Superman Chinese director Zhang Yimou Rare comic book sold for defends casting of Matt Damon nearly $1 million A

rare copy of a Superman comic book sold for nearly $1 million this week. The 1938 comic book marks the first appearance of Superman, and is considered a gem among comic book fans, according to Heritage Auctions. It was expected to sell for $750,000 but fetched $956,000. About 100 copies of the comic book are believed to exist decades after production. "Few copies of this comic survive, let alone come to auction with such a bright cover," said Lon Allen, managing director of comics and comic art at Heritage Auctions The comic book sold Thursday was part of a collection owned by a fan who bought it in the 1990s for $26,000, Dallas-based Heritage Auctions said. elebrated Chinese director Zhang Yimou has defended his choice of casting Hollywood actor Matt Damon as his film’s lead saying the role was never conceived for a Chinese actor. He was responding to a criticism by an Asian-American actress, Constance Wu. Damon of the Bourne franchise will star later this year in the $150 million Chinese-Hollywood fantasy movie The Great Wall, an English-language movie set in China involving menacing supernatural monsters. Constance, who stars in a US comedy series centered on immigrants called Fresh Off the Boat, posted on Twitter last

week: “We have to stop perpetuating the racist myth that a only (sic) white man can save the world.” “Our heroes don’t look like Matt Damon,” her post read, listing alternatives such as Pakistani schoolgirl turned Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai, Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi and South African president and anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela. The Great Wall is the first English-language movie by Zhang Yimou, the director of the romantic Kung Fu drama House of Flying Daggers, and the opulent opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

“For the first time, a film deeply rooted in Chinese culture, with one of the largest Chinese casts ever assembled, is being made at tent pole scale for a world audience. I believe that is a trend that should be embraced by our industry,” Zhang said in a statement posted on Entertainment Weekly’s website on Thursday. “Our film is not about the construction of the Great Wall. Matt Damon is not playing a role that was originally conceived for a Chinese actor. The arrival of his character in our story is an important plot point,” he was quoted as saying. Zhang said actors portraying the movie’s other four “major heroes” are

Chinese. The casting of Damon hasn’t sparked any controversy in China, where producers are increasingly entering into coproductions with American and other movie makers to improve their filmmaking techniques, and where the government is pushing for Chinese films to be global hits. Hollywood has been drawn to China by the country’s deeppocketed financiers and its box office that is now the world’s second biggest. The Great Wall is due to be released in December in China and in early 2017 in other countries, including the United States.

he sixth season of HBO’s popular fantasy show, Game of Thrones, ended in June and fans seem to be anxious for the next season already. For anyone who can’t wait for the next season, a live concert of the

show’s music in Los Angeles next week might make the loss a little less bitter. A full orchestra will perform the music at the Hollywood Palladium on Monday, and composer Ramin Djawadi will take questions alongside cast member

Isaac Hempstead Wright, who plays Bran Stark. The event will also feature an interactive exhibit. Attendees will be able to walk through the Hall of Faces, see the Iron Throne, view costumes from the latest season, and examine

inger Sheryl Crow, who is celebrating 10 years since she won a battle with cancer, says her diagnosis was a "game changer". Crow, who has sons Wyatt, 9, and Levi, 6, said the diagnosis helped her to see what was really important, reports femalefirst.co.uk. She said: "My diagnosis was a real game changer. At that point, I was 44, and I was the picture of great health. "I've had a lot of people say, 'Yeah, these things help you redefine your life', but for me, I really refined my life. I began to really hack away at the things that were not important anymore and the things that were energy sucking. I learned how to say no." Speaking at the Blog Her conference here, she further said: "I think that (talking about cancer) takes the fear out of it. I mean, it is a scary thing, but one of the problems we have with breast cancer in general is getting women to go and get a mammography. "A lot of us who are moms are too busy, or we don't really want to know. I think a lot of women really kind of don't want to know. In some instances, we're poorly insured or uninsured. And until we find a cure, early detection is our cure. The statistic of the cure rate at five years is 100 per cent if it's detected early." She said that she loves women who are coming out and saying that "This is what I've done. I've been proactive and I'm celebrating my life. It's just really hard to imagine that 30 years ago, no one had spoken about having breast cancer until Betty Ford". "When she came out and announced (she had it), it was very taboo and shocking. And now we can talk about it and it's a part of our everyday life. Knowledge is power." Source: IANS

riyanka Chopra who is filming the second season of her American TV show can only do one Hollywood and one Bollywood film next year. It's been six months since Priyanka Chopra's last Bollywood release, Jai Gangaajal, hit the marquee. While initial reports indicated that she was tapped to play the late astronaut Kalpana Chawla in a biopic, PeeCee herself admits that she has not signed the film. Don 3 is not in the pipeline at the moment, either. "My schedule is watertight till March, 2017 as I am contractually bound to wrap up the second season of Quantico. It would be great if season three comes along as it's a progressive show, which airs in 200 territories worldwide. I get to interact with an audience that may have never known me through my feature films," the 34-year-old actress-producer reasons. Even weekends are dedicated to the American TV show as she gears up for visits to South Africa, Germany, Berlin and China to promote the dubbed versions of the series soon. From four-six films a year to one show, how is she handling the change in pace? "I am not just an actress or a producer, I am an artiste

and I love the variety -a little drama, a little humour, a little action -of several projects, at once. But now, I am reduced to acting in one film at a time and I'm creatively frustrated," she confides. Her first Hollywood film, the Seth Gordon-directed Baywatch, has her sharing screen space with Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario and Pamela Anderson. It hits screens globally next summer. But PeeCee hasn't signed any new films in the

West either. I am not only saying no to Bollywood films. I have also turned down more than six Hollywood films. I am rejecting films across industries. I'm going to pick the best and do only one film from each side next year. Even that would mean pushing myself against time. But I'm a 70mm girl who can never give up Hindi films. Main toh apni TV series bhi 70mm pe dekthi hoon," she signs off with a chuckle.
