Southeast India heat wave kills 230

HYDErABAD, MAY 23 (AP): About 230 people have died since mid-April in a heat wave sweeping two southeast Indian states, officials said Saturday. More than 100 people have died in Andhra Pradesh state in the last week, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, the state’s top elected official, told reporters. In neighboring Telangana state, around 130 deaths have been reported since April 15, said Bhambal Ram Meena, a top state official. Day temperatures in Telangana’s Khammam district soared to more than 48 degrees Celsius (118 Fahrenheit) on Saturday. Weather authorities said the high temperatures would likely continue for at least another wee

save migrants: Un

A spokesman for the U.S. Pentagon said Thursday that Washington was readying air patrols to aid in the search. A U.S. Embassy spokeswoman in Bangkok, Melissa Sweeney, told The Associated Press in an email Saturday that the offer of assistance was still awaiting clearance. Last week, Malaysia and Indonesia announced they would provide temporary shelter to the migrants for up to one year, and the U.S. has said it would settle some of them permanently. Speaking Friday in Myanmar, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said

the Rohingyas fleeing the predominantly Buddhist nation were risking perilous journeys and putting their lives in the hands of human traffickers because “they are in despair and don’t see a future” at home. The Rohingya, numbering at around 1.3 million, have been identified by the United Nations as one of the most persecuted minorities in the world. They have been denied citizenship and chased off their land in the latest bout of ethnic violence that left them with little access to education, medical care or freedom to move around. After Myanmar took steps

to transition from dictatorship to democracy in 2011, newfound freedoms of expression gave voice to Buddhist extremists who spewed hatred against the religious minority and said Muslims were taking over the country. Attacks that followed left hundreds dead. Another 140,000 Rohingya were driven from their homes and are now living under apartheid-like conditions in crowded displacement camps. Myanmar’s government says the Rohingya are illegal migrants from Bangladesh, even though most have lived in Myanmar for generations. Bangladesh also does not recognize them as citizens. Blinken said Myanmar needs to shoulder some responsibility for the crisis. “The root of the problem for those leaving Myanmar is the political and social situation on the ground,” he told reporters in Yangon. He said Rohingya Muslims “should have a path to citizenship. The Rohgingya’s persecution has sent more than 100,000 fleeing to neighboring Southeast Asian countries. But in recent weeks, the exodus has erupted into a humanitarian crisis. Because of arrests after a crackdown on human trafficking networks in the region, captains earlier this month started abandoning boats that were packed with Rohingya Muslims as well as Bangladeshis escaping poverty.

‘Biodiversity is conservation & sustainable utilization’ Morung Express News

Twenty years from now Nagaland would experience severe human crisis, NU botanists warns

Lumami | May 23

Biodiversity is not only about conservation. It is about utilizing the earth in a sustainable manner so that it is renewed for both present and future generation, according to the words of botanists from Lumami, Nagaland University. Dr Niezo Puro, a botanist at NU, speaking on the occasion of the ‘International Day for Biological Diversity,’ on the theme ‘Biodiversity for sustainable development’ at Lumami on Friday, said conservation is not only about ‘conserving’; it means conserving and at the same time utilising it in a sustainable manner. “Our biodiversity is our wealth and we need to conserve and at the same time, gain benefits from it,” he

pointed out. On the areas of utilization, Dr Puro cited instances like the Naga farmers going for orange, or rubber or other plantation as the trend indicates, whereas, questioned Dr Puro, readily available fruits like ‘Lozü’ (gooseberry) or “Tangmo” scientific name Rhus chinensis” (a sour tiny seed, having many uses as medicinal or delicacy) are not promoted in the society. Even the Government of India has a department specifically for Lozü or gooseberry, he added. He agreed that the government of Nagaland has numerous Acts and programmes for the protection of wildlife and biodiversity;

he however lamented on the lack of willpower or the expertise to implement the well-meaning Acts. On this, Dr Puro suggested that there should be a well-organised mechanism, regulation, implementation and monitoring system on biodiversity so that we do not face a crisis in the future. He further maintained that humans cannot live without biodiversity, the environment or the ecosystem and stressed on the importance of conserving in a ‘sustainable manner’ where one can benefit through proper utilization of the plants and animals around. He also suggested eco-tourism.

Another speaker, Prof CR Deb, HoD, Botany, NU called for involvement of community, given the fact that the Naga society has a very unique land holding system where the land is owned by the community. Illustrating on the rich biodiversity of Nagaland and the scope for sustainable utilization, Prof CR Deb revealed that he has documented 450 different varieties of orchids in Nagaland. “So why go to Sikkim or Arunachal? When we have so much to show (orchids),” said the botanists. The NU botanists however warned that if Nagas continues with the present trend of unsustainable and exploitation of biodiversity, twenty years from now on, Nagaland would experience extinction of flora and fauna species which ultimately will lead to severe human crisis.

First Numismatic shop in Nagaland Morung Express News Dimapur | May 23

A first in Nagaland, Nagaland Numismatic Shop - a shop dealing with collection of currencies and rare and old coins was opened on Saturday. Located at Burma Camp, Dimapur, Nagaland Numismatic Shop is the initiative of an entrepreneur, Kuhoi Yeptho, who is an avid Numismatist (currency collector). Talking to this reporter, Yeptho said the coin shop was opened not as a profit-making establishment but a semi-voluntary enterprise which will act as a hub for those keen in collecting and auctioning preindependent and British India coins, Indian definitive coins, currencies etc. “Coins and notes represent rich history and cultural heritage. Each coin has a story to tell as it has some figure or photo on it which has a

meaning for and projects a message or represent some historical moment,” Yeptho said. According to him, collecting coins and notes is a very useful and effective hobby as one is engaged in a constructive manner and it stimulates one’s creative side. On the occa-

sion, Yeptho also shared some trivia on the varieties of Indian currencies which many may not be aware of. “Don’t you know, there were 59 varieties of one rupee note, 36 varieties of two rupees note, 43 varieties of five rupees note, 87 ten rupees note, 33 varieties of Rs 20 note, 49 varieties of Rs 50 note and 85 varieties of Rs 100 note,” he quipped. DMC Administrator, H Atokhe Aye, who inaugurated the shop described the initiative as a “big achievement as it is a new venture and therefore very encouraging.” He lauded Kuhoi for his enterprising talent and showing the way for other numismatics enthusiasts. “Let us all support this venture and create awareness on the importance of this hobby,” Atokhe added. The shop has also put on display a number of coins, old, rare and new for the viewing pleasure of coin collectors.

YANGON, MAY 23 (AP): U.N Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Saturday urged Southeast Asian nations to deal with the causes behind a growing humanitarian crisis that has forced thousands of Rohingya from Myanmar and Bangladeshi migrants to flee by sea, leaving many still stranded in boats. Ban said he has been discussing the emergency with regional leaders in Myanmar, You asked for ‘chai pani’. But it’s also important “not to send them back to a dangerous circumstance or situation.” More than 3,600 migrants — about half of them Bangladeshi and the others minority Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar — have landed ashore in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand since May 10. Thousands more are believed to be trapped at sea, and the United Nations has warned that time is running out. Dimapur police out to enforce law on wearing helmets; gaps remain Zhovezo Resu Dimapur | May 23

Dimapur is the hub of commercial activities in Nagaland. People from neighbouring states also pass through Dimapur for commercial purposes. Yet most twowheeler riders in Dimapur violate the law on helmets, without much notice from the society or the State Government regarding the safety of people on the streets. The Dimapur Traffic Police will now begin strict enforcement on the use of helmets for two-wheelers. Riding a twowheeler without helmets is an offence and can be penalized under Sec. 177 of the Motor Vehicle Act (MV Act) 1989. Penalty of Rs100 for first offence and upto Rs 300 for subsequent offences will be imposed. According to Officer-in-Charge (OC) Traffic, Dimapur, Police go time to time for checking and issue challan as a warning. However, he asks, how many people are willing to take a challan; rather, they pay a some amount and escape the scene. The most common excuse used by bikers, when caught red handed by the police, is, “It is too hot.” Some even say ‘wearing helmets make them sick.’ At times, they simply keep the helmets at home. The OC also says that the police need to teach the public to wear helmets and urges, “civic sense is what we need; People should know and understand their basic safety

needs. After that change will happen.” When asked about three people riding on a two-wheeler, the OC notes, “as per the company, the limit is only two but I don’t know whether the public know or not but it is an offense and people should be more aware.” But he is optimistic. “There has been a rapid change. 50% of them are now wearing helmets but still 50% is remaining.” According to a study done at John Hopkins Medical School, bike riders who are consistent in wearing their helmets are 22% lesser prone to being victimised with cervical spine injury and wearing a helmet prevents them from experiencing fatal injuries. Riders wearing helmets are 37% less probable to be killed in a motorcycle accident and 64% lesser chances of suffering from traumatic brain injury. With the introduction of a commissionerate system in Dimapur, it is hoped that better traffic regulation will lead to significant changes in traffic congestion in Dimapur town. When asked about the new regulation for those violating the traffic rules, Shouka Kaheto ASP (PRO) Dimapur says, “Changes cannot happen all of a sudden. Public should be given a warning and then the law enforced. We can’t enforce at one go, first we have to manage the traffic.” According to him, there should be stricter enforcement of the law. He pledges, “Laws are made only in the interest and safety of the pubic, they should respect the action.” The writer is a student of St. Aloysius College, Mangalore and is interning at The Morung Express.

‘Know your rights, do your duties and be determined to achieve your goals’ Morung Express News Dimapur | May 23

Knowing your rights and abiding by duties are vital for the progress and wellbeing of a nation, asserted Mayang Lima, Member Secretary Nagaland State Legal Service Authority (NLSA) here today. He was speaking as a legal resource person at the first session of a seminar on ‘Legal Awareness-cum-Career Guidance’ organised by Changkikong Students Conference (CKM) at Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Dimapur. Recognising the importance of legal services to improve governance and transparency, the NLSA Member Secretary maintained that, “Development will be a full stop without proper implementation and observance of law.” Covering various topics from women’s right to child labour, from RTI to Cyber crimes, Mayang Lima gave a sweeping orientation on legal matters one should know as a citizen. In the session on career guidance, resource person Asangba Chuba Ao IAS, Commissioner of Taxes, Government of Nagaland, exhorted the students to re-

member three tools – time, technology and communication - in order to effectively plan a career. Manage your time productively, use technology to your advantage and use your communication intelligently and effectively, he advised the audience, consisting mostly of college students. “A career is a way to progress through life. Do not let your aspiration remain static,” he stated. In order to build one’s career path effectively, he also recommended 3Ds – Determination, Dedication and Discipline- which, he maintained, was sorely missing in

most of the Nagas. Dr. Ilyas KPA, IPS, deputy commissioner of Dimapur (Zone II), who was the special guest, advised students to make use of the strong human resources that Nagas are inherently endowed with. The relatively egalitarian structure and the strong articulation of the Nagas of their identity is an added advantage, he maintained. Go out to the world with confidence and assert this to your advantage, he said, urging a ‘positive attitude.’ However, the Nagas do not have a functional economy, he observed. Continuing on the is-

sues raised, resource person Dr. Asangla Tzüdir of Heritage Publishing House asserted that the economy is not functioning because the state is a consuming, and not a productive, economy. “We are living in a land of prosperity but people are poor. Are we satisfied with the way the economy is functioning in our state?” Dr. Tzüdir questioned the audience. Dwelling on the problems of unemployment, she challenged the students to wake up from slumber and asked them introspect the purpose their study. She further maintained

Along with the rest of the world, the Nagaland University Department of Botany in collaboration with the State Biodiversity Board observed the ‘International Day for Biological Diversity’ on the theme ‘Biodiversity for sustainable development’. To commemorate the day, the Department of Botany, NU (Lumami) invited the Conservator of Forest (Government of Nagaland) Supongnuksi IFS as the ‘invited lecture’ and organised different activities like essay, spot painting, debate, poster, short play. The Department also invited different schools from in and around Mokokchung town to partake in the activities to mark the international day for biological diversity. The Conservator of Forest, Supongnuksi IFS, while delivering his ‘invited lecture’, presented an elaborate overview of the working system of the forest department and the state government’s approach towards conservation of biodiversity through a PowerPoint presentation. He pointed out that Nagaland, unlike other states,

has a unique land holding system, where the community or the individual owns the land. He said that the state faces the problem of unsustainable use of biodiversity due to unsustainable farming practice, loss of forest cover, depleting ground water and susceptibility to environmental change. In this regard, he maintained that there can be no forceful action that can be undertaken since the major part of the land belongs to the community and because of the ‘unique land holding pattern’ of the Naga society.

that due to various reasons, with lack of dignity being the foremost, the Nagas are living like “slaves” in their own land with no sense of ownership over economic matters. She, thus, advised the students to take up various avenues, giving healthy competition to others. Dr. Tzüdir, however, pointed out some traits, which hinder the Nagas from succeeding in different fields, particularly in career and business matter. “We inherently lack in articulation on academic matters and have attitudinal problem in business dealing,” she said, adding, “How do we provide our services to others? Without humility, we will never compete in business matters.” The moderator of the seminar, Dr. A Wati Walling, Assistant Professor, National Institute of Technology, Dimapur also exhorted the students to cultivate the habits of asking and learn to proactively go about things in life. Corruption in Assam Rifles: Delhi HC issues 3 KNF (N) cadres Train derails in Assam, 4 injured notice to MHA, MoD, paramilitary force killed in encounter Our Correspondent Imphal | May 23

At least three cadres of Kuki National Front (Nehlung Kipgen) were gunned down by a combined team of 2 Assam Rifles and Manipur Police commandos in Seigan village under Saikul of Senapati district on Saturday morning. The encounter took place around 9 am, sources said. It lasted for about two hours. KNF (N) is a signatory to suspension of operation (SoO) agreement. In the meantime, life in Manipur was totally affected on Saturday due to a 24-hour State wide shutdown call given by several civil society organisations spearheaded by the Mao Council in protest against the alleged encroachment of Manipur’s territory by the Southern Angami people from Nagaland in the border area of Dzuko Val-

ley and Koziirii within the political boundary of Manipur. Dzuko Valley is a scenic tourist destination. The Mao Council and the Committee for Koziirii-Dzuko Land Boundary had imposed the strike that began from midnight of May 22. But the Mao Council, a Naga body, withdrew the strike yesterday night saying it had reached an understanding with the Chief Minister over the boundary dispute. But the total bandh was enforced by many organisations spelling out that unilateral decision to withdraw the strike by Mao Council was a consequence of ‘misunderstanding.’ International Peace & Social Advancement (IPSA) had also called a parallel shutdown. Several political parties and civil society organizations including All Manipur United Clubs’ Organiza-

tion (AMUCO) and United Committee Manipur (UCM) backed the strike. A clear grasp of political border of Manipur appears in the Dzuko Valley area, according to the Mao based Naga bodies. They say Southern Angami residents under the leadership of the Nagaland-based Southern Angami Peoples Organisation have been continuing illegal encroachment activities on the border area of Dzuko Valley for quite a long time. They have also been accused of forcing diversion of a river course there. Chief Minister of Manipur Okram Ibobi Singh has assured the people that an enquiry will be conducted into the dispute to maintain clear lines of demarcation on the border. He has also reassured that his Nagaland counterpart TR Zeliang and the Centre will be consulted over the matter for a clear-cut solution.

