and expect what we truly desire (knowing that the Universe is abundant), that is what we will get too. This cover of Mosaic by Jenny McConnell reminds us to have that faith, knowing that we get what we expect in life. “She waits with expectation” is from Psalms 5:3.

by Connie Brisson A powerful lesson I’ve learned (although it’s NOT easy to always do) is to pay attention to my intentions and expectations, and that includes watching the words that come out of my mouth as words are so powerful. Our subconscious minds do not know the difference between what is real and what is imagined. It just accepts that what you say is true and then it does everything it can (in a way that I can never even try to explain) to make what you said, happen for you. It’s like a super intelligent servant. As a teenager, before I knew anything about any metaphysical concepts, I realized that I was creating my “own reality” by the daydreams I was engaging in. I discovered that if I imagined something over and over, I could literally create a version of it in my life – especially if there were enormous feelings involved. But I didn’t understand it and quickly became so scared of it, so much so that (for a very long time afterward) I would not let myself daydream about anything, in fear that I would somehow create it. So when I later became a student of metaphysical concepts and began to really grasp the “rules of life,” my fear subsided because I then understood why things were happening the way they were (to me). It was many years later, when in an appointment with Tammie Quick, she suggested I read Florence Scovel Shinn’s The Game of Life (DeVorss & Company, 1925). Even though Shinn wrote it in 1925, the concepts are still true

Mosaic Magazine — Summer 2018

Shinn also writes that we need to think/act abundantly in order to attract prosperity. As I was recently making my abundance/wealth vase, it reminded me of her teachings because I was creating something concrete with an expectation of abundance and goodness to naturally come to me. Every time I walk by my vase, it makes me smile. I put a lot of love into creating it and I feel that energy whenever I see it. And now, I will wait with expectation. Then I thought about you… I wanted you to have an opportunity to learn how to make an abundance vase for yourself. So, our next Mystics Meeting will feature Skye MacLachlan (teacher at the Northern Star College of Mystical Studies, www.northernstarcollege.com) who will instruct us on how to create an authentic Feng Shui abundance/wealth vase. Creating an abundance vase is a powerful way to attract prosperity to you (and to ensure the growth of your wealth over time). Wealth to the Chinese is not just about financial wealth; it also signifies love, peace, family harmony and friendship. In traditional Feng Shui, these precious vases would be passed from one generation to the next to ensure the success of the family. Come and enjoy a fun evening with Skye on Tuesday, June 5, and learn all the details that make an abundance vase successful. For more information about the meeting, go to page 31 in the Calendar of Events. Now, please ask a question to the Universe (that you want a mystical answer for) before you read the tarot card article on page 24 by Skye MacLachlan. Ask a question you want some guidance about, so that the information given about the tarot card can answer your question in some way (or provide you with some insights) that you may not have had otherwise. Be open to your intuition as you read it and receive what you need to from it.

Journey to sacred space Spring is in the air. New beginnings are evolving as the renewed birth of nature awakens the universe. This is a time for reconnection as you tune into a deeper energy and travel through the layers to open yourself to the universe. We are all interconnected. Bruce Lipton (Sounds True, 2007) speaks about understanding the universe using the newer quantum understanding of holism: “You cannot separate one energy vibration from another energy vibration. We are connected from the core of our being to the edge of the universe.” Consequently when you interact with your environment you are both sending and absorbing energy at the same time. Nature’s landscape is created in symbols and patterns. From the leaves on the trees to snowflakes that fall, each has an intricate design that can stimulate our consciousness when we sit in stillness and observe their energies. As we journey on the path of life we gather a set of beliefs, habits and patterns that shape our way of being. As you examine these patterns, are there ones that stop the forward movement of your life’s journey? Are these habits preventing you from realizing your highest good? Imagine the feeling of freedom that comes when you change your perspective from being an observer of your environment to that of becoming a participant in your environment.

Creating sacred space in nature assists with aligning your energies with the universe. Old patterns are released from your mind through the powerful process of communicating with nature’s messages and her inherent wisdom. Grief is one emotional pattern that people may hold in their body for years. Horses intuitively know and tune into the frequency of the grief that a participant is feeling. The horse will stop to mirror where the participant’s grief is being held, then stand in quiet reverence holding space to allow the grief to move and be released. This is a beautiful connection of trust, love, compassion and understanding shared between participant and horse. A client shared: “This is a profound experience!” The four sacred directions (East, South, West and North) correspond to the four natural elements of air, fire, water and earth. The concepts of your mental, spiritual, emotional and physical awareness connect to the seasons of spring, summer, autumn and winter. Being present in this awareness and stillness of your environment, both internally and externally, creates your own sacred space to allow for a deeper and more profound connection to communicate consciously with yourself. This awareness leads to greater harmony with your own natural rhythms and patterns. Time to be Herd © Chris Riley — www.rileyart.com

Horses provide a sacred space of infinite possibilities. They foster a partnership to travel inward by slowing your mind down to create a space to listen and hear heartfelt messages from the universe. Horses have the capacity to move energy, as their consciousness is greater than humans. This creates a sacred space for expanding the human energetic field. Horses are very connected and grounded to Mother Earth’s energy and vibrational frequencies. These qualities (combined with their adaptive nature) provide a supportive nonjudgmental bridge between the natural and divine worlds.

Homeopathy meets essential oils upsetting, a big inhalation of one drop is enough to calm them and imparts a renewed sense of equilibrium.

About 15 years ago I fell headover-heels in love. My love consumed me. I talked about it incessantly, thought about it, dreamt about it… You get the picture.

Essential oils will help with headaches, body pain and inflammation, nerve pain, immunity, anxiety and depression, bladder inflammation, skin imperfections, fungal issues and so much more! Plus, you can make effective disinfectants and household cleaners that are safe for children, pets and the environment.

Eventually I did the only thing that could bring me any sanity – I embarked on an intimate relationship with my new love. But you may be surprised to hear that the object of my desire was not a person; it was homeopathy. Or more specifically: Heilkunst Homeopathy.

There’s even an effective alternative to cannabis that offers all of the benefits without any of the negative effects… like feeling altered. How? It has to do with the endocannabinoid system in your body. This system is incredibly complex and plays a key regulatory role throughout your body. Just like hormones, there are receptors for the endocannabinoids all over your body, including your brain. These endocannabinoid receptors bring tissues back into balance which means COPAIBA essential oil can reduce pain, treat seizures, muscle spasms, fibromyalgia, IBS, migraines, insomnia and even anxiety and depression.

This relationship has NEVER disappointed me. Both personally and professionally, the (seeming) miracles that this elegant system of medicine provides continue to awe and inspire! The tried and true method of using homeopathic medicines to manage symptoms while using them in ascending potencies to treat the reason for the symptoms, has proven to be the recipe for remedying the most stubborn cases of nearly anything. So, it is with some chagrin that I confess to the affair that I began in June of last year. I didn’t have a complaint with homeopathy. My interest was purely innocent. But I can’t deny the depth of feelings that I’ve developed for doTerra Essential Oils. I used to think that essential oils were simply candy for the nose. I couldn’t have been more wrong! It turns out that pure essential oils are incredibly powerful medicinal substances that can give relief to a myriad of conditions. Essential oils are made from the parts of plants that protect them from predators and from the environment. That gives us a clue as to how powerful they are. They can be up to 70% more powerful than herbs and they get to work really quickly because they go to every cell in your body within 20 minutes. Plus essential oils are phenomenal at helping with emotions and mood management almost instantly! Once inhaled, the volatile aromatic compounds quickly travel to your olfactory bulb and then into the limbic brain. And folks, the limbic brain is where your emotions and memories are stored.

