full of talent: Nargis FakHri

argis Fakhri has embarked on a journey to the larger than life terrain of Hollywood with film "Spy". The New York-born Bollywood actress says among the dissimilarities that widen the gap between Hindi silver screen and West, there is one similarity that weaves them together -- the pool of talent. Nargis, who ventured into Bollywood opposite Ranbir Kapoor in film "Rockstar" in 2011, added that Hindi filmdom and Hollywood -- two of the most prominent film industries of the world -can scale more success by learning from each other. "At the end of the day, the one commonality that both

Hindi cinema and Hollywood share is that they are full of talented and inspirational people. Outside of this, there are many differences from the scheduling and rehearsal to promotion and directing techniques," Nargis told IANS in an email interaction from New York. The 30-plus actress added that she fell in love with the industries "because of these differences" and believes that Hollywood and Bollywood "can really learn from each other". Most often, words like 'bigger, grander, louder' are used to define Bollywood films, which are painted on a big screen canvas filled with myriad hues of feelings along with music and dance, whereas Hollywood

films are devoid of the music hoopla and considered more subtle in their live action dramas. Nargis has crossed borders with a mission on mind -- not to fade away, but leave a lasting impression. "I'm hopeful to be another person to be able to reinforce that we (Indian actors) are not just there to make up numbers, but to influence, add and inspire in Hollywood," she said in support of the several Indian actors like Irrfan Khan and Priyanka Chopra, who are making their mark in the west. For her first Hollywood outing, Nargis has picked "Spy", an action-comedy film, which is directed by Paul Feig and has a star-

rimrose Hill is an area known for its high density of yoga-honed yummy mummies but they’re not above getting in line to snap up a bargain or two for their offspring – especially when it involves 25 outfits belonging to pint-size fashionista, Harper Beckham. Well dressed mummies (plus the odd dad) clutching lattes, small children or both began queuing outside the local Mary's Living & Giving Shop (Mary Portas’ fundraising boutique on leafy Regent’s Park Road) from six o’clock this morning. When the doors opened, at 10am, two outfits were purchased in the first five minutes – both by Chloé – a peach dress for £150 and a little quilted grey number (not dissimilar to a pale blue ‘cake dress’ from Victoria’s own Victoria Victoria Beckham collection SS14) rung up a cool £350. Three year olds everywhere will be knashing their milk teeth in envy.

studded cast including Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne, Jason Statham, Jude Law and Miranda Hart. She mentions that the Hollywood film steers away from the "outdated stereotyping of female" in spy films, which shows woman as a distraction prop. "The old school, misrepresentation and outdated stereotyping has been flipped wonderfully by the mind of Paul Feig, who in my opinion is a maverick in modern cinema. His vision created a female spy which Melissa plays amazingly and by the end of the movie you'll wonder why it took so long for there to be an awesome female spy who saves the world," she said. ingers Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez reportedly "always" talk about collaborating together on a track. "Selena and Taylor talk about music all the time. It wouldn't surprise me if they collaborate on something soon. The duo are said to have even sat down together to discuss songwriting, with Gomez taking musical inspiration from the 25-year-old star. "Taylor has sat down with Selena a few times to talk about the writing process. Despite all her success, she never comes off as arrogant or like a know-it-all. She just suggested a few things that helped her along the way, and now Selena has incorporated them into her music. "Selena's written a lot more songs based on her personal experience and heartbreaks. It was Taylor that she drew inspiration from in that sense, who told her that's something she should really focus on, because it's what young people, especially young female fans, can relate to," the insider added.

journey in the showbiz was "unplanned and organic", adding that she "has always been a go with the flow type of person". Meanwhile, a lot of things are going on on the professional front other than "Spy" for Nargis. "I'm really excited about furthering my film career in Bollywood and Hollywood. In Bollywood, I have three upcoming films. I'm also looking to becoming more vocal on many issues outside of the studio. "Health and well-being as well as how we can live in harmony with our planet is something I'm passionate about. Fair treatment of human beings and animals in many different realms strikes a chord with me," she said.