SC rejects Mizoram government plea aizawl, May 23 (exPress News service): The Supreme Court has rejected the Mizoram government’s special leave petition against a lower court’s order that the Anti-Corruption Bureau investigate alleged misappropriation of funds in the construction of two mini hydel projects in south Mizoram. The SC’s dismissal of the government’s plea paves the way for the anti-graft agency to finally begin a probe into an alleged scam the government first allowed and later retracted, a move the Gauhati High Court has termed “enigmatic”. The People’s Right to Information and Development Implementing Society of Mizoram, or PRISM, had in October 2008 filed an FIR against the state’s Power and Electricity Department (P&E) which constructed the two mini hydel projects. The complaint pointed out that the estimate for the Tuipanglui mini hydel project rose from Rs 980 lambs in 1992 to Rs 3721 lakhs by 2001 (an almost four-fold escalation over less than a decade), while that for the Kau-Tlabung mini hydel project rose from Rs 482 lakhs in 1994 to Rs 3253 lakhs in 2001 (an almost

seven-fold escalation over seven years). The ACB conducted a preliminary enquiry and found that 13 government engineers led by the then Engineer-in charge of the Mizoram Public Works Department caused a loss of Rs 1.75 crores to the state exchequer while building the two hydel projects. The ACB conducted two more enquiries following calls for clarification by the Vigilance Department, but each time the agency made out prima-facie cases of corruption. Finally the Vigilance Department in May 2010 gave the ACB the green light to register criminal cases against 16 government engineers from both the state PWD and P&E departments. Less than two months later, however, the Vigilance Department withdrew the permission. PRISM took the government to court over the withdrawing of the permission, but the government argued neither the CAG, the Public Accounts Committee under the state legislature nor a departmental enquiry found cases of misappropriation. The Gauhati HC however questioned the Vigilance Department action of cancelling the permission

Indo-Bangla friendship bus arrives from Dhaka Dawki, May 23 (Pti): The Indo-Bangladesh friendship bus that began its journey from Dhaka arrived here in Meghalaya today amid tight security. The 26-seater BRTC bus that left Dhaka with over 20 Bangladesh government officials at around 3 pm yesterday arrived here at 9 am and Meghalaya Transport Corporation Manager Anthony Pariat received the entourage. Aimed at improving people-to-people contact, the bus is expected to foster friendships and contacts between the residents of the two neighbouring countries and slated to be officially launched next month. Bangladesh Road Transport and Bridges Ministry Joint Secretary Md Azharul Islam Khan told PTI that security and custom checks took nearly three hours causing an additional delay to the journey that should have been completed within nine hours travel time. The bus passed through Meghalaya state capital, Shillong, about 100 km north of here, at around 3:15 pm and proceeded ahead for lunch of the those on board, at a state-owned resort on the bank of the scenic Umiam lake. Bangladesh Road transport minister Obaidul Quader had flagged off the

bus service at the Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) depot. An agreement and a protocol is due to be signed between the two countries before the services were introduced, another official on the bus said. Quadar hoped the leaders of both the countries will sign the agreement during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's possible visit next month.

for an ACB investigation and doubted the exact extent the other bodies cited by the government during the case arguments might have gone to during their own enquiries. It passed an order that the ACB proceed with the investigation and wind up the case by September this year.

The motorman and the assistant driver of the train are among the four persons who picked up minor injuries in the mishap and have been admitted to hospital. A relief train was immediately rushed to the site bearing the necessary help, including medical aid. Senior railway officials from the railway headquarters, Alipurduar Division

and New Bongaigaon have reached the site to lead the restoration work. The derailment affected running of trains on the up line and some passenger trains were cancelled, the spokesman said. The cancelled passenger trains are New Jalpaiguri- Dekargaon passenger, Fakiragram-Kamakhya passenger, New Jalpaiguri-New Coochbehar Special, Dhubri-Fakiragram passenger, Guwahati-Alipurduar junction Passenger, Kamakhya- Fakiragram passenger, Silghat-Dhubri Rajyarani Express, New CoochbeharNew Jalpaiguri special and Kamakhya-Alipurduar Intercity Express. New Delhi, May 23 (the iNDiaN exPress): The Delhi High court on Friday issued notices to the Home Ministry, the Defence Ministry and the Assam Rifles after a plea pointed out that an inquiry by the vigilance department into allegations of corruption was “neither fair nor proper” as the director general of the paramilitary force, accused of corruption himself, was also the head of the department. The force had initiated an inquiry into the allegations in September 2014 after a sting operation by the magazine Tehelka alleged corruption in the awarding of civil contracts by the Assam Rifles and claimed that the Director General, the Additional Director General and the

Chief Engineer of the force were receiving bribes for the contracts through a Junior Commissioned Officer. The sting operation had also quoted some alleged contractors, who had claimed that 30 per cent of the cost of a project for the contract “goes straight into the officials’ pockets”. The petition, filed by a former personnel of the Assam Rifles, sought an external and independent inquiry. “The said sting operation specifically reveals that some Assam Rifles personnel used to take bribes from private contractors at various levels for the smooth passage of tenders, thereby tarnishing the organisation as a whole. The bribes are openly taken by the men in uniform sitting inside their

Tripura CM urges agricultural scientists to stop farmers' suicides aGartala, May 23 (iaNs): Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar urged the scientific community in the agriculture and allied sectors to take suitable measures to stop farmers' suicides in the country. "During the regime of both Congress and BJP led central governments, farmers' suicides remained unabated. Only the scientists and experts can boldly ask the government to rectify the faulty agriculture and

related policies," Sarkar said while addressing the 22nd regional council meeting of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). "During the last decade, over three lakh farmers have committed suicide. During the first 100 days of Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA government, over 6,000 farmers killed themselves across the country," he added. Sarkar said the quality of research work, scientific studies and experts' evalu-

ation of farming sectors in India is the best in the world, but unfortunately the execution is extremely bad due to the faulty policies of the government. Agricultural scientists, experts, research scholars, vice-chancellors of many agricultural universities, specialists in farming, horticulture, fisheries, animal resources, and educational institutions from across the country took part in the two-day session which concluded on May 23.

respective offices,” it stated. The petitioner, 65-yearold Rampat Singh, alleged that the inquiry is “bad in law, illegal, improper and biased as the same is against the principal of natural justice and against the directive principles of state policy”. He pointed out that officials of the Assam Rifles who are conducting the inquiry are subordinates of the DG, who has been named in the sting operation, and the Vigilance Department was under his control as well. The plea also raised the legal issue of whether a junior officer can proceed with a departmental inquiry into allegations made against a superior officer, who is also in charge of the principal office.

The Morung Express 4 businEss Farm Machinery Bank for custom hiring inaugurated Global economy, agri a challenge: Jaitley Dimapur

Sunday

24 May 2015

Dimapur, may 23 (mExN): With the objective to promote mechanization in areas with low farm power availability, to provide hiring services for various Agricultural Machinery, to expand mechanized activity and to introduce newly develop agricultural implements and machineries in crop production. Bendangyanger, Director of Agriculture inaugurated the Farm Machinery Bank for custom hiring at Niuland on May 22. Host of senior officers from the Department of Agriculture accompanied him. Nosezole, Jt. Director of Agriculture, in her Keynote Address dwelled on the importance of farm mechanization. She said that Cultivable land is fast decreasing but demand for food is ever increasing with the fast

growing population. Therefore, production has to be accelerated to demand for food. This calls for timely and precise fieldwork, which is possible only with farm mechanization. Farm power availability is significantly low in North East Region which necessitates promotion of Farm Mechanization as a special mission such as Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM). Custom Hiring Centre is a component of this special Mission promoting “custom hiring centre’s”, to offset adverse economy of scale arising due to small land holding and high cost of individual ownership. All the farmers cannot possess farm machineries whereas depending animal power alone slows production process and can become problematic in management specially during

off season or when there is a disease outbreak resulting in complete failure of crops. Besides, manpower is very costly even if available. Custom hiring will gather to this need. Custom hiring centre or machinery bank as the name indicates is a centre where machineries will be lending out to farmers. Finally, she also highlighted on the operational guidelines for custom hiring. SDO (Civil) Niuland exhorted the gathering and requested the Director of Agriculture to organize training programmes on the latest technological know-how for the farming community of Niuland. The chief guest Bendangyanger, Director of Agriculture congratulated Holo who is the first entrepreneur of the State for implementing the programme of Farm machin-

ery bank for custom hiring. In his address, he stressed on sustainable agriculture growth and “food for all” by 2020 against the back drop of limited availability of farming resources machineries especially cultivable land. Increase in agricultural production would have to mainly come from enhancement in farm productivity in the existing cultivated area and this productivity increase in turn can be realized by increasing land and labour efficiency in agriculture through farm mechanization. He also added that Niuland area has the highest production and productivity in major crops in Nagaland. Moreover, with the implementation of Farm Machinery Bank for custom hiring will certainly increase both in case of production and in case

of productivity. He also requested the participants and extension workers to spread the message of profit through custom hiring, which will benefit the farmers in general and the marginal farmers in particular. Lastly, he wished the entrepreneur all success in implementing the programme and encouraged him to be sincere, expand the farm machinery bank and be a role model for other custom hiring centre. Letkholal Hangsing Dy. Director of Agriculture chaired the programme, Bendangtemsu, DAO Dimapur, delivered Welcome address and L.Hoshito Chophy, SDAO Niuland, pronounced vote of thanks. This was stated in a press release issued by Wochamo Patton, Agriculture Officer, District Agriculture Office, Dimapur, Nagaland.

NEw DElhi, may 23 (pTi): Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said inflation has been brought under control in the past one year but global economy and agrarian situation as well as domestic investments pose challenge to the Indian economy. Addressing his second press conference in as many days to highlight achievements of Narendra Modi government in first year in office, Jaitley said “restlessness” of people for the economy to grow at a faster pace should put pressure on Congress to shed anti-growth and antidevelopment agenda. “In the past one year inflation has been under control to a great extent… Overall inflation situation has been much better than it has been in the past one decade,” he told reporters at the BJP headquarters here. While the decline in international oil and com-

modity prices have helped cool inflation, the government too has taken steps to control food inflation that has led to both wholesale and retail inflation come down from a peak of 11 per cent, he said. Asked about the challenges facing the economy, Finance Minister said global economic situation and domestic agrarian scenario were a challenge. “Domestic investment has to pick up, that is a challenge and even though on economic front we have succeeded in some areas… these are three areas where there are challenges,” he said, adding the global economic situation was beyond the control of the government. Listing out initiatives of the government, Jaitley said the financial inclusion and social security schemes have been a big success with over 15 crore Jan Dhan accounts being opened and 7.5 crore peo-

ple availing life and accidental insurance cover under the Jan Suraksha and Jeevan Jyoti schemes. The government, he said, wants to more than double the insurance coverage to 40-50 per cent in the near-term. With 11 per cent of population having pension plans, the Atal Pension Yojana wants to “make India into a far bigger pensioned society”. “If India grows by 7.5 per cent, India should never be satisfied. We have to aspire for more and this aspiration and restlessness of people should be a pressure on parties, especially Congress, which have adopted an anti-growth and anti development agenda,” Jaitley said. The wholesale inflation dropped to a record low of (-)2.65 per cent and the retail inflation was at a four year low of 4.87 per cent in April.

NEw DElhi, may 23 (ThE hiNDu): Recently, in a bid to promote fixed line services and arrest their decline, the telecom regulator TRAI removed call termination charges paid by landline service providers. Close on the heels of state-run BSNL'S newly launched plan, Airtel too has introduced unlimited calling plans for its landline customers. While BSNL landline users will be able to make free calls for 10-hour period in the night without additional charge, Airtel broadband users can get 24 hours free calling via Rs 49 or Rs 99 pack. BSNL has introduced unlimited free calling between 9 pm and 7 am from its landline phones to all other landline phones as well as mobile phones of all service provider’s network across India. “With this unlimited free night calling scheme BSNL intends to promote Landline usage,” the

state-run service provider had said in a statement. For Airtel, the offer covers over 15 lakh of its broadband users. While users can avail of free unlimited local call facility by paying Rs. 49 a month, unlimited STD and local calls can be made at Rs 99 a month. Like in the case of BSNL, the pack includes calls made to both landlines and mobile phones across any network in the country. “Landlines never went out of business. We have seen strong preference for landlines among users, particularly for long duration calls… We have introduced this plan to increase customer stickiness as there is renewed interest in broadband and competition in the space is increasing,” Hemanth Guruswamy, CEO – Homes, Bharti Airtel (India) told The Hindu. Recently, in a bid to promote fixed line services and arrest their de-

cline, the telecom regulator TRAI removed call termination charges paid by landline service providers. According to TRAI data, wireline subscriber base declined from 26.72 million at the end of February 2015 to 26.59 million at the end of March 2015. While the two-PSUs BSNL and MTNL hold the lions share of the wireline market at 75 per cent, private players have remaining 25 per cent. BSNL has the biggest market share at 61.71 per cent, while Airtel’s share in 12.83 per cent. The share of urban and rural subscribers for landline stands at 81 per cent and 19 per cent, respectively. As on March 31, 2015, the top five wired broadband service providers in the country were BSNL (9.96 million), Bharti Airtel (1.43 million), MTNL (1.14 million), Atria Convergence Technologies (0.67 million) and YOU Broadband (0.44 million).