Because there is no regulatory agency for essential oils, you need to know your company. With doTerra every bottle can be tracked “from seed to table” and they use independent, third party testing which assures the consumer of purity and safety. There’s no question that homeopathy is a powerful system of medicine but the addition of essential oils to my practice gives my patients a safe kit of medicines that provides effective relief in a pinch, while waiting for their appointment at the Quick Health Clinic. Six ways to cleanse gemstones Because it’s so important to understand the basics of working with gemstones and/or crystals, I will focus on this in my next few articles, starting with different ways to cleanse your gems. If a gemstone or crystal isn’t properly cleansed, you won’t achieve good results when using it, but if you take the time to properly cleanse them, the results can be astounding! When should you cleanse a gemstone? Remember that gemstones in stores have absorbed many people’s energies; it’s important to do a cleansing as soon as you bring your new treasure home. With gemstones that you’re wearing during the day, cleanse them in the evening. I often wear certain therapeutic necklaces around the clock for several days but I always remove them for about an hour in the evening to cleanse them. Gemstones that sit in your home also need cleansing. This is particularly true for stones that are placed near your computer or other strong electromagnetic fields – cleanse these once a week. I also have bowls of tumbled “touchstones” in a few places around our home. Because these tend to be touched more often, I usually cleanse them once a week. If you’re using a gemstone to do a particular treatment, for example to calm your headache, the gem should be cleansed immediately after the treatment. There are many cleansing techniques. I recommend that you try several and find what works best for you. Holding your gemstone under cool running water is a simple and effective way to cleanse. Tap water works fine but if you have access to clean running spring water, this also recharges your gems with living energy. Use a colander to cleanse many stones together, however if a gem is particularly fragile, wash it separately. Hold the gems under a stream of running water for about three minutes. The following gems can be damaged by water so use another cleansing technique for them: selenite, halite, malachite, lapis lazuli, sulphur, amber, sodalite, fluorite and rhodochrosite.

your gems. Then rinse them with clear running water to remove soap residue. For crystals that are physically dirty (wearing a necklace of gemstone beads will become dirty with our body oils) but don’t like to be washed with water, use alcohol swabs. Alcohol swabs can be purchased at any drugstore and all gemstones respond well to being stroked clean with an alcohol swab. If a gemstone doesn’t have any physical grime on it, use one of the following methods. You can create your own gemstone clearing spray. Fill a blue or brown glass spray bottle with vodka and add nine drops of organic lavender essential oil and three drops of frankincense essential oil (you can replace frankincense oil with organic tea tree oil). Shake the bottle and spray a few pumps upwards into the air over the gems – the spray will rain down like a shower onto the gems. Another method is to light a sage smudge and hold each gemstone in the smoke, letting the smudge wash the gem.

Eté - Summer © Mireille Cloutier

by Skye MacLachlan Gemstone Therapist/Teacher

For heavy duty cleansing (if a gem hasn’t been cleansed for quite some time and has a sticky feel to it or if it has been near electromagnetic fields), bury your gem in sea salt or the earth. Never use this method for softer gems that might get scratched. Use your intuition or a pendulum to determine how long to leave the gems buried.

Gemstones quite naturally work to bring us and our environments into balance. If the crystals are holding onto negative energies, they won’t be able to do their jobs. Once you get into the habit of cleansing your gemstones, you’ll notice a far greater benefit from their positive healing vibrations. Beginning in October 2018, Skye will be teaching The Crystalline Gemstone Therapist Program and Tarot Program at Northern Star College of Mystical Studies, where she teaches/practices Feng Shui, Tarot and Dreamwork. The power of your heart by Arlene Olson Licensed HeartMath Coach Your heart is highly intelligent with a brain and memory of its own. In fact, your heart is the most intelligent organ in your body. According to research, the heart is up to six times more intelligent than the mind and sends six times more information to the brain than the brain sends to the heart. We were taught differently, but now we have scientific proof that the heart is the one really in control of your life. For over 20 years, I spent a lot of my time with Native Aboriginals. When I was in the sweat lodges, pipe ceremonies, and fasting and dancing in the sacred Sundance arbor, the levels of love that I was feeling (inside and all around) were beyond description. I was connecting to a higher form of love that most people don’t even know exists. The intensity of love I was feeling was so astonishing that I knew I wanted to share it with as many people as I could. It was for that reason I later became a Licensed HeartMath Coach. I chose the HeartMath Institute for training because it was backed by 27 years of research and could validate the astounding things I had experienced in regards to the heart. When you are connected to the heart and consistently devoted, there are doors that open up from the heavens (high intelligence and higher form of love) and it moves things. It supports you and guides you. She Seeks Truth © Jenny McConnell — www.artoftruth.biz

The heart is so electric and we need to focus more on building that electricity because that is what leads you into higher intelligence and realms of love that can not be described. There are five levels that the heart must go through to evolve to the highest level of consciousness, true unconditional purity. Most human beings are still in the first level where they are confused or numbed out. As a HeartMath Coach, I assist people to get in touch with the inner self and raise their vibration to experience higher levels of love. We each know the power of love. Love is the greatest medicine of life and in all the universe. It is the greatest comforter and healer there ever was and ever will be and it creates the greatest healing balm the human spirit will ever experience. The human spirit is constantly searching for this healing balm and for more of it. It is an inherent need that every human being has. On our deeper levels, we each know this. It is the world that takes us away from connecting to what we need the most and that is why we so often look in the wrong places and

outside ourselves for it. I teach clients how to anchor into their heart. Heart coherence is a physiological state brought about with the activation of a positive feeling and breathing techniques, where your physiology and all systems come into harmony and optimal functions (mentally, www.MosaicMagazine.ca

emotionally, physically and spiritually). The more this is practiced, the greater are the benefits. Your heart is your biological oscillator that determines the wellness or stress levels of your brain waves, respiratory system, digestive system, emotional electromagnetic frequencies, autonomic nervous system and hormones. It therefore determines the direction that the matters of your heart and life unfold. Your heart surprisingly is the leader of every part of your life and it is all based upon the quantity of positive feelings. There are few things more powerful than high heart coherence. Heart coherence opens a door (via your heart) that brings you silent insights from a higher intelligence, which guides and helps you in making decisions and achieving your goals – relationships, health, career, family and more. Your heart is at the center of your being. According to scientific research, your heart is like your personal grandfather clock placed in a room of many clocks to synchronize them. Similarly your heart, based upon the quality of your feelings, determines the wellness or lack of wellness of all the other systems of your being and body. I know by experience and testimonies from clients that what you choose to feel - or can learn to feel - about a thing, situation or person, determines what unfolds in the processes and challenges of your life. “Change your feelings, change your life.” We are more “feeling” beings than “thinking” beings and feelings are more powerful than thoughts. This is scientifically

When you are stressed, the heart sends an incoherent signal to the brain. The brain constricts making it difficult to think clearly and see a way out towards a resolution. But, the moment we actively practice positive feelings and create heart coherence – even a little bit - the heart helps us by nudging the brain into coherence, which facilitates greater clarity of mind and insights coming to us. Stress is on the rise but with professional training and coaching it can be reduced by up to 50% within an eight week period. More benefits include: less fatigue, less chronic pain, less panic attacks and anxiety, improved sleep, less mood swings, emotional composure, increased clarity and insights, increased motivation, productive decision making, enhanced memory and learning abilities, increased ability to make positive change and anchor that change in, improved performance all around and so much more. Training with a Licensed HeartMath Coach is necessary to effectively learn how to create new neural pathways to the subconscious mind. Training with me will give you added skills, tools and much greater understanding for the art of building a strong baseline, resilience, and an effectiveness that is seldom learned on one’s own. I provide (in my training and coaching) tools for you to use to develop feelings awareness - the inner life that is actually going on at numbed out deeper levels. This training is vital to raising the heart’s vibration and creating improved wellness and well-being.

validated. When you consistently activate positive feelings in alignment with your heart, you will have many times more creative power and you will find that you navigate through life’s changes with much greater ease, efficiency and success.

The incorporation of heart coherence practice into my lifestyle has helped me in multiple ways that I cannot even cover here - consistent positive change from within myself, immune system improvement by 80%, discovery of numbed out, deep, longstanding feelings that originated in childhood and more.

