I am so pumped up; I can hardly wait to sweep the upcoming LS polls.

NCSU demands cancellation of four project work orders KOHIMA, APRIL 4 (MExN): The Nagaland Contractors’ and Suppliers’ Union (NCSU) has written to the Chief Engineer, PWD (R&B),demanding cancellation of all four project work orders against the tender tables allotted to M/S Singh Construction, M/S Panesar & Sons, M/S Frontier Construction and M/S National Construction, within seven days. It cautioned that failure to do so would compel the NCSU to take its own course of action, and that the department would be held responsible for any untoward incident.

NPF asks ECI to ban SUMA

C M Y K

DIMAPUR, APRIL 4 (MExN): The Naga Peoples’ Front has written to the Chief Election Commissioner, India expressing concerns at actions taken by the Students Union Movement of Arunachal (SUMA) and called upon the ECI to “ban” the said association, till the conclusion of the ensuing Lok Sabha polls. A press note from the NPF alleged that SUMA “has attacked NPF party workers and also burnt down a Nagaland registered vehicle in Donyi-Polo Ashok Hotel, Itanagar on April 2.” The party said that SUMA had “earlier displayed deep antipathy towards NPF,” and had asked the NPF “not to enter Arunachal Pradesh at the behest of its political masters.” It lamented that the student body has become an “extra constitutional entity against evolution of a free polity based upon democratic institutions like the NPF.” “Political parties are the source and sustenance of our representative democracy and any intercession with this fundamental is tantamount to subversion of democracy,” the NPF stated. The party called for “immediate intervention” from the ECI in “banning the organization” till the conduct of elections. “SUMA has demonstrably evidenced its nefarious interference in the conduct of elections in Arunachal Pradesh to the detriment of the NPF,” it stated. It further asked the ECI to instruct the CEO of Arunachal Pradesh to “freeze all capabilities of SUMA in order to enable NPF to freely and fairly campaign in the state, towards an objective and even handed poll in the state.” The NPF has fielded candidates in 12 Assembly Constituencies of Arunachal Pradesh for the upcoming LS polls and has rendered support to the BJP in East Arunachal Parliamentary constituency and to the PPA in West Arunachal seat.

nagaland Governor proposes Youth power can set new path ‘Morung system’ in education

BANGALORE, APRIL 4 (AP): What do India’s youth want from their politicians? Clean water, universal health care, women’s safety, food for all, better education, less corruption, better roads, more investment and above all, more jobs. As India begins its election process Monday, the enormous population of ambitious, techsavvy and politically engaged youths has great potential to sway the outcome. More than 378 million of India’s 814 million eligible voters between 18 and 35, according to census records. India’s young voters have a world view that in many ways is strikingly different than their parents’ and grandparents’. They have grown up in a time of enormous international opportunity, technological innovation and high-speed economic growth. “Our parents believed you can be happy only with financial security,” said Sushant Bangru, a 21-year-old biology major at the Indian Institute of Sciences in Bangalore. “But we know that passion and knowledge is above money. It’s about doing what you love to do.” Anxious to pursue their dreams, young people are particularly concerned with India’s ability to add jobs. India added fewer than 3 million jobs between 2005 and 2010, far below the 1 million needed each month to keep up with student matriculation and Indians’ growing ambitions. India’s first-time voters came of age in an era of economic reforms that eased socialist-leaning policies and allowed more imports and foreign investment. Annual percapita income nearly tripled between 2002 and 2010, while

Students and first time voters participate in a street play to create awareness on voting rights in Gauhati, India, Friday, April 4 2014. India will hold national elections from April 7 to May 12, kicking off a vote that many observers see as the most important election in more than 30 years in the world’s largest democracy. India moved from a country mostly concerned with securing food and shelter to one in which priorities are jobs, electricity and infrastructure. But the riches have rolled out unevenly, creating a conspicuous wealth gap that has fueled frustrations by putting lavish lifestyles in close proximity with the 400 million Indians — a quarter of the country’s population — living in poverty under $1.25 a day. Those gaps are even more visible and public with the technology explosion. Twenty years ago people had access to only a single state-run TV channel and most had no telephone. To-

day, there are more than 200 TV channels — with some 40 devoted to news alone — while three in four Indians has a cell phone. “We have no toilets in my home village, but everybody has a smartphone, and we all check every day for what’s happening in the campaign,” said 22-yearold Hanamanthray Biradar in Karnataka. “Indian democracy is at a peculiar stage of maturity or evolution. There has been a particular way democracy has been functioning for the last 30 years, and there is a backlash against it,” said Jagdeep Chhokar, who heads the Association for Democratic Reforms in New Delhi. “With all the

talk of the young electorate, the political parties are now scrambling to do whatever they can to grab young voters.” The engagement of India’s youth in politics reached a pinnacle three years ago, as they joined urban middle-class protesters in marching in protests against endemic corruption. Their demands led to anti-graft legislation and the formation of the AAP. Some voters say they’re already disillusioned by politics and unhappy with the candidates. But they plan to cast their ballots nonetheless, taking advantage of a new choice on the ballot — for “None of the Above.”

Nagaland Governor Dr. Ashwani Kumar today said that compared to other districts, Mon lags behind in development, agriculture, infrastructure, health and education. “The schools have been sanctioned in the remote areas, but there are no good school buildings. Where there are school buildings there no good teachers. Where there are teachers there are no good students,” he said while gracing the silver jubilee celebration of Konyak Union Kohima cum Aoleang festival here. As per statistics Mon district is the most backward in terms of literacy and education, he said, adding that it has the lowest literacy in Nagaland, both among rural and urban, and among the male and female population. As per the 2011 census, he said, the overall literacy rate in Mon is 56.60% (males: 60.38 % and female 52.39%). In order to achieve long term results, he said “First is adopting the concept of Morung system of living and learning in our school education structure. We find that in the villages, the parents are neither well educated nor have the resources to send their children to full time school. At home these children, especially girls are required to do household work/help in cooking. All children have to help in agriculture operations and look after the cattle. As a result their studies get neglected. How can we expect these children to devote full time and energy to studies? How can we expect them to compete with other children from the urban

areas and richer families? Asking them to do so appears unfair.” He suggested that one alternative is to put boys and girls, within the age group of 10 years, from all poor sections of society, in hostels run on the lines of Morungs. He added that the state should provide all meals, books, clothes and teaching materials free of cost. “We have the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas. We have famous public schools providing hostel education to children of rich people located in Shillong, Shimla and Darjeeling. We have Sainik Schools. We need to make Morung Schools for the children of poor parents from remote/rural areas of Nagaland,” he stated. He also stated that children below nine years need to be educated in the schools located near their villages. With the twin objectives of improving the health and education of poor children, the Governor informed that nearly Rs. 34.83 crore was released for Nagaland to run the mid day meal scheme. In the 12th five year plan, an amount of Rs. 90, 155 crore has been kept for this scheme. “It is for us and the state government to utilize our share and ensure that we provide properly cooked, Naga style, nutritious meals to our school going children. If we are unable to do so for any reason, then we will be denying our poor children the right to a good mid day meal,” he said. Further, the Governor urged the Konyak Union, Konyak youth, the NSF, ENPO and NGOs to take up implementation and monitoring of this scheme, “which is so vital for our children.” Related story on page 5

Standoff at Rilan Yan village ‘We hope for peace to continue’ Morung Express News Dimapur | April 4

The Dimapur-Karbi-Anglong border witnessed another standoff on April 4. This time, it was at Rilan Yan border village on the western periphery of Dimapur district. According to Rilan Yan villagers, Assam Police personnel tore down bamboo structures, under construction, within the village jurisdiction. The site in question overlooks an Assam Police camp and a newly formed settlement, a few hundred feet across. The villagers said that they were setting up bamboo structures when the Assam Police, along with Assam Forest and CRPF personnel turned up at the site in the late afternoon and directed the work-

ers to vacate the site. They then started dismantling the structures, which were under construction, the villagers said. It led to heated exchanges between the villagers and the Assam Police personnel. A confrontation was averted following the intervention of the border magistrate from the Assam side and the Dimapur police. The Assam Police personnel left the site after a three-hour long standoff. According to the villagers, Assam Police claimed that no construction activity can be allowed in the site as it falls within Daldali Reserve Forest. On the other hand, a settlement was allowed to come up a few hundred feet from the site, the villagers said. The villagers further maintained that the site is well within the designated village boundary.

AcAUt demands action against ‘transport cartel’ DIMAPUR, APRIL 4 (MExN): Against Corruption and Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) Nagaland has demanded police action against, what it termed as a “transport cartel,” which has allegedly “victimized” a Naga businessman from operating his transport agency. ACAUT Nagaland, in a press note, further alleged that the “syndicate” is “backed by the NSCN (IM).” It informed that the owner South India Transport Agency, the only transport agency in the state, owned and operated by a Naga, “is not being allowed to run his business by a transport cartel backed by the NSCN-IM despite possessing all legal documents issued by the DMC and Assam authorities.” It alleged that the owner was “summoned” by the NSCN (IM), when the latter filed an FIR against the “syndicate ring-

leaders” at Khatkhati police station. It identified the “syndicate ringleaders” as Shivnath, Parvesh Ali, RK Reddy, Dolia Chowdhury and Rocky Okram. ACAUT Nagaland has urged Dimapur police to arrest the “syndicate dealers,” who it informed operate in both Dimapur and Assam. Failure to act, it stated, would lead Naga people to “conclude that NPGbacked syndicate kingpins are operating hand in clove with the police.” It further cautioned that if no action is taken, ACAUT Nagaland will be compelled to “take matters into its own hands.” Stating that price rise of essential commodities is due to transport agencies “taking advantage of the prevailing unabated taxation milieu in the state,” it demanded action from the district administration on this issue. Asking transporters

to respect Naga sentiments, ACAUT Nagaland further cautioned that it would, under no circumstances, allow local businessmen to be victimized by syndicates “operating under the protection of NPGs.” “…continued anti-social activities against the Naga people cannot be tolerated…” it asserted. ACAUT Nagaland then stated “The NSCN (IM) should realize that in case of any untoward incident” towards the owner of the concerned transport agency, “it is ready to change its strategy at will.” It further urged the group not to harass the said person and to uphold its commitment towards peace and reconciliation. “He should be allowed to carry his activities in both Assam and Nagaland and such declaration should be carried in all the local papers,” the ACAUT demanded.

“Terhü Keretho! (Most difficult war),” said 92 years old Duotsolie Vihienuo, a WWII War Veteran, when asked about his experiences on the war during the commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Kohima, which was held on April 4 at the Kohima War Cemetery. Duotsolie is one among the nine Naga Veterans who were present at the commemoration. The programme started with the wreath laying ceremony at the Stone of Remembrance followed by Air Chief Marshall Sir Joe French KCB CBE (retd.), Vice Chairman Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) unveiling the Information Panel by the CWGC. “Nowhere in history has there been so much fighting, so much agony and pain in so small a place. In this small place, because there was so much fighting, so much peace has also come about,” remarked Himato Zhimomi (IFS), Commissioner for Tourism, Govt. of Nagaland. He requested the visiting dignitaries to go back and tell others of Kohima and the many souls who lost their lives in this place. Zhimomi also emphasized on the need to reach out to both the victors of the war as well as the ones who lost. “We look for peace and hope that it will continue,” said Air Chief Marshall Sir

r Tarep Ao at 85 years is the oldest member of the choir. His wife, Achila Tarep, and granddaughter, Jaremdi Wati Longchar, are also part of the choir. “Even though I am not a good singer, I’m happy to be a part of this concert and I’m thankful for the opportunity,” the octogenarian says. Music and sports are his hobbies. Music attracted me when I was about 19, he says. He had learned tonic-solfa from elders in his village, Mopungchuket. He first sang the ‘halleluyah’ song in 1950 as a member of the Mokokchung Baptist Church Choir. Dr Tarep was the first National Superintendent at Satribari Christian Hospital. He has also served as deacons in Dimapur, Kohima, and Wokha. He was also captain of the football team in Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh. At present, he is into translating English gospel songs to Ao, and also composing. Dr Tarep calls it a new experience and says joining the choir has made him feel spiritually uplifted.

He says it is probably the first time nine to ten tribes are coming together under one church. Also joining Dr Tarep in the choir is his wife, Achila. She reminisces the time when she first got attracted to music during her graduation at Calcutta Bible College in 1976. She joined as ambassador for Jesus Team in 1979 and has visited churches in different parts of India. She later joined Dimapur Ao Baptist Arogo (Old) as Associate Pastor

he is often called as the powerhouse behind Nagaland’s music fraternity. And rightfully so. Because for 40 years, Margaret Shishak has dedicated herself in the field of music, especially and particularly in Nagaland. Her decision to leave the US and settle in Nagaland has been a big boon for countless music students particularly. With her husband Dr.T.A Shishak, they had started the Patkai Christian College Nagaland in 1974. An accomplished pipe organ player and pianist, she recollects learning piano from a high school student for one dollar a lesson while growing up in the US. With an M.Mus. in organ performance from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA, Margaret has been truly influential in training and honing the musical gifts of Naga youth. From teaching fundamentals of music classes, conducting the choir, and giving piano tuition, she moulded fine western classical musicians out of Naga students. She shared her admiration for composer JS Park, and her own organ teacher Marilyn Mason. Among Nagas, she acknowledges the talents of Nise Meruno, Vivee Peseye and Ren Merry. Her favourite musical memories she said are fond memories of being in choir (Moody chorale), participating in competitions and recitals. She also remembers enjoying at-

tending very good concerts in the University where her youngest son Zingrin attended. To young aspiring musicians hoping to continue with a future in music, she advises “Practice a lot and be disciplined. She also emphasizes a lot on slow learning adding, “If you can’t play slow you won’t be able to play fast. I know many music pianists may disagree with me on this but personally I emphasize on this”. Margaret points out that in the West, the level of musical proficiency is very high and very hard to break into even for talented artistes. It’s so hard to get into the top-tier and definitely harder to make a living out of music, she said. However In Nagaland, she opines even a music teacher is able to earn a livelihood, adding “I do think that many people charge exorbitant rates. But it also seems like people are ready nowadays to pay huge sums to be taught music”. Music she said keeps her happy saying, “Even if I am feeling tired. When I start playing, I don’t feel tired anymore. Music has that effect on me. I enjoy practicing new music and old ones too”. She shyly laughs and confesses that she does not understand why everyone keeps on praising her. “I suppose I taught them well,” she admits. However she expresses pride that many of her students have gone on to do well musically. “I hear many of them are teaching outside Nagaland

or have opened music schools. I wish more would come back and join us”, she hopes. Zingrin Shishak, after his early training in Piano under his mother, Margaret Shishak, has gone on to get his musical degrees from the US. He did his Bachelor in Music from Wheaton College, and Master’s in Music at University of Tennessee, Knoxville, USA. Zingrin started learning piano at the age of 8. Married to Louis with two children, the couple teaches music at Patkai Christian College. Louis did her Bachelor in Music from University of Sheffield, UK. The husband and wife are both part of the orchestra along with his mother and about 60 from Patkai who are part of both the orchestra and choir. Commenting on the present music scenario in Nagaland, Zingrin says, “We’ve made a lot of progress in terms of music,” but adds, “It’s not easy to get qualified teachers. It’s not really available in India. You have to go abroad.” Talking about his preparation for the concert, Zingrin says, “I’m not 100% ready yet.” “If you’re 100% ready you can only play at 80% during the concert. You have to be 120% to play at 100%,” he explains. “I’m never happy,” he says and adds, “There’s still room for improvement, but it’s not easy.” Although he has worked hard for this concert, Zingrin is apprehensive that something might go wrong. He says, “You never know, it’s scary.”

