that took the top prize. Steve McQueen's visceral, violent story of a free black man kidnapped into servitude in the 19th-century U.S. South was named best picture. Its star, Chiwetel Ejiofor, took the male acting trophy. Ejiofor thanked McQueen, a visual artist who turned to filmmaking with "Hunger" and "Shame," for bringing the story to the screen. Holding the trophy, the British actor told McQueen: "This is yours. I'm going to keep it — that's the kind of guy I am — but it's yours." McQueen reminded the ceremony's black-tie audience that, in some parts of the world, slavery is not a thing of the past. "There are 21 million people in slavery as we sit here," he said. "I just hope 150 years from Britain's Duke of Cambridge meets the crowd as he arrives for the EE British Academy now our ambivalence will Film Awards 2014, at the Royal Opera House, in London Sunday. It was a good night for lost-in-space thriller "Gravity," which won six prizes,

despite its mixed parentage — made in Britain by a Mexican director and starring American actors —it was named best British film. Cuaron paid tribute to star Sandra Bullock, who is alone onscreen for much of the film. "Without her performance, everything would have been nonsense," he said. Con-artist caper "American Hustle" charmed its way to three prizes, including original screenplay and supporting actress for Jennifer Lawrence. Its spectacular 70s stylings took the hair and makeup award. The best-actress prize went to Cate Blanchett for her turn as a socialite on the slide in "Blue Jasmine." She dedicated the award to her friend and fellow actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died this month, calling him "a monumental presence who is now sadly an absence." "Phil, buddy, this is for you, you bastard. I hope you're proud," Blanchett said. The supporting actor prize went to Barkhad Abdi, who made an explosive screen debut as a So-

with an Oscar nomination — "surreal." In the past few years, the British prizes, known as BAFTAs, have helped underdog films, including "Slumdog Millionaire," ''The King's Speech" and "The Artist," gain Oscars momentum. The prize for adapted screenplay went to "Philomena," based on the true story of an Irish woman's decades-long search for the son she was forced to give up for adoption. The awards have become an essential stop for many Hollywood stars before the Academy Awards, held this year on March 2. The temperature in London was hardly Hollywood, but Britain's fickle weather relented ahead of Sunday's ceremony. The sun shone as nominees including "Wolf of Wall Street" star Leonardo DiCaprio and "12 Years a Slave" performer Lupita Nyong'o— striking in a green Dior gown — walked the red carpet outside London's Royal Opera House. Best-actress nominee Amy Adams wore a black dress by Victoria Beckham,

and revealed the inspirations for her "American Hustle" character's faux-British accent: "Marianne Faithfull and Julie Christie." There was royalty of the Hollywood kind — Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, wearing matching tuxedos. And there was British royalty, too, in the form of Prince William, honorary president of the film academy. The documentary prize went to Joshua Oppenheimer's "The Act of Killing," a powerful look at hundreds of thousands of killings carried out in 1960s Indonesia in the name of fighting communism. Will Poulter ("Son of Rambow," ''We're the Millers"), a 21-year-old actor, won the rising star award, decided by public vote. Director Peter Greenaway received an award for outstanding contribution to British cinema for a body of unsettling, comic and erotic films that includes "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover" and "The Draughtsman's Con-

tract." Greenaway said he hoped the trophy would encourage those, like him, "who believe that cinema has to be continually reinvented." Helen Mirren received the British Academy Fellowship in recognition of a career that has ranged from a hard-nosed detective in TV series "Prime Suspect" to Queen Elizabeth II in "The Queen." Mirren, 68, said she was "almost speechless" at receiving the honor, whose previous recipients include Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock, Elizabeth Taylor and Judi Dench. "It's been an amazing journey up to now," she said. She was given the trophy by Prince William — who said he should probably call her "granny." Mirren won an Oscar for playing his grandmother, Britain's monarch, in "The Queen." "I wanted to have a hanky in my bag and take it out and spit on it and clean his face," Mirren joked.