One can become trained to where you are naturally in a state of heart coherence most of the time and finely tuned to your inner life and feelings. From this place, you can easily connect to your heart’s wise higher intelligence, intuitive insights and powers (our true and original self) more often.

If you would like to overcome obstacles, gain more comfort, balance and ease in your life, improve any area of your life, I can help in multiple ways with heart coherence training and 30 years of coaching, teaching and certifications.

It is not commonly known that we each have a higher heart and a higher brain. The Eastern religions have taught this wisdom for thousands of years. We can connect to our higher minds via the higher heart through consistent daily practice of heart coherence and anchoring it in.

Steve Jobs spoke about the wisdom of the heart to the world, for he knew the power of the heart. He said:

“Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” Your heart has the answers to anything

you desire to know and will guide you in any area you wish to receive help, insight and direction if you are giving it positive feelings and asking for that guidance and help.

With training and consistent practice, we and the heart (together) can improve our physiological functions, electromagnetic frequencies, and our life and experience of it. “As we help the heart by shifting to positive feelings,

the heart helps us.”

Self-compassion through Rosen Method by Cinnamon Cranston Certified Rosen Method Bodywork Practitioner What does it mean to have self-compassion? For me selfcompassion occurs any time I choose to act with kindness, love, gentleness or sensitivity towards myself.

myself previously hidden from my consciousness (such as unmet needs, fear, anger and rage, deep sadness, disgust as well as my natural impulses for joy, vitality and selfexpression, and a deep connection to universal love) that all had to be suppressed within my body in order to exist in the circumstances I was living in at the time.

It wasn’t until I discovered Rosen Method Bodywork (RMB) in 2008 that I learned how this critical voice inside me came to be in the first place. After attending Rosen Method Intensives and receiving RMB sessions I began to discern that this voice inside was a necessary aspect of my survival learned early on in life when I did not have the power to change my circumstances. By taking on the blame for my own suffering I was attempting to take control of my experience, manage it and ultimately survive it. Much to my surprise my body held the clues to my hidden past. Rosen Method Bodywork uses a listening touch, both present and responsive, along with affirmative words to invite deep relaxation and self-awareness in the body. With increased embodied awareness people begin to develop the capacity to integrate past experiences more fully and therefore gain a greater awareness of themselves in the present moment and openness to the possibilities of well-being.

Crouching Faerie © Janice Blaine

This sounds simple but it has taken the greater part of my life to learn. Of course I understood the idea of compassion early on in my healing journey, however, the act of self-compassion was much harder for me to actualize than I hoped it would be. I was always at battle with the stern, driven and critical voice within me that wanted to be in charge, pushing me forward in an endless pursuit to fix whatever was wrong and there was always something wrong!

Through the support of the Rosen Method practitioner or teacher, I was able to integrate these hidden aspects of my past experiences and release the belief I had as a child of thinking I was responsible for the circumstances I was in. I also came to accept that I was naturally dependent upon my parents for my physical and emotional needs, and that I was absolutely powerless over the imperfect parenting I received and the traumatic circumstances I was born into.

By fully feeling and accepting my past experiences with the supportive and loving presence of a RMB practitioner, I have developed the capacity to trust my body to move me toward selfcompassion and feelings of love, safety and infinite value. Although I am now a practitioner in the work myself I still continue to receive sessions, ever expanding more into the person I truly am. The Rosen Method practitioner has been trained to contact and connect with people’s conscious awareness of themselves and encourages their awareness of any holding patterns that are unconsciously held in their body. The practitioner follows subtle changes in the client’s breath and nervous system, as well as muscle and fluid movement, supporting the possibility of shifts and changes. These subtle changes can be a doorway into the recovery of a person’s capacity to experience themselves for who they truly are. What Rosen Method helped me remember was the truth of my lived experience. I have come to know aspects of

An acne blessing It’s the persistence of the human spirit that has consistently triumphed over unseemly odds, stimulating ingenuity and discovery, responsible for significant advancements, invention and achievement. This is true of the creative pioneering mind of the young biochemist and botanist, Dr. Danné Montique King. As a young man King suffered inflicting debilitating acne. More than the physical scarring that resulted from the subsurface infection pustules, the psychological impact and withdrawal from society was most painful for him. The ravages of his acne impediment served as a powerful motivation for him to understand, research, experiment and then develop a healing solution to a most demeaning of diseases. Unfortunately many common treatments suppress the active factors involved (in the destructive spreading process of acne) while attempting to improve the visual appearance of the skin. This can produce a false expectation of success. In reality, by driving the acne insult deeper into the skin, a more sinister condition is created. The body’s defense responses attempt to wall off the infective intrusions leading to a more complicated cystic condition. King understood this dilemma while persisting to solve the mystery, utilizing the body’s natural healing process. Skin cells accept and react to body chemistry they recognize, while true healing is feasible when working “with” rather than “on” the skin. The most advanced automobile in the world will consistently perform better when utilizing fuel for which it was designed. This is also true for the human body. The most basic requirement for optimal physical performance is the nutritional quality of our fuel (food) supply. Diet and nutrition play an important role in our overall health. However, numerous influences can affect our performance including hormones, stress, habits, environment and so on. In other words “life can get in the way of living.”

answer. Thus the genesis of the DMK Transdermal Paramedical Skin Revision System was conceived. In a world of unintended consequences, King soon realized that DMK’s non-invasive, botanical, enzyme based formulations for treating acne disease were also applicable to other skin conditions. Over time, additional research and development opened doors to advanced DMK treatment protocols for aging skin, hyper pigmentation, scarring, psoriasis, rosacea, eczema, sun damage and so on.

Green Lake © Carol Collin — www.gypsyart.me

by Laurena Clark

The success of DMK is its philosophy of working “with” the body’s inherent cycles, providing natural resources required thus promoting healthy skin development. You can create the life you want At this stage of my life it’s very important to me to have a career where I help others. A Myers Briggs test identified me as an Advocate INFJ, making up less than 1% of the population. An Advocate’s primary purpose is to help others use their imagination and creativity to take concrete steps to realize goals. My choice for this part of my life journey is totally congruent with my personality. I work with individuals and small business owners from all walks of life. We supply a variety of natural wellness products (listed below) to those of you who want to improve your health and financial situation. MAGNESIUM – An estimated 80% of you lack this vital mineral. Researchers have found that magnesium is important to protect the aging brain’s structure and function. Easily attained magnesium chloride flakes (such as those from the Dead Sea) still have chemicals and raw sewage dumped in them with measurable toxin levels. Our Magnesium Chloride Bath Flakes contain an unequaled 47% pure magnesium chloride. Treatment professionals can earn extra income (and help their clients) by carrying bath flakes or adding them to a pedicure soak. JUUVA WELLNESS – Surprisingly, 95% of you do not get adequate nutrition from the food you eat and over 20,000 medical journals demonstrate the benefits of nutritional supplements. Cutting-edge nutritional supplements are key in order to help your cells absorb nutrients and strengthen your immune system. They help to fend off infections, viruses and destroy bacteria. This company offers the strongest scientifically proven antioxidant (Galaxy) and whole-food nutrition supplement (Live) not found anywhere else in the marketplace.

Juuva Wellness also offers a hemp supplement, which contains only CBD’s of the hemp plant. NutraHG is a restorative “super green” that has hemp and chlorophyll. CBD’s help the receptors in your body (including energy, depression, sleep, etc.). A hemp plant has two elements to it: CBD and THC. The THC is what makes you “high” and CBD does not. It restores your health because it helps you sleep better, as well as helps you deal with anxiety. Chlorophyll is important to help to eliminate toxics. FAR INFRARED THERAPY PRODUCTS – A portable infrared sauna or the Sky Eye lamp can help to remove toxins, heal wounds, relieve pain, lose weight and lower blood pressure. These products are named the best on the market by professionals and individuals. They heat in two minutes and last for over 10 years of professional use, compared to the average two years of a TDP lamp and bargain saunas. COLON HYDROTHERAPY SPECULUM KITS – We offer great prices for therapists and these Health Canada approved disposable speculums can help you earn more per treatment. PAPERWORK – When you are busy with the daily operations of your business, paperwork takes a back seat, increasing your stress. We focus on home and small business owners, helping you to organize your paperwork and create procedures you can continue yourself (or we can continue monthly if you prefer).