She also holds a Bachelors degree in Communication Studies (Hons). She has since graduated with a Masters of Music Studies (Pedagogy). She currently teaches music full-time and has played with various orchestras. Judy Tay is also focussed mainly on teaching music and plays in a lot of Christian groups as well. They two musicians graciously shared insightful comments along with their experiences and wisdom gained from years of being a professional musician and teacher. the Bible exemplified on how different tribes came together to break down the wall. Citing the same, she said that if one want to repair division in society then it is important to come together as one. Further, she said that Music is beyond every language and it’s an instrument to enhance this. God gave us this gift of music which is beyond any language. Even when we have different languages, faith, and live in separate worlds we all come together in music as on and to praise God. Judy feels that to possess talents/gifts is one thing. But one needs discipline and practice to get far. As a teacher she describes how some people may not be so musical when they begin but with discipline and practise have known to accomplish great feats. Meanwhile Lydia advises, “If you are here just for competition or fame don’t do it. Because it is bound to disappoint. Music is a partnership, a relationship with people. Musicians need to build a relationship with people.”

Sophia is tutored by R.Kevichusa, Violin Maestro, and Lichanbeni under Bikram Banerjee, teacher from Kolkata who is also performing for the concert. The young girls confidently exclaim that ‘ever since they could remember they were sure they wanted to learn and play musical instruments’. Sophia cheekily adds that her mother was keen for her to take piano lessons. Way beyond her years, this poised and exuberant violinist with much acclaim already under her repertoire adds for good measure, “My grandfather was interested in musical instruments. He was so disappointed (you know) when his children did not follow his footsteps. So he supported me when I chose the Violin”. To the contrary, for Lichanbeni, it was her mother who suggested taking up the Viola instrument. Taking music classes together, at the Hope Centre for Excellence, Dimapur, these youngsters are used to names like Bach, Vivaldi and Mozart. So what do

their friends think about their participating in a Western Classical Concert? “The concert is kind of different from the usual shows everyone is used to. It keeps them guessing” they said. Balancing school, homework and music classes, they share that sometimes it does get tiring. “But it is fun and good, they said and adds that they practice when they are free and practice more when they have a show on the line. Suppose you practise a piece for so long, and you try hard to get it right again and again. It is discouraging. What do these girls like to do during spare time? “Oh you mean our ‘Interests’? They correct. Sophia likes to cook a lot, taking after her baker mum. While Lichanbeni likes to decorate just like her decorator mum. But ultimately it is their dream to be part of an Orchestra which travels to perform and get to meet people, saying that this dream inspires them more and boosts their interest to keep on playing. “After taking up music, there has been a difference in our lives. Music makes us well educated and we have learned so many new and different things. We are also more composed,” the two children concludes seriously. Amen to that.

Violence, vandalism and call for change stirs quiet Sikkim

gangTOK, april 4 (Tnn): Sikkim has generally been so quiet that even its more populated towns, like capital city Gangtok, seem perpetually blanketed under a thick Himalayan calm. The last few months, though, have broken that spell. Houses have been vandalised, cars burnt in dozens and a few local leaders murdered. Others have escaped violent attacks. At the bottom of this frightful churning may be the challenge posed by a man called PS Golay to Pawan Chamling's uninterrupted 20 years at the helm as Sikkim's CM. In simultaneous elections to the assembly and Lok Sabha seats in Sikkim, Golay, who formed a new party, the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha, just 14 months ago, has been drawing more crowds, louder cheers than Chamling. People are already talking about Chamling's desire to create a record as India's

longest serving CM, notching up 25 years, two more than Jyoti Basu, as wishful thinking. Ahead of everyone else in announcing Chamling's defeat is former CM Nar Bahadur Bhandari, who himself was chief minister for 15 years. Though it is anybody's guess how crucial the Bhandari factor will be in these elections for Sikkim, the man who was unceremoniously dislodged by Chamling and his Sikkim Democratic Front in 1994 has been 'blessing' all Morcha candidates. Clicking happy photos with many of Gole's men, Bhandari recently said, "Chamling has lost the elections." He went on to say that he withdrew his party, the Sikkim Sangram Parishad, from the latest contest "because of the SKM's parivartan (change) wave." As if to underline that change the SKM has fielded 26-year-old Bikash Basnet against Chamling, 62,

in Yangang, the place where the CM had started his political career from. Gole is confident. "Even the SDF's flag bearers will vote for us," he says. "And that is because Chamling is like Gaddafi. There is no democracy in his party. We will win all 32 assembly seats from here and will send our man to Parliament as well." Will history repeat itself then? Like Chamling who was industries minister in Bhandari's cabinet, Gole, too, was an influential member of Chamling's core team. And like Chamling who took a year or so to mount a successful revolt against Bhandari in 1993, Gole has also been out of the SDF officially only since February 4, 2013. Old timers in Sikkim still remember Chamling one day dramatically entering the state assembly holding a candle. He said he was "looking for democracy". Gole says he is doing the same.

But Chamling is no pushover. Sikkim has come a long way under him from the time it merged with India in 1975. Today it claims to have the lowest percentage of people below the poverty line, and its per capita income is higher than the national average. In its major hubs — Namchi, Gangtok, Rangpo, Singtam -- the prosperity is obvious. Moreover, he has promised to rid his state of poverty by 2017. As a former MLA in his ministry says, "It's easy to talk about Chamling not making it to the finish line this time. But the fact is that in the two decades that he has led the government, he has entrenched himself so deep throughout the state that it will take some doing to break that stranglehold." Until then, both parties have made violence a major issue, blaming each other for it, and are promising to bring peace to the hills that are unquiet like never before.

GNLF extends support to Bhaichung Bhutia Darjeeling, april 4 (ianS): In a boost to Trinamool Congress candidate Bhaichung Bhutia's prospects for the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal, the GNLF Friday announced its support for the former Indian soccer captain. "Bhaichung belongs to the hills. We are supporting him," the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) said in statement issued on behalf of party president Subhas Ghising. Bhutia is engaged in a tough fight for the April 17 polls in the constituency against the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM)backed Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Surinder Singh Ahluwalia and Communist Party of IndiaMarxist (CPI-M) candidate Saman Pathak. The GNLF spearheaded a violent movement in the

Ban on Congress in Saikul lifted Newmai News Network Imphal | April 4

THE BAN ON the Congress party by the Nagas and Kukis in Saikul assembly constituency or Saikul sub-division under Senapati district has been lifted temporarily with immediate effect. The ban was imposed since March 8. Kuki Inpi Saikul Gamkai (KISG) and Saikul Area Naga People's Organisation (SANPO), the two apex social bodies of the two communities in the subdivision or constituency met the government of Manipur led by deputy chief minister Gaikhangam. The meeting was also attended by two tribal MLAs and three members of ADC. According to KISG and SANPO, the deputy chief minister, the two tribal MLAs

and the three ADC memmers assured to meet the demands put forth by the two Saikul bodies after the ensuing Lok Sabha elections. "Having convinced by the deputy chief minister and the responsiblity taken by the two tribal MLAs and the three ADC members the ban or boycott on the Congress party in Saikul assembly constituency has been lifted temporarily with immediate effect," stated SANPO and KISG. ‘Translate Lenten Agreement into reality’ Naga Bodies welcome signing of Lenten Agreement SenapaTi, april 4 (Mexn): The United Naga Council has welcomed the Lenten Agreement signed by three Naga Political Groups and acknowledged the “courage and the vision of the Naga leaders in upholding the “Naga Concordant” and taking it forward towards realisation.” A press note from the UNC stated that the “spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation have found strong expression” in the Lenten Agreement. It further approved of the open invitation to the other Naga political groups to be partners of this “enlightened process.” “It is the ardent wish of the people that the Agreement will be translated into political reality at the earliest possible time,” it stated. It further congratulates the Forum for Naga Reconciliation for facilitating the reconciliation process tirelessly and with undaunted hope. The UNC pledged its continued support for the “noble mission and undertake to extend our humble efforts where and when called for.” ‘Uphold commitments of Lenten Agreement’ The Naga Women’s Union and the Naga Peoples’ Movement for Human Rights, while lauding the signing of the Lenten Agreement, has expressed hope, that the spirit of willingness and commitment towards the agreement is upheld. A press note from the NWU and the NPMHR called upon all to ensure that the objectives set forth in the agreement are realized. They further appreciated the Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR) for its tireless and continuous efforts to bring together all Naga political groups toward the formation of one Naga National Government and pledged their support and participation “in this very crucial and significant process which we believe will go a long way in fulfilling the common aspiration of our nation.”

jurisdictions of valley districts' police stations. These orders were issued without the knowledge and consent of the villagers concerned, KISG and SANPO alleged. In this connection several representations have

been made to the chief minister and the deputy chief minister to cancel the said orders and also to withdraw all the villages of Saikul sub-division from the jurisdictions of valley districts' police stations.

the GNLF in 2007 to form the GJM, which has now taken over the mantle of the Gorkhaland movement. The GJM forced Ghising to leave the hills in 2008. He returned before the 2011 assembly polls but went away again soon after his party received a drubbing in the polls. Ghising recently returned to the hills for the Lok Sabha polls. There was much speculation on whether he would put up a candidate or announce his support for some other party. Trinamool leader and West Bengal cabinet minister Gautam Deb welcomed the GNLF's move. "Bhaichung will win by a huge margin," said Deb. On the other hand, the CPI-M said Ghising was the latest pawn in the Trinamool's "use and throw" policy.

ZUF cautions NPF against intimidations

TaMenglOng, april 4 (nnn): Strongly opposing the alleged diktat imposed on the public by Naga People's Front (NPF) candidate Soso Lorho and his canvassing squad in Manipur Outer parliamentary constituency, the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) warned those elements today from intimidating the people especially in 'Zeliangrong areas'. "We heard that NPF candidate Soso Lorho and his canvassing squads are intimidating the people that those who do not vote for the candidate will be tagged anti-Nagas," alleged the ZUF. The Zeliangrong outfit said that this 'unethical and immoral imposition' leads to chaos and confusion in the society during the election time. "Therefore, to avoid such unwanted development in the society the ZUF warns those NPF supporters and

the candidate to stop such malicious act upon the public or face tough consequences. We have nothing to do with any candidate and his/her campaigning team who is campaigning based on true democratic principle and the party manifesto," the ZUF added. The ZUF appealed to the Zeliangrong frontal organizations not to indulge in the election saying it will invite stern public reaction and lack of trust. "Any frontal organization involving in election campaign and dictating the public for a particular candidate will be taken befitting action. At the same time, the front appeals to all the brethren to keep away from any forceful dictate but to exercise your liberty

"Every electorate of the Outer parliamentary constituency who is eligible to exercise his or her ‘right to vote’ has the prerogative right and liberty to choose his or her preference of candidates in any election of the Union of India," ZUF stated. "No one has the authority to forcefully intimidate the electorates in any manner for their selfish gain. The candidate who tries to indulge in such conduct cannot be tolerated at any cost," the ZUF said.

Conscience or Truth?

