Paris Saint-G ermain claimed the International Champions Cup with a 2-0 victory over Manchester United on Wednesday night at Soldier Field. Off the field, PSG might be on the verge of scoring another victory over the Red Devils. Following the game, PSG manager Laurent Blanc said his squad is close to finishing a deal with Manchester United for talented midfielder Angel di Maria, who didn't make the trip to the U.S. for the four-match series.

"As Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain are very big clubs, negotiations can be difficult," Blanc said through a translator. "But I feel negotiations are close to the end." The transfer fee could be as high as $71.7 million for di Maria, who spent last season with Manchester United after the Red Devils picked him up from Real Madrid for an even larger fee. Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal wouldn't confirm that a deal is imminent. "I don't answer that question," van Gaal said. "I don't know. We'll an-

nounce something when it's done. It is not done. It's a process. I want to interfere with nothing." Without di Maria, Manchester United's attack sometimes sputtered, while Paris Saint-Germain was able to hold on after goals from midfielder Blaise Matuidi and forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the first 34 minutes. The victory, before 61,351 spectators, brought PSG the trophy for the series of summer exhibitions. They tied the New York Red Bulls with 10 points on 3-01 records, but took the tiebreaker on goal differential.

"There's a huge quality to this tournament, but we can't forget there's an official match (against Olympique Lyonnais in the French League) to win in a few days in Montreal." That match is Saturday. Matuidi opened the scoring in the 25th minute. Matuidi ran into the penalty area, fended off defender Phil Jones and sent a slow roller past charging goalkeeper David De Gea. Van Gaal found fault with De Gea on that play. "They created chances only on personal errors," Van Gaal said. "They can score out of these kind of

errors, and they can finish the game." Ibrahimovic and Maxwell, the Brazilian defender, played a brilliant give-and-go for PSG's second goal in the 34th minute. Ibrahimovic came down the center, fed Maxwell on the left 25 yards out and took a return feed on the 6-yard line for an easy score. PSG goalkeeper Kevin Trapp was forced to make only three saves, the best of which came from midfielder Andreas Periera in the 76th minute. Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata had a goal wiped out by an offside call and misfired on another sure change. His 17-yard shot in the 22nd minute was negated after he was ruled offside. In the 55th minute, Mata failed to connect on a shot from the right doorstep that would have cut the Red Devils' deficit in half. In the 35th minute, Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney sent a rebound wide after Memphis Depay was saved from 10 yards out. Periera's chance in the 76th minute came as Manchester United was pressing the attack. His pointblank one-hop header was stopped by Trapp on the left side of the goal box. Manchester United beat Club America 1-0 in its opener, then rolled to 3-1 victories over San Jose and FC Barcelona. PSG beat SL Benfica and Fiorentina before losing to Chelsea on penalties. De Gea was replaced by Sam Johnstone in the Manchester United goal for the second half.

faced with a battle

BiRmiNGham, July 30 (REuTERS): England removed Chris Rogers and Steve Smith to leave Australia in trouble on the second day of the third test on Thursday as a compelling Ashes series ebbed and flowed again. Australia were 73 for two at tea in their second innings, 72 runs behind England who were bowled out for 281 in the afternoon session at Edgbaston. David Warner's belligerent 56 not out, made off 37 deliveries, gave the touring side hope while captain Michael Clarke, desperately searching for form, was unbeaten on two at the interval. Stuart Broad, bowling round the wicket, rapped Rogers on his back leg to trap the opener lbw for six. Smith then perished for eight when he top-edged Steven Finn to wicketkeeper Jos Buttler. England established a decent lead, despite losing their last three wickets for four runs, after an entertaining eighth-wicket stand of 87 between Moeen Ali and Broad. The pair added quick runs after lunch, Moeen again showing how valuable he is coming in at number eight. All at sea against his spinning counterpart Nathan Lyon before the interval, he smashed Mitchell Johnson for six boundaries including three in one over. But after Broad (31) skied Josh Hazlewood to mid-on, Moeen quickly followed and the innings ended tamely. A hostile Johnson had begun the second morning on fire, removing Jonny Bairstow and Ben

Stokes in his first over to pass 300 test wickets. Johnson steamed in and directed a bouncer that was homing in on Bairstow's throat, the startled batsman fending it off with his glove to be caught behind. Two balls later Stokes also got a taste of 'chin-music', unable to get out of the way of an-

other thunderbolt and falling in the same fashion. Joe Root kept his cool to compile 63 while Hazlewood and Lyon took three wickets apiece for Australia. The five-test series is level at 1-1 after England won in Cardiff and Australia hit back in the second test at Lord's.

The news kids in the league can play a little bit. Kaka and David Villa, a pair of 33-year-old international icons in their first season in Major League Soccer, showed they still have some panache to their games. Kaka scored on a penalty kick and set up Villa's goal minutes later in the first half to help the best players in MLS beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 on a blustery Wednesday night. The MLS improved to 9-3-1 against international competition in its All-Star Game. Kaka, who served as the team's captain, was selected the game MVP. "Not bad for my first All Star," said Kaka, a midfielder for Orlando City. "I didn't expect that for tonight. "Everybody is happy, because tomorrow in the soccer world everybody will talk about the MLS All-Star team beating a very good European team." Although the MLS players had just one real workout together, coach Pablo Mastroeni said everything flowed together because of Kaka. "His desire to be here was tremendous," said Mastroeni, who coaches the Colorado Rapids. "For a guy who's done everything you can pretty much do in a football career and still have this desire to come and participate in Colorado, in altitude, mid-week, and be excited and hungry about it? That speaks more about the human than the player. ... He rubbed off, even for a moment, on a lot of us." Harry Kane scored for the Spurs, who open the English Premier League season against Manchester United on Aug. 8. "As a team we could have done better," Kane said. "Our first tough game of the pre-

season, but we created some good chances in the first half." Especially Kane, who was stopped three times early in the game by keeper Nick Rimando of Real Salt Lake. "Have to say thank you to (Rimando)," Kaka said. "He saved the team." David Ousted, who plays for Vancouver, took over in goal for the second half. He preserved the lead in the 73rd minute when he made a sprawling save on a pointblank attempt by Josh Onomah. Kaka converted a penalty kick in the 20th minute after a hand ball in the box. Although Spurs keeper Michel Vorm guessed right on Kaka's kick, he couldn't stop the shot from the Brazilian midfielder. Three minutes later, Kaka set up another goal when he delivered a pass that Villa tapped in with his left foot. Villa, who plays for New York City FC, is Spain's ca-

reer scoring leader. U.S. national standout Clint Dempsey, a former player at Tottenham before going to Seattle, also was given an assist. Early on, it was a frustrating first half for Kane as he was stopped time and again by Rimando. But Kane wouldn't be denied in the 37th minute, when he juked defender Omar Gonzalez to create just enough space to unleash a line shot into the corner of the net. "The keeper was in top form," Kane said. "Delighted to see the goal go in and delighted to be out there." The MLS All Stars were without quite a few big names as Steven Gerrard (LA Galaxy), Robbie Keane (LA Galaxy), and Frank Lampard (New York City FC) all sat out due to injuries. Landon Donovan attended the game as a spectator. The U.S. soccer great retired last season after winning the MLS title.