I am so fortunate and thankful to work with amazing people, to help you grow and make a difference in your health and financial well-being. Barbara is the owner of Your Life Create It and continues her education for wellness products and services. For you to function at your best you need to get enough sleep and have the energy to focus on the tasks at hand. If you don’t, you won’t perform your best work. Juuva Wellness offers 100% natural NO crash energy products (Rejuv and Zing), which can restore mental focus and boost energy. Get energized without experiencing a caffeine/sugar “crash.”

Telling your hero’s story We are all the hero in our own story. Each step we take in life leads us towards a goal, known or unknown. And yet, we never go there alone for many heroes have travelled the path before us. Ritual ceremony is one way to honor “Rites of Passage” – when our life transitions from one status to another, from one pathway to the new. Joseph Campbell wrote about the mythical hero and how that story is what makes life’s passage so remarkable. In his text, The Hero with a Thousand Faces, (New World Library, 2008) he describes the journey of the hero that exists across cultures, societies and time. The hero is first called to undertake an adventure. Each of us can recall a time in life when we felt called to act, to take matters in our own hands, or to depart from the usual path. Sometimes we stumble on the call, not quite knowing what we are getting into. Other times, we deliberately prepare ourselves and set out on the path. Imagine the difference between a 17-yearold excited to finish high school to attend university compared to a 45-year-old woman who starts a degree to change her life. Both are exciting calls to act, yet one is a direct path while the other a right-angle turn. Often the call to adventure produces feelings of anxiety or anticipation. Sometimes the hero refuses the call… then life carries on as it always had. But at those amazing moments when the hero accepts the call and crosses the threshold to adventure, the story truly gains momentum. The hero then faces a series of trials that serves to build and grow character. We, too, face challenges whenever we take the risk of adventure. We question our ability and our knowledge. Are we brave enough for this?

Cycle Celebrant takes the hero through the phases of departure, initiation and return (in a symbolic sense) to relay the story of the adventure to the guest witnesses. Sometimes the ceremony itself is the Rite of Passage as in a wedding. Yet, in many cases, the ceremony is the final public acknowledgement of a Rite of Passage that has already taken place. Consider the transition from maidenhood to motherhood. We often celebrate the arrival of the child, yet for the woman the transformation began from the moment of deciding to have a child, to conception and through the entire pregnancy. A “Sustenance Ceremony” at any point in that path of a year or more can support any woman on her journey. Warrior Princess © Heather Brewster — www.heatherbrewster.com

memories as your legacy.

Even at the end of life we have a story to share with those who loved us. A “Celebration of Life Ceremony” can include a professionally written memorial created from your own thoughts and memories. Often children are asked to remember what was important to a parent, or to recall favorite moments in their life. Yet, they may have missed some of the most blissful moments for that parent. Taking ownership of the tale of your own hero’s journey is a way to bring personalization and create long term family

Campbell tells us that anybody can respond to the hero’s call. Everyone has the potential to say “yes” to their own adventure and celebrate that with ritual ceremony that honors their Rite of Passage. The world needs more heroes and we all need to celebrate our personal heroics more often. Karen (Kestrel) is certified through the Celebrant Foundation & Institute for Ceremonies Across the Life Cycle and Weddings. She is an ordained reverend of the Canadian International Metaphysical Ministry and offers decades of experience in ritual research and development. Contact: TidalCeremonies@KestrelsNest.ca Note: This information is for educational purposes only. Thoroughly research all topics for yourself.

However, it is when we stop thinking only of ourselves and our self-preservation that we experience the heroic “transformation of consciousness” that is central to all our myths. Ultimately, the hero returns home and crosses the threshold back to the real world… eager to share tales of the knowledge that he/she gained. A well-crafted ceremony celebrates the hero and reminds the witnesses to the journey of what it has taken to reach the point where a Rite of Passage is important. The Lifewww.MosaicMagazine.ca

bring forth messages from the infinite father God (Papa Asun), the ascended and angelic hosts (like Archangel Michael and Master Germain) and great cosmic beings (like Jesus and Lord Buddha). These Beings are eager to engage with us and bring more light and love into the world.

“What brought you here?” This is a favorite question students ask each other at the Radiant Rose Academy’s frequent classes in Vancouver. One student (a banker) heard the word “Akasha” over and over again in a dream and felt called to move from his home in Australia to Vancouver to connect more deeply with Akasha. Another Australian (who has held various entry-level jobs and struggled as a young adult), desired to understand her purpose in life, create abundance and find the greater love missing in her life. A human rights lawyer who spent a decade in Afghanistan (challenged by major world religions focus on sin and retribution, and their views on women and girls) sought healing for herself and humankind. Radiant Rose students come from all over the world, all walks of life and for all reasons. One thing they have in common is a strong attraction to the Divine Mother and all She offers. So, who is this mother of all mothers - the Infinite Mother God? Mother Akasha! A great cosmic being, beloved Mother Akasha embodies love, the universal heart, the divine feminine principle, and the over soul. Her love is deep and abiding, unconditional and comforting - heavenly divine! Like a magnet, this love magically draws you to Her and is capable of nurturing and fulfilling all that you dare to dream.

Academy classes and events are held across Canada and the U.S. They cover a wide array of topics, including fundamental spiritual truths, the sacred fire, the flower of life blue print and the ancient art of decreeing. Living the Dream Class, for example, provides practical applications for everyday life, such as manifesting abundance (supply, health and well-being, relationships and opportunities), letting go of fears and embracing peace. The Tree of Life Class teaches about the bigger questions of life: Who and what am I? Where did I come from? Why am I here? What’s my purpose, destiny and divine plan?

The Masters Class deepens our relationship with ascended and angelic beings through their sharing and gifts. Further, under Excalibur’s leadership, students come together remotely from around the globe every two weeks to help our planet and people everywhere through the art of decreeing. Whether you desire to go the distance to fulfill your soul’s evolution, discover your service to life or live every day with greater ease, joy and grace, the Radiant Rose Academy warmly welcomes you! The following is a testimonial of gratitude: “The Radiant Rose Academy has lovingly helped me to find my place in the world. I now understand my life’s purpose. I am receiving the gifts, tools and trainings needed to carry out my purpose and I have created a new family that not only understands me but also supports my efforts. I am in deep gratitude.” JB Radiant Rose Academy of Mystical Arts and Sciences is located at 4388 W - 10th Avenue, Vancouver, BC. Since its founding in 1994, the Radiant Rose Academy’s teachings speak to the path of the heart and soul. They guide students in undoing all misperceptions about love, God and a false sense of self that has covered over the true Divine Self. It is through the power of love and the grace of the Mother’s presence that we can be restored to oneness. Usa and Excalibur transmit Mother Akasha’s messages. When we gather “all of us” “Most of us are being held together by our ‘woundedness’ so when healing starts it can feel quite chaotic.” Pete Bernard, Algonquin Medicine Man

“The Gathering Ceremony” in Spiritual Healing and Energy Medicine Therapy (SHEM) is a powerful way to work on your wounded issues in a safe environment. It will help to “gather all of you up” (the parts of yourself that have become scattered, disorganized or split off) and reorganize you into a healed outcome, issue by issue, no matter where you are at in your healing journey. There are parts of ourselves that we sent away at a time of trauma, in order to hold them safe, unharmed and unwounded. These fragments can come back to us now that we are open to healing our “woundedness,” as they are our trusted allies, our best helpers. These pieces (of you) knew you before you were wounded and still know you best. They are just waiting patiently for you to gather them up – to “gather all of you up.” They can “re-inform” you, imprint you in a positive way with what can be true for you now instead of running old programming. These parts can be in the form of soul parts, power animals, higher self and/or divine aspect. They can also be some very real truths and new awareness around original wounds and old wounded agreements that you are still living by that are no longer needed or necessary in present day.