BlackBerry cuts jobs worldwide ToroNTo, may 23 (rEuTErs): BlackBerry is cutting jobs across the world as it consolidates its software, hardware and applications business. The Canadian smartphone maker has, however, not specified how many employees would be affected. BlackBerry, which reported a 16.8 per cent fall in quarterly revenue in March, had about 6,225 full-time employees as of February 2015, according to its website. The Waterloo, Ontariobased company last month said it was considering clos-

ing its offices in Sweden, a move that would result in the loss of up to 100 jobs. BlackBerry is reallocating resources to capitalise on growth opportunities and achieve profitability across all its business segments, a company spokeswoman said in an e-mailed statement on Friday. Up to Friday's close, the company's Toronto-listed stock had risen more than 62 per cent in the last 12 months, whereas the USlisted stock had risen nearly 44 per cent during the same period.

market hasn’t yet taken off in India due to high costs and lack of charging infrastructure. This is because the technology is restricted to very few platforms like cars. We need the entire eco-system to come up simultaneously which is what we are working on. Just like any electronic marketplace needs a critical mass of buyers and sellers to succeed, the same way electric mobility needs a large number of vehicles with an elaborate charging stations network to succeed. NEw DElhi, may 23 (iNDiaN ExprEss): Riding a scooter in harsh summers is quite challenging. ETI Dyanamics has showcased a prototype of its solar electric hybrid scooter which comes with a canopy of bendable solar panel to provide some shade to the rider and also power the vehicle. The prototype can be charged on the go and can travel for more than 50 km on a single charge at a top speed of 45 kmph. “It is light weight, has a weather proof design and propagates the concept of mobile charging infrastructure,” according to the company. ETI Dynamics is looking for other adaptations of this prototype such as auto-rickshaws, buses, golfcarts and shuttles in the near future. “The addition of solar panel to the vehicle increases the distances the scooter is able to travel by 15-20% thus providing more efficiency gains,” said the company in a release. It has partnered with Sunon Energy of India and is also in active dialogues with the Digit Group of USA. “The electric vehicle

Believers Church helps enhance Public SPace livelihood of poor families A brief analysis of the 14th Finance Commission recommendation

Dimapur, may 23 (mExN): The Believers Church under its community development project distributed 99 bundles of CGI sheet, 17 sewing machines, 10 bicycles, 4 handcarts, and 2 goats to underprivileged families for their income generation and livelihood on May 23 at its diocese office at 7th Mile, Dimapur. The chief guest of the programme, Azuto Semy, Assistant Labour Commissioner, Wokha, in his speech shared that Naga society today is infested with favoritism for its own tribe and group, which has affected in dispensing justice. The government schemes meant for the poorest and the needy do not reach the actual beneficiaries because of

corruption, he said, and pointed out that government agencies should learn from the example set by the Believers Church for fair distribution of welfare schemes. He also shared the ministry of Jesus Christ where he not only preached the good news, but also healed the sick, cleansed the lepers and fed the hungry. He compared all these to the compassion of the Believers Church and encouraged the ministry to continue with its benevolent service towards the people irrespective of religion, tribe or class. He also emphasized on dignity of labor which has diminished among Naga society, the release said. Meanwhile, Thongsenlo Kath, ADC DM SSA Kohima, the guest of honor, urged the beneficiary families to utilize the gifts to elevate the economic condition of the family and in turn help the society in future.

The government gave its approval on the recommendation of the 14th Finance commission headed by Y.V Reddy to increase the states’ share of the divisible tax revenue from 32% to 42%. This was a major step taken by the Modi government since coming to power, with the objective of improving cooperative federalism between the centre and the states by way of granting greater financial autonomy to the states. The present central government viewed that instead of the central government spending for the state, if the state government is allowed to spend by itself, it shall result to higher multiplier effect, on the premises that the state know better their own problems and needs. Besides, for those states where PSEs are located, they shall have their share from disinvestment of such enterprises. The state government shall

also carry out the expenditure hoping that it will be more efficient and increase GDP in comparison to the expenditure carried out by the central government. With fewer resources now lie with the centre, the central government plans to rationalize and gradually disband centrally sponsored schemes and pass the resources allocated for such schemes to the states to deepen devolution. Some analysts are worried that the discontinuation of Centrally Sponsored Schemes/Central Assistance to States, which are now available for states, may adversely affect some states. While this is also true that it may have negative impact upon the states, it is to be noted that the centrally sponsored schemes will be disbanded gradually one after another over a period of time, thus giving more time for states to absorb the shocks

resulting from withdrawal of CSS by the centre. Besides, it will also largely depend upon the capabilities of the state governance to counter any such adverse impacts. In times to come, it will requires the state to evolve out some new schemes and programmes to replace the withdrawal of any centrally sponsored scheme particularly relating to social and health sector which are of primary importance. Besides, some rational measures such as identifying the needs of the local people, prioritizing area wise or sector wise for development etc. has to be taken into account before the plans and schemes are put into action. It is also important that the government invite proposals and plans from various local bodies at different levels with respect to their developmental needs to ensure inclusive growth and

development at the ground level within our state. Arbitrary decision and plan without taking into consideration the cry of the peoples’ demand shall massacre the whole idea of cooperative federalism. Flexibility of policies and programmes is essential to fulfill the diverse needs of the people. The government must also puts more emphasis on development of women and weaker sections of the society by increasing the share of resource allocation for these sectors, for the rhetoric slogan of ‘women empowerment’ is hollow without any fund. In addition to that, human resource development, rural livelihood for farmers, health & medical, law and order are some areas which have to be given greater importance. This new arrangement is expected to bring radical changes in the field of governance too, since with greater responsibil-

ity now lie upon the shoulder of the government, it cannot remain a mute spectator waiting for the centre to give its direction rather the state shall have to take active policy measures and put them into practice and drive the state’s economy into a new direction. To act more independently in bringing out economic plans and policies, it is going to be a new challenging task that the state government is to embark upon with. Some analysts are also cynical particularly about small states whether this tax devolution would lead them to progressive growth is also a matter to be concern with. It is however, expected that the new party-less regime shall prove its capability by taking adequate measures and leads the state into an ever progressive growth. Balance is key to a healthy life Prof Norimah A Karim

A balanced diet is vital to enable the body to better absorb nutrients. It is always a good idea to eat a well-balanced diet as this will meet your nutrient requirements while avoiding nutrient deficiencies and chemical excesses or imbalances. Try asking any nutritionist or dietitian and you will get the same answer. What happens when you eat your food? The body’s digestive system goes to work after food is ingested to release the nutrients contained within. These nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream, which then transports the nutrients to their respective target tissues. However, not all nutrients can be utilised to the same extent. There’s something called bioavailability, which is the degree to which the amount of an ingested nutrient is absorbed from the food and used for normal body functions. There are several factors that influence how much of a nutrient is used, stored, or excreted, namely: • Nutrient components of food, chemical form of the nutrient. • Gender, age, nutrient status and life stage

(e.g. pregnancy). • Macronutrients – carbohydrates, proteins, fats (high ingestion rate of more than 90%). • Micronutrients – vitamins and minerals (varies widely in how much is absorbed and utilised). • Excess intake of one mineral can influence the absorption and metabolism of other minerals. Higher absorption of minerals occurs among individuals who are deficient in a mineral, while certain elements in your diet (e.g. oxalic acid or oxalate in spinach) can decrease mineral availability by chemically binding to the mineral.

How nutrients can complement one another Nutrients can interact with each other in different ways, such as keeping another nutrient soluble or protecting it from interaction with nutrient inhibitors. For instance, when foods that are rich in vitamin C are consumed together with ironrich foods, the iron absorption is increased by two to three times – have a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice together with a

available iron that is known to enhance the absorption of iron from all foods. Vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium, phosphorous, and magnesium, while the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K all require fats in order for them to be absorbed. Inhibitors of nutrient absorption

Just as nutrients can help with other nutrient absorption, they can also interact with one another in the opposite manner by “cancelling” each other out. For instance, phytic acid (which is abundant in certain plant foods such as pulses, whole-grain cereals, seeds, or nuts) will interfere with the absorption of calcium, iron and zinc. This is critical to know if you take calcium or iron supplements, so you can plan your intake accordingly at a different time of day so as to avoid interference. There are two main sources of iron in food, namely haem iron and non-haem iron. Haem iron is derived mainly from haemoglobin/myoglobin in bowl of breakfast cereal and it will help your animal protein sources and is readily biobody absorb more of the iron in the cereal. available. On the other hand, non-haem Meat, fish and poultry contain highly bio- iron is derived from plant sources such

as enriched cereals and pasta, beans, and dark green leafy vegetables. Balanced diet is important These days, you will find that a lot of times, vitamins and minerals are added to foods to increase their nutritional value. For instance, B vitamins (folic acid) are often added to breakfast cereals, flour and certain spreads, and are more bioavailable than what is naturally present in our food (dietary folate, such as those found in fruits, vegetables). However, this does not mean that you should only consume foods fortified with folic acid. Natural dietary sources such as green leafy vegetables can be complemented with these foods, and not the other way around. After all, these natural dietary sources will contain lots of other beneficial nutrients such as unique vitamins/ minerals, phytochemicals and fibre. You won’t go wrong if you maintain a balanced, moderate and varied diet as it promotes maximal nutrient absorption. This is the key to getting the most out of food. The four most confusing things about SUGAR High-salt diets may harm even then none were added. If you do see any type of sweetener—including brown sugar, cane juice, corn syrup, maltose or fructose—make sure it's not the first thing listed. By law, ingredients must be in descending order of weight, so the higher up the added sugar, the more there is per bite. Also check for multiple types of sugar, which is a sneaky way food companies make something supersweet without telegraphing it on the ingredients list. But you can automatically slash your sugar load by ditching sweetened drinks, eating mostly whole foods instead of sugary snacks and buying more unsweetened versions of packaged foods.

owadays, when people meet me and hear that I'm a dietitian, the first thing they want to know is: What's the deal with sugar? No doubt, sugar is the diet villain du jour. You've probably seen some scary headlines calling sugar toxic and pointing to it as the source of all our health woes. But the real story is far more complex. Sugar in large quantities is, in fact, a big threat to your health. For years, experts have been saying that eating too much of any food can up your diabetes risk because overeating leads to obesity, which is the real culprit behind skyrocketing rates of the disease. But recent research suggests that the sweet stuff may have a more direct impact: For every additional 150 calories of added sugar downed per person per day, the prevalence of diabetes rose by 1 percent, even after controlling for obesity, physical activity and calories from other foods, according to a large study looking at international data. When it comes to heart health, excess sugar is also suspect. People who ate the most added sugar more than doubled their risk of death from heart disease, a JAMA Internal Medicine study found. Adding to the problem, sugar is hiding in many surprising products, such as oatmeal and peanut butter, and confusing food labels make it hard to know how much of it you're getting. So what's a girl to do? Before you swear off everything from ice cream to strawberries, read my ground rules to satisfying your sweet tooth in the safest way possible.

ritish Columbians live about as long and as well as any people in the history of the world. Why then are we constantly looking for a tiny extra edge, something — anything — that promises even greater health and longevity? And what are we willing to give up to gain that edge? Well, fat, sugar and salt, for starters. But that’s just the beginning. On the advice of dietitians, doctors, naturopaths and anyone with a unique idea for a dietary exclusion or tenuous grasp on dietary science, we deny ourselves much of the pleasure of eating. Vancouver doctor John Sloan has had a good look at all the science used to sell billions of dollars worth of supplements, so-called functional and health foods, and diet books, and finds it unimpressive. His new book, Forbidden Food, tackles the myths and the reality food-by-food, debunking bad science and exposing charlatans.forbiddenfood. As if to support Sloan’s case, scientists advising the U.S. Department

Truth #1: Some kinds are better than others It's key to know the difference between the two main types of sugar. Naturally occurring sugar is found in whole foods, such as fruit, vegetables and dairy products. These foods tend to be better for you because they deliver fiber (in the case of produce), as well as protein and calcium (in dairy) and other important vitamins and minerals. Added sugars are anything sweet put into a food for flavor, from the sugar in store-bought ketchup to the honey you spoon into your tea. (Yes, "natural" sweeteners count.) These sugars are concentrated and mostly devoid of nutrients. Although honey, maple syrup and the like have some healthful antioxidants and minerals, they still pack hefty doses of sweetener per spoonful. This means you get a lot of pure sugar—and calories—in a small portion, making it easy to go overboard and cause big problems. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), increases in sugar intake over the past four decades parallel our expanding waistlines, and studies have connected added sugar, not the naturally occurring kind, to heart disease and diabetes. Truth #2: You have to read labels carefully A lot of packaged foods contain both naturally occurring and added sugars. But the Nutrition Facts label lumps both kinds together, giving you one combined total. Last year, the FDA proposed separating the two to make it clearer how much of each type you're getting, but until those changes take effect, the easiest way to tell if sugar has been added is to scan the actual ingredients list. If you see sugar grams but no sweeteners listed,

Truth #3: The limits are low but doable According to the AHA, women should have no more than 100 calories of added sugar per day (about 6 teaspoons). Yet the average woman gets 18 teaspoons a day! Most of our added sugar comes from sweetened drinks and packaged foods, and the Nutrition Facts label lists sugar in grams, not calories or teaspoons, so it's easy to lose track. Fortunately, there's a simple formula for counting up sugar from any source: Just remember that 1 teaspoon equals about 4 grams of added sugar. So if you add a teaspoon to your morning joe and later have a chocolate protein bar with 12 grams (3 teaspoons) of sugar, you have 2 teaspoons (8 grams) left for the day.

igh-Salt Diets May Harm Even Those With Normal Blood Pressure When it comes to salt, there are countless studies that sometimes disagree with each other. There was one published in the American Journal of Hypertension which suggested that a diet with low salt or sodium intake could harm your health. On the other hand, the World Health Organisation (WHO) suggests that high salt intake could increase the risk of heart disease. All of this makes it extremely difficult to understand where do you draw the fine line? How much is too much and how little is too little? For those suffering from high blood pressure, salt is a definite no no. They must restrict the quantity of salt in all their meals but what if you've got normal blood pressure. Can you be liberal with the use of salt? A recent study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, puts a break on this notion! Researchers at the University of Delaware have found how a diet with extra sodium content can cause long term damage to various organs including heart, kidneys, brain and blood vessels. Those who suffer from high blood pressure and cholesterol are generally recommended to shun salt, but health experts advise others to keep a strict watch on their daily sodium as well. "Blood pressure responses to alterations in dietary sodium vary widely, which has led to the concept of 'saltsensitive' blood pressure," said one of the study authors William Farquhar. "If blood pressure increases during a period of high dietary sodium or decreases during a low-sodium period, the person is considered salt sensitive. If there is no change in blood pressure with sodium restriction, an individual is considered salt resistant," Farquhar noted. However, the new research points to evidence of adverse effects on multiple target organs and tissues, even for people who are salt resistant.

