Arunachal governor may be under Gorkhas demand indigenous status in Assam pressure from RSS to step down New Delhi, September 10 (ht): Arunachal Pradesh governor Jyoti Prasad Rajkhowa has complained to the President for being put under pressure to resign by the Centre, sources said. “The president has forwarded the complaint to the home ministry for further action. It was put up for home minister Rajnath Singh for his perusal,” said a senior home ministry official who spoke on the condition of anonymity. A Rashtrapati Bhawan official confirmed the development, saying the President forwarded the complaint to the home ministry before leaving for Chennai on Friday. In his complaint, governor Rajkhowa has defended himself and narrated how he was pressurised to resign. In the last few days,

Rajkhowa, in interviews, complained of being spoken to by a junior minister in the NDA government. He has also claimed that a senior home ministry official asked him to resign, otherwise the government would sack him. However, the governor has denied any pressure from RSS to quit. He has also denied speaking with or writing to Presi-

dent Mukherjee. “Do let me know if I have communicated with the President,” he said, probably in sarcasm. Further, he said, there has been no communication from BJP on his position. Sources said the governor, in his complaint to the President, has named the Guwahati businessman who first contacted him to tell that the centre wants his resignation.

A senior home ministry official said it was governor Rajkhowa who got in touch with Union home secretary Rajiv Mehrishi after getting an indication from the Centre that he should resign. “It is understood that Mehrishi told him if the Governor wishes, he can check about it,” said the official. Rajkhowa was appointed the governor on May 12, 2015. With Rajkhowa digging his heels, the government has decided to go slow on the matter for the time being. “But ultimately he has to go,” said the official. Rajkhowa had recommended imposition of President’s rule in the state, a decision later overturned by the Supreme Court. The top court also restored the Congress government in the state and held the decision to impose central rule as ‘unconstitutional’.

Guwahati, September 9 (pti): The Gorkha Autonomous Council Demand Committee (GACDC) has demanded that Gorkhas be recognised as an indigenous community of Assam in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) updation process. March 24, 1971 for identification of illegal migrants was not be applicable to Gorkhas as they were the "sons of the soil" and indigenous of the state. "Gorkhas have been part of the Assam agitation to drive out illegal Bangladeshis and foreigners and laid down lives as one of the agitating community," Chetry asserted. Though he did not name anyone, his reference was to Chief Minister Okram Ibobi's nephew Okram Henry, who has been laying the ground works to contest from this constituency in next year's elections. There had been obstructions and on some in-