Also imbedded within are old agreements you made (consciously or non-consciously) pertaining to that original wound that keep reinforcing your “woundedness,” issue and limiting beliefs. Remember, one of the major wounds in childhood occurs when we are not being seen and/or heard. Did you know that even the things we say become truth? The non-conscious hears you say it, so believes it to be true as it has no filter. Or possibly someone else voiced it as you can’t “unhear” something once you’ve heard it. Your power animal comes to you in this journey. It is a soul part that is returning to you, not an animal totem. It may not be the one you want but it is the one that will help you the most right now with your specific issue. Hallie, age 45, wanted to heal the “not feeling worthy of love” issue that has played in all the relationships in her life. In “The Gathering Ceremony” the original wound was her mother not being loving toward her in childhood. She believed this to be her fault and there were feelings of powerlessness too. The ceremony healed the original wound, the old agreement and she fully merged with her newly found, very heartfelt feeling of “I am worthy of love.” Her power animal was a dragon which gave her an immense feeling of wisdom and power. She spent a week away with her mother shortly after this and she reported: “I felt this sense of power with no drama with my mother that I never experienced before.” Angel Feather © Lise Champagne —

Healing is completed in the sacredness of multiple medicine wheels in this ceremonial journey. You will become aware of how it is still playing out in your life in many ways even though it is very old. And it can be healed in all timelines not just what you remember. www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Facing a challenging economy by Abe Brown Certified Master Coach Trainer A lot of businesses are struggling right now. Even if the economy seems a little more solid, risks continue to abound and the landscape is always shifting. As a coach, I hear questions like these daily: “Do you have any solid coaching advice for managing the risks, getting through the ‘lows’ and moving my business upward?”

2. Be Consistent – Repetition works. Potential clients must see your brand dozens of times. That’s why companies advertise. They understand repetition. 3. Be Seen as an Expert - If you establish yourself as an expert in your field, you will not need to find your clients, they’ll find you. Find the one, two or three specific areas where you can excel. Focus on being seen as an expert in those areas. Reach out with blogging, speaking, writing, presenting, sharing, connecting and advertising. Be seen as an expert. Michael Eisner, the CEO of Disney, said: “A brand is a living entity - and it is enriched or undermined cumulatively over time, the product of a thousand small gestures.”

What is the main difference between today and 20 years ago? It’s the fact that there are literally millions of voices, and millions of choices. Twenty years ago, the voices were limited and the choices were even more confined. So, as businesses, how do we stand out? We stand out by focusing on building our “Brand Essence.” A brand is the unique and distinctive visual, emotional and cultural image that you associate with a company or product.

Today, we are facing a challenging economy. In the spring, a farmer has to till the soil, deal with the weeds and begin planting the seed, while cultivating and waiting for a harvest which comes later. In the same way, businesses need to work with diligence in the low end of the business cycle so that they reap a harvest later.

1. Be Distinctive – Find a couple of ways to enhance your brand tangibly… and focus there. Unless your business has one or two “big ideas,” it will pass like a ship in the night.

What is your personal brand? As a leader, what do you want to be known for? You can’t be known for everything, so be clear on what you want to be known for.

In this challenging time, like the farmer, diligently work the soil by building your brand. The harvest will absolutely come. We need to spend time celebrating our uniqueness – our own voice. Your voice consists of the problems you’re solving, the questions you’re answering, the solutions you’re providing and the wounds you’re healing. It incorporates your unique communication style and flavor. Your brand is the entire experience customers have with you. It’s what you stand for, a commitment you make and your personality. And while it includes your logo and colors, those are only the creative components of your brand that may change from year to year. Your brand lives in every interaction with clients. Here are three ways you can enhance the essence of your brand:

Your body is engineered to heal Those unpleasant symptoms that your body springs upon you! What should you do? The first step is to recognize that symptoms are often signs that your body is trying to heal itself. An example is inflammation at the site of a cut. That is an indication of your body bringing in new blood that is loaded with repair material such as platelets, white blood cells and proteins so that it can fix the injury. This increase of blood in the area will also flush out toxins and carry damaged cells away to allow your skin to heal smoothly. For this reason, a cold compress on an injury is not always a good idea because it works against the body’s natural repair mechanism. Instead, allowing the inflammation to do its job usually works much better. Inflammation deeper in your body is much the same. Taking anti-inflammatory drugs will suppress the inflammation. However, if the cause of the inflammation is still present, your body will continue to generate this inflammation and you will need to rely on anti-inflammatory drugs forever or until you find the underlying cause and take care of it. Your body is smart, constantly doing its best to heal and repair itself. Chronic disease occurs when your body is unsuccessful in its attempt to heal itself. This is often due to three things: an abundance of something harmful (toxins, virus, bad bacteria, fungus), a lack of something essential (minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, good bacteria) or an issue with your body’s energy system that prevents its natural repair system from working. While dealing with health challenges can be done in many ways, improving the energy flow in every part of your body is where I see the most significant improvements.

health challenge starts soon after an event that involves strong emotions. Negative emotions (sadness, grief, fear, sense of betrayal, anger, resentment, loss) attached to events build up in the body and often impede energy flow. The locations where the energy does not flow with ease are the locations where dis-ease develops. In my practice, I use neurolinguistic programming (NLP) to gently shift your perception of the event to decrease the emotional charge and let your body get on with the job of healing itself. Helping you heal yourself requires me to be a good detective. When we find the cause of the problem together, the solution becomes evident and healing can finally start. I ensure that energy flows easily in every part of your body so that healing can take place.

Vitality, chakras, qi, prana and life force are all terms that various cultures and traditions use to describe this energy we call life. Understanding this energy is as important as, if not more important than, simply focusing on the physical body. Disease often starts with an energy disturbance and its effects on the physical body is the end result.

The medical system focuses mainly on the physical body, looking at symptoms like they are the bad guys and giving chemical drugs to suppress them. The reality is that those symptoms are your best allies. They are signs of your body working at repairing, fixing and cleaning. First understanding what is going on and why the body is producing those symptoms, and then fixing the cause, will make the symptoms disappear. With close to 40 years in the health field, Louise Grenier, BSc. Nursing, uses Homeopathy/Heilkunst, Nutrition, EFT, advanced Neuro-Linguistic Programming, and more to help clients. Healing occurs when the body’s energy flows easily in every body part, organ and gland. Your body is engineered to heal. Is Shamanism a fit for you? by Sarah Salter-Kelly Shaman In this day and age we are inundated with infinite philosophies, practices and beliefs on spiritual healing. It can be difficult to sift through the shiny surfaces to find the integrity of the bones behind the ideas, and in that assessment, recognize what is or is not a fit for us.

to the necessary deaths that are a part of the cycle; this honors and makes room for grief in our lives. In the winter we lose ourselves in the dark – in the void of the Great Mother – right before we awaken to the new dream and we begin all over again. 3) Lunar Cycle – The moon bares the tidings of the Sacred Feminine, often referred to as Grandmother or Mother,