Truth #4: Natural doesn't mean free-for-all Hardly any of us are inhaling too many servings of whole fruits and vegetables. But juices, smoothies and dried fruits are another story. Recently, a client was confused when I pointed out that her 15-ounce bottle of green juice contained more than 53 grams of sugar (and nearly 270 calories!). It's all fruits and veggies, she reasoned, so why care? One problem when you gulp your produce is that you're getting natural sugar without fiber (and it's fiber in fruit that slows down digestion and gives your body time to metabolize the sugar). As a result, you store the excess calories as fat. Fiber also prevents blood sugar spikes that can raise your risk of type 2 diabetes. Dried fruit can be tricky, too; without water, the natural sugars become more concentrated. You can still enjoy it, but right-size your portion: How can extra salt harm your body? One cup of fresh fruit equals 1/2 cup of 100 per- • Potential effects on the arteries include reduced function of the endocent juice equals 1/4 cup of unsweetened dried thelium, which is the inner lining of fruit. crease arterial stiffness. • Regarding the kidneys, high sodium is associated with reduced renal function, a decline observed with only a minimal increase in blood pressure. • Sodium may also affect the sympathetic nervous system, which activates what is often termed the fightor-flight response. "High dietary sodium can also lead to left ventricular hypertrophy, or enlargement of the muscle tissue that makes up the wall of the heart's main pumping chamber," co-author of the review paper David Edwards noted. "As the walls of the chamber grow thicker, they become less compliant and eventually are unable to pump as forcefully as a healthy heart," Edwards pointed out. "Chronically elevated dietary sodium may 'sensitize' sympathetic neurons in the brain, causing a greater response to a variety of stimuli, including skeletal muscle contraction," Farquhar noted. According to a study that came out last year, global sodium consumption is already at an alarming level. The research found that people across the globe are already exceeding the prescribed limit of daily salt intake. The standard limit prescribed by the World Health Organisation is two gram (2,000mg). Surprisingly, the study estimated the global sodium consumption in the year 2010 to be twice as much as the prescribed limit. The study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine which stated that the rise in sodium consumption has resulted into more than 1.6 million cardiovascular-related deaths per year. How to reduce salt intake • Do away with the salt shaker. are you suffering from a health food delusion? of Agriculture recently said that its limits on dietary cholesterol — followed by millions of people for 40 years — are not supported by scientific evidence. The guideline is expected to be dropped. And last year, an analysis of 72 studies involving 600,000 participants in 18 countries in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that consuming saturated fatty acid — found in meat, cheese and butter — was not associated with coronary disease risk. But, like planes landing safely at the airport, the media doesn’t report studies that find an absence of risk. Only the rare outliers merit headlines, the kind of headlines that charlatans seize on and exploit. Such was the case when researcher Peter Gibson reported in 2011 that gluten caused gastrointestinal symptoms in people who did not have Celiac Disease. The media went into overdrive and a multi-

Nothing to see here, people. Move along. In reviewing the science, Sloan says there is no reason that otherwise healthy people should change their diet in any way based on the available evidence. (Obviously, people with Celiac or other health conditions may have to avoid some foods.) “Most studies find tiny, tiny differences between groups based on what they eat,” he said. And when the evidence is fleeting and contradictory, the only sensible thing to do is ignore it. But the popular obsession with nutrients such as gluten or certain saturated fats is cultlike, said Sloan. Our beliefs about food and health are just that, beliefs. The truth

should be liberating. “You can eat any kind of food you want.” Period. Full stop. You will not be surprised to learn that the good doctor has ruined a few dinner parties with his radical views. Rather than feeling liberated, people cling fiercely to what they believe about food, whether or not there is evidence to support their views, he said. Tribal food rules have their origins in evolution, probably as a way to avoid poisoning and illness, but also to encourage cultural cohesiveness. Eating what the tribe deems right and safe confers a survival benefit and creates community and so it is hardwired into our brains, he said. As a result we crave rules — every culture and primitive tribe on the planet has food rules — even though the modern food landscape is largely without the kinds of threats early humans endured. “In

the corners of South America or Africa you will find tribes with really weird food prohibitions, like women who eat eggs while pregnant will have babies with feathers, or myths like eating the heart of a lion before battle makes you brave,” he said. “This kind of thing is universal. We have a very powerful desire to seek and follow common wisdom about food.” Fast forward to the modern world and we are emotionally programmed to buy into rules for eating that promise to make us healthier, fight cancer and live longer. We want what the gurus are selling. For those who care to review the evidence with Sloan, Forbidden Food tackles many popularly held beliefs from fat is bad, salt is a silent killer and white sugar is poison, to fibre saves lives and antioxidants fight cancer. He also explains why science is a poor tool for studying something as complex as diet in creatures as unpredictable

and adaptable as human beings. While Sloan purposely does not provide guidelines for healthy eating to replace those flawed instructions floating around in the popular media, he warns against using his message to devour everything in sight. “One of the first questions that comes up whenever I talk about this concerns obesity,” he said. “Eating anything you want is not the same as eating as much as you want.” Dr. Sloan would be the first person to say that you should eat, or not eat, whatever makes you feel good — that goes for white bread, fruit, broccoli and whole grains — even if the effect is largely psychological. “If I open the fridge in the afternoon and eat a nice thick piece of salami, it’s delicious but I do feel a little guilty,” he said. “If I choose the blueberries, I feel better. Even though I know there isn’t any evidence they are better for me, I feel more virtuous.” Randy Shore is the author of Grow What You Eat, Eat What You Grow, a cookbook and gardening manual for lovers of whole fresh foods.

The Church’s dirty little secret

I

told my minister friend I was sorry he had to learn this little dirty secret about church life. I asked for his story. He had two. A church member attending his class said she could not find her workbook. The pastor told her he had borrowed it for another class, and she was welcome to use his. She said, “Okay. I’ll go home then.” And she stalked out. The minister said, “Would she have done that at work? At the doctor’s office? I think not.” But she had no problem with putting her immaturity on full display at church. On another day, a man stormed out of a church leadership meeting because his idea for a fundraiser had been rejected. My friend said, “Would he have done that in a college class? At work? At home? At the store, even?” He would not have. And this guy was a church leader! The church—which is the institution which we Christians should respect most—ends up being the least respected by many. And the pastor the least respected professional. My friend said, “Situations like these used to keep me up at night. By God’s grace, they don’t any more.” I’m sad he had to learn this reality about church life; I’m glad he’s sleeping at night. A couple of random comments come to mind. —The only way Noah could stand the stink inside the ark was the storm outside. —That the church still exists, with all its human flaws, is proof aplenty of the grace and mercy of God. Immature believers abound and that’s all right. Babies must go through all the stages of development before they achieve maturity. But we should never put an infant in a place of leadership. Leaders must be adults in the faith if they are to be role models and examples to those coming after. The leader who storms out of a meeting because he/she did not get their way has just done the church a favor. He/she has identified themselves as unqualified to lead, as surely as if they had hung a sign around their neck. We are better off without such people representing God’s church and making critical decisions. (On the other hand, if that one comes back and apologizes before the entire group, that is a sign of a growing

“Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there” (Ephesians 4:14). “Church is the only place on earth where people can throw hissy fits and get away with it.” —A friend serving his first church after seminary maturity and they should be given every encouragement.) Here are seven “wrong ideas” the spiritually immature—those given to “hissy fits,” as my friend put it—have about the Lord’s work … 1) They see the church as a human institution belonging to them. “We can do anything we want to. It’s our church. My daddy helped start this church.” Or paid for that pew. Or build that shed. They do not see the church as holy and belonging to Christ (Matthew 16:18). They are in for a rude awakening when they appear before Jesus some day.

dance.” “It’s his job to visit the sick and reach the lost; that’s why we pay him.” They do not see that the command to be light and salt, to take the gospel to the ends of the earth, was given to the entire church, not just the apostles. They are in for a rude awakening when they stand before Jesus some day. 4) They see their contributions (money, service, teaching, etc.) as voluntary and not required. “If I give my money, I expect it to be done the way I want it to.” “I’m not giving my money there anymore; I don’t like what the pastor is doing.” They do not see themselves as under Heaven’s mandate and fully accountable to the living God. They are in for a rude awakening when they stand before Jesus one day. 5) They see their church’s reputation in the community as irrelevant and unity as beside the point. “We’re Baptists. Where you find two, you’ll have three opinions.” “I’ve been here the longest; I deserve to be heard.” “If the community sees our church as divisive, that’s their problem and they don’t have to come.” They do not get John 17:21 where our Lord prayed for unity among His people “that the world may believe that Thou hast sent me.” When the church is divided, the community wants none of what it has to offer, and the Kingdom of God suffers. Such people are in for a rude awakening when they stand before Jesus one day.

2) They see the pastors as their employees, there to do their bidding and accountable to them. “We hired him; we can fire him.” “If we are unhappy with him, then he has lost his effectiveness and needs to be replaced.” They do not believe that God sends pastors to churches and installs them as the overseers of His flock (Acts 20:28 and I Peter 5:2). They are in for a rude awakening when 6) They see their childish behavior as no one’s business but their own. they stand before Jesus some day. “I’m not responsible for what others 3) They see God’s work as something the think of me.” “If people make decisions professionals do and their roles as volun- about Jesus based on how I act, well that’s just their problem.” “God knows my heart.” teers when it’s convenient and easy. “We hired him to increase the atten- They do not get Matthew 5:16 where Jesus

commanded us to let our light so shine before men that they might see our good works and glorify our Father who is in Heaven. A great deal depends on my faithfulness. They are in for a rude awakening when they stand before Jesus one day. 7) They see themselves as the center of their own universe and think everything revolves around them. “God wants me happy. I heard a television preacher say that and I believe it.” “If I’m not getting anything out of the sermon, it’s the preacher’s fault.” They do not see that Jesus Christ is the center of everything, and that worship is a matter of “giving to Him the glory due His name.” By worshiping Him rightly, they will get a lot from a service; however, if they go into the service to “get something,” they will receive nothing from it. It’s a matter of focus. Count this as a call for maturity in leadership and discipleship of the membership. Pastors should preach constantly that the commands of the New Testament were given to the full church and not just the disciples, and that we shall all stand before the Lord and give account of our faithfulness some day. They asked a well-known preacher of a past generation, “What is the most important thing we need to get across to the people of God today?” He answered immediately: “Our accountability to God.” “Why do you look down on your brother? For we shall all stand before God’s judgement seat. It is written ‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.’ So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God” (Romans 14:10-12). From time to time, if we stay in the Lord’s church long enough, each one of us will receive a disappointment from not getting something we had our heart set on. We will be denied some program or event or facility that was dear to us. Nothing tells the story about our maturity like the way we handle our disappointment. Let us grow up into maturity. Let us be strong in the Lord and thus be able to help others coming behind us. After five years as Director of Missions for the 100 Southern Baptist churches of metro New Orleans, Joe retired on June 1, 2009.

Helping kids with “Emotional Concussions” Linda Jacobs

n our world today, many children experience what is known as an emotional concussion. Emotional concussions can be just as lethal, and sometimes even more so, than a physical concussion.

Parenting in the valley of dry bones

T

Kim Ransleben

here are moments as a parent when you realize you’ve done a lot less clapping for your kids than you have disciplining them for sin. It can feel like all you do is battle them between errands and events, pick-ups and dropoffs, and much of what you battle lies where you cannot reach, inside hearts which you feel so helpless to change. How can we enjoy our children in those moments when we can’t even think of them without fear of what might come?

Another valley the same I have found it helpful to remember another hard place, a place where a man faced a dead, barren valley, helpless to change anything on his own. In Ezekiel 37, we read that God himself set Ezekiel down in the middle of the valley of dry bones. There was no sign of life, which is a lot like we can feel when faced with our children’s sins. Sometimes there are so many it’s often hard to even know where to begin—whether squabbles over a toy no one wanted the day before, or the refusal to say “thank you” when they should, or the incessant complaining when they don’t get what they want. It seems that everywhere you turn there is no hope to be found. As they age, the subject matter only gets more complicated and the consequences more life-altering. An attitude of superiority and callousness toward another’s suffering makes you wonder where your tender-hearted son went. They have friends who trouble you, tweets that alarm you, secrets that worry you. It all combines into one big valley of dust and death. Imagine gazing at a valley full of it and hearing the Lord ask you as he did Ezekiel, “Can these bones live?” That valley was over Ezekiel’s head, and parenting is over ours. He doesn’t know how to make the bones live, but he knows who does. “O Lord God, you know,” Ezekiel says (Ezekiel 37:3). God brings Ezekiel into the miracle of resurrection by telling him to do what he cannot do … speak life. Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord. (Ezekiel 37:4–6)

INSPIRATIONAL STORIES, MESSAGES, POEMS & SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES

and in the lives of our children. So often, we’ve seen them walk through the motions of a gospelcentered life, doing what they “know” is right, but without the power of the Spirit. They have the appearance of life and all the right structures in place, but the heart is not beating. They said they were sorry. They picked up their toys with force and temper. They mouthed “yes, sir.” Though you’ve taught them the form of what to feel, do and say, you recognize in these moments how helpless you are to change their hearts. This is when we need the same thing Ezekiel did that day in the valley. Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live. (Ezekiel 37:9) God made them live. God, being rich in mercy, promised that he would restore Israel. He would give them life, fill them with his Spirit, make them his people. Isn’t that all we really want for our kids? We want their hearts to be his, not just their motions. We want God’s kingdom to come in them and through them. We want them to treasure Jesus above all things. And what was true for Ezekiel’s day is still true for ours. The life for which we long comes by speaking of the words of God—by sharing, again and again, the word of Christ.