O

ur society is passing through a time of political impasse, social clouding, spiritual silence and tight-lipped, and self-ignited conscience. We are routinely busy with abusive languages, debunking and defamatory statements in our daily medias and communication without a healing vocabulary. No matter how much volume one blows, the will of God will prevail at the end of the day (Pro 19:21). The greatest regret in social life is character assassination because it is against what God wants us to be (Ex 20:16; Rom 12:16). The greatest gain in life is healing and loving communication as Christians. Biblical values are fossilized today by political rivalry and lob, and motives. Our civil society seems to be modernizing but without a true conscience of civic sense. Churches are busy with vertical activities and virtual routine but not knowing what is out there in the streets. In a society of perversion, vulgar and evil forces intrude and invade the hearts of our youth, schools and institutions, and children. Our youth become duress preys to permeation of influences detrimental to our social health. Preoccupation of facebook, internets, websites and digital revolution lull and incapacitate the ability and talents of our youth. Truth is diverted by captivated conscience. Where are the prophets gone today? Prophets are the few used by God to redirect people and society from wrong direction to right destiny. They were up to stand against corruption

and intentional mistake in the midst of opposition. The Old Testament prophets were not necessarily trained priests, ordained or full time religious leaders. They were ordinary lay people of credibility, integrity and trustworthiness. In the time of need such as today, may God raise business prophets to correct business circles, political prophets to reform political systems and correct management of public affairs, bureaucratic prophets to restore administrative integrity, patriotic prophets to reshape and redesign true spirit of nationalism, student prophets to deliver young blood from forces of looming and overshadowing darkness and misguiding influences, teacher prophets to cultivate quality of education, and, of course, spiritual prophets to renew and redirect churches to return to biblical centrality and a sense of whole body of Jesus Christ. Truth must transcend our applied conscience. Conscience of Truth Truth precedes conscience. Right conscience is the outcome of truth. Conscience without principle of Truth will evaporate and dissipate aimlessly. Truth is the orbit of a society or a government to rotate and regulate a destined journey. Truth and liar cannot go together. Truth rises above fragmented interests. Godgiven conscience can be consciously or unconsciously, selfishly or selflessly designed to guide your decision. The Bible terms it as narrow way or broad way. A conscience without God leads people to suicide, thievery, bur-

glary, corruption, and mismanagement of humanity. The need of society today is a conscience of truth. The Bible tells us that people who are born of God will not commit sin (1John 3:9). You cannot keep aside the truth in order to be a politician or another profession. For Christians, your conscience is guided by the principle of truth of the Lord Jesus Christ. Think of the same content of different colors of cups. Truth must be the content of our consciences, be political, business, church and society. The truth alone will set us free from sickness of guilty conscience. Generation Conscience Belief comes from truth. It is the Belief with our total being, trust and faith in the truth. For Christians, Jesus is the truth in whom we put our total faith. The Bible reminds us of the need of righteousness to lead and rule the course of people in right way (Pro 14: 34; 29:18). God called the Church to lead people to eternal life but it is preceded with total transformation as salt and light of the world. The Church is expected to be an organism of right conscience to social environment. It is the Church to blow the trumpet (Ezek 33:6) to warn and awake people by shading a sense of right and wrong. Rapid physical and material progress and developments will come to naught without total development of a person: body (dust), soul (living consciousness), and spirit (destined to either life or death). In this, the high point of a person is decision making age which is naturally high school and college ages. Delivering and

saving this age from clutches of destructive forces, human pollution, and slavery to evils is crucially important which is Generation Saving. What do you think to save our generation? Let us not fabricate and manipulate truth in shaping our generation. Let us set an immovable legacy to the upcoming ages. Truth alone will set our generation free. What must we do to deliver and empower our youth in Dimapur in particular, Kohima, and district capitals in general? Right conscience should have preceded what is called Protected Area Permit (PAP) even before its revocation by the MHA. Right conscience should also regulate the suspension of PAP. Satan targets our youth and triggers its fire upon them. What can we say about what is coming into our land through Dimapur to make our state a melting pot? We must take care of our youth by rescuing them from subtle and subversive schemes because what high political talk you are delivering, magnificent church buildings you are building, organized sermons being delivered in pulpits, and high magnitude of designs and plans you are contemplating are all at the mercy of the coming generation. How can we transform them from proliferating evils? The need of the hour is rediscovery of right conscience of truth. The consequence of a man of truth is different from that of a mere conscience. Let us return to a conscience of truth in the midst of busy rally of life goal.

On NGOs & Civil Bodies declaring their political support for candidates: Murdering Democracy

T

here has been a recent surge of media declarations and statements issued by NGOs and civil bodies about candidates whom they are supporting during every election. Is it right, just or a fair practice and an unbiased method in the freedom of choice when the fundamental right to vote of an individual is being trampled upon and trodden? Every person has the freedom to make his/her choice as granted by the constitution because the law of the land permits to exercise his/her own will and volition. So how can chairmen, GBs of heads etc. of various village councils, area and clan organizations, unions , hohos etc. issue such statements without taking the mandate and the confidence of the people ?Our land with the tag ‘Nagaland for Christ’ is getting more of a decadent and corrupt each passing day where most of our leaders are becoming like the biblical Esau who sold away his inheritance rights just for a morsel of food to satisfy his hunger for a single meal. They are also more of becoming like King Saul who did exactly the opposite of what God wished him to do and contradicting the very reason of putting him on the throne. Isn’t it a shameless act they are using such public platforms for their cheap selfish and personal gains? What right do they have to say that every individual under their organizations, jurisdiction or ambit has all agreed or resolved to support a particular candidate or a party? Why must they use the name of the office or chair of the particular organization to issue such undemocratic and unprincipled policy? Do they take a plebiscite or a referendum before such manipulative, biased and unimpartial announcement is made? Just because they have been elected/ selected to a certain position or a chair for a particular objective, it does not give them the whole right to sell away the mandate in their whims and fancies .No ,not at all. Are they sure everyone will vote for the same candidate that they pledged to support and as Phuveyi Dozo claimed by them? Remember, you can bring a horse to a water but you can never make it drink. I wonder why our Church and its leaders choose to remain so stiffstatement. MuMbai, april 4 (pTi): After launching accounts on Facebook and Youtube, the country’s largest lender SBI on Friday took one more step on the social media front by launching a twitter handle. confidence by those leaders aren’t blatantly disregarding the principles and aims of the Clean Election Campaign because they are stealing away the common man’s right to vote. Shame on the slogan we so proudly acclaim to profess ‘Nagaland for Christ’ when our so called leaders cannot even let the people express its own voice b voting but vote on behalf of the whole community and villages. Aren’t these declarations subjugating the true voice of the masses? So is it not making a mockery of the campaign of Clean Election? We, as a New Young Naga Generation never will succumb to such policies and misdeed of such vested interests. Beware ,the new young Naga is much wiser and intelligent than you thought to be. We have grown out of the cocoon and had come out of our shell now. We know what our rights are now. Nothing strengthen authority so much as silence and the New Young Naga Generation will no longer remain mute over all the daylight injustices that had been done right before his eyes and under his nose ,but not anymore. Those days are numbered and now over. We are not just a single voice but a thousand more voices echoing its roar of Dissent and Disagreement. And we agree to disagree with you and your pronouncement of your decision because it is a plain selling away of our birthright too which was and is never yours but to each own individual. If we agree with you then we also become another conspirator and collaborator who sold the pride and dignity of our own people and the tomorrow’s generation. An Honest Disagreement is a sign of progress rather than a Dishonest Agreement which is a sign of Weakness .We are strong now because we have been weak, we are fearless now because we have been afraid for too long and we are wiser because we have been foolish but as time is the greatest teacher, it has taught us well and hard about our rights and we no longer are the same ignorant like in the past. The young Naga has now the PIL ,the RTI, the new public forums on social networking sites .Remember the Arab Spring was brought by the social networking sites and those nations ruled with iron fists were freed from their tough beefy clutches of their corrupted tyranical rulers by the young generations coming together . If our leaders do not change, a time of either violent transition or a peaceful take-over by the New Generation will be taking place. It is just a matter of time. Let those leaders support anyone they want to from the inside of their bedrooms or whether they want to shout from their rooftops but they can never take away the inherent

rights of the people. Are they trying to snatch away the God-given rights of the masses to choose their leaders of their choice? Those leaders must know that they do not own the people or this world but they have borrowed it from tomorrow’s children and they have to hand it over to tomorrow’s generation. The trend they are setting will be adapted by the next generation they must be answerable to whatever deed they are doing today .Leaders of integrity and principles never toy with the mandate and rights of the people .When leaders become too autocratic they end up without any followers or say they become like ‘ A king without a kingdom’. Just because a sumptuous feast was laid on the election table once again with sweet promises that would never be kept does not mean you should forget all those lean years people have been left all alone which bereft of what your true worth was, dear leaders. If you want to be respected, earn it but never sell away your clan, village, organization, land and its people just to sort out some personal deal. You can sell yourself away as it shows how much your true worth is but please spare the young generation from your immoral and despicable schemes .It is said every people gets the government it deserves and also more to the point, every government too gets the electorates it deserves. True leaders never let the stark reality of misgovernance forgotten just for some decoy of self-profit.The New Young Naga Generation now clearly believes in the saying ‘IN ALL YOUR TIMES,PREPARE TO MEET THEM ALL ALIKE.WHEN YOU ARE THE ANVIL,BEAR; WHEN YOU ARE THE HAMMER,STRIKE…………… THE NEW YOUNG NAGA HAS BEEN THE ANVIL FOR TOO LONG, YES TOO LONG.THE TIME HAS COME FOR US NO LONGER TO REMAIN AS AN ANVIL BUT TO BE THE HAMMER NOW’ True Democracy works only when the people claim it as their own! True Democracy works only when the downtrodden masses and not men of power make decisions. True Democracy works only when power shifts from strongmen to common men. True Democracy will exist only when the decision making is given to ordinary people for their common benefit which matters rather than the few extra-ordinary ones who barters for their personal advantage. In the words of Emerson ‘Even God offers to every mind its choice between Truth and Repose’…….so why don’t our leaders? Do they think they are greater than God Himself ? Jonah Achumi Dimapur

Addressing a huge rally at Lazu which is under 56 Khonsa east assembly segment, Rio called for emotional integration of the Naga people while assuring that he would take up the problems and issues of not just the Naga people, but of the entire north eastern region as convenor of the North East Regional Parties Forum (NERPF). According to a press release, he informed the people that the NERPF had passed 17 points resolution and had submitted a memorandum to the Government of India through the Prime Minister and the Home Minister. The NERPF delegation had also called on the President of India to highlight the issues and problems of the north east-

CLP clarifies CLP leader Tokheho Yepthomi has clarified regarding his press release on “highhandedness by the Peren administration” during his visit to Peren district on April 3, that the EAC in question on particular incident was EAC Ahthibung and not EAC Peren (Sadar) “as stated due to misinformation.” He has expressed regret for the same.

ern region. He regretted that despite the NERPF taking up the issue of discrimination of people from the north east in the national capital and other metros, the Government of India had not taken up any concrete steps and it resulted in the unfortunate murder of Nido Tania, a youth from Arunachal.

Rio also called upon the people to cast their vote with a clear conscience, stating that only a regional party would be able to address the local issues and local problems. National parties only serve the high command, but for regional parties, the people are the real high command, the Nagaland Chief Minister

stated. He highlighted the vision of the regional parties and its look east policy. He informed that he had recently visited Myanmar and had interactions with the top leadership of Myanmar including the chief ministers of Saigaing and Mandalay. He said that Nagas are being recognized across

NPCC accuses Rio of representing communal forces Dimapur, april 4 (mExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has accused Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and his colleagues of “shamelessly parroting the language of communal forces led by the BJP-RSS whose hidden agenda if voted to power with clear majority subscribes to the theory of one nation, one culture and one rule of law.” This agenda, the NPCC said, “threatens the secular fabric of the nation where religious minorities will be at the receiving end and more so with a state like Nagaland dominated by Christians who are religious minorities in the larger context.” A press release issued by NPCC Media Cell stated that the current Lok Sabha elections have been more of a battle against the communal forces represented by the BJP whose ideological mentor, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) directs every move from its Nagpur headquarters. It mentioned that the RSS was banned and its leaders jailed in the aftermath of Mahatma Gan-

dhi’s assassination by the then Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel for its “divisive and communal agenda.” The RSS leaders were released only after giving an undertaking to abstain from political activities and focus only on socio-cultural activities, it added. NPCC further accused Chief Minister Rio of “literally” abandoning his people after promising too much to achieve nothing in 11 years of his “misrule” known more for massive corruption and failed governance. Moreover, Rio and the NPF has become the enemy of the state since the ideology of BJP-RSS is in contravention with the culture and beliefs of the people of Nagaland, NPCC asserted. “Rio has also miserably failed to answer the people on his new found mentor (BJP-RSS) commitment on issues of anti conversion laws; building of Ram Temple in Ayodhya; Total ban on cow slaughter; Uniform Civil Code and abrogation of Article 370 in J&K.” The statement also said that the BJP at the centre has failed to bring out its election

manifesto for the coming parliamentary elections “which goes to prove that the BJP has nothing to offer to the nation except to impose its communal and divisive agenda that harbors enough potential to disintegrate the nation.” With the state in dire financial situation and total breakdown of governance on all fronts, NPCC affirmed “it will be suicidal for the people to elect a communal party candidate in the form of Rio who is conveniently charting an escape route from the mess that he had generated as a result of his misrule as Chief Minister for the past 11 years.” As countdown for polling begins, NPCC claimed that people in other parts of the country have realized that Congress is the only party that can offer a stable government with enough inclusive policies that does not discriminate any religion, race, culture and region. Therefore, NPCC asserted, the prospects of Congress led UPA coming to power for the third consecutive time “is a foregone con-

Kohima, april 4 (mExN): Congress candidate K V Pusa has cautioned the people against a “communal force which is a threat against secular structure of the country with whom the NPF has befriended.” According to a press release, Pusa had stated, party like BJP has no vision and programme for people “but its agenda is Hindutva and finish off Christians and other minority communities in the country.” Addressing election rallies in Zunheboto and Wokha today, the Congress candidate for the ensuing Lok Sabha polls said BJP has become a fractured party due to internal differences over leadership and policies. He assured that UPA would come to power at the centre and urged people to vote for congress for all round development in the state. He cited as a Christian dominated state, last year, when people were celebrating Christmas, people of Zunheboto were denied the same due to an unfortunate incident that shock the state, adding, such incident happens “because of the inactivity of the government, who runs short of mechanisms or laws that are applied.” “This is the same candidate in the fray for this ensuing Parliamentary Election assuring the people of North-East that he can and will bring solu-

tions in the region. Where was he during that incident, when he is exposed to the people that he can’t even handle a case of molestation, how can he imagine himself of solving the NE problem,” Pusa questioned. Taking a potshot at Rio, the Congress leader said years of rampant financial mismanagement and corruption has emptied the state’s coffer while personal wealth of the chief minister and his coteries have grown manifold. He stated under the present government there is a growing resentment of public against militant groups for its high handedness and ruthlessly taxing the people. Pusa further alleged that the DAN government has created an alarming trend of widening gap between the rich and the poor adding that poverty which was unheard of in the olden days is rearing its ugly head. He said rampant corruptions in all government schemes, appointments to government jobs for few privileged ones who are well connected, contract and supply works to chosen few have ensured that the power and wealth of the state gets confined to few hands “which is a dangerous trend and is already generating social economic unrest.” Pusa also said Nagaland Retirement from pub-

lic employment (Amendment) Act 2007 enhanced the superannuation age of the government employees from 57 to 60. He said the amendment was done to gain political mileage on the eve of assembly elections that was due in March 2008. He asserted after getting the support of those employees, the government enacted the 2nd Amendment Act 2009 following which more than 300 employees were forced to retire at one go on October 31, 2009. He further added large numbers of work-charged employees have been discriminated despite office memorandum order for regularization due to vacancy arising out of new retirement act. He also highlighted the “rampant misuse” of Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) and accused the NPF MPs of siphoning off public funds. He urged people not to vote for such persons and assured to equally distribute funds to all districts if people elect him this time. For better governance and transparent government, Pusa appealed to the voters to cast their votes “for a party that is trying to do its best for the people of the country.” “Vote for a secular party and not communal forces that have entered Nagaland.”