This can be particularly tricky when we are checking out spiritual traditions – for on one hand, we are hungry for a sense of spirit and connection, which makes us vulnerable and eager to find the “right” one. On the other hand, we have been collectively wounded from the control and oppression of organized religion and might feel fed up with the whole thing. My answer (to the confusion in the particular field of Shamanism) is to offer clarity wherever possible as to how it may be of benefit to those who are attracted to its teachings. In this way you can make a clear choice as to whether or not this is a path that feels right for you. Let’s start off with 13 basic principles. 1) Authority, Autonomy and Authenticity - The three “A’s” of a healthy shamanic practice. Shamanism is a self-revelatory experience, which means you surmise for yourself what the messages you receive from Spirit mean and use these revelations to bring meaning, healing and value into your life. As your relationship to Spirit grows (by Spirit I mean your helping spirits, higher self, ancestors or Source) this connection feeds the authentic expression of your soul and supports you in claiming your purpose. One of the most commonly used tools to facilitate this is the “Shamanic Journey” – a led meditation, using the drum or other sound tools, which creates a trance like state and guides you into a space of communion with Spirit. 2) Four-Directions, Sun Cycle Teachings – Shamanism is all about relationship, so we begin with our understanding of the four directions and how we are impacted by the cycles of the year. Each direction relates to the life/death/ rebirth teachings that help us to deepen our humanity by understanding the cycles of our own journey (be that through the day, a year or a lifetime). As we attune to the right timing for new growth in our lives, we become conscious of what that growth needs (to form in a healthy way through its life cycle) and in time to harvest what we have planted. Sometimes we plant too much and must reckon with the truth that we cannot manage it all – a lesson I have learned many times myself. With practice we become gracious in celebrating what we have created. In the fall we learn to let go, surrendering

Maiden and Crone. The new moon holds the maiden energy of possibility, the full moon is our mother (rich with nourishment for our spirit) and the waning moon becomes the crone, our elder. Our blood follows the cycles of the moon, often bleeding at the full and ovulating at the new. 4) Earth, Water, Air and Fire – These guys are called the first ancestors for they were here long before humans and it is known that they are the building blocks for all of creation. Earth gives us the foundation that we need to build a healthy life and relates to our physical body. It is all about structure and presence asking us to slow down and allow for the time needed to create strong supports. Water brings forth nourishment and cleansing for a healthy emotional body – thus our relationship to this element is connected to any repressed grief or trauma www.MosaicMagazine.ca

and may be supportive in helping us heal. Air is our mental body, be that the energy in our mind or how we articulate it with our voice. It teaches us to lighten up and go where the wind blows us. Finally fire is our spiritual body, bearing the medicine of transformation as it carries our prayers to Spirit. It helps us to embody our power, form a healthy relationship with anger and engage our capacity to live with purpose/passion. 5) Co-Creation, How Does God Fit In? Known by many names (Creator, Source, Great Spirit, Great Mystery) and believed to be the nameless one, God is experienced as the creative divine force within everything. This means this vital force is within, and the more you make room for it - by listening and honoring its intelligence - the more you will manifest love and joy in the day to day. 6) Mother Earth - Often called Pachamama, Gia or Great Mother, it is she who provides fodder for our body, mind and spirit, guiding us to place our roots into the spaces and places that offer sustenance. She reminds us that turning inwards into the dark is an essential part of life not to be feared. She teaches us that it is safe to be in our bodies and love ourselves for all our cracks and crannies, exactly as we are. 7) Sacred Reciprocity – There is a natural flow of giving and receiving encoded into all life on this planet. Think of your breath - you breathe in the oxygen created by the trees and exhale carbon dioxide, which the trees in turn need to breathe. In Shamanism it is essential to be conscious of all the ways you are fed and supported by the world around you and to use that awareness to give back or give thanks.

council of these helping spirits and ancestors available to guide our choices and mentor our decisions. Cultivating a tangible relationship with them is done in a variety of ways such as: shamanic journeys, time outside on the land, meditation and paying attention to the signs or omens that show up in your day to day life. 10) Ceremony/Ritual - Ceremony has a variation of purposes and intent, with one thing common in each - to connect with Source and the highest aspect of you. This generally includes prayer, smudging, creation of sacred space and a process that helps you to move out of your head into your heart. 11) Sustainability - This path fosters a healthy relationship with land and community by generating the principle that everything you need is already here. This encourages you to look within yourself to find answers, be that for personal issues, community or environmental. If we believe everything we need is present we find the courage to look at solutions from a different point of view; we also get the job done. 12) We Are All Related - All of us are one organism. Yes we have our unique multifaceted spirit AND simultaneously we are all one. This is a paradox that sages have puzzled over for millennia. This principle reminds us that everything we do impacts the other, be this living creatures, land or water. All is imbued with spirit of equal importance and value; humans are by no means on top. Therefore the actions we take in our lives need to align with the integrity of this principle. A great example would be to be mindful of where you buy your food, or to examine what the “cost” is of the fuel we use. 13) Medicine Making – We cannot change the struggles that have shown up in our life. We can however transform our suffering into unique gifts, talents and purpose – this is the act of medicine making. 8) Micro/Macro - Our external experience is a reflection of our internal experience. Within our being lays a universe as marveling and awesome as the night sky – we are truly capable of miracles. Yet so often this is not what we are experiencing around us! Shamanism asks us to be accountable to ourselves, by taking full responsibility for our life’s experience, knowing that our power to create change starts within. 9) Helping Spirits/Ancestors - Helping spirits are power animals, mythical archetypes, demi gods/goddesses, angels and ancestors (to name a few). The next step by Catherine Potter Astrologer and Hypnotherapist It has been a long journey for the human species to get to the point in their evolution where in order to progress and thrive we must create gender equality. The movement towards equality has been going on for many generations and since the birth of the internet it has become easier to spread the idea “of” and hope “for” gender equality throughout the world.

Men are meant to take on whatever role that is best for them in a male way - it is in their bones. An example is all the men who have chosen to be “stay at home” fathers. A man needs to parent in a male way. If they try to parent like a woman it will weaken them. In the movement towards gender equality we want to offer our female and male children a future that nurtures and frees both sexes to grow into whatever roles best suit their skill sets. There are different stages of growth when any marginalized group seeks equality. Each stage is important and not everyone in that group will be at the same stage. Regarding gender equality, the masses are in another phase of “coming out of the closet.” In this stage all the dirty linen gets aired. All the abuse, shame, guilt, anger, judgement, feelings of inferiority/ superiority that sits there for both the victim and the perpetrator, gets aired out. For there to be a permanent change both perpetrators and victims have to free themselves. The Threads on the Coat That She Wears © Bernadette McCormack — www.bernadettemccormack.com

In order for this movement to become a permanent shift and not just a battle of the sexes, we have to recognize that gender equality isn’t only happening “to” nor is “about” just women. It is also happening for men. Both sexes are growing as we redefine and re-imagine male and female roles.

Women are meant to step into whatever role they choose in a female way - it is in their bones. In other words, if you are a female in any type of leadership role, lead like a woman. Trying to lead like a man weakens you.

When we eventually get to the point where we appreciate and respect two different ways of seeing, interpreting and creating the world, our potential will be unlimited. However, we need to understand that gender equality and equal rights doesn’t mean we are the same. Women and men have different strengths and ways of seeing the world.

22

Mosaic Magazine — Summer 2018

That shift occurs when enough individuals on the forefront of a movement (not everyone but enough people to reach critical mass) take the next step.

At this next step, both women and men acknowledge that harm was done. The individuals/groups put in place internal and external safeguards to ensure that the same harmful actions are not repeated. The choice then is to personally, and as a group, move forward in a more integrated and expanded way. www.MosaicMagazine.ca

When the aforementioned happens, a person (or a group of people) gets on with the business of creating their life and contributing to society defined by, but not limited by, their gender, skin color, sexual preference or culture. In other words, they belong to a particular group but live in an inclusive way. That is equality. We are getting there. If we look back, we will see we have made some progress. Here in Canada women weren’t allowed to vote until 1916 in the four western provinces, in 1917 in Ontario, in 1918 in Nova Scotia, in 1919 in New Brunswick, in 1922 in Prince Edward Island and in 1940 in Quebec (different time lines for First Nations women). It took a very long time to get to the point where Canadian woman could vote. What came out of that pivotal milestone is that, if today you polled younger woman and men, the majority would think it was ludicrous and unthinkable that less than 100 years ago, Canadian women weren’t allowed to vote. Whatever step we are at in the process of freeing ourselves, it is an important one. Both women and men have inherited and developed some positive and negative behaviors as a way of navigating and surviving in the world. Whether you are at the point of first recognizing what inequality is, or the next step of dealing with the emotions associated with inequality, or are feeling stuck and are unable to move forward because of unresolved emotions, there are people who can help with healing and clarifying. Collectively, we continue to take the necessary steps towards freeing ourselves from the dance of inferiority and superiority. If we use social media in a responsible way, to educate and not turn what is happening into the battle of the sexes, we can take a huge leap towards gender equality. Let’s continue to nourish the seeds that our ancestors planted so that one or two generations down the road, women and men will be shocked at how primitive we were as well as appreciative of our desire to grow and become more. The Fool takes you on a journey by Skye MacLachlan Tarot Teacher & Reader

lets us know that on this wild and precious journey called life, anything is possible.