He knows what to do Jesus has gone into the barren field, to the place where death once reigned, and he emerged victorious. He is the Resurrection and the Life. He is the one who makes alive. God didn’t tell Ezekiel to first bring life and then speak. It is the speaking of the words of God that brought the life, and that is the only way we can move toward the hearts of our children with hope-filled steps. We can face the areas of sinfulness in them we once feared, convinced that the God who speaks life is able to breathe life into them. He is able to make them know him and live for him forever. He is the one who said the harvest of his people is plentiful, greater than the number of stars in the sky. He is the one who sent his only Son that your son or daughter might proclaim the wonders of his grace. Teach the truths of the gospel to your children “seventy-seven times” (Matthew 18:21–22). Go into the chaotic, death-filled valley of your kids’ sins and walk amongst it all because you know that every raindrop that falls on the earth today shows his mercy toward those who’ve rejected him (Matthew 5:45). Serve them with peace and humility because you can smell the breakfast cooking on the beach for a man who, three times, denied even knowing Jesus (John 21:9– 19). Speak confidently of God’s power over every competing rule, including your child’s heart. The breath of god Do not fear the death you see in their lives. And as he speaks, Ezekiel hears the sound of God knows what to do with it. After all, dry bones creation happening again, as from the dust, bone are all he’s ever had to work with in his people. rattles against bone. Emotional concussions occur when young children: Live in homes controlled by alcohol, drugs, explosive tempers Live in homes full of stress Live with dysfunctional adults Have exposure to people who are physically, emotionally, and/or sexually abusive • Experience the divorce of their parents

• • • •

From the ACEs Too High website we find, “The life-in-dysfunction emotional concussion is a day-in-day-out brain bludgeoning by stress-induced hormones of adrenaline and cortisol. It wires developing brains for flight, fight or freeze. It can set people up to pass on the family legacy of dysfunction.” Very few people pay any attention to the emotional concussions our kids are saddled with on a daily basis. Even though the kids who live in the middle of these battlefields and are injured emotionally every day of their young lives, most of their cries go unheard. Checking for concussions Unlike a physical concussion where a coach or someone checks a child’s pupils to see if they are dilated, holds up 2 or 3 fingers to make sure the kid isn’t seeing double, and asks them a few questions to make sure the child is cognizant, no one checks the kid who has an emotional concussion. There is no concern that the child has another new dad in the home. No one checks to see if the child is home alone late into the night because mom has to work two jobs to make ends meet. No one notices it is the same kid who is in trouble all the time. Also, unlike a physical concussion where a kid is taken out of the game and must have a doctor’s permission to return, a child with an emotional concussion is sent right back into the emotional mayhem. There are no do-overs or timeouts for these kids. Most of them have no coach or outside adult who will oversee their wounds. Mostly, they are just patted on the head, told to stop their unruly behavior, get themselves straightened up and get back in the game. Emotional concussions cause a lot of damage to a child. Many become dysfunctional early on and carry that dysfunction into their adult lives. As teens they may: • Contemplate or succeed in committing suicide • Get involved in drugs • Become alcoholics • Become active sexually early on and end up as pregnant teens • Become cutters • Bully other kids • Drop out of school Many children of divorce have emotional concussions. And, like physical concussions can run the gambit of being light or severe, so do emotional concussions. For the child of divorce who has a support system and concerned adults outside the home they will not have a severe emotional concussion. For kids who have warring parents, no support system outside the home and are stuck right in the middle of the war zone, their emotional concussion is more severe. Some kids will never completely recover and will carry the scars of the emotional concussion with them for the rest of their lives. It will affect everything they attempt to do. What can we do? Children with emotional concussions need the church to step up and love on them. They need a safe haven where they can rest, relax and get a dose of Biblical truths to help heal their souls. These kids need help controlling their emotions and their behaviors. From Kidlutions we read, “The more out of control a child gets, the more she looks to us to demonstrate a sense of calm. When our behavior starts to mirror that of the child who is on a slippery slope to emotional mayhem, there is little hope left to assist her.” While there are no quick evaluations such as holding up three fingers to see if the child with an emotional concussion is seeing straight, we can be there for the child. We can be interested in their lives outside the church. We can offer hope and encouragement. We can remember scriptures that speak to such things as hope. “Hope deferred makes a heart sick…” Proverbs 13:12 In the long run, emotional concussions can be just as severe as a physical concussion. They can leave a child crippled emotionally for the rest of their lives.

The pure in heart will see God (Scripture: Matthew 5:8)

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

“T

hey will see God” is truly among the most amazing things ever promised in scripture. They will see Go, this is the greatest reward possible. To see God, this is what we long for. This is the final destinationand our goal of our lives. To see God, is to enjoy him forever. 1. The heart: The heart in scripture is the centre of our being. The heart is the centre of life. The heart is the seat of emotion. The Bible calls the heart the place of feeling, of love, of joy, of peaceful understanding. It is the centre of the will. It is from where we set the course of our lives. Life not only has its source in the heart. Even though as long as it is beating is a sign of physical life, so also the heart is the centre of the soul and spiritual life. The heart, in scripture, is the soul-centre. Matthew 15:19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. That’s the Lord Jesus’ assessment of the human condition. His list is a sort of negative summary of the 10 commandments. The heart is desperately wicked. The Pharisees made all sorts of laws about cleansing and washing like the washing of bowls and plates and hands. They were concerned with the outward symbols of religion. They forgot the weightier matters of the Law: love God and love of neighbour. So when the Lord says, “Blessed are the pure in heart” he ishighlighting the heart and showing that the Christian faith is one that concerns first of all the heart. 2. What is that purity? In the Old Testament the laws are full of regulations and stipulations concerning cleansings and washings. Religious and moral demands were portrayed by these laws. The items of the temple were to be washed. The sacrifices, the organs, had to be washed. The Lord says to Abraham in Genesis 17:1 “I am God Almighty; walk before me and be blameless.”That word blameless is purity. It means singleness of heart. It means trustworthy and without hypocrisy. It means single-eyed devotion and not serving two masters. Palm 24:3-4Who may ascend the hill of the LORD?Who may stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idolor swear by what is false. Who can stand in God’s holy place? It is the one whose heart and aim are one. Whose direction of life is single-minded purpose to serve the Lord. We are not walking blamelessly if only the external actions of our lives are in line with the will of God.Jesus quotes Isaiah in Matthew 15:8 “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Blessings and divine favour are for the pure in heart. “Pure in heart” has two interrelated meanings. It means inner moral purity as opposed to merely external piety; it also means single-mindedness, a heart free from deceit. It is impossible to have one characteristic without the other. The one who is single-minded in commitment to the kingdom and its righteousness will also be inwardly pure. The pure in heart are those who are blameless, who are sincere in their devotion to Christ, whose emotions are ruled by love for God and for neighbour, whose interest is focused on Jesus and his commands. 3. The vison – See God: We long to be in God’s presence. And yet it seems impossible. He dwells in unapproachable light, no one has seen God or can see him.But the scripture teaches that we can and will see God. Hebrews 12:14 “Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.” To see God requires holiness, pure hearts, undivided loyalty to the Lord and sincerity of heart. This is not about rules, or decency, or morality, or some intellectual interest in the gospel. This is about our hearts. There is no connection between black and white. There is no link between Christ and Satan. There is no association between the table of the Lord and the table of demons. Only those who have pure hearts can see him. Be perfect like the father is perfect. Be holy as the father is holy. Jesus has said that no one has seen the Father, but the Son who is with him. Yet in John 14:9 Jesus said: “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.” The promise is partly fulfilled here and now. Hebrews 12:2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Any attempt at self-cleansing only exposes the foulness of the heart. The only way to a clean heart is found inPsalm 51:10, “Create in me a pure heart, O God,and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”The way to a clean heart is by the power of the Holy Spirit. Only his presence can cleanse the heart. Only his work can purify the centre of our being. That is our only confidence. That is our only hope. God is working in you. He is renewing you, so get rid of sin and all that entangles us. Put on Christ. The promise is absolutely sure. You are going to see God!

Jayalalithaa becomes Tamil Nadu CM for fifth time Chennai, May 23 (ianS): AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalithaa was sworn in as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu for the fifth time on Saturday, within a fortnight of the Karnataka High Court acquitting her in a corruption case. Jayalalithaa, 67, was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor K. Rosaiah at the packed Madras University Centenary Auditorium. The governor also administered oath of office to the council of ministers in two batches. Including herself, Jayalalithaa will head a 29-member government in the 14th Tamil Nadu assembly. While dropping M.S.M. Anand, minister for forests, and P. Chendur Pandian (without any portfolio) in the O. Panneerselvam cabinet, she retained all other ministers without changing their portfolios. Jayalalithaa would, among others, look after the home and general administration departments. Panneerselvam will continue to hold the finance and public works portfolios. The colour green dominated at the swearing-in as Jayalalithaa's saree, the ring on her finger with a big green stone and the backdrop of the stage were all in green. Her close aide Sasikala too wore a green saree. It was not immediately clear why all this was in green, though it is said to be one of Jayalalithaa's favourite colours. The swearing-in also

Panneerselvam again reverts to No.2 position

Former chief minister O. Panneerselvam bows in front of AIADMK leader Jayaram Jayalalitha after she took oath as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in Chennai on Saturday, May 23. An appeals court acquitted the powerful politician in southern India of corruption charges earlier this month, clearing the way for her to return to public office. She was forced last year to step down as the highest elected official in Tamil Nadu after a Bangalore court in September convicted her of possessing wealth disproportionate to her income and sentenced her to four years in prison. created an avoidable controversy after a short version of the national anthem was played on the occasion. Before the ceremony, it was announced that the shorter version of the national anthem would be played followed by Tamizh Thai Vazhthu (Invocation to Mother Tamil). To the surprise of many, just two lines of the national anthem -- the first line and the last line -- were played and it was followed by Tamizh Thai Vazhthu. After all the ministers were sworn

in, the full version of the national anthem was played. On both the occasions, when the national anthem was played, people present in the auditorium stood in silence. According to a former bureaucrat, playing the shorter version of the national anthem was not wrong and was permissible. State government officials were not available for clarification. Another unique aspect was the swearing-in of the council of ministers in two batches of 14 members each,

after Jayalalithaa took oath. The mood at the venue was festive and the joy was infectious. Members of the AIADMK were all smiles though the event ended very quickly. This was quite in contrast to the highly emotional swearing-in of Panneerselvam as chief minister last year following the conviction of Jayalaltihaa by a Bengaluru court. Panneerselvam, who had then replaced Jayalalithaa as chief minister, and his cabinet colleagues wept openly during the swearingin ceremony at the time.

A large number of people from various parts of the state lined both sides of the road starting from Jayalalithaa's residence till the venue of the swearing-in. Pon Radhakrishnan, the union minister of state for road transport, shipping and highways, and other leaders such as H. Raja, L. Ganesan, and Sarathkumar attended the ceremony. Chennai, May 23 (ianS): For the second time in his political career, AIADMK leader O. Panneerselvam was Tamil Nadu's stop gap chief minister till party's general secretary J. Jayalalithaa was acquitted in a corruption case. He now reverts to the No.2 slot in the Tamil Nadu government. Last September Panneerselvam, 64, a staunch loyalist of Jayalalithaa took over as the chief minister after she was sentenced by a court in Bangalore to a four-year jail term and a Rs.100 crore fine in a disproportionate assets case. Panneerselvam operated from his office in the finance ministry to show his "reverence" to his Jayalalithaa. He also said that his government was functioning under Jayalalithaa's guidance. But it was not a smooth ride for Panneerselvam as the opposition charged him with poor governance and agriculture minister `Agri' S.S. Krishnamoorthy lost his job over graft charges. Even the welfare measures initiated by the Jayalalithaa government like opening of subsidised Amma Canteens and a Metro rail system, among others, got delayed giving ammunition to the opposition parties to fire their guns at the ruling party. The heir apparent of the main opposition DMK, M.K. Stalin, even wrote an open letter to Panneerselvam, saying: "Tamil Nadu is in the ICU and its vital signs are a cause for extreme concern." ers attended the function. Special prayers were offered in temples by AIADMK cadres. The AIADMK had won the 2011 assembly election and Jayalalithaa was subsequently sworn in as chief minister. In September 2014, she was disqualified after a

The government also twice postponed the much-expected Global Investors Meet after holding roadshows overseas and spending around Rs.100 crore on it. Industry turned cautious about investing in the state because of the political drift. The government seemed to have come to a standstill. The party and the ministers went into a prayer mode for their leader's acquittal. Panneerselvam wrote several letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issues impacting the state and the people. As he also held the finance portfolio, Panneerselvam also presented the budget for 2015-16. Representing the Bodinayakanur constituency, Panneerselvam is a farmer from Theni district and is known as OPS in the party. He entered politics in 1996. In 2001, he was elected to the assembly from Periakulam and became the public works department minister. Panneerselvam was the first person from the Thevar community to become the chief minister of Tamil Nadu in 2001. He was also leader of opposition when AIADMK lost power in 2006. Panneerselvam had become chief minister in similar circumstances in 2001 for a brief period. Born in 1951 in Periayakulam in Theni, Panneerselvam tried his hand in farming after graduating but later ventured into politics.