Dr. Nicky Kire campaigns for NPF Vehicle hijacked Kohima, april 4 (mExN): MLA and Parliamentary Secretary Dr. Nicky Kire has scheduled an intensive election campaign in all localities under 9th Kohima Town A/C from March 31 to April 5. He has urged the people of his constituency to actively participate in the upcoming parliamentary election and to vote for the DAN consensus candidate Neiphiu Rio to ensure that “Nagaland gets her due share of development and attention from the centre,” according to a press release. “Nagaland having a single representation in the Lok Sabha has remained ignored for too long and now we have a tall leader able and ready to contribute to the affairs of the nation and also advance the cause of the Nagas,” Dr. Nicky Kire asserted during his campaign. He also added that the government at the centre and the planning commission of India has reduced the state’s share of central funds much to the detriment of the people of Nagaland. Yet, the DAN government of Naga-

hanging/display of banners on public and private buildings/structures without the consent of the owners by political parties in and around Mokokchung town is a clear violation of the provision of the Model Code of Conduct and the Nagaland Prevention of Defacement of Property Act, 1985. land led by Neiphiu Rio has spared no efforts in ensuring timely release of salaries to its employees despite the financial constraints being imposed. With regard to the non-payment of salaries to SSA teachers, he regretted that the Central government has failed the teachers by not clearing their salaries on time and for which “the opposition party was trying hard to malign the image of the DAN government.” The conventional practice and logic among Indian politicians, Dr Nicky Kire stated, has been to seek the post of chief minister and be the head of one’s domain so much so that even the union ministers rush back to be the chief minister wherever and whenever the opportunity arise. He affirmed that Rio enjoys absolute majority and faces no threat or challenge to his leadership. “He has provided a stable and progressive government for over a decade and he can continue to do so for the whole term but the sacrifice of this coveted post of Chief Minister shows the clear vision

and determination for the advancement and development of Nagaland and other disadvantaged states of the North-East of India.” Further, he stated it was evident from all sources and opinion polls in national media that the NDA is all set to form the Government in Delhi. And, Neiphiu Rio, he said, shares a very good equation with the leaders of NDA and also commands a great deal of respect and trust from his fellow politicians so much to the extent of entrusting him with the responsibility of being the convenor of North East Regional Parties Forum (NERPF). Stating that the NPF enjoys the mandate and support of the Nagas, the MLA expressed confidence that Nagas will elect Rio with a record margin shattering the highest victory margin of 4.83 lakhs set by former MP of Nagaland CM Chang. He appealed to the electorates of 9th Kohima Town A/C to unequivocally speak as one and support the DAN consensus candidate Neiphiu Rio by casting their precious votes in his favour.

It is, in essence, a new beginning where one lets go of the old fields and starts the sowing of seeds in new fields. Aoleang gives us an opportunity to cleanse ourselves of our old prejudices and start afresh as a person, a village or as a community.” APO president also challenged the gathering to reach out to other communities and establish meaningful and mutually beneficial relationships. Konyak Union, Mon, president S. Manlip in his speech called upon the people to value and practice the good culture and traditions and also to foster better relationship with friends. KUK first president L. Noklem also spoke on the occasion. KUK president P. Longang delivered presidential address. Cultural presentations and Aoleang feast marked the occasion.

Saving culture preserves your identity Lemwang Chuhwanglim

In this way, every single behavior and artifact of the Naga society has historical meaning. This meaning becomes the cultural identity of a person; both within and outside of the particular society. I now want to focus on the significance of cultural identity through artifacts. According to anthropologist Tim Ingold, when we make something, there is always meaning in our minds about what we are going to make. Which meaning comes first before the artifact is made? For instance, when someone builds a house, makes furniture, a statue, a sculpture, dresses, cos-

tumes, and so on, the first and foremost thing that comes to the human being is the meaning. This meaning is related to the way of life of the people in the community (Ingold, 1993). To argue whether this is culture or not will lead to an unending story. This is why Fiona Cownie says that culture is not an easy concept. However, it gives the enduring tools to create perceptions and a common idea about what it means to be of a culture in a particular society (Cownie, 2004). If culture is a way of thinking, feeling and believing that is integrated intp a way of life of people (Geertz, 1973),

Naga people would inevitably have common thinking, feelings and beliefs about those artifacts portrayed in different traditional costumes. Similarly, many Naga tribes have various artifacts colorfully patterned and vibrant such as shawls, mekhala (wrap around), necklaces, hornbill bird feathers, wild boar teeth, bear fur and many others. Among these, so many artifacts, shawls, and mekhala (wrap around) are often displayed by the Naga people who wear the woolen shawl during the winter season. For instance, an Angami women’s shawl is called

Loramhosii and it can also be used as a wrap around; it has one name, but it can have dual meanings and purposes. There is a slight difference when it is worn as a shawl; the tips of the Loramhosii are woven in white. When it is worn as wrap around, the tips are green in shade. The Loramhosii is worn to indicate status and how young unmarried girls symbolize and show their single status (Azo). An Ao woman’s shawl is called Angdong Su (Etsung Su) and it is a common shawl. It is woven with royal blue and black yarn and is starched. Some come with bigger black lines and some with thinner lines (ignore the smoking pipe). Osak Sü was worn in olden days. It is woven with white yarn and dyed with wild Osak leaves (which give a discolored black tint). It is still worn by women during festivals. (Angdong Sü and Züngijang, or Waro Süpedi, are commonly worn by Ao women on all occasions) (Taliakam). Chang men’s shawls are colorfully decorated and the ornaments convey meaning to the observer as it signifies one’s identity. It also acts as a form of non-verbal communication to the people. Costumes are more than simple articles of clothing; they are aesthetic expressions of culture and identity. Amongst all its costumes, the Changs assign a great importance to their shawls. From the shawl,

soil and mulch up against a house or fence to protect it from drying winds. Burying the pot evens out the temperature for the roots so there are no sudden drops or super hard freezes," Velasco said. Another strategy is burying just the pot part of the bonsai under a bench in the winter, and covering the bench with some clear plastic. In addition to selecting the right variety, beginners need to understand bonsai stress and watering, Velasco said. "A lot of times people bring home a bonsai and it drops its leaves and looks unwell. It's just stressed out. It needs time to adjust, and a little patience," he explained. "Monitor the water very carefully. Without leaves it won't need as much water. Hold off on water until the soil dries out. And little by little, when you hold off on water, buds will start to appear. And as that starts to happen, the need for water will start to increase." Many bonsai growers keep the tip of a chopstick deep in the soil toward the back of the pot as a moisture gauge. "If the chopstick is moist you don't need to water. But you never want the roots in the pot to get completely dry. Water it only when it's almost dry," Velasco said. Water from the top down and make sure the water drains out the bottom of the pot. As for pruning, allow the tree to grow five to seven leaves before pruning it back by about two leaves of the new growth, Velasco said. "Only prune what's actively growing. Trees need to grow to be happy and healthy," he said. "If you're on top of your game, the tree will repay you by being healthy and beautiful. Just try to appreciate what the bonsai is trying to express to you."

"But if you are going to play the game you have to think of both sides." Company leaders have to be conscious of what impact their own views may have on the success of their organization, Culbert argues. While some leaders, such as Starbucks Corp. head Howard Schultz, have been outspoken in their political positions, it is often in a vein that is line with the ethos of his company. Eich said in a statement Thursday that Mozilla's mission is "bigger than any one of us, and under the present circumstances, I cannot be an effective leader." His resignation represents an about-face from his confident and sometimes defiant remarks in an interview published earlier this week by the technology news service Cnet. Insisting that he was best choice to be CEO, Eich told Cnet that it would send the wrong message if he were to resign or apologize for his support of Prop. 8. "I don't think it's good for my integrity or Mozilla's integrity to be pressured into changing a position," Eich said. "If Mozilla became more exclusive

"If Mozilla cannot continue to operate according to its principles of inclusiveness, where you can work on the mission no matter what your background or other beliefs, I think we'll probably fail," he said. Mozilla chairwoman Mitchell Baker apologized for the company's actions in an open letter online Thursday, saying that Eich is stepping down for the company's sake. "We didn't act like you'd expect Mozilla to act. We didn't move fast enough to engage with people once the controversy started. We're sorry. We must do better," Baker wrote. She said that Mozilla believes both in equality and freedom of speech and that "figuring out how to stand for both at the same time can be hard." Mozilla is still discussing what is next for its leadership.

ulture is an identity based on the primordial way of life among the Naga society. This culture is regarded as a traditional way of life, embodied in a particular band or community of customary behavior, institutions and artifacts (Ingold, 1993) among the Naga society. I understand culture as a common understanding and identification of practices, behaviors, things and knowledge that emerges from the integrated ideas of the common people in a particular society. This uniformity of thought being oneness and “sense of belonging” in a society, despite great diversity, that becomes the identity of a particular ethnic group which plays a significant role in culture. In this way, Naga people have the feeling of belonging through a cultural identity in language, traditions, artifacts, appearance and so on. When cultural identity in language is concerned, there is a notion of commonality of language among the Nagas, For instance, among the Konak tribe, each individual has the agency to identify his/ her position as a younger or an older person by using a prefix when he/she addresses someone in the society. An older person is always addressed with a prefix Ajeisong (older brother), Anyasong (Older sister), Tanti (Middle

sister/brother), Ahusong (older uncle), Ahuki (younger uncle), Pushong (oldest grandfather), Pishong (oldest grandmother), Kira (youngest brother/sister) and so on. The same identity of language is found among other Naga tribes. In this way, language plays a significant role in cultural identity among any ethnic group based on the commonality in the society (Friedman, 1995). With a topic such as “saving culture is saving identity”, one may argue for obliterating some noncontextual parts of a culture, such as headhunting and a few others. Indeed there are some cultural practices among the Nagas that cannot be saved from generation to generations. However, as American socialist Dean Bell expresses, today each of us needs to regain our cultural past and a lost traditional identity (Bell, 1978). As a whole, Naga people need a deep concern on saving culture that can remain from generation to generation; both orally and written. Saving culture is important because culture is your identity that represents where you come from and to which ethnicity you belong. One may argue that identity changes; yes, the identity of a person changes when he/ she gets out of a particular society to become a part of another society. How-

ever, as long as a person lives in the society of the culture in which she/he grows up, the particular culture from the commonality of the society at large remains her/his identity. This means that although social and cultural evolution takes place, the history of the particular society will remain the identity of the people in that particular society. Similarly, the French historian Jacques Le Goff expresses that in our cultural identity, we search for the primordial meanings found in the past that allow the discovery of the past to have an authentic culture in the present (Friedman, 1995).

the public could easily make out the special status of a man. It says that in the past, a person was not allowed to wear the shawl of his/her choice, as it stood to signify the social status of that person (Benjamin Chang). Konyak shawls with red and a thin line of black color has the design of a sculpture that is adopted from sculpts found in a horizontal beam found in a Morung. Morung is the most significant and the primal house built in every village. There are many other meanings in the different artifacts from other tribes such as the Sumi, Phom, Sangtam, and so on, in Naga society. In this way, the meaning portrayed in cultural costumes becomes the identity of the people. People in the Naga ethnic society must save this cultural identity so that it remains from generation to generation. Every single Naga should be encouraged to know the meaning of this cultural identity without relegating the historical meaning of it. It should also be encouraged to give a cultural education to young people so that he/she does not end up in mortification when such valuable cultural identity is kept unknown. The author would like to convey a significant and a prosperous Aoleang and Monyu festivals to people from Konyak and Phom tribes who are celebrating their cultural festival throughout this week.