The Fool reminds us that life is short and unpredictable; it is meant to be experienced fully!

Here is a beautiful and simple Fool meditation. Before beginning, choose a question that you’d like to receive guidance about. If there’s nothing specific that comes to you, a wonderful question is: “What does Spirit want me to know?”

In tarot, wise meaning is hidden in each image that forms the card. The Fool looks upward or skyward because his journey is focused on Spirit. If he were looking towards the ground, this would point to a practical earthly mission. Some would say the cliff represents our journey through the birth canal when we enter the physical world. It also symbolizes that life is filled with uncertainty and we must learn to trust that Spirit will provide a soft landing. The little white dog (white represents purity and innocence) dancing beside the Fool tells us that we are never alone; guidance is always available. The Fool packs lightly; he carries a small bundle over his shoulder. Isn’t it true that if we are weighed down by problems and too much stuff, we tend to miss out on the joyful adventures that Spirit offers? The Fool challenges us to be discerning about what truly holds meaning for us. “More” can often be a trap that holds us captive. Atop the Fool’s head is a beautiful red feather, the color of passion and aliveness. Because birds move between the heavens and the Earth, their feathers have always represented our spirit or a message from Spirit. As we learn to hear the voice of Spirit, even the most mundane experiences are imbued with passion and aliveness.

Now close your eyes, relax and silently repeat your question - like a mantra. Imagine that you are walking down an endless curving hallway and there are unique doors on each side. As you repeat your question, you will naturally be guided to a specific door. Open this door and go inside. Without judgement, accept what you see. The Fool © Radiant Rider-Waite® Tarot by US Games Systems 2003

On the Fool tarot card, looking upward, a young man/woman moves in an open and carefree manner towards a cliff. Beside him is his companion, a little white dog.

For some of you, a spirit helper might be there and you’ll have the wonderful opportunity to hear guidance and even ask questions. What if you open the door and see only complete darkness? This reveals that it’s not quite time to receive your answer. But continue to visit the hallway and one day you’ll find a powerful revelation awaits you.

What if you have a very simple “experience” in the room that you don’t necessarily understand? The simplest messages can be the most powerful. Reflect on what you’ve been shown and be open to receiving guidance about it. Now thank Spirit and close and door. On June 14 (6:30 – 8:30 p.m.) I’ll be offering a free tarot workshop that explores your current growth cycle based on your birthday information. If you’ve always been curious about tarot, email me at skyedreamhorse@shaw. ca to register. Skye has specialized in Feng Shui for the home and business for over 30 years. She teaches/practices Feng Shui, Gemstone Therapy, Tarot and Dreamwork at the Northern Star College of Mystical Studies in Edmonton. The white rose is held by the Fool on the left or heart side. Roses are unique in their beauty and amazing scent but they also have painful thorns. The rose shows us that every experience is valued by your heart; beauty and pain are both valuable teachers. The Fool is card number zero. Zero looks like an egg. Like the egg, the Fool’s journey is filled with new births and adventures. Zero is also nothing, the root word being “no thing.” We are reminded to let go of expectations, not only of things/people, but of the assumptions that we or others place upon us. Each moment is a new experience, an opportunity for transformation. Ultimately the Fool

Recovering from kidney disease by Veronica Kaye, PhD We are what we eat… Much like other families I knew, my family were heavy meat eaters. As a kid, our meals centered on the kind of meat we were having. For weekend morning breakfast, it was eggs and bacon with butter-slathered toast. We ate a lot of takeout (like Wendys’ $1.39 value menu, Chinese food, and every other burger, sub, and pizza joint you can possibly name); I had it all. For dessert and after soccer games, there was ice cream and blizzards from Dairy Queen. Because I was naturally thin, I was afforded the “luxury” of being able to eat all that I wanted to. So, I did. We rarely had fruit. I loved blueberries, but they were “too expensive” so we seldom got them. The only vegetables we ate were side dishes at supper time and I did love spinach microwaved (yes, microwaved with a paper towel on top!) loaded with lots of butter and salt. I also ate lima beans from a frozen bag of mixed vegetables… but only because my twin sister loved them (and I wanted to beat her to get more than she did!).

My doctor – the only one available in my city, and for reasons she would not tell me – referred me to a kidney specialist (nephrologist). The specialists kept telling me: “You could die from this ailment.” I stopped going and stopped listening to them because I found their bedside manner was less than ideal. I figured that whatever the problem was, it would clear away on its own after the baby. It didn’t. Three years later, when I got pregnant with my little girl, Charlotte, it was still there. My doctor sent me to the toprated specialist in the city (I got in right away) and she finally shed insight as to what was happening. I remember this conversation so well. It went like this: “You’re leaking protein in your urine,” she said. “And blood. A lot of it. That’s why you’re here. Because it’s so early on in the pregnancy, we suspect it’s an underlying condition that has been there all along.” Confused, I asked: “What does all of this mean? What is a lot of protein?” “Close to 600 grams,” she said. “Oh – what do normal people lose?” I couldn’t help but wonder. “Less than 2 grams,” she answered. I had what’s called IgA Nephropathy, or Berger’s Syndrome, where you lose a substantial amount of protein in your urine along with blood (which I couldn’t see). There are no visible symptoms. At my level, it meant medication, and after I was finished nursing, it meant a biopsy and ultimately a transplant or dialysis.

Although I had been a vegetarian for about a year, pregnancy cravings came on fast! All of a sudden, I resumed consuming meat (multiple times daily) and even adopted the Paleo diet. I figured it was justified. I was, after all, pregnant and it was my excuse to be able to eat anything I wanted – again. Besides, I had been raised to believe that protein is the cornerstone and foundation of good nutrition. www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Later in life, I pursued an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (Trent University, 2007) and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences (UPEI, 2013) where I specialized in coral reef molecular microbiology and natural products chemistry. During this time, I met my amazing husband and we decided to start a family together. The next month after we were married, I found out I was pregnant with my son, Avander.

I couldn’t live my life hooked up to a machine or be dependent on pills. I knew right then, right there, that I was going to fully recover and live my life to the fullest. I didn’t know how, but I was going to find a way. I refused to see myself as weak or that my body couldn’t heal itself. While the doctor said there is “no cure,” I told myself: “I am going to be the first person to fully heal from this.” continued on page 32

Painting for God by Jenny McConnell

buy my work and tears well up as they express how “spot on” the words are to their situation.

I’ve always been creative. I dabbled in art, dance and drama over the years but never took anything too seriously. My grandmother (on my mother’s side) was a wonderful artist and my father took up art in his retirement, but I studied to become a teacher and would only occasionally pick up a paint brush for fun, until 2014.

I am passionate about Jesus and the first image that came to my mind was “The Cross” based on John 3:16. All my paintings reflect a Bible verse and I love bringing scripture to life on canvas. I have had non-Christians buy my work and tell me how inspired they are to open the bible and read the scripture that the painting is based on.