Bengaluru court sentenced her to a four-year jail term and fined her Rs.100 crore in an 18-year-old disproportionate assets case. The Karnataka High Court upheld her appeal and acquitted her of all charges. AIADMK lawmakers, at a meeting at the par-

'Nothing illegal on govt servants being placed under suspension on the day of their superanuation' Chennai, May 23 (PTi): The Madras High Court bench in Madurai has declined to quash the retirement-time suspension order of a Civil Supplies Corporation officer, saying there was nothing illegal about government servants being suspended on the day of their superannuation. "There is nothing illegal about government servants being denied peaceful retirement and being placed under suspension on the day of their superannuation," Justice S Vaidyanathan said while dismissing the petition of one V Murugan who was slapped with five charges a few days before his retirement on April 1 this year

and placed under suspension on March 30. Stating that there was no hard and fast rule that an employee cannot be placed under suspension on the last day of his service, the court said if the petitioner's prayer was allowed, "then persons like him may commit misconduct during the last month of their service and take a plea that no charge memo or suspension order can be levied against the employee." Murugan, who was Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation Officer, had challenged the validity of charge memos and the suspension order. He sought a direction from the court to quash the the orders and

direct the authorities to extend all monetary benefits, pending salary, leave benefits and all other terminal benefits with continuity of service to him. Noting that the regional manager of the Corporation was competent to issue suspension orders, the department said one of the charges against Murugan was that he had signed the attendance register even without attending office. Justice Vaidyanathan, who directed the authorities to review the suspension order periodically, said the authorities could issue him a charge sheet and complete the inquiry as early as possible, 'preferably within one year.'

Planning to buy drugs? You need a prescription if US has banned them new Delhi, May 23 (hT): If the drug you consume is banned in US, UK, Canada, Japan, European Union or Australia, you may need to get a new prescription. The government is streamlining the drug regulatory system to filter drugs with serious side effects, based on their ban status from six major drug regulators globally. For instance, Analgin, a pain killer, was banned in the US and Sweden in the late 1990s as it triggered a sharp fall in white blood cells, but is still sold in India. Henceforth, such drugs

would not be sold here until clinical data proves them safe. The move was triggered after the government learned about Danish firm Lundbeck’s anti-depression drug Deanxit, which is banned in Denmark but allowed be exported. “We are looking at developing a higher level mechanism to filter out drugs that have been banned by top drug regulators,” said GN Singh, drug controller general of India (DCGI). “However, the planning is being done by health ministry and we are waiting for a draft from the

department.” DCGI has directed all companies to conduct clinical trials of generic medicines and seek national drug regulatory approval within 18 months. “Outdated drugs and formulations should be seriously re-looked at to shut out drugs that trigger serious side-effects,” said Anoop Misra, head of department of diabetes and metabolic diseases, Fortis Hospitals. A health ministry official said over 300 drugs in the Indian market don’t have clinical trial data.

Congress national spokesperson Tom Vadakkan said defence deals during the UPA rule were delayed due to strict adherence to procedure and principles of transparency. Addressing a press conference here, Vadakkan said the Prime Minister's Office had a vast sphere of influence in the defence ministry too. Criticising the manner in which the deal for purchase of 36 Rafale fighters from French company Dassault was conducted, Vadakkan hinted that a Comptroller Auditor General scrutiny would bring

'Modi must remember he is PM of India, not BJP' Panaji, May 23 (ianS): Narendra Modi has the aura of a "rockstar", but he should also behave like the prime minister of India and not as the prime minister of the BJP during foreign tours, the Congress said here on Saturday. Addressing a press conference at the party's state headquarters here, Congress spokesperson Tom Vadakkan said it was wrong of the prime minister to say that Indians considered it a curse to be born in India before 2014, the year when the Modi-led government rode to power in the general election. "He's a rockstar, yes I agree," Vadakmore to the fore about the deal struck by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his France visit last month. "Scam is something when we know (more about it)... You dont know the price. When you don't know the price what do you make out of it. See transparency is the order of the day. If you do not know

kan said, when told about the excitement Modi generated during his foreign visits. The spokesperson, however, sought to remind Modi that he was the prime minister of India and not of the Bharatiya Janata Party. "He is the prime minister of this country. He is not the prime minister of the BJP.He has to hold that in his mind as he speaks."He talks on foreign soil, he criticises, we accept it. We do complain, but you can't say that to be born in India before 2014 was a curse. If this is what the prime minister says, we have nothing to add," the Congress leader said.

the price, then how do you decide, how do you compare?" Vadakkan said. "The message is loud and clear, it is a PMO centric government... Who runs the defence ministry, we really want to know," Vadakkan said. He also said the reason why defence deals were delayed when the United Pro-

gressive Alliance's A.K. Antony was defence minister was because of the latter's insistence on following set procedure and insistence on transparency. Parrikar's 'terrorist' comment insulted military Meanwhile, the congress said that the Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar

"insulted" India's military, defence and police personnel when he suggested that terrorists should be used to neutralise terrorists, "Stranger than fiction. If the defence minister of this country insults the military, defence, police personnel of this country that you hire terrorists to... it just beats my logic," the party's national spokesperson said. Parrikar, on a national television channel, had said: "You have to neutralise terrorists through terrorists only... we should do it. Why my soldier has to bleed all the time?" Vadakkan said Parrikar's theory of neutralising terrorists by using terrorists was "very strange". "The police force is not required, the military is not required. You hire terrorists to kill terrorists. Very strange. I don't know (from) which part of the world he has learned this," he said

Centre's notification in AAP- Muslim body to counter religious LG tussle divides legal eagles discrimination with 'Gandhigiri'

new Delhi, May 23 (ianS): The Centre's notification placing bureaucrats under the Lt. Governor's administrative control has further intensified the turf war between Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Najeeb Jung, leaving legal eagles divided on the issue. A section of lawyers felt there was nothing wrong in the government issuing the notification with former Lok Sabha Secretary General Subhash Kashyap saying what the government has done is clarify the constitutional position. Others feel that it was an exercise of power by the government which may not stand judicial scrutiny. Holding that the issuance of the notification was "absolutely justified", jurist Shanti Bhushan said, "Only the Lt. Governor has the power to post and transfer the bureaucrats on the direction of the central government. He (Kejriwal) should realize that Delhi is a union territory." Agreeing with him, former judge of Delhi High court and now a senior counsel in the apex court Rupinder Singh Sodhi said: "I think Lt. Governor was al-

ways right and the power of services are always with the President which are delegated to the Lt. Governor." Taking a contrary view, senior counsels K.K.Venugopal termed the central government notification as "unconstitutional and void", while Rajeev Dhavan said, "These are unconstitutional. Such a change can only be made by the paraphernalia and not by a notification." Agreeing with them, former solicitor general, Gopal Subramanium described the notification as "illegal and unconstitutional",

Kejriwal calls special assembly session The AAP government on Saturday decided to call a two-day special session of the Delhi assembly to discuss the Centre's notification that stripped it of various powers. "A special session has been called on May 26 and May 27 to discuss the Centre's notification which has taken away power from the Delhi assembly," the Delhi government said in a statement. The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

MuMbai, May 23 (ianS): Shaken by the incident of a Muslim MBA being denied a job in a Hindu-owned diamond export company on religious grounds, the Indian Union Muslim League announced on Saturday that it would counter the issue with "Gandhigiri". They said this would strengthen the communal bonds within the country's commercial capital. IUML President Pervez Lakdawala said that henceforth Muslim-owned companies would gladly offer employment to 10 Hindus for every Muslim candidate rejected by a Hindu-owned company on any grounds. "Rejection of employment on religious grounds is very dangerous to the secular fabric and the country's unity and integrity," Lakdawala told media persons here on Saturday. "It is also a major challenge to the constitutional and religious pillars of the world's largest democracy... Such things cannot be tolerated." He was accompanied by All India Milli Council (AIMC) general secretary M.A. Khalid and other

prominent community leaders, who discussed the manner in which a Muslim youth from Kurla, Zeeshan Ali Khan, was rejected by Hari Krishna Exports Pvt. Ltd. The candidate, like two of his friends and co-applicants, holds MBA qualification and the rejection was purely because he followed Islam, they said. The company is headquartered in the BandraKurla Complex which is a cosmopolitan business hub in central Mumbai. Lakdawala said this is not the first time such a thing may have happened, but this time it has come to light with evidence for which the media and social media should get full credit. "We follow the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and so we shall counter this trend with 'Gandhigiri'. So all companies owned by Muslims will give jobs to 10 Hindus for every Muslim rejected on religious grounds by Hindu-owned companies," Lakdawala said. Khalid termed the issue as unfortunate and regressive in a democratic country which has made great

strides in different spheres and urged the central and state government to examine the matter thoroughly and take remedial measures. He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to set up an "Equal Opportunities Commission" to ensure that similar discrimination on any grounds could be prevented in future and the slogan of "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikaas" could be implemented in letter and spirit. The IUML and AIMC have also written letters to President Pranab Mukherjee, prime minister, chief justice of India, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, chief justice of Bombay High Court, labour minister, National Human Rights Commission and the National Commission of Minorities seeking their intervention in the matter, said Khalid. Meanwhile, Mukund Mani and Omkar Bansode, who were offered jobs in Hari Krishna Exports Pvt. Ltd. have decided to reject the offers in protest against the refusal of placement to their friend and batchmate, Khan.

‘Isolating North Korea not working’ PYONGYANG, MAY 23 (AP): Iconic women's rights activist Gloria Steinem may be in North Korea, but she is as outspoken as ever. In an interview with The Associated Press, the 81-year-old feminism pioneer said she decided to join a group of women in a rare and in some quarters highly controversial walk across the Demilitarized Zone dividing North and South Korea because she thinks efforts to force change by isolating the North have failed. But, she said, she has no intention of letting the North's leadership off the hook for its own human rights record. Steinem and a group of 29 other women from 15 countries are set to walk across the DMZ on Sunday after obtaining a rare green light from both governments. The permission didn't come easily — they had to alter their plans to go through the symbolic truce village of Panmunjom, where the Korean War armistice was signed in 1953, because officials in Seoul and the United Nations Command responsible for security in the area said they could not guarantee the group's safety. Instead, the women will take a route that links the two Koreas to the Kaesong

industrial complex, a joint North-South business venture near the border. "We paid for tickets, we came here we had no idea whether we could actually cross the DMZ or not," Steinem told the AP in Pyongyang before the group set off for Kaesong. "Here we are doing this with the consent of two opposed governments. I think that is quite remarkable in itself. North and South Korean women can't walk across the DMZ legally. We from other countries can. So I feel we are walking on their behalf." Steinem, a key figure in the women's rights movement in the United States for decades, decided to join the walk after being approached by organizer Christine Ahn, a KoreanAmerican peace activist. She said she is old enough to remember the 1950-53 Korean War, and she believes that women can play an important role in pushing governments to take more effective action to bring peace. She said she also feels strongly that efforts by Washington and its allies to isolate Pyongyang have failed. "The example of the isolation of the Soviet Union or other examples of isolation haven't worked very

well in my experience," she said. "Isolating North Korea clearly hasn't worked. I think we have to go ahead with the idea of first do no harm. We haven't done any harm, and it might turn out

to be a good thing." Steinem quickly added, however, that coming to North Korea does not mean she is endorsing Pyongyang's policies or ignoring its domestic hu-

man rights record. "I don't think that anybody is saying that because Gloria Steinem is coming, North Korea is fine," she said. "Everybody knows what the problems are. In

some situations, I suppose that might be a danger. But I don't see it here and I really don't think we would have gotten all the permissions that we needed if other people saw that danger."

The plan to walk across the DMZ has been looked on very differently in the North and South. On Thursday, North Korea's state media reported on a peace symposium held by the women in Pyongyang with representatives of North Korean women's groups, saying they branded the U.S. "a kingdom of terrorism and a kingpin of human rights abuses." South Korea's Yonhap news agency, meanwhile, picking up on the North Korean reports, quoted academics in the South saying the group's activities would not help efforts to pressure the North to give up its nuclear weapons program or improve its human rights record. "Those words were never uttered," Ahn, the walk organizer, told AP. "We spoke about the impact of militarism around the world, including in Liberia, Colombia, Japan, Northern Ireland as well as the United States. We are operating in an environment where multiple sides will take our words out of context to advance their political agendas." Steinem dismissed suggestions the group, which also includes two Nobel Peace Prize winners, was deliberately massaging its message to please their North Korean hosts.

"I haven't had to censor myself at all. We've made it a point not to meet with high officials or to play basketball with high officials," she said, referring to former NBA star Dennis Rodman's trip to Pyongyang, when he played basketball and sang happy birthday to leader Kim Jong Un. "Obviously, there's certain things I won't do." She said she refused to bow or stand before statues of the leaders and be photographed, which is often expected of foreign visitors. "At the airport, it's an immediate surprise that you are not allowed to bring books in, or DVDs, and that you have to turn in your cellphone and get a different chip in your cellphone," she said. "This is not good ... The balance between the individual and the community is supposed to be even. And it is out of balance." But, while she sees change in North Korea as a long process, she said she believes the walk across the DMZ is a significant step forward. "We are being met by a couple of thousand women on the other side and a Catholic priest representing the Vatican. That's the first time I've ever been received by the Vatican," she quipped. "It's amazing. It's really, really amazing."

Mexico: Fierce gunbattle Myanmar president signs off on controversial population law kills 43 in cartel territory ECUANDUREO, MAY 23 (AP): The latest in a series of clashes between Mexican authorities and a powerful, fast-growing drug cartel turned into the deadliest confrontation in recent memory, with 42 suspected gang gunmen and one Federal Police officer killed during a three-hour firefight at a remote western ranch. The battle on Friday followed two other recent unprecedented attacks by the cartel, one that killed 15 state police officers and another that shot down an army helicopter with a rocket launcher for the first time in Mexico's history. The death toll from all three is at least 76 people at a time when the Mexican government claims crime is falling dramatically and the interior minister recently insisted the country "is not in flames." Photographs from the scene showed bodies, some with semi-automatic rifles and others without weapons, lying in fields, next to farm equipment and on a bloodstained patio strewn with

clothes, mattresses and sleeping bags. Video obtained by The Associated Press showed federal police officers coming under fire and bodies strewn throughout the ranch. The suspects were members of "a criminal organization whose main operating zone is Jalisco state,"NationalSecurityCommissioner Monte Alejandro Rubidosaid.Hedidnotspecifically the Jalisco New Generation cartel, but the drug gang dominates the area where the battle erupted and has grown rapidly in recent years to become one of Mexico's biggest organized crime groups. The gunbattle started when soldiers, federal police and investigators were checking out a report that armed men had suddenly appeared on a ranch, Rubido said. Federal forces on the way to the ranch met a truck full of armed men who opened fire, and when the government force chased the gunmen onto the ranch, they came under heavy fire from others, the security chief said. "The rest of the presumed criminals on the

property started to attack with intensity," Rubido said. A federal police officer died trying to help a colleague wounded in the shootout. The federal force called for air and ground support, which included a Federal Police helicopter. The size of the ranch, 112 hectares (277 acres), complicated the battle, which lasted intermittently for three hours in three different locations, Rubido said. The lop-sided casualty count was similar to a controversial case last June 30 in Mexico state, where the army said 22 alleged criminals died in a shootout with troops, while only one soldier was injured. An investigation by The Associated Press revealed that many of suspects had been killed after they surrendered. Rubido emphasized that both state and national human rights teams were dispatched immediately to investigate Friday's bloodshed at the ranch, which residents of the area said is called Rancho del Sol.