Bonsai: the haiku of the tree world Mozilla CEO resigns after furor over gay rights Katherine Roth

Many people have a bonsai story: a first bonsai, a struggling bonsai. And many of these stories do not end happily, at least for the bonsai. But the very best bonsai stories are about passion and beauty and transformation. "A dewdrop hanging for a split-second — that is bonsai," said Julian Velasco, the curator of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's bonsai collection and C.V. Starr Bonsai Museum. "It's very Zen-like. It's awesome." For Velasco, who nurtures over 350 bonsai trees at the botanic garden — one of the largest and oldest bonsai collections on public display outside Japan — it all started with a bonsai he purchased as a young man at a street fair in San Francisco. "Pretty quickly ... I knew it would be a lifelong path," he said. Bonsai is horticulture, art, philosophy and even a way of life in the form of a single tree, lovingly pruned and trained to exist in a small pot so that it reflects the majesty of the natural environment, he explained. "When you see the Grand Canyon or Yosemite, you are taking in the emotion of the place as much as the visual image," and bonsai is about that emotion, he said. It is the haiku of the tree world. Luckily for beginners, who have not yet attained a level of oneness with their new bonsai, learning to nurture a bonsai has never been easier. Expert help, once found only in Japan or China, is now more readily available at bonsai clubs and shops around the world. The American Bonsai Society lists bonsai clubs across the United States and Canada, and Bonsai Clubs International lists clubs worldwide. "Most U.S. states now have at least a couple of bonsai societies, and interest seems to be grow-

ing," said David Bogan of Evansville, Indiana, who is on the board of the American Bonsai Society. "About 30 years ago a friend brought a bonsai for me from Hawaii, and I've been hooked ever since. Now my wife and I have hundreds of bonsai," he said. "Bonsai are a long-term commitment, though, and most take at least a decade to create. Some can hardly go a day without some kind of care. It's almost like having a pet." Bonsai, Japanese for "planted in a tray," originated in China in around 200 A.D., and the art spread several hundred years later to Japan. The art of bonsai was introduced to the U.S. in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and at least one of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden bonsais is over 200 years old. Although Velasco said the ultimate goal is to "open your heart to the tree," he has a few more practical tips for novices. The first is to choose a variety of tree suited to your environment. Bonsai are trees or shrubs, and most varieties should be grown outside, where they

require a period of dormancy in winter. For most people, however, who want to grow their bonsai indoors or keep them outdoors only in warmer months, tropical varieties like the ficus or Australian brush cherry, with its interesting flower and bark, are good choices. Both are sturdy enough to endure a few beginners' mistakes, do well indoors and can be kept outside so long as temperatures are above 60 degrees. Another good option, particularly for people with access to an outdoor growing space, is Chinese elm, which is adaptable and can also be grown indoors. The next step along the continuum of hardiness is junipers, particularly Chinese and procumbens varieties. Small varieties of azaleas, which are sturdy with nice leaves and flowers, are also popular among bonsai enthusiasts, Velasco said. Outdoor bonsai are delicate, however, and need to be protected once temperatures reach 20 degrees and colder. "Most people will bury just the pot part of the bonsai in

Reality Check, leaving aside politics N

ever in the history of free independent India has the grand old Congress party faced the prospect of complete irrelevance as it readies itself to face the moment of truth – the ‘saach ka saamna’. It is no political rhetoric when we say that the Lok Sabha election 2014 will go down in history where the people in the rural areas and in the urban towns and cities, literate and illiterate, rich and poor, north and south, east and west, regional and national, Hindus and Muslims, Christians and the Parses, the Buddhists and the Jains, all came to that ultimate meeting point of agreeing to the bitter truth that it is not just any other party but the mother of all the parties – the Congress party which beyond all reasonable factors of doubt is in reality a hardcore communal party in its mindset. The Muslims in India always fearing at the back of their mind that India as Hindustan might one day be provoked and rightfully so, would go the Pakistan way of segregating, isolating and illtreating the minorities, the Hindus and Christians in particular as second class citizens and as such had always voted en-block inorder to protect their interests with the Congress party being the main beneficiary. Coming direct to the point, the Muslims of India had been the major vote bank of the Congress. While the majority Hindu Indians inspite of whatever they say and which ever party they might be rooting for ultimately presses the EVM button on caste lines, the Muslims were very obedient to what they were generally told by their political and religious elders. The Congress had all these years fed on this fear by feeding this fear and even covertly engineering riots from behind the scene. However it has been just a oneway street. While the political party they voted for benefitted, the Muslims just could not see through the cosmetic benefits that came their way. When the Muzaffarnagar riots took place the Congress was quick to blame the BJP as usual and the ruling Samajwadi Party of inaction which was very much true. Rahul Gandhi even went to the ex-

tent of visiting the Muslim riot victims. So far so good. But now with the decision of the Samajwadi Party to not field any candidates to fight both Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi the people seems to have got the picture. The Lok Sabha election will come and go but the ruling Samajwadi Party will remain and the Muslims of Uttar Pradesh cannot effort to antagonize it. They have already suffered enough. Hence like it or not the Muslims of UP have to vote for the Samajwadi Party or any other party the SP boss wanted them to. But in doing so Netaji Mulayam Singh Yadav knows the advantage goes to the BJP or Mayawati’s BSP – both his political rivals and hence the decision not to fight the mother-son duo. The Congress as it is with no hold in Uttar Pradesh is not a threat but the obligation of Sonia and Rahul will come handy if at all he is to play a national role. In both scenario he wins and so why not a riot to make it sure. And working behind the scene of the Mazaffarnagar riot is the Party you have guessed which is as good as mine. They get the muslim vote by default in that two constitutiencies. So much for secularism. With India opening up its economy, Indians as a whole benefitted but minus the North-East and the Muslims. The per-capita income of the average Indians increased with extra money to burn, there were jobs for the taking, the literacy rate increased, Indian names became permanent fixtures on the superrich lists, natural resources got exploited, multi-national companies made India their home and India also had its own Silicon valleys. Amidst such advancement the Muslims got confused by the day. Neither did they have extra money to burn nor did their literacy bar graph spiked. The presence of some Pakistani rotten apples in India saw to it that all Muslim youths became suspects, terrorists or terrorists in the making. They expected the Congress to come to their rescue but the Congress very conveniently had only Modi to be blamed for all the ills the Muslims were facing and did nothing to alleviate their fears. Infact

the congress were feeding on that fear. And then again the muslims saw that the much feared BJP Party had more Muslim leaders than the Congress. The Congress in their policy to always maintain the muslims as a vote bank had intentionally or unintentionally ghettoized the muslims and forced them to face the brunt of everything that was going wrong with the Congress party. The muslims are no more surprised that muslims living in Gujarat today are doing exceedingly well in every parameter of wellbeing, and just as fish takes to water they are taking to Modi’s slogan and model of ‘development first’. Gujarati muslims today say, OK Godhra happened but in the first place it was because nearly a hundred Hindu pilgrims - Kar Sevas were burnt alive to death inside the infamous train. However much the propaganda wing of the Congress try to paint N.Modi as a devil incarnate they cannot just explain why Muslims are flocking towards Modi. Take M.J Akbar, a staunch congressman with a never say die attitude who had with his multifaceted personality been the ever Gandhi family loyalist for which the Gandhi family should and must remain forever grateful today is wearing the much preferred hat of the BJP spokesperson. The Congress actually do not digest uplifting of the muslims beyond a certain marked level. This in itself speaks volume of the Congress stagnancy and taking for granted attitude of the Congress party’s uncureable disease. It is but natural and again speaks volume about the state and condition of a political party when party men and women fights for the party ticket. While even a senior leader of Jaswant Singh’s stature was denied the BJP’s party ticket and asked to toe the Party line or face expulsion, the Congress Party’s ministers and heavy weights from the Prime Minister to Finance, External Affairs to Home, from Information and Broadcasting to Agri and its allied, having seen the writing on the wall is doing their utmost best to avoid the ignominity and humiliation of a resounding defeat in the

coming election and requesting to be burdened and sacrificed for Party works. Some call this trend of the Congress ‘the height of hypocrisy’. The only potent issue that the Congress had was to paint Modi with the color of communalism but with the Supreme Court having given the clean chit to Modi, it is but natural that the issue has been given an unsung quiet burial. Anyway, ask any Political Science student about the provisions the founding father of our constitution Dr Ambedkar has provided to safeguard secularism and we see all misgivings collapse like a house of cards. I for one am not a critic of Mayawati for erecting the statues of fellow Dalit Dr Ambedkar. Dr Ambedkar is the sole reason that the Indian constitution is studied and followed up in the constitutions of many a nation that got independence in around and after India got her independence. Despite his immense contribution to the idea of India as a free nation and a republic he never received his due and it was all because he was a dalit. It is poetic justice that Dr Ambedkar is being recognized today even as the Gandhis shouting and kicking is being relegated to the back ground. Never in the history of Nagaland since statehood has an opening, an opportunity in every way one look at it looks so promising and surreal. We see the very dramatic decline of the Congress regime in the centre as never before even as the NPF led government victimized as it is by the central government is at its best of strength having won three state assembly elections consecutively. The state of Nagaland surrounded by Congress ruled states has for long cried itself hoarse against the cruel step-motherly treatment of the UPA government. But having managed to not only hold its fort but even expand beyond its borders have earned itself the respect of not just the ‘Big Brothers’ but the ‘Big Boss’ as well. As such it is no surprise that today N.Rio the Chief Minister of Nagaland is easily the tallest men standing without any crutches what so ever in the North-East not accountable to any ‘Big Boss’

but very much on his way to become the ‘Big Boss’ of not just Nagaland but that of the North-East & beyond. As it is, Rahul Gandhi is no longer in that gear of canvassing to win the Lok Sabha election which he knows before-hand is a lost cause and as such the Congress in Nagaland should have understood and taken the moral high ground by accepting Rio’s idea of the Nagas having a consensus candidate. Rejecting the idea with the justification that it was suggested only after Rio had declared his candidature was just too amateurish and Oh! Very shortsighted as well. It is not Rio who is blowing his trumpet but just as any lay person sees and knows, the time, the circumstances, the power of now, the power of tomorrow, the reputation, the capability, the acceptability infact the everything all points to Rio and favors him alone. One for all, all for one and he is the one. His weight alone as a Chief Minister for more than a decade where anti incumbency which is the common enemy every politician fear and dread became his friend speaks volume of his political acumen. Nagaland today is at a juncture where we can be truly very confident that the so many problems and contradictions that we all are aware of but felt helpless can actually be brought to a closure. We can now not hope but be assured of those developments other congress ruled states of the North East enjoyed but was denied to us. We can now breathe easy and thank God for the circumstances which HE alone manipulated in Nagaland’s favor. The BJP along with its more than a dozen allies will be a counter check to each other and in this scheme of things our own Rio will be holding forth. Please do be the father, the brother and the friend of every Naga irrespective of Party affiliations, religion, caste, creed or color and remain our super-achiever. The ball is in your court Boss. Allow us to hope and pray that God’s work in play never goes in vain. Our prayer remains. Benito.Z.Swu Dimapur

A Swiss Visiting Nagaland And The North East Again Fredy Bodmer, Switzerland

the name “GANDHI” I dropped in on the Director to find out how come. He was surprised and enquired why I, a foreigner was interested. So I told him of our longstanding (Monika longer than me, Fredy) connection with Rajmohan Gandhi, grandson of the Mahatma and many other friends in India, including the SIMC. He was thrilled and in typical Italian, lively manner told me that all the different Italian Colleges in Merano got united under this one name “GANDHI” with the theme: “Be the change you want to see in the world.” Out of 3 propositions, an Italian Writer and Poet, a radical South Tyrol Nationalist and Gandhi, the Mahatma was chosen by the parent-, studentand College-Council. Director Aliprandini said, that the problems with individual students and families, the political mounting tensions between the Italian and German language groups and the economic turmoil in Europe, he was doubly happy to have the Mahatma as an extraordinary example from outside our continent. It’s of great help and inspiration to me as well as a challenge for the college, students and staff, he said. Leaving he thanked me for the spontaneous visit and said that it made his day, apparently it did not start so well. He asked me to keep in touch. He told me that beginning of next year, dates still to be fixed, he’s arranging a major event on the theme Gandhi, and other great Asian people (Dalai Lama), inviting specialists on Asia from other parts in Italy. He asked me to be there too. The longer our exchange went on the more enthusiastic he became and “warmed up”, and after a delicious espresso he said “I am Riccardo” to “GANDHI” Colleges in Merano, which I answered: “I am Alfredo”. Two South Tyrol, ITALY happy men, friends bid farewell. RajPassing an Italian College with mohan Gandhi, the grandson of Ma-

fter 10 days in Delhi, one month in Tamil Nadu, short spells in Chennai, Bangalore and Kolkata, my wife and I have come to the salubrious Sechü-Zubza, near Kohima, for some weeks to meet people in this region for the fifth time. Nagaland striving for unity and India’s election battle are the talk of everyone and fill the newspapers and TV channels. The two articles below, about Italy are a guide and challenge of the most urgent needed values for Europe and the world facing grave economical (high unemployment), financial and political (Crimea) turmoil too. Election also means examination not only of the candidates, their motives and deeds, but also our own. “Do I walk the Talk”, as Mahatma Gandhi would say, him not striving for politics but serving selflessly the masses. Gandhi lived by the guidance of the “Inner Voice” correcting and directing him on the path of nonviolence and truth. Not only Nelson Mandela, the recently demised great statesman of South Africa was an exemplary follower of these values, so is Rajmohan Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma and of Rajagopalachari. Together with other sound leaders, men and women in India, he may fulfill MG’s vision come true. That these values are alive in Italy has changed my attitude towards our neighbouring country. We Swiss often feel superior, but are in the same boat to examine where we are heading to. The spiritual values that brought growth to nations have always come from the East. I am deeply, deeply grateful to India’s Soul, Mother Teresa and the Dalai Lama and the faith and courage of Daw Aung San Sue Kyi.

A Golden Boy Of The Underprivileged ?

Jeremiah Pame: "My mother sells vegetables in the market and my father goes to field and I have to cook for my younger brothers and I have to study for my exam." That was what a little boy said when I asked him about his studies. His name is Martin Newme, he is only 12 years old. He is extraordinarily good in studies despite poverty and hardships. He studies at United Builders School, Tamenglong, Manipur. AMAZING FACTS: He has been getting only FIRST POSITION, ever since he started going to school at Tamenglong. Sometimes parents of his classmates will be surprised to see this boy some would even say,"Wow this little village boy has been getting first position all these years !" His handwriting is exceptionally good. Now he is in Class 6. He wants to become an IAS officer. When I met him and his father last December, the father said " He studies very hard. he got first position throughout the year." PARENTS: His mother is illiterate. she sells vegetables in the market. His father is just a matriculate, he cultivates paddy and vegetables field. He runs from pillar to post just to make both ends meet. His village is around 60 Km away from the town. So he has to cultivate field in the village and when he has completed some works in the village, he comes to town just to be with his familyfor a while. There he goes to work and earn daily wages. PAINFUL REALITIES: Martin is just only 12 years old. He has 2 younger brothers. they also go to the same school. When the parents are away to earn money, Martin cooks for them and takes them to school. Even after taking care of his brothers he has to study hard. When I asked his father just a few days back, my heart broke for this little hero. "He is still wearing last year's school uniform because we cannot afford to buy him new one till now. I'm waiting for some money which i had earned some days back. Sometimes life becomes too hard. I wish I could provide everything, but to tell the truth, some evenings, I'll be worried how to get food for the next day. I just hope God will provide!” In December 2013 when I met this boy i just gave him Rs. 1000 to buy new cloths for Christmas but he did not buy clothes, he just gave it to his father so that his 2 younger brothers could get Christmas dresses. I'm sharing this story to tell fellow Naga brothers and sisters that there are so many children who are exceptionally intelligent but they just don’t have their basic necessities. If Martin is provided with proper facilities he would definitely become an IAS officer someday. Those who are born and brought up in a good family please make the best use of every privilege and opportunity. Because there are many children who wish to be like you.