‘My book is autobiographical’ merican supermodel Cindy Crawford, who is in India for a professional commitment, says her forthcoming book titled “Becoming” is “not really an autobiography, but an autobiographical". "It's not really an autobiography, but an autobiographical. The original idea of the book was 50 iconic photos married to 50 aesthetics, talking about the journeys and lessons that I learnt along the way (sic),” Crawford, 49, said here. The world renowned supermodel said that the book features images which have "never been published before" and shares insights into her experiences of motherhood and the fashion world. "The book will talk about different lessons I learnt in life. Taking chances, learning to say no, how do I feel about ageing, becoming mother and the lessons that I learnt in fashion world,” added the mother of two, who launched the new Constel-

ennett, Colbert, Lady Gaga and Van Morrison were among the featured singers and speakers Thursday night at the 46th annual Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony, a 3-hour journey through the vast and unpredictable range of American music. New inductees included country stars Toby Keith and Bobby Braddock, the late Chicago bluesman Willie Dixon, the Grateful Dead songwriting team of Robert Hunter and the late Jerry Garcia, pop and stage star Cyndi Lauper and rock composer and performer Linda Perry. Morrison and Lady Gaga picked up honorary prizes, while awards also were presented to Nate Ruess and the former CEO of the American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), John LoFrumento. At the Marriott Marquis

in Times Square, admirers from across genres and generations exchanged tributes. The 88-year-old Bennett presented Lady Gaga, his duet partner, with a "Contemporary Icon Award" after Lady Gaga and Perry honored each other. Gaga stormed through Perry's "What's Up?" and Perry said it was "crazy" that a song she dashed off in her bedroom, fighting off fleas from her dog, would be embraced by a world famous performer. Carly Rae Jepsen faithfully sang Lauper's moody ballad "Time After Time" and Michael Buble crooned a finger-snapping version of Morrison's "Moondance." A segment on Dixon featured a speech by Elton John's songwriting partner, Bernie Taupin, who called him the Shakespeare of the blues and noted that many bands in England in the '60s started out by playing

"Little Red Rooster," ''Back Door Man" and other Dixon standards. Taupin credited Dixon with loading up British artists such as the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton with great material and giving them "the wings to fly." Colbert seemed an unexpected choice to introduce Keith, but the future "Late Night" host kicked right into "As Good As I Once Was," the stage musicians laughing and grinning behind him. Colbert later explained to the audience that Keith had been an early and appreciated guest on his Comedy Central program, so well remembered that Colbert on Thursday held up a pillow stitched with a profane compliment Keith once paid him. Hunter, who wrote lyrics for "Truckin,'" "Friend of the Devil" and other Dead favorites, had the crowd clapping as he strummed a guitar and sang "Ripple," with its plaintive question, "Would you hear my voice come through the music?" Morrison, the night's final act, had a more practical take. Looking like a Blues Brother in his familiar black, with dark shades to match, he noted how songwriting royalties keep the money coming in during dry spells in his career and talked of convincing Buble to record a duet with him of Morrison's hit "Real Real Gone." "So the name of the game is hustle," he said.

Michael Douglas receives $1m "Jewish Nobel Prize"

H

ollywood actor Michael Douglas was in Israel Thursday to receive the Genesis Prize, which honours individuals who excel in their professional fields and have shown "engagement and dedication to the Jewish community or the State of Israel." Michael's father, Kirk Douglas, born Issur Danielovitch, is Jewish, while his mother is not, which would not make him Jewish under traditional religious law. In a March opinion piece in the Los Angeles Times denouncing anti-Semitism, he described how his son encountered his first anti-Semitic incident. "While some Jews believe that not having a Jewish mother makes me not Jewish, I have learned the hard way that those who hate do not make such fine distinctions," wrote Douglas. The 70-year-old actor

was to receive the 1-million-dollar prize from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at a Thursday night ceremony in Jerusalem, presided over by comedian and former NBC The Tonight Show host Jay Leno. "Mr Douglas plans to direct his prize money toward promoting activities designed to raise awareness of inclusiveness and diversity in Judaism," the Genesis Prize Foundation announced on its website ahead of the presentation. Accompanied by wife Catherine Zeta-Jones, 45, and their children, he met Netanyahu at the prime minister's office, as well as former Israeli president Shimon Peres at the Peres Centre for Peace. Douglas also visited an attack tunnel dug by Palestinian militants from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory.