YANGON, MAY 23 (AP): Myanmar's president has signed off on a law requiring some mothers to space their children three years apart despite objections by a visiting senior U.S. diplomat and rights activists, who worry it could be used not only to repress women, but also religious and ethnic minorities. The Population Control Health Care Bill — drafted under pressure from hard-line Buddhist monks with a staunchly anti-Muslim agenda — was passed by parliamentarians last month. President Thein Sein gave his stamp of approval on Tuesday, state-run media said Saturday, a day after U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Anthony Blinken warned during a face-toface meeting of the potential dangers. As predominantly Buddhist Myanmar started moving from dictatorship to democracy four years ago, newfound freedoms of expression lifted the lid on deep-seeded hatred for minority Muslims — including Rohingya Muslims

now arriving on Southeast Asian shores in crowded, rickety boats. Many are fleeing persecution and violence that has left up to 280 people dead and forced another 140,000 from their homes in western Rakhine state. They are living under apartheid-like conditions in dusty, crowded camps, with little access to education or adequate medical care. They also have little freedom of movement, having to pay hefty bribes if they want to pass police barricades, even for emergencies. The population law — which carries no punitive measures — gives regional authorities the power to implement birth-spacing guidelines in areas with high rates of population growth. Though the government says the law is aimed at bringing down maternal and infant mortality rates, activists argue that it steps on women's reproductive rights and can be used to suppress the growth of marginalized groups. have repeatedly warned that Muslims, with their high birthrates, could take over the country of 50 million even though they currently represent less than 10 percent of the population. "It's very disappointing," Khin Lay, a women's rights activist, said of the president's decision to sign off on the law. "If the government wants to pro-

tect women, they should strengthen laws already in place to do that." Blinken, who met with Thein Sein, the army's commander-in-chief and other top government officials during a two-day visit to Myanmar this week, said he expressed "deep concern" about the law and three others in the assembly aimed at protecting race and religion.

"The legislation contains provisions that can be enforced in a manner that would undermine reproductive rights, women's rights and religious freedom," Blinken told reporters Friday. "We shared the concerns that these bills can exacerbate ethic and religious divisions and undermine the country's efforts to promote tolerance and diversity."

Hiding true colours Thai year-old coup imposes superficial calm makes you feel immoral

BANGKOK, MAY 23 (AP): Shortly after seizing power in a coup that followed months of debilitating street protests, Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha vowed to end Thailand's decade of political upheaval once and for all. In his words, "to bring everything out in the open and fix it." One year later, the military can boast it has restored stability and kept this Southeast Asian nation calm. But the bitter societal fissures that helped trigger the putsch are still simmering below the surface, unresolved. "Our differences have just been pushed under the rug by a junta that prohibits freedom of expression. Nothing has been done to address the root causes of Thailand's deep divide," said Sunai Phasuk, a senior researcher for Human Rights Watch. He said what is happening now is the imposition of peace by force. "There's no guarantee that whenever the junta lets go of their iron grip, the country will not to fall back into conflict," he said. On Friday, the anniversary of the takeover, police quashed a small student demonstration in Bangkok, triggering scuffles. At least 37 people were detained over-

night and released Saturday after 11 hours of questioning. Seven others who staged a similar protest in the northeastern city of Khon Kaen were also freed. Speaking to reporters the same day, Prayuth acknowledged that seizing power was wrong. But he nevertheless defended the overthrow of Yingluck Shinawatra's government, saying "we cannot fix the past, but we can build for the future." The problem, critics argue, is that the junta may be sowing the seeds of more conflict by building that future on its own terms — with reform committee, a rubberstamp legislature, and no input from the Pheu Thai party it toppled or their supporters, who likely still represent a majority of the electorate. The latest point of contention, a constitutional draft released in April, has been criticized even by groups who supported the putsch. If approved, the charter would significantly weaken the power of political parties, shifting it to unelected agencies like a new "National Moral Assembly" empowered to investigate politicians for offenses as minor as "impolite" speech — ultimately initiat-

ing the path to their removal. The drafters say such reforms are designed to check abuse by corrupt politicians, a problem acknowledged by all sides. But Pheu Thai officials say the real aim is to prevent their party from governing effectively if it wins again. "Nobody knows how these agencies would be made accountable themselves," said Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, a former premier who was

among those who called for Yingluck to resign before the coup. Speaking of the junta, he added: "They should be more concerned with making elected governments more accountable, rather than making them weaker." Last week, the military government announced it would subject the draft to a referendum. Sunai said that posed a dilemma. "If you vote yes, you end up with a Frankenstein constitution that

undercuts liberal democracy. If you vote no, they'll have to go back to the drawing board, and Prayuth will just stay in power longer." The junta has spoken of holding nationwide elections in late 2016, but no date has been set and some believe it could govern for years. "The big picture for now is, we're still in a lockdown ... there's still a huge question mark over the future," said Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a political science professor at Chulalongkorn University. The junta has not been helped by Thailand's sputtering economy, which has largely remained flat since the coup, with exports and investment down. Thitinan said that generals "were not meant to govern Thailand. Some have lost their way. They're not used to accountability, or being in the public eye, being asked questions." And they do not tolerate dissent. According to iLaw, a nonprofit group that monitors legal cases, at least 751 people have been summoned by the junta for what the military calls "attitude adjustments." Before Friday, at least 428 had been arrested, 166 for expressing opinions perceived as critical; many

are supporters of the ousted government, along with students, writers and academics — some of whom have fled into exile. Thailand's junta argues it is working to create the foundation for a stable democracy, and while it does, liberties and freedom of speech that could sow division must be curtailed. "We need an environment that is conducive to dialogue, where people can speak to one another," said Maj. Gen. Weerachon Sukhondhapatipak, a junta spokesman. "We're not saying that they would not have any freedom at all in future, we're not saying that this country will be in this environment forever," he said. "We're trying to create ... understanding." Yingluck's former Education Minister Chaturon Chaisang, who is facing 14 years in prison for not reporting to a junta summons after the coup and then criticizing the takeover, disagreed. There has been no "attempt to address the reconciliation process at all," he said. "There has never been any discussion (with us) from people in charge on what the roots of the problem are."

WAshiNGtON, MAY 23 (iANs): Hiding your true colours may do more harm than good as new research shows that we feel impure and immoral when we violate our true sense of self. Shakespeare's advice: be true to yourself, has an psychological rooting as the drive for authenticity or living in accordance with our sense of self, emotions, and values is fundamental to our lifestyle. This sense of impurity may lead us to engage in cleansing or charitable behaviours as a way of clearing our conscience. "Our work shows that feeling inauthentic is not a fleeting or cursory phenomenon -- it cuts to the very essence of what it means to be a moral person," explains psychological scientist Maryam Kouchaki of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Inauthenticity may have similar psychological consequences as immoral behaviours like lying or cheating since both types of behaviours are a violation of being true. Participants who wrote about a time they felt inauthentic reported feeling more out of touch with their true selves and more impure or tainted than participants who wrote about a time when they felt authentic. They also reported lower moral self-regard, rating themselves as less generous and cooperative, for example, than the authentic participants. "In order to be responsive to various demands from customers, co-workers, and upper management, individuals may find themselves behaving in ways that are not consistent with their 'true self'," Kouchaki noted. The findings were published in the journal Psychological Science.

ParIS, May 23 (IaNS): French Open defending champion Maria Sharapova said that she is happy to see other players get married or have a baby but wanted to stay focussed on tennis as it comes to herself. The world No. 2, who came to Paris with a clay

title won in Rome last week, has collected all four Grand Slam trophies since she claimed the maiden victory in 2004 in Wimbledon as a 17-year- old, including twice in Roland Garros, in 2012 and 2014. Talking about on-court life and offcourt happiness on Friday,

the 28-year-old Russian said: "We are athletes and we are here to do our jobs. We sometimes forget that tennis is quite a short period of our lives, and especially for women," Xinhua reported. "Maybe men last a little bit longer. For a woman that wants to have children

and a family, it can be quite tough to prolong your career," she said. Just 40 days ago, world No. 3 men's singles player Andy Murray got married with his long-time girlfriend, and the top seed here, Novak Djokovic became a dad last fall as his wife gave birth to a baby. "It's been great to see so many more family men on the tour. That's been nice," commented Sharapova. "But I'm not sure I like to use the word balance, because when you try to balance things out you're only just good at a couple of things." "I want to be great at one thing. I know it's sometimes impossible to be great at ten things. If I try to be great at ten other sports maybe I would be so-so. "I have chosen a sport that I could evolve in and be great at. I have been very committed to my sport and trying to be the best I can be at it. When I have the time to enjoy my life and to be happy away from the court," she said. Sharapova starts her defending campaign against Estonia's Kaia Kanepi in the French Open, which gets underway on Sunday.

I would never choose to leave Chelsea: Mourinho

loNDoN, May 23 (reuterS): Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho would not choose to leave the club he has just steered to another Premier League title but he is prepared to manage another English team, the Portuguese coach has told the BBC. Mourinho, 52, said in an interview with the Football Focus programme, to be shown on Saturday, that having come back to Stamford Bridge in 2013 for a second spell in charge he would only leave if owner Roman Abramovich did not want him. "I see myself coaching another club, yes, but I love Chelsea and I am in Mr Abramovich's hands and until then I'm here," he said. "The day Mr Abramovich thinks I'm not good enough for Chelsea, I want to work, and if possible in England too. "Until Mr Abramovich says, I don't see myself going. Any club

comes to me now and offers me a fantastic project, offers me twice my wages in the contract at Chelsea, no chance." Mourinho's first spell in charge from 2004 to 2007 ended when his relationship with Abramovich broke down but the former Porto manager has enjoyed a successful return to the club. Mourinho will receive a third Premier League winners' medal on Sunday but he is not feeling so charitable this time -- meaning no surprise souvenir for a lucky fan at Stamford Bridge. After claiming a second English title in 2006 following a 3-0 win against Manchester United, Mourinho launched his medal and blazer into the crowd. Chelsea host Sunderland in their final game of the season on Sunday where they will be presented with the Premier League trophy for the first

time since 2010. "My son now is collecting all my stuff," the Portuguese told a news conference on Friday. "He keeps everything. "At that time (2006) he was too young, but in this moment he is collecting everything. Shirts, medals -- he steals everything from me." Mourinho was named Premier League manager of the season for the third time following previous triumphs in 2005 and 2006. "I was not waiting for it, I was never manager of the month, but I'm happy with it," he said. "It's a club trophy, not an individual one. It's for me, my assistants, my players, everybody who works with me. It's something you don't just get by yourself. "It's the icing on the cake but I work for the cake. The Premier League is the real cake but obviously to be the manager of the season is nice."

lock horns with MI for IPL trophy Sunday, 24th May 2015

KolKata, May 23 (IaNS): In what could be deja vu from 2013, Eden Gardens will again host Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI), who will lock horns for the most coveted domestic prize, the Indian Premier League (IPL) title here on Sunday. While CSK have won the title twice, MI had clinched it once two years earlier. However, the road to the final was not easy for either of the two teams. Mumbai had a disastrous start to their campaign as they lost all of their first four matches. But just when things looked bleak for the Rohit Sharma-led outfit, the team bounced back with some panache as it won seven of its last nine group games to make it to the title round. They took along the momentum to the Wankhede stadium -- their home turf -- where they beat CSK by 25 runs in Qualifier 1 and

Lies will be exposed on court: Rafa Nadal

ParIS, May 23 (reuterS): One thing that has been consistent about Rafa Nadal's disappointing season so far has been his brutal honesty. After a recent defeat by Italian showman Fabio Fognini the 14-times grand slam champion described his feared forehand as "vulgar" while other defeats have prompted him to admit he is suffering from nerves and a loss of confidence. Hardly the language expected from one of the toughest competitors the sport has seen but Nadal says it is pointless trying to bluff his way through a poor spell. Speaking to reporters at the French Open on Friday where the 28-year-old will be gunning for a record extending 10th title, Nadal again pulled no punches. "I

say what I feel. I said a lot of times in my career I'm not gonna lie if it's not 100 percent necessary," he said. "I don't know if it's good or

bad, but at the end of the day you can lie here but you cannot lie on court. "If you say that you are great and you go on court

and you play against a good player, you don't lie. Otherwise you're gonna come back and gonna say, Okay, I was lying before. "I don't need to lie to create better expectations. I am being honest. When I say I don't know what's gonna happen, I really don't know what's gonna happen. "That doesn't mean that I don't have confidence in myself to try to be ready for it. I have to think that I am ready for it." With no titles on European clay this season and crushing defeats by Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Stanislas Wawrinka in the build-up to Roland Garros, most of the talk has been whether or not the Mallorcan is in decline. Defending women's champion Maria Sharapova said the doubters were being disrespecftul to a

player who has a 66-1 career record at Roland Garros, but her opinion is not shared by former men's champion Jim Courier. "What's interesting with Rafa is that he's so honest about what he's going through," he told Reuters. "Rafa has set himself up for the conversation because he talks about how he is not playing the big points well. "He says he doesn't have confidence and that his forehand is vulgar. He is initiating the discussion." Nadal will need that confidence to return quickly, with a possible quarterfinal against Djokovic on the horizon. "I would love to arrive to that match, but that's the quarter-finals and I didn't start the first round yet" the sixth seed said. "If I arrive to that match, we are going to have two days to talk about."

booked a place in the ultimate showdown. Chennai, on the other hand, had a consistent season as they finished atop the league table with 18 points from 14 games. But the heavyweights had a slip up enroute to the final, at the Wankhede, but recovered with a very clinical performance against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Friday night as they outdid Virat Kohli's side by three wickets in Ranchi. Considering the head to head battles, it is difficult to differentiate between the two franchises with Mumbai having clinched 11 games to CSK's 10. Thus a battle of the titans await the fans and supporters at Eden on Sunday as each side unleash their full fury to clinch the trophy on a wicket that has fulfilled expectations this tournament. "It is a different wicket than last year, you want to see a good

battle between bat and ball and that is what is happening... very pleased with the pitch," Kohli had said after an earlier game. However, Eden's pitch curator Prabir Mukherjee refrained from commenting on the fresh strip that will host the two teams, saying, "You will have to decide for yourself whether it is a sporting wicket when the final starts on Sunday." The strip may, however, be witness to a Caribbean calypso as both sides boast of a top order having swashbuckling willowers from the West Indies. While it will be Lendl Simmons -- who carved a brilliant 51-ball 65 in Qualifier 1 for Mumbai -- for CSK, Dwayne Smith will open the batting. The Caribbean flavours continue as all-rounders Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard don the yellow and blue jerseys respectively. Bravo is also the leading wicket-taker this sea-

son with 24 victims from 15 innings. The other big guns who can step up to make a difference in the big game can be the two skippers, namely Rohit Sharma for MI, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni for the Super Kings. One also needs to note that for the former, it has been personally one of the most happy hunting grounds as in the opening game this season he had scored a blistering 98 not out against KKR. With the leather, both side possess an formidable weaponry, with the likes of Lasith Malinga (MI) and Ashish Nehra (CSK) marshalling the respective departments. And they sure know how to turn things around in a pressure situation. Will it be the big guns who will make a difference or will the likes of Pawan Negi and Hardik Pandya deliver the goods and become an unlikely hero, one has to wait and watch.