Shakti Mills rapes: Death penalty for offenders

MuMbAi, April 4 (iANS): For the first time, an Indian court Friday sentenced to death three people, convicted of repeat offences of gang-rape -- of a telephone operator and a photojournalist in the Shakti Mills Complex here last year. A Mumbai court ordered the death sentence for the trio -- Vijay Jadhav (18), Qasim Hafiz Sheikh, alias Qasim Bengali (20) and Salim Ansari (27) -- in the gang-rape of a photojournalist, said Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam. The three convicts have already been sentenced to life imprisonment till death in the July 31, 2013 gang rape of an 18-year-old call centre employee. They later committed a repeat offence targeting the photojournalist Aug 22, 2013, in the same abandoned Shakti Mills complex, Nikam said of the landmark verdict. Delivering the verdict, Principal Sessions Judge Shalini Phansalkar-Joshi also sentenced convict Siraj Khan to life imprisonment. Nikam said the three convicts and their accomplices not only committed the brutal rape, but laughed and made fun of the victim as she cried with folded hands and begged for mercy.

‘Shakti Mills gangrape verdict landmark, will act as a deterrent’

MuMbAi, April 4 (ibNliVe): Calling it a landmark judgement, prosecution lawyer Ujjwal Nikam said, “this is the first time in the country that a court has given death sentence in a rape case where accused have been charged with repeated offence. Repeat offenders should be dealt with seriously.” A Mumbai Sessions Court on Friday, handed death penalty to the three repeat offenders Vijay Jadhav (19), Kasim Bengali (21) and Mohammed Salim Ansari (28)- in the Shakti Mills gangrape case. Mumbai Police Joint Commissioner Himanshu

Roy hailed the verdict and said, “The court has given a distinct and good verdict, it will act as a strong deterrent.” Joint Commissioner Crime Mumbai Sadanand Date echoed the same feeling and said

that the verdict will send a strong message. “This will send a strong message that law enforcement agencies act in a decisive manner. The complainant helped the police in solving the case. However, Human Rights activist Kavita Krishnan said that the arguments in the case were highly derogatory. “The way the arguments in the court equated rape to death is highly demeaning. The law enforcing agencies also should be held responsible for not being able to arrest these convicts after their first crime,” Krishnan said.

Police officials escort one of the four convicts in a gang rape case to a court in Mumbaion Friday, April 4. An Indian court on Friday sentenced to death three men who raped a photojournalist inside an abandoned textile mill in the financial hub of Mumbai last year. A fourth defendant was sentenced to life in prison, Nikam said. (AP Photo)

“The trio also boasted that they had committed several rapes on the mill premises and nobody had been able to catch them so far. It was these brave victims who came forward and ensured that they are brought to justice,” he said, welcoming the judgment. Nikam added that in view of this “demonic” behaviour of the rapists, the prosecution sought the

most stringent punishment for the accused, under the Indian Penal Code’s section 376(E), for ten different aggravating circumstances. “Though the victim was defenceless, helpless, and crying, the accused cruelly beat her, raped her in a particular manner. One of the accused also boasted that they are very dangerous people,” he said, citing one

of the aggravating circumstance for the enhanced punishment. The prosecution also pointed out how the accused displayed “depravity of the minds” and enjoyed the act even as the victim was totally defenceless before them. “Their boasting was a big challenge to the investigating agencies which worked hard and successfully brought them to book.

They did not deserve any mercy,” Nikam said. He added that the defence, in view of the young age of the convicts, wanted an opportunity to be given to them for reforming themselves, but the prosecution strongly opposed any leniency as they did not show any leniency to the victims. “A stringent punishment would help serve a

strong message to society and to such criminals,” Nikam said. The three convicts had moved the Bombay High Court challenging the enhanced provision slapped on them, but the court declined to interfere with the sessions court’s decision in the matter. Last month, Jadhav, Bengali, Ansari and their accomplice M. Ashfaque Shaikh (26) were convicted

by the court for the July 31 gang rape of a call centre employee and sentenced to life imprisonment till death. Subsequently, the prosecution sought enhanced charges and punishment against Jadhav, Bengali and Ansari under the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013, for committing the repeat offence. Two minors, one in each case, are being sepa-

rately tried by the Mumbai Juvenile Justice Board and the hearing will start this month. The three men were found guilty and convicted for the gang rape, wrongful restraint, criminal intimidation, conspiracy, common intent, unnatural sex, and sections of the Information Technology Act as the attackers had also made a video clip of the attack.

In an investigation, codenamed Operation Janmabhoomi, Cobrapost claims to establish beyond doubt that the demolition was not an act of frenzied mobs but an act of sabotage planned with so much secrecy that no government agency got wind of it. A journalist with the news portal interviewed 23 of the leaders at the forefront of Ram Janmabhoomi movement, who were involved in the demolition of Babri Masjid, either as conspirators or as executors of the conspiracy that was hatched to bring down the disputed structure. Of these, the Liberhan Commission, formed to look into the demolition of the Babri masjid, has indicted 15. Among those who were interviewed were Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders Uma Bharti, Kalyan Singh and Vinay Katiyar, who talked about the the events in the run up to the demolition. At a press conference in the capital, Cobrapost editor Anirudh Behl screened the recorded interviews in which some low-rung leaders of BJP, VHP and Shiv Sena have claimed that the operation was carried out with precision by their volunteers after going through intensive training and mock drills. The sting claims that Bajrang Dal, the youth wing of VHP, had trained its cadres in Surkhej in Gujarat and the Shiv Sena in Bhind and Morena in Madhya Pradesh. An oath was administered to lakhs of karsevaks (volunteers) in the presence of all the frontline leaders of the movement like L.K. Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Ashok Singhal, Giriraj Kishore and Acharya Dharmendra, it claimed.

Church rattles BJP in Goa

pANAji, April 4 (iANS): The influential Church in Goa has rattled the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party by asking its followers not to vote for the BJP. The Church’s move comes as a shock for the BJP, which was trying desperately to get cosy with Goa’s Christians, who account for 27 percent of the state’s population. Goa elects two members to the Lok Sabha. Official communiqués released by Goa Archbishop and a social group operated by the Church have also driven a wedge between Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza over what Narendra Modi’s prime ministership would mean to India’s minorities. Last month, the Council for Social Justice and Peace (CSJP), a Church-backed NGO, lashed out at Modi for promoting personality oriented politics. It also hinted that communal and corporate forces had “infiltrated” India’s secular spirit. In a public pledge issued to voters, it lashed out at the Parrikar-led government for poor governance, saying it too, like previous governments, was not above corruption and being pro-mining industry. The following day, Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao issued a circular announcing a prayer campaign exhorting Christians to vote for a secular candidate. While both statements did not take names, they dropped enough hints to suggest who the message was for. This has riled BJP politicians and their allies, especially those from the Christian community no

In January 2013, the Supreme Court ordered a re-trial of the Suryanelli rape case (the woman belongs to Suryanelli in the Idukki district of Kerala). Five of the accused died during the trial. The woman and her parents say that their fight for justice has been a long and lonely one. They shifted base to a different district because they say neighbours were hostile. The rape survivor says she leaves home only to go to work. She was kidnapped by a bus conductor on her way to school. end. “Minorities will have an apprehension. It will always be there,” the deputy chief minister said last week, openly blaming the Goa Church for triggering a secularism-versus-communalism debate. Mickky Pacheco, head of the Goa Vikas Party, which supports the BJP-led coalition, and his legislator Caitu Silva came worse off in their spiel against the Church. Caitu accused priests of sucking up to the Congress ahead of the Lok Sabha battle. Pacheco alleged that the Church had sinned by raking up the communalism debate before elections. “The Church has sinned. I am very sure about it,” Pacheco charged this week even as Fr. Maverick Fernandes, a Church spokesperson, publicly asked Pacheco to “revisit his own religion” and stop exposing his “rusty knowledge” about Christianity. Parrikar has dodged and ducked questions about Modi and the possible apprehension that the Gujarat chief minister has triggered in the minority community in Goa. But party spokesperson Pramod Sawant is more candid in his admission. Sawant said there was a false campaign on, which was aimed at branding the BJP communal ahead of April 12, when Goa will vote. “False accusations about communalism are being made. But people will see through it,” Sawant told IANS, adding the party’s six Christian legislators would do the rounds of the electorate to prove that the BJP was in fact a secular entity.

Modi favourite to be PM but India deserves better: Economist

New Delhi, April 4 (iANS): Narendra Modi was favourite to become India’s next prime minister but it would be wrong for a man “who has thrived on division” to become prime minister of a country as fissile as India, The Economist magazine has said. In a lead piece in its April 5 issue, the highly regarded magazine said that though there was much to admire about Modi, the prime ministerial candidate of Bharatiya Janata Party, it cannot bring itself to back him for India’s highest office. The article is also critical of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi over his perceived diffidence but said his government “was a less disturbing option.” The Ecomomist said India was teeming with problems but a decade under a coalition led by Congress had left it rudderless. “Reforms go undone, roads and electricity remain unavailable, children are left uneducated ....The business of politics, Indians conclude, is corruption. No wonder that the overwhelming favourite to become India’s next prime minister is Bharatiya Janata Party’s Narendra Modi,” it said. “ Modi is a former teaseller propelled to the top by sheer ability. Gandhi seems not to know his own mind - even whether he wants power. Modi’s performance as chief minister of Gujarat shows that he is set on economic development and can make it happen. Gandhi’s coalition is tainted by corruption. By comparison Modi is clean. “So there is much to admire. Despite that, this newspaper cannot bring itself to back Modi for India’s highest office. The

reason begins with a Hindu rampage against Muslims in Gujarat in 2002, in which at least 1,000 people were slaughtered... Modi had helped organise a march on the holy site at Ayodhya in 1990 which, two years later, led to the deaths of 2,000 in Hindu-Muslim clashes. “A lifelong member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, a Hindu nationalist group in whose cause he has vowed lifelong celibacy, he (Modi) made speeches early in his career that shamelessly whipped up Hindus against Muslims. In 2002 Modi was chief minister and he was accused of allowing or even abetting the pogrom,” the magazine said. It said that arguments put in defence of Modi were “too generous.” “One reason why the inquiries into the riots

were inconclusive is that a great deal of evidence was lost or wilfully destroyed. And if the facts in 2002 are murky, so are Modi’s views now,” it said. It said Modi could put the “pogrom” behind him by explaining what happened and apologising but he refuses to answer questions about them. “By refusing to put Muslim fears to rest, Mr Modi feeds them. By clinging to the antiMuslim vote, he nurtures it.” “If Modi were to explain his role in the violence and show genuine remorse, we would consider backing him, but he never has; it would be wrong for a man who has thrived on division to become prime minister of a country as fissile as India. We do not find the prospect of a government led by Congress under Gandhi an inspiring one. But we have to recommend it to Indians as the less disturbing option,” the magazine noted. . It said if Congress wins, Gandhi should make “a virtue of his diffidence by stepping back from politics and promoting modernisers to the fore.” “If, more probably, victory goes to the BJP, its coalition partners should hold out for a prime minister other than Modi.” “And if they still choose Modi? We would wish him well, and we would be delighted for him to prove us wrong by governing India in a modern, honest and fair way. But for now he should be judged on his record - which is that of a man who is still associated with sectarian hatred. There is nothing modern, honest or fair about that. India deserves better,” the magazine said.

Desperate hunt for MH370 black box PERTH, APRil 4 (AP): Two ships with sophisticated equipment for searching underwater zeroed in Friday on a remote stretch of the Indian Ocean in a desperate hunt for the missing Malaysia Airlines jet’s black boxes, whose batteries will soon run out. An arduous weekslong hunt has not turned up a single piece of wreckage, which could have led the searchers to the plane and eventually to its black boxes containing key information about the flight. But the searchers have apparently decided to make a direct attempt to find the devices, whose batteries last about a month. Two ships with equipment that can hear the black boxes’ pings were slowly making their way along a 240-kilometer (150-mile) route that investigators are hoping may be close to the spot Flight 370 entered the water after it vanished March 8 on a flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing. But the head of the joint agency coordinating the search acknowledged that the search area was essentially just a best guess — and noted that time was running out for search crews to find the coveted data recorders. “The locater beacon will last about a month before it ceases its transmis-

sions — so we’re now getting pretty close to the time when it might expire,” Angus Houston said. The Australian navy ship Ocean Shield, which is dragging a towed pinger locator from the U.S. Navy, and the British navy’s HMS Echo, which has underwater search gear on board, were looking for the black boxes in an area that investigators’ settled on after analyzing hourly satellite pings the aircraft gave off after it disappeared. That information, combined with data on the estimated speed and performance of the aircraft, led them to that specific stretch of ocean, Houston said. “The area of highest probability as to where the aircraft might have entered the water is the area where the underwater search will commence,” he said. “It’s on the basis of data that only arrived very recently and it’s the best data that is available.” Because the U.S. Navy’s pinger locator can pick up black box signals up to a depth of 6,100 meters (20,000 feet), it should be able to hear the devices even if they are lying in the deepest part of the search zone — about 5,800 meters (19,000 feet) below the surface. But that’s only if the locator gets within range of the black boxes — a tough task, given the size of the

search area and the fact the pinger locator must be dragged slowly through the water at just 1 to 5 knots, or 1 to 6 miles per hour. Finding floating wreckage is key to narrowing the search area, as officials can then use data on ocean currents to try and backtrack to the spot where the Boeing 777 hit the water — and where the black boxes may be. The devices would provide crucial information about what condition the plane was flying under and any communications or sounds in the cockpit. But with no wreckage found despite weeks of searching, officials can’t be confident that they’re looking for the black boxes in the right place, said Geoff Dell, discipline leader of accident investigation at Central Queensland University in Australia. “They might be lucky and they might start smack bang right over the top of it,” Dell said. “But my guess is that on the balance of probabilities, that’s not going to be the case and they’re in for a lengthy search.” The area where crews are looking for the devices lies within a larger 217,000-square-kilometer (84,000-square-mile) search zone that 14 planes and nine ships were crisscrossing Friday in the hopes of spotting debris on the ocean surface. The

and the effect it has had on the ground,” Britain’s U.N. ambassador, Mark Lyall Grant, told reporters. “What we’re trying to do with this resolution is give it the best chance of success and the best chance of protecting civilians in the region.” Darfur has been chaotic since 2003, when rebels took up arms against the government in Khartoum, accusing it of discrimination and neglect. The U.N. has said an increase in violence this year among multiple armed groups has displaced almost 200,000 people.