I have two types of art themes. “She Art” is where I paint girls and a scripture is paraphrased on the canvas. The other type is on larger canvases and each piece uniquely reflects different scriptures I have chosen. I always write a “word” that goes with the bigger paintings and I ask God to help me write them. I feel honored when women

Her thoughts are lovely © Jenny McConnell

In that year I painted a few random pieces and then one day, I stood in front of a blank canvas and said: “What should I paint next?” and I heard God say in my mind: “Paint for Me.”

I have a heart for women and to see them experience freedom: physically, emotionally and spiritually. I love to pray and do art with or for them. I run art journaling workshops with ladies every Tuesday morning and once a month on a Saturday. Ladies have left a workshop saying they felt like they have just had open heart surgery. I am so grateful and humbled by the way God uses my art to touch them on a personal and deep level.

Come and enjoy a fun evening with Skye and learn all the details that make an abundance vase successful, including: the importance of the actual shape of the vase, the material a vase should be made of, cleansing and energizing the vase, various items to place within the vase, the proper placement of the vase in your home, activating the energy of the vase and how to bless the vase with luck each year. Skye will bring all of the items needed to make an abundance vase so you’ll have the opportunity to witness its creation. Recovering from kidney disease continued from page 25

The doctor did place me on the low antigen diet (no meat, dairy or gluten) and after following that I saw a 50% decrease in protein loss – down to around 300 mg – within only two weeks! There is scholarly evidence suggesting a low salt, low antigen diet can result in 50% reduction in symptoms (Ferri et al. 1993. Nephrol Dial Transplant. 8(11):1193-8). Also, following a gluten-free diet alone has been shown to heal a patient (See Koivuviita et al. 1990. NDT Plus 2(2): 161-163). Despite this, the specialist was surprised. She said she was: “expecting [my protein loss] to go up, not down” compared to my last pregnancy. But, during my last pregnancy I had eaten meat, dairy, gluten… everything! I was then able to take it much further than the doctor could advise me to do, using the 80/10/10 principle described by Dr. Douglas Graham, where 80% of your calories come from fruit and vegetables and the remainder come from fats and proteins (including healthy fats, like avocadoes and coconuts as well as nuts, seeds and beans). As you can see, this means proteins and fats are highly restricted, allowing your liver and kidneys to become unburdened. I also started a small regime of supplements: Vegan Omega-3s (much like the coral I studied, it is the algae found in salmon’s diet that is the true producer of omega3s, not the fish itself), Vegan B12, zinc picolinate and vitamin C. I had fresh celery juice in the morning to rebalance my hydrochloric acid levels followed by a smoothie with water, blueberries, three large handfuls of kale or spinach, a handful of pumpkin seeds for extra zinc and flavour, one banana, two small dates, all my supplements, along with Hawaiian spirulina and barley grass juice extract. Did I mention my three-year-old son eats an entire bowlful and asks for a refill?

32

Mosaic Magazine — Summer 2018

I fully believe I could have healed faster but I held onto rice (I love sushi!), potato chips, French fries and cooking in oil. I once “cheated” and ate a piece of steak with disastrous results; my protein loss went back to almost 600 mg and I lost blood again, which took several weeks to recover from. But once I implemented a regular juicing routine (which was later in the game for me) my healing accelerated rapidly. You can even make it taste really good! My daily juicing regime included kale along with apples, celery, ginger, sometimes watermelon rinds (an excellent source of chlorophyll), cabbage, carrots and cauliflower anything that was in my fridge and was raw. I’m here to tell you that you too can do this on your own, even if your other family members aren’t supporting you. You really, really can do this! I was the last person I thought would ever embrace eating like this. The information is out there and you can heal yourself. If your body can heal a wound after an injury, it stands to reason that your body is capable of healing your major organs given the right tools. Like the wound, it just takes time, and it doesn’t happen overnight. Even if you are on dialysis, your body WANTS to heal itself. Similarly, how is your body supposed to heal if it is overburdened with things it doesn’t need? At my latest blood test (March 2018), I am now losing only 87.5 mg of protein and counting, which is below the requirement of needing medication (which is prescribed at over 100 mg of protein loss). Healing oneself is possible. Veronica is a mother, wife, and regular person who committed to reversing a “chronic” disease. She can be reached at veronica.lynn.kaye@gmail.com or at empressnutrition.com Note: This information is for educational purposes only. It’s intended to supplement your current health program, not to replace the care of a licensed medical doctor. Thoroughly research all topics for yourself.

Con Amore

(Italian) With heart and soul

Judge what you want to learn Here’s the wonderful (and tragic) thing about selfawareness… you don’t know, until you know. BUT then once you know, well then, there’s no going back. I didn’t know I could sometimes be judgmental until I (alas) had the self-awareness that I could sometimes be judgmental. And then I learned the biggest lesson of all – judge only what you want to learn. There’s this joke about a guy who thought his parents were idiots when he was 18 years old, but when he turned 25, he couldn’t believe how much they learned. I think that sums it up for all of us, as life is this ever-lasting journey of learning AND, simultaneously, discovering that we didn’t know it all (when we thought we did). When we don’t know something, we don’t know it. When we hear a story about so and so, doing “this and that,” we just groan and make a bunch of judgement calls on them. In contrast, when we do know something, when we’ve lived through something, we understand it and then we therefore “get it” when someone else is going through something similar. We have compassion for the other person or the circumstances because we understand how complicated life can be (things aren’t always so black and white.) Certainly, life has a way (as we progress through the years) of showing us our flaws. I know that ALL my judgements of other people have always come back to bite me in the ass. Yes indeed, I have humbly noticed (before I marveled) that anything I have judged another for, I have then gotten to experience first hand myself - not as a punishment but as an AHA, as a learning. In fact, when I look back, everything I have ever judged someone for, has been my unknown invitation to the Universe (a powerful prayer) inadvertently asking for a lesson so I would understand whatever I had just judged. I’ve got so many examples but some of them are just so personal or extraordinarily stupid that I just don’t want to share them. But the biggest one that comes to mind that I can fess up to, especially as I’ve been writing about my relationship with her for so long, is my Mom. My Mom and I had this relationship that was so emotionally precarious… I don’t think she thought it was that. I mean, I don’t think she thought about it at all. She

was just living her life and I was just her daughter and it was all just ordinary. I didn’t want ordinary. I wanted something more profound; I wanted depth and meaning in everything. And she couldn’t do it – it just wasn’t who she was. Well now I have an 18-year-old daughter and, throughout her life (from the time she was very little), I’ve purposely delved deep into my soul to give her every bit of emotional depth I have to offer. But still, somehow, to her there are times when she thinks I fell short… when what I said was not enough and what I did was not enough – when I was not enough. Recklessly Loved © Jenny McConnell

And then I think about my Mom. I think about how I judged her – about how she didn’t give me what I needed. Well, now I have a daughter who has her moments of judging me (that I sometimes do not give her all that she needs) although I would have gorged on what I’ve given her. But for her, it was not enough at times. And that’s okay.

I see that we judge what we need to later live through. I know (because the Universe uses us all for lessons) that my dear, darling daughter is going to get her own profound lessons on mothering (just as I did). One day when she is a Mom, she’s going to see how complex it is, and even if it’s only for one small moment, on one dreary day, she’s going to have an AHA about her judgments about my mothering and I’m going to smile about it (from wherever I am). And that is so okay with me because we are all here to learn. A teacher recently told me that people who are the most judgmental are those with younger souls. That made so much sense to me because it is age and living through many life experiences that give us wisdom and compassion. Young souls are eager and idealistic (right and wrong are very black and white) while old souls are more understanding and appreciative of the overall value of every life experience. There is something to be learned in everything. I’m still learning all the time. We all are. But the fun thing now, for me, is to catch myself when I’m being judgmental. Because now I can play a game and ask myself curious questions… But my best one is still the simple “why?” Why am I being so judgmental about this? I think I was judgmental about my Mom because there was this hole in me about love, about whether I was worthy of love. And to be honest, I think that is always why we are judgmental of others – because they make us wonder if we are worthy of love. www.MosaicMagazine.ca