Beckham & University of Miami discuss stadium partnership

Since retiring, England’s former captain continues to prosper off the field, where his multi-faceted life centers on celebrity and fashion, but also ambassadorial roles and an ambitious project to create a Miami team in the increasingly popular Major League Soccer. (AP Photo)

MIaMI, May 23 (aP): David Beckham and the University of Miami are discussing a possible partnership for a new stadium for both Major League Soccer and college football. Beckham was in town for a

meeting Friday, and outgoing University of Miami President Donna Shalala has been involved in discussions this week. Among the locations being considering is a site near the old Orange Bowl, which has been torn down, next to Mar-

lins Park. Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez said he likes the idea of a partnership. "It's a good idea, and it's something I brought up to the Beckham group a long time ago," Gimenez

said. The university declined to comment. Beckham's group plans to choose a site in the next few weeks and wants to move quickly after that, an aide to the mayor said. One hurdle to the partnership is the Hurricanes' long-term contract for their current home, which is the Miami Dolphins' stadium. Another is the transition of the university presidency from Shalala to Julio Frenk, who takes over June 1. Shalala has said the Hurricanes' current stadium is too large. It is being remodeled by the Dolphins and will seat 65,000 in 2015. A stadium for an MLS team would seat at least 20,000, and perhaps up to 40,000 if the Hurricanes also played there. The site near Marlins Park would be much closer to the university campus and more convenient for students. MLS Commissioner Don Garber also attended Friday's meeting. The league announced a deal with Beckham for a Miami team in January 2014, but finding a home has proved difficult, and there's no timetable for the franchise to join MLS. Miami-Dade County commissioners offered Beckham a county-owned parcel near Marlins Park, but his group has had a strong preference for a downtown location.

he clock struck midnight on the 22nd of May with the only light permeating through the night sky being the neon emissions from the top of Jam Studio 11 in the outskirts of Dimapur. Further penetrating the silence of the night were the occasional thuds of a powerful kick drum, the rumble of a distorted bass and the smooth licks of a guitar high on wah. This was a scene where anxious people waited for a file to complete rendering. After fifteen minutes of waiting for the progress bar on to reach 100%, Polar Lights were ready to take on the music scene with a brand new song. The Morung Express gained exclusive access to their new single, which is set to be released on Sunday, May 24 at 5:00pm. Following the successes of their previous singles like Bleed Out Loud and Parade , the new track titled 'A Beautiful Escape' continues the band's anthemic sound. It remains true to the band's roots deeply entrenched in old school hard rock and blues; but also manages to sound fresh and 'independent' as they put it. The track is produced with great finesse, boasting a loud and powerful sound, accompanied by weaves of excellent guitar playing. Vocalist, Mar Jamir carries on impressing with that rare quality to weave together intricate lyrics and come up with a message, through song, which is both ambiguous yet relativistic. He manages

to lay down a platform for the listener to come up with his own interpretation of the song, making the listener actually think - a lost art considering the present scene of popular music. Meanwhile, Temjen Jamir, guitarist for Polar Lights and producer of all their music, never changes, in a good way. He manages to rein in those solo happy fingers, but continues to provide serpentine webs on the guitar. His playing acts as the glue that holds the song together. A special moment in the song for this reviewer occurs during breaks right after each chorus, where the wah flows out of the guitar in the form of a spectral glide. The drums, recorded on Jam Studio 11's acoustic kit by Kilen Aier, provide a thumping foundation for the whole song. The kicks sound fantastic, and the drum play is brilliant. Accompanying this are distorted rumbles from the bass, that suspiciously sound like being played by an artificial intelligence. 'A Beautiful Escape' has lived up to the expectations that Polar Lights have generated over its relatively short time on the music scene. They were missing from several months but are now back with an arsenal of hard hitting songs, of which this latest track is just a taste. BERLIN, MAy 23 (AGENCIES): Borussia Dortmund fans paid tribute to departing manager Jurgen Klopp with a spectacular display ahead of his final home match against Werder Bremen. Dortmund went on to win the match 3-2. The win also helped Dortmund qualify for the Europa League. In other matches on Saturday, Paderborn and Freiburg were relegated from the Bundesliga in the final match of the season, while Hamburg clinched the relegation playoff spot and Stuttgart survived outright. Daniel Ginczek was the hero for Stuttgart, scoring in the 72nd minute for a 2-1 win over Paderborn that

left the home side bottom and saved his own. Freiburg lost 2-1 at Hannover, which ensured survival through Japan midfielder Hiroshi Kiyotake's third-minute header and an 84th-minute own goal from Pavel Krmas. Nils Petersen's injury time strike was too late for Freiburg. Second half goals from Ivica Olic and Slobodan Rajkovic gave Hamburg the chance to fight another day by beating Schalke 2-0 at home. Bayern signed off with a win at Mainz courtesy a goal each from Robert Lewandowski via a penalty and Bastian Schweinsteiger. At the Westfalenstadion, the 'Yellow Wall' unfurled an enormous tifo

with an image of Klopp and the words 'Danke Jurgen' ('Thank you, Jurgen'). Klopp, who has been at the club since 2008, oversaw his final Bundesliga match and will leave the club next month. He still has an opportunity to leave Dortmund with a piece of silverware when they play Wolfsburg in the German Cup final in Berlin next Saturday. Many supporters in the 80,000-strong crowd created their own banners and placards thanking 'Kloppo' for his efforts during an eventful seven years. Klopp was soon celebrating on the sidelines as Shinji Kagawa and PierreEmerick Aubameyang fired them into a two-goal lead in a storming start.

Werder pulled one back through Levin Oztunali soon afterwards. Henrikh Mkhitaryan restored the two-goal advantage with a neat finish after a Kagawa played him in. Bremen's Theodor Gebre Selassie pulled a goal back with five minutes remaining but Klopp’s men held on to ensure that they go into next weekend's DFB-Pokal final in winning form. In this time, the popular manager has led Dortmund to two Bundesliga titles, a German Cup win and the final of the Champions League in 2013. The 47-year old has been linked with managerial position at Real Madrid, Liverpool and Fenerbahce among others.

India bag five medals in Women's Junior Boxing

TAIPEI, MAy 23 (IANS): Three Indian boxers, Savita, Mandeep Sandhu and Sakshi clinched gold medals, while Soniya and Gonella Niharika won silver medals in the AIBA Women's Junior World Boxing Championships here on Saturday.

In the 50 kg category, Savita defeated Ukranian Rohova Kateryna 3-0 in the final, while in the 52 kg event, Mandeep defeated Irish Earley Niamh 3-0 in the title round. In the 54 kg competition, Sakshi moved past American Ramirez Yan-

sel 3-0 to give India its third yellow metal. However, Soniya lost 1-2 against American Garcia Heaven in the 48 kg category. Gonelia came a cropper against Russia's Sigaeva Anastaciia, who won 3-0 in the title clash of the 70 kg competition.

ATLANTA, MAy 23 (AP): Cleveland's LeBron James scored 30 points as the Cavaliers won 94-82 at Atlanta on Friday even without injured star Kyrie Irving, taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals. The Cavaliers pulled away with a dominant third quarter. James scored 11 points, the Hawks shot just 32 percent (7 of 22), and Cleveland led by as many as 20. This was a blowout in every sense. The final margin, with backup players on the court, was as close as Hawks had been since midway through the third. "You really can't make me do what I don't want to do," James said. "I play the right way." Irving was scratched before the game because of an ailing left knee. Even so, the Cavaliers cruised to their second straight win in Atlanta, and take the 2-0 advantage back with them to Cleveland, where they host the next two games starting Sunday. James assumed many of the ball-handling duties, taking advantage of Atlanta's DeMarre Carroll being at less than 100 percent. Carroll started after being carried off the court just two nights earlier, but he hardly looked like the "Junkyard Dog." He wasn't the only one struggling. The Hawks were totally outclassed for one of the few times all season. "In the playoffs, it takes more," Atlanta coach Mike Budenholzer said. "It takes better execution, better screening. You've got to do things harder." The Cavaliers, who have never won a championship, made a big investment in the offseason to lure back James after a spell in Miami to play alongside Irving and Kevin Love. But James is carrying the load with Irving sidelined and Love out with a season-ending injury. To be fair, James had a bit of help in Game 2. Tristan Thompson was a beast on the inside, grabbing 16 rebounds to spark Cleveland to a 47-39 advantage. When Thompson dunked off a pass from

James with just under 5 minutes remaining, the Cavaliers led 93-74 and many Atlanta fans began heading for the exits, surely sensing they had seen their team for the last time in this most unexpected season. Atlanta won a franchise-record 60 games to claim the top seed in the East, but the Hawks have been picked apart by the best player in the world. James had 31 points in Game 1. The Hawks had hoped that Carroll's appearance

would provide an emotional boost. An injury that looked much more serious turned out to be only a sprain, and he drew a big cheer from the crowd when he did his customary sprint across the court during the opening introductions. But at less than full speed, Carroll had no chance trying to guard James, who made 10 of 22 shots including a pair of 3-pointers. When the Hawks began collapsing toward the lane, trying to give Carroll help, James

always seemed to find the open man — often lurking behind the 3-point stripe. James had 11 assists and just missed a tripledouble, also grabbing nine rebounds. The Cavaliers finished 12 of 30 beyond the arc. Iman Shumpert knocked down four from long range and finished with 16 points. Dennis Schroder led the Hawks with just 13 points. Carroll played a team-high 33:47 but managed only six points — 10 below his playoff average.

Hamilton takes pole at Monaco GP

C M Y K

C M Y K

MONACO, MAy 23 (AP): Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton clinched his first ever pole at the Monaco Grand Prix after a strong drive Saturday while his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg will start from second as he bids to win the race for the third straight year. In last year's race, Rosberg took pole but angered Hamilton when he crashed under no apparent pressure right at the end of the session, bringing it to a halt just as the British driver was poised to beat his time. There was no repeat of that incident on Saturday but Rosberg had to pit right at the end of qualifying after locking his right tire. Hamilton, who has taken pole in five of six races, clocked 1 minute, 15.098 seconds, with Rosberg .342 behind and Sebastian Vettel .751 back after being fastest in third and final qualifying. "Did I get it?" asked Hamilton as he finished his run, but there was no doubt he'd taken his 43rd career pole position. "I can't express how happy I am, it wasn't the easiest session. I didn't have the rhythm until the last two laps," Hamilton said. "This track is so hard, it's like climbing a ladder: sometimes you slide back

down, sometimes you go back up. This is not even half the job. There's so much to do tomorrow, it's going to be mentally and physically challenging." The 30-year-old Hamilton has been on pole here before, however, just not in F1. "GP2 in 2006 was the last time I was on pole here, so a big 'Thank you' to the team, their performance was incredible," said Hamilton, who had been worried about his tires midway through qualifying. Red Bull drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat were fourth and fifth, respectively, ahead of Ferra-

ri's Kimi Raikkonen as drivers switched to the new and faster Pirelli supersoft tires. Rosberg, who won the Spanish GP from pole position two weeks ago, pushed too hard as he tried to beat Hamilton's time and locked his tire — just as he had done right at the end of the Q2 session. "I had a good rhythm starting off and then I lost touch at the end," said Rosberg, who is looking to become the first driver since Ayrton Senna to win the Monaco GP three times in a row. "I had to go for it and it didn't work out." Vettel, meanwhile, is

still looking to close the gap on Mercedes in terms of speed. "I think everyone was struggling a little bit with the tires. It was a shame that the sun was hiding behind the crowds," Vettel said. "We know it's Monaco and it's difficult to pass, so if you start from pole you have a great chance." Nine of the past 10 winners at the Monaco GP have been from pole, with the only exception being Hamilton when he won from third place in 2008 — the year he won his first title. Meanwhile, the problems continue for McLaren as

Fernando Alonso's session was ended by what looked like a mechanical failure, and teammate Jenson Button just missed out on joining the top 10 in Q3 for the first time this season. It was an even worse day for Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas, fifth in the championship standings, as he was caught in heavy traffic during the first part of qualifying and qualified in 17th. He will move up one place because French driver Romain Grosjean was earlier hit with a five-place grid penalty for changing his gearbox. The 3.34-kilometer (2.07-mile) Monaco track is the shortest in F1 and also the slowest, with a succession of tight, sinewy turns and claustrophobic barriers making the street circuit the toughest to overtake on, along with the Spanish GP near Barcelona. After a rain-hit practice on Thursday, the sun came back out to warm fans crowded around the picturesque principality's glittering harbor. More privileged spectators had a free view while drinking champagne on their luxury yachts as they took in the atmosphere at F1's unique race, which sees drivers go past the famous Monte Carlo casino and some of the most expensive real estate in the world.