depiction of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion inaccurate? According to researchers, the Shroud of Turin that shows the impression of a crucified man suggests that he was suspended from a cross in a Y-shape position -- with arms above the head -- and not outstretched horizontally in a ‘T’ shape, as Christ’s crucifixion is popularly depicted. The Shroud of Turin -an important artifact from the medieval world -- is a 14-feet-long linen cloth bearing the image of a man who appears to have suffered physical trauma in a manner consistent with

search zone is about 1,700 kilometers (1,100 miles) — or a 2 1/2-hour flight — northwest of the Australian west coast city of Perth. Several ships also had helicopters on board. The search area has shifted each day, as the investigative team continues to analyze what little radar and satellite data is available while factoring in where any debris may have drifted due to ocean cur-

rents and weather. “I think we’ve probably got to the end of the process of analysis,” Houston said. “And my expectation is that we’re into a situation where the data we’ve got is the data we’ve got and we’ll proceed on the basis of that.” Houston said it was unlikely that any additional pinger locators would join the search any time soon because they are in scarce supply.

was the cloth that disciples wrapped around Jesus Christ immediately after his death. According to Matteo Borrini of Liverpool John Moores University, the Shroud of Turin proves that Jesus Christ may have been crucified with his arms above his head -- a much more painful position. Borrini and Luigi Garlaschelli of University of Pavia, Italy, arrived at this conclusion after analysing the pattern of blood stains on the Shroud of Turin and simulating blood trickling down the arms. They looked for what crucifixion position would

shroud pictured Jesus with his arms above his head in a ‘Y’ position. This would have been a very painful position and one which would have created difficulty breathing,” Borrini was quoted as saying in the journal ‘New Scientist’. For centuries, the Church has depicted the crucifixion of Christ with his arms outstretched horizontally on a cross. While many believe the Shroud of Turin was the cloth wrapped around Christ after his death, there are others who think of it as a relic of a different sort -- a piece of medieval forgery, the report added.

US optimism ebbs over Myanmar reforms

WASHiNGTON, APRil 4 (AP): Two years after the United States announced the normalization of diplomatic relations with Myanmar, optimism in Washington over the nation’s embrace of democracy is waning and concern over the plight of minority Muslims is growing. What has been viewed as a foreign policy success story for the Obama administration, supported by both Democrats and Republicans, faces a rocky road ahead as the pace of political reform slows and U.S. congressional criticism intensifies. Lawmakers are frustrating the administration’s efforts to engage the nation’s powerful military, and antipathy will likely increase if opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, long revered in Washington, is unable to run for the presidency next year and complete a Mandela-like transformation from former political prisoner to head of state. Suu Kyi is ineligible to be president because she was married to foreigner. While the United States says it remains hopeful the constitution can be amended so Suu Kyi can run, congressional aides say U.S. officials are pessimistic about that happening before the national elections at the end of 2015. Constitutional reforms would also be required to dilute the political power

of the military and meet ethnic minority demands for autonomy. U.S. officials tell The Associated Press that constitutional reform is an evolving process and the boldest changes may not happen before the election, a key staging post in Myanmar’s transition from five decades of repressive army rule. But the most pressing concern for the U.S., and the one on which the Obama administration and lawmakers have been most outspoken, is com-

munal violence between majority Buddhists and Muslims, and the rising tide of Buddhist nationalism that many expect will intensify in the run-up to the election. The House Foreign Affairs Committee called last week for an end to persecution of stateless Rohingya Muslims in one of the strongest congressional criticisms yet of Myanmar’s reformist government. The committee’s Republican chairman, Ed Royce, questioned whether the U.S. should embrace diplomatic reconciliation

with Myanmar while human rights deteriorate. The country also known as Burma regards Rohingya as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, although many have lived in Myanmar for generations. Some 140,000 Rohingya displaced by the violence since mid-2012 live in overcrowded, dirty camps that segregate them from Buddhists. Tens of thousands of Rohingya have fled the country by boat. A month ago Myanmar suspended the operations of Doctors Without Bor-

ders, the main health care provider in the strife-hit state of Rakhine. Other relief agencies fled this week because of attacks by Buddhist mobs that the U.N. said threatened the entire humanitarian response in the state. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf on Wednesday voiced deep concern about the “humanitarian crisis” there. “Currently, large segments of the population do not have access to adequate medical services, water, sanitation, and food. The government has so far failed to provide adequate security and the travel authorizations necessary for the humanitarian aid workers to resume their life-saving services,” she said. That strong statement came almost two years to the day that then-Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton announced the U.S. was appointing its first full ambassador to Myanmar in two decades, ending a policy of diplomatic isolation. That rewarded the fair conduct of special elections in which Suu Kyi won a parliamentary seat. By November 2012, the U.S. had suspended most of its restrictions on aid, trade and investment, and Barack Obama became the first U.S. president to visit Myanmar — hugging Suu Kyi outside the lakeside villa where she was once imprisoned.

Although Australia is coordinating the ocean search, the investigation into the plane’s disappearance ultimately remains Malaysia’s responsibility, though Australia, the U.S., Britain and China have all agreed to be “accredited representatives” of the investigation, Houston said. Four Australian investigators were in Kuala Lumpur to help with the investigation and ensure

that information on the aircraft’s likely flight path is fed back to search crews, he said. The two countries are still working out who will be in charge of the analysis of any wreckage and flight recorders that may be found. Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott met with staff Friday at the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, which is running the search efforts, and acknowledged that officials

have no idea how long the hunt would continue. “It is probably the most difficult search that’s ever been mounted,” Abbott told staffers. “A large aircraft seems like something that would be easy enough to locate — but a large aircraft that all but disappeared, and disappeared into inaccessible oceans, is an extraordinary, extraordinary challenge that you’re faced with.”

Human saliva to run tiny power generators! NEW YORk, APRil 4 (iANS): Soon, you can check your sugar levels or ovulation changes with bacteria-generated fuel technology powered by your spit! According to an international team of engineers, saliva-powered, microsized microbial fuel cells can produce minute amounts of energy sufficient to run on-chip applications. Microbial fuel cells create energy when bacteria break down organic material producing a charge that is transferred to the anode. “There is a lot of organic stuff in saliva,” said Bruce E. Logan, a professor of environmental engineering at Pennsylvania State University. “By producing nearly 1 microwatt in power, this salivapowered microbial fuel already generates enough power to be directly used as an energy harvester in microelectronic applications," fellow researcher Justine E. Mink added. The researchers believe that the emergence of ultra-low-power chiplevel biomedical electronics, devices able to operate at sub-microwatt power outputs, is becoming a reality. One pos-

sible application would be a tiny ovulation predictor based on the conductivity of a woman's saliva, which changes five days before ovulation. “The device would measure the conductivity of the saliva and then use the saliva for power to send the reading to a nearby cell phone,” Mink explained. Biomedical devices using microbial fuel cells would be portable and have their energy source available anywhere. However, saliva does not have the type of bacteria necessary for the fuel cells and manufacturers would need to inoculate the devices with bacteria from the natural environment, the researchers added. The anode is composed of carbon nanomaterial graphene. Other microbial fuel cells used graphene oxide, but the researchers showed that pure multi-layered graphene can serve as a suitable anode material. While the researchers tested this mini microbial fuel cell using acetate and human saliva, it can use any liquid with sufficient organic material, said the study reported in the journal Nature Publishing Group's Asia Materials.

Israel seeks review of talks

Scraps planned release of Palestinian prisoners

JERUSAlEM, APRil 4 (REUTERS): Israel has called off a planned release of Palestinian prisoners meant to advance the U.S.-sponsored peace process and called for a review of how the troubled negotiations can make progress, an official briefed on the talks said on Thursday. The official, who declined to be identified, said Israeli negotiators had informed their Palestinian counterparts of the decision in a Wednesday night meeting held at Washington’s behest in an effort to avert a collapse of the talks. The crisis surfaced at the weekend when Israel refused to release a group of Palestinian prisoners under the terms of a previous accord unless it received assurances the Palestinian leadership would continue with negotiations beyond an initial end-April deadline set by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. Kerry flew to Jerusalem on Monday and was trying to put the talks back on track. But his mission was jeopardised when Palestinians signed 15 international conventions, mainly through the United Nations, that could give them greater leverage against Israel. “As the agreements on the release of prisoners were subject to upholding the Palestinian commitment not to go to the U.N., new conditions have been created and Israel will not be able to free the prisoners,” Israeli negotiator Tzipi Livni told the Palestinians, according to the official briefed on the talks. The official further quoted Livni as saying: “The sides should now review

how it is possible to make progress in the negotiations.” She urged the Palestinians to withdraw from the new conventions they had signed.

‘UNHELPFUL ACTIONS’ Joining the court could eventually allow Palestinians to lodge formal legal cases against Israel, and is seen by the United States and Israel as the most dangerous step they could take. Signing the conventions was “the correct response to the Israeli game of not releasing the fourth group of prisoners on time...Israel is the one who began this and took the unilateral decision. Today, it announced its decision formally,” Qaraqe said. The United States has criticised “unhel pful, unilateral actions” by both sides and Kerry sought on Thursday to cast the crisis in a more hopeful light, telling reporters while visiting Algeria that the Israeli-Palestinian dialogue “remains open”. During the negotiators’ meeting “there was progress made in narrowing some of the questions that have arisen as a result of the last few days but there is still a gap and that gap will have to be closed and closed fairly soon,” Kerry said. In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf declined to explain the nature of the progress that Kerry cited and acknowledged that the talks were at “a very critical point.” Aimed at creating a Palestinian state and ending a decadeslong conflict, the negotiations have also stalled over Palestinian opposition to Israel’s demand that it be recognised as a Jewish state, and the issue of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Thunder end Spurs 19-game win streak

OKlAHOMA CItY, ApRIl 4 (Ap): Kevin Durant's rare streak of games with least 25 points continued, and San Antonio's run of 19 straight wins came to a halt. Another streak might mean more than both of them — Oklahoma City's season sweep. Durant scored 28 points and Russell Westbrook scored 27 to help the Thunder defeat San Antonio 106-94 on Thursday night in a showdown of the top two teams in the Western Conference. Oklahoma City won all four games against the Spurs this season, and this was the most lopsided result. "That's a big thing," Westbrook said. "When you have a team that's a good basketball team — they're the No. 1 team in the West, and we want to be the best team, you've got to beat the best. I think we did a great job of that tonight." Serge Ibaka added 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Thunder, who trail San Antonio by three games with eight remaining. Durant scored at least 25 points for the 39th con-

secutive game, the longest streak since Michael Jordan did it 40 consecutive times during the 1986-87 season. He reached 25 on a free throw with 3:31 remaining, drawing a roar from the crowd. "That was a cool feeling," Durant said. "I don't want to take those moments for granted. It's not what I'm really playing the game for, but it is still cool to see that support from such great fans, no matter what." Durant can match Jordan's mark, the longest such streak in the past 50 years, Friday in Houston. "That's a lot of games to be scoring 25 points in a row," Westbrook said. "You can't just not think about that. That's an unbelievable stat. I think he may just finish the season doing that. He does that in his sleep." The Thunder shot 59 percent in the second half to pull away. Oklahoma City scored 30 points off San Antonio's 19 turnovers. "Too many turnovers led to too many points, and that's the ballgame," San Antonio guard Danny Green said. "If

we changed that, it's probably a totally different game." Patty Mills scored 21 points and Kawhi Leonard and Tim Duncan each added 17 for the Spurs, who hadn't lost since Feb. 21. "We never thought about the streak in the first place," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "To us, it is just another game." Spurs reserve Manu Ginobili did not play. The veteran guard was not listed on the injury report, and Popovich did not explain why Ginobili was out. Oklahoma City trailed 51-43 in the second quarter before Westbrook drained a 3-pointer, then made a layup with 2.6 seconds left in the first half to cut the deficit to 51-48 at halftime. Westbrook had struggled with his shot before that flurry. "You may miss a few shots here and there, but you've got to keep your mind in the game and stay in the moment," Westbrook said. The Thunder continued their surge in the second half. Rookie Andre Roberson hit a 3-pointer gave the Thunder a 57-56 lead. A lob

from Reggie Jackson to Durant for a dunk gave Oklahoma City a 75-65 lead. Durant hit a running jumper in the closing seconds of the third quarter to put the Thunder up 80-71. He scored 12 points on 6-for-9 shooting in the period. Oklahoma City pushed its lead to 16, but San Antonio went on an 8-0 run to pull to 91-83. The Thunder regained control. Westbrook got into the open court, clutched and threw down a reverse dunk to bump Oklahoma City's lead back up to 95-83 with 5:25 to play. "We just made the second and third efforts," Durant said. "We did a good job of helping each other on the defensive end, and once you do that, you give yourself a good chance." The Spurs said they will study the game and move forward. "You can learn a lot from a loss," Green said. "Obviously, I'd rather learn from a win, but sometimes, you feel like you can learn more from a loss. We'll go back to the drawing board tonight."