fter months of speculation, it appears as though Liz Hurley and Shane Warne are back together after they were pictured in London on Saturday. The couple haven't been seen together since November last year, shortly before it was reported that they had gone their separate ways. After hinting at a reunion last week during a radio interview, the former cricketer was seen unloading a number of suitcases alongside the actress at her home in the west of the city. Sporting a smart navy jacket, the 44-year-old beamed at photographers after opting for jeans, a grey jumper and dark sunglasses. His former fiance also looked chic in dark skinny jeans and a blue wool coat, as she carried her designer luggage into her house. The 48-year-old showed off her trim figure in her off-duty outfit as she draped her tan Birkin handbag over her arm. The mother-of-one, who accepted Shane's marriage proposal in September 2011, finished off her ensemble with black ankle boots, a brown jumper and large sunglasses. A spokesman for both Liz and Shane has been contacted following their photo together. The previous day she had been spotted out food shopping with her son Damian after picking him up from school. Wearing the same wool coat and boots, Liz added an injection of colour to her casual ensemble thanks to a bright purple scarf. Speaking on KIIS 106.5 to breakfast hosts Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O, Shane said: 'I’m just sitting on the fence on that one,' when he was pushed him about his 'on again, off again' status with Hurley. 'But we’ll see how things unfold over the next few months… I’ll inform you soon.' Despite his ambiguous response onair, Shane took to Twitter after the chat to set the record straight. 'FTR I did not split up with EH because of my ex wife, secret phone or that I didn't set a wedding date!' he said. 'ALSO FTR & I know it's nobody's business, I'm not in a relationship, smitten by anyone or seeing anyone, all absolute rubbish & made up lies.'

e became a proud father for the first time when he welcomed baby son Eric into the world on Valentine's Day. And doting dad Simon Cowell has now shared a touching first photograph of he and Lauren Silverman's little bundle of joy. Posting a series of artistic black and white shots on his Twitter page on Sunday evening, the 54-year-old music mogul revealed he was unprepared for how much 'love and pride' he would feel towards his 'handsome' baby son. One adorable snap showed him and Lauren gazing adoringly at the new addition to their family, with the American socialite tenderly stroking little Eric's head as Simon cradled the tot in his arms. Alongside the photograph, he wrote: 'Mum, Dad and Eric. Now two days old.' Another shot showed the X Factor supremo affectionately patting his son's forehead as Eric clasped onto his thumb with a firm grip alongside the text: '…. now you can see how very handsome little Eric is.' A final photograph showed Simon looking every inch the proud father as his newborn son nestled into his chest with his eyes closed. He wrote: 'I never knew how much love and pride I would feel.' Lauren gave birth to their healthy baby boy on Friday. And after what must have been some much needed rest, Simon arrived back at the hospital in New York City on Saturday, to see his brand new son Eric experience his second day out in the world. and new father was every bit the proud, radiant parent as he gave onlookers the thumbs up on his way in to see his two loves. Simon shielded himself from the cold with a heavy trench coat and warm grey scarf as he trudged across the snow-laden road. He carried a mysterious red carry bag, perhaps containing some surprise goodies for the mother of his firstborn. and throw up a peace sign for good measure. Lauren would obviously have been staying at the hospital with her second son - she has an eight-year old called Adam with ex-husband Andrew SIlverman - who was born at at 17.45 EST on Friday, Valentine's Day, weighing 6lbs 7oz. A source told MailOnline: 'Lauren's mother and sister were in the delivery room with them when she gave birth. Simon's mother, Julie, is looking forward to meeting the baby in the UK.' Cowell tweeted just hours later, giving away the infant's name: 'Very happy to say Eric was born at 17.45pm. Healthy and handsome.' He later added an explanatory note: 'Named after my dad'. Close friend and ex girl-

friend Terri Seymour said: 'I called him tonight and he is so excited. It really is all change for him, but he is ready. Eric is a great name. It is great that he picked that name in honour of his father. It is very touching. I can't wait to see them all.' Mario Lopez threw in his two cents too, saying: #Congrats to my boy @SimonCowell & his Valentine's Day baby!!! Smooth move... Only you could pull that off Sir.' Music icon Tom Jones took time out from his performance in aid of the red carpet at the Mending Kids International All Star Concert for Children Worldwide In Los Angeles. Tom revealed to MailOnline, that Simon will be able to mix his workaholic nature with being a father: 'So good luck to him and his partner and his new child. I think having a child is a responsibility. 'I had a child when I was 17 years old and you can do both, The Voice UK judge explained. 'You can have a family and still enjoy being in showbusiness. Asked if Cowell's time being taken up with child-rearing could impact on the TV battle between the X Factor and his BBC rival, Tom smiled: 'I don't know about that. Simon Cowell is a lovely fella. I have met him and he is a solid man.' Nigel Lythgoe told us exclusively: 'I look forward to working with Simon again on a brand new production, "My Kid's Got Talent.'