Seven English league players arrested for match-fixing lONdON, ApRIl 4 (IANS): Another seven players from league clubs in northwest England have been arrested for allegedly fixing football matches. The BBC cited the National Crime Agency as saying that the seven footballers are aged between 18 and 30. It added that six other men originally arrested in December on suspicion of involvement in match-fixing, then later bailed, have been re-arrested, reports Xinhua. The NCA Thursday night said: "The investigation began following receipt of material from the Sun Sunday. It remains ongoing and we cannot provide further detail at this stage." Juventus, Basel grab wins in Europa League GeNeVA, ApRIl 4 (Ap): Juventus scored late to beat Lyon 1-0 and take a big stride toward the Europa League semifinals while Benfica and FC Basel also won to move within sight of a second straight appearance in the last four on Thursday. Leonardo Bonucci poked home Juventus' 85th-minute winner in its quarterfinal first leg at Stade Gerland, keeping the Italian league leaders and competition favorites on course to reach the final in their own stadium on May 14. "It's a pity," said Lyon midfielder Maxime Gonalons, whose team was hanging on in the second half, "we almost had a perfect game." Benfica, beaten by Chelsea in last season's final, could be back in the showpiece match next month after Eduardo Salvio's 48th-minute goal sealed a 1-0 win at AZ Alkmaar. Matias Delgado scored twice in five minutes late in the first half and Valentin Stocker added a third goal in second-half stoppage in Basel's 3-0 win over Valencia that was played in an empty stadium at St. Jakob Park. UEFA ordered the first leg to be played without fans as punishment after Basel supporters temporarily stopped play during its 2-1 win at Salzburg two weeks for throwing fireworks on the pitch. Porto beat Sevilla 1-0 at home thanks to Eliaquim Mangala's flying header from Ricardo Quaresma's superbly delivered cross in the 31st minute. Steven Defour and Quaresma struck efforts against the post for Porto, which finished with 10 men after midfielder Fernando was given two yellow cards in a matter of seconds in the 87th minute for firstly pulling an opponent's shirt and

then kicking the ball away. With Porto striker Jackson MartĂnez also missing the second leg because of suspension, two-time winner Sevilla is far from out of the home-and-away series. All the second legs will be played next Thursday. An ultimately successful night for Juventus was soured by the sight of Carlos Tevez leaving the pitch in the 55th minute with what appeared to be a groin strain.

Arsene Wenger backs Barcelona transfer ban

lONdON, ApRIl 4 (AFp): Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said on Friday that he supports FIFA's decision to hand Barcelona a year-long transfer ban for breaching rules on signing under-age players. The Spanish champions were sanctioned on Wednesday by FIFA's disciplinary committee for breaking regulations in the cases of 10 players aged under 18 who were signed between 2009 and 2013. They were banned from signing play-

ers in either of the next two transfer windows and fined 450,000 Swiss francs, (369,000 euros, $509,000), although the club say they will appeal to FIFA and, if necessary, to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. "Certainly they have not respected the rules," said Wenger, who believes the whole system needs reviewing for the good of the game. Under FIFA's rules, a player under the age of 18 can only be transferred if the player's parents have

moved country; the move takes place within the European Union if a player is aged between 16 and 18; or the player's home is less than 50 kilometres (31 miles) from the national border being crossed. "The rule is quite simple, you cannot move the players before the age of 16 unless their parents move for professional reasons, so that of course creates a bit of a debate - do the parents move for professional reasons or not? "In this case,

FIFA has judged the parents moved for football reasons and that is why they were banned because they have not respected the rules." Wenger added: "I think the rules need to be changed, because there is more competition now to get the young players, and you will always be in a debate as to why did the parents move? "There is more money in the game, so the parents will be tempted to give their young boys a chance to have a great career.

Lewis Hamilton defends new Ferrari leads push for F1 rule changes look F1 from Ferrari critics

MANAMA, ApRIl 4 (ReuteRS): Lewis Hamilton defended Formula One against accusations of being boring on Thursday, suggesting that those raising their voices now Mercedes were on top had kept quiet when their teams were winning everything. Mercedes have won the first two races of the newlook V6 turbo era with Nico Rosberg and Hamilton looking dominant while champions Red Bull and glamour team Ferrari are having to play catch-up. Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has been a prominent critic of the 2014 technical changes, with quieter cars and an emphasis on fuel-saving, that he says have taken away the excitement and turned F1 racers into taxi drivers. Montezemolo is expected to attend this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix and discuss the situation with commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone, who has also been critical of the new engine sound, and the head of the sport's governing FIA Jean Todt. Hamilton, the 2008 world champion with McLaren, would not be drawn on the politics of the sport but clearly disagreed with the Ferrari boss. "Di Montezemolo didn't say a thing when Michael (Schumacher) won those five world championships (in a row)," smiled the winner of last weekend's race in Malaysia who will be chasing a third successive pole position on Saturday. "It's the same when McLaren won all their championships that they didn't say anything, and the same with Red Bull when

they won, they weren't saying anything," he continued. "Someone else gets in the lead and they'll say something. It's the nature of the game." FERRARI SURVEY Mercedes are favourites to win on Sunday at the Sakhir circuit, with other Mercedes-powered teams also benefitting from a power unit that has been performing better than those made by Ferrari and Renault. Ferrari have yet to get one of their drivers on the podium this year, with Fernando Alonso fourth in Australia and Malaysia. The Italian team published on Thursday the results of a survey conducted through their website (www.ferrari.com) with 50,000 fans responding, mainly from Italy, Britain, France and Australia. Unsurprisingly, it found that 83 percent "were disappointed with the new format, dismissing it mainly because of the drivers being forced to lift off (the throttle) to save fuel. "In addition, the fans

don't like the noise from the new engines and are confused by rules that are too complicated," Ferrari said, adding that the 'no' vote increased substantially after Mercedes' one-two in Malaysia. Hamilton suggested fans should be more patient, while accepting that other series such as go-karting, GP2 and MotoGP might have more thrills for those seeking out-and-out excitement. "Go-karts are the best races to watch because you get to see such natural talent because everyone has the same car and similar engines and you get to watch a train go round, with overtaking from corner to corner," he said. "Formula One is different. It has different technology, is a different competition... we're in a period of time when technology is everything, and the fact Mercedes have developed better technology than everyone, have generally done a better job this year... "Red Bull have had the best car overall but now it may change this year. That's a positive... it needs some time before you judge this season."

SAKHIR, ApRIl 4 (Ap): Ferrari is ramping up the pressure on Formula One authorities to change the sport's rules, saying a company survey shows most fans are unhappy with the new direction of the sport. Ferrari released the findings Thursday, ahead of this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix, where its cars are expected to again be off the pace shown by front-running Mercedes. The release of the survey follows a meeting between Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo and F1's commercial powerbroker, Bernie Ecclestone. They are expected to meet with FIA president Jean Todt in Bahrain this weekend to press for changes. Ferrari said it received more than 50,000 replies to its online survey, and said 83 percent of respondents said they were unhappy with the new rules, "mainly because of the drivers being forced to

lift off to save fuel." "In addition, the fans don't like the noise from the new engines and are confused by rules that are too complicated," Ferrari said. The major changes to the sport's rules this year are the introduction of 1.6-liter V6 turbocharged engines with associated use of battery-stored power harvested from the kinetic energy generated by braking and the heat energy of exhaust. There is also a limit of 100 kilograms of fuel per car, with usage capped at a rate of 100 kilograms per hour. With races generally lasting between 90 minutes and two hours, much of the car's power must therefore come from the stored power. While it may prove too difficult to agree on changing those rules this season, a possible way around it could be getting an agreement to cut race distances, meaning more

power could come from the standard combustion engine and less from the battery power, freeing drivers to push harder and attempt more overtaking moves. Ecclestone had always been against the engine changes, and has received backing from those unhappy at the muted sound of the cars, and the pattern of racing in which cars circulate in formation for long periods of the race as a way of preserving fuel. Chief among the teams urging change to the rules are Ferrari, which has struggled in the first two races of 2014, and Red Bull, which has already fallen foul of the new fuel regulations. Daniel Ricciardo was stripped of his second-place finish in Australia because the team exceeded fuel-flow rates. Lewis Hamilton, who took pole in Australia and won in Malaysia for Mercedes, said opposition

to the new rules was being driven less by the interests of the sport and more by rivals trying to find ways to pull Mercedes back to the field. "Di Montezemolo didn't say a thing when Michael (Schumacher) won those five world championships," Hamilton said. "It's the same when McLaren won all their championships that they didn't say anything, and the same with Red Bull when they won, they weren't saying anything." Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso was disappointed that the new rules had made the cars up to 10 seconds slower per lap than in the past, but was also against any hasty changes. "There will be some exciting races and some boring ones," Alonso said. "If you allow some more fuel in the cars that are fast, they will be even faster. And the cars that are slow will be a little bit less slow."

Saina, Kashyap crash out of India Open NeW delHI, ApRIl 4 (IANS): The Indian campaign came to an end as local hopes Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap lost their respective quarterfinal matches at the $250,000 India Open Super Series on Friday. Former World Champion Yihan Wang of China continued her dominance over Saina, making her way into the women's singles semifinal while Malaysian top seed Lee Chong Wei gave no chance to Kashyap, winning 21-15, 21-13 in 40 minutes to advance to the men's singles semifinal. Kashyap played well to win 28 of the 70 points in the encounter but he was no match for his legendary opponent. The Indian used his jump smashes to good effect but the World No.1 was

in a class of his own to take a 4-0 lead in career meetings. The Malaysian has been so dominant over Kashyap that the top Indian has never even won a single game against him. Earlier, though

Saina fought well, she was no match for the World No.2 and lost the quarterfinal 1621, 14-21 in 39 minutes. With the victory, the third seeded Yihan took an 8-1 lead in career meetings

over the Indian. The one win Saina had over the Chinese last year in Denmark was when Yihan retired with an injury. Saina, seeded eighth, struck first blood but immediately made an

error with an unsuccessful drop shot. It was neck-andneck at the start with Yihan having no answers for Saina's piercing smashes. But, on the other hand, the Indian could hardly match Yihan's deception. The Olympic silver medallist slowly started opening up a gap which she kept throughout the game. Despite Saina dominating the rallies, Yihan came out with acts of brilliance to make sure she took the point when it mattered most. Down 12-18, Saina found legs to claw back to 16-19 before Yihan clinched the game with two straight points. Saina once again won the first point of the second game to get on the board but followed it up with an error. T

Tikzik- The new Naga Bamboo Percussion C M Y K

renla Subong of Abiogenesis today stated that a new Naga bamboo percussion has been born out of circumstances. When NET V approached Abiogenesis to feature in their Fevikwik Just Music and told that the shooting would be outdoors in a natural surrounding and that music should be played unplugged, the band realised that the drum had to be left out, as it is too loud. The

other acoustic instruments would be drowned, Arenla said. “Therefore, while the band was wondering what the drummer should do or play, Moa got a brilliant stroke and came up with the novel innovation of the bamboo percussion naming it Tikzik,” Arenla said. She explains that the Tikzik is a new Naga Bamboo percussion instrument that sounds and played by holding with one hand, struck

onto the finger or balm of the other hand while the fingers can also simultaneously tap single note or beat repeatedly like a roll onto the Tikzik stick while the shake sound is also heard. Naga Tikzik can be classified as un-pitched per-

cussion instrument, which produces notes without an identifiable pitch. The Tikzik will be unveiled at Mokokchung during Moatsu festival.

Virat Kholi drives India to T20 final

DHAKA, APRIL 4 (AGENCIES): Former champions India upstaged South Africa by six wickets in the second semi-final in Dhaka on Friday to cruise into the final of ICC World Twenty20. Chasing 173 to win, India were led by a swashbuckling knock of 72 not out by Virat Kohli as they strolled to the target with five balls to spare. This becomes India's second final in five World Twenty20s after they won the inaugural event held in South Africa in 2007. They meet Sri Lanka in the final in Dhaka on Sunday In contrast, South Africa, regarded as perennial chokers in crucial matches, yet again failed to reach any world level final since their readmission into cricket in 1991. Kohli smashed five boundaries and two sixes off 44 balls in a brilliant display of batting, highlighting India's strength at chasing a target. He hit paceman Dale Steyn for a boundary to seal the win much to the jubiliation of a packed Shere Bangla stadium. Kohli and other Indian batsmen blunted South Africa's best bowlers, legspinner Imran Tahir -joint highest wicket-taker so far in the tournament with 12 -- and paceman Steyn with authority. Tahir managed just one wicket for 30 runs in his four overs while Steyn went for 36 in 3.1 overs. Kohli brought up his seventh T20 fifty with a huge six off Tahir and despite the loss off Yuvraj Singh (18) and Suresh Raina (21) kept the runchase smooth. Rohit

Sharma made a 13-ball 24 with a six and four boundaries and Ajinkya Rahane scored 32 off 30 balls. South Africa, who batted after winning the toss were helped to 172-4 with skipper Faf du Plessis scoring a 41-ball 58 for his fifth Twenty20 fifty. He added 71 for the third wicket with Jean-Paul Duminy who made an unbeaten 40-ball 45 to bolster the innings. Du Plessis, who missed South Africa's last game against England because of a slow over-rate suspension, hit five boundaries and two towering sixes as the duo negotiated an Indian spin quartet with aggressive batting. South Africa lost opener Quinton de Kock (six) in the first over before Hashim Amla and Du Plessis took the score to 44 in the fifth over. But Ravichandran Ashwin, who took 3-22 in his four overs, put the brakes on South Africa's progress, claiming Amla (22) and then dangerman AB de Villiers (ten) off a miscued pull shot which was smartly held by Rohit Sharma at long leg. In between du Plessis and Duminy batted with guts to take South Africa to 115 before Ashwin bowled du Plessis off a miscued sweep. Duminy, who hit three sixes and a four, added another 43 for the unbroken fifth wicket with Andrew Miller (23 not out) to help South Africa add 106 in the last ten overs. Leg-spinner Amit Mishra, India's most successful bowler in the Super-10 stage, went for 36 runs in his three overs without taking a wicket.
