Head coach Tony Thielke enters his second year at the helm of the Hancock High School girls basketball program. He looks for continued success after the Owls finished 13-11 overall last season. “Have fun, be competitive and improve throughout the season,” Thielke said of the program’s goals for the 2018-2019 season. The Owls return senior Haley Mattson and sophomore Lexi Staples as the lone starters from a year ago. Staples is the top returner in almost every statistical category as she tallied 202 points, 114 rebounds, 47 assists, and 44 steals last season. Mattson scored roughly seven points per game and will be a senior leader this season, Thielke said. Several others will need to step up to fill bigger roles, including Carlee Hanson and Tori Pahl, Thielke said. “Morgan Kisgen and Rylee Hanson both logged significant minutes last season,” Thielke said of two. The two players will be expected to play bigger roles for the Owls this year. The Owls began the 20182019 season at Hillcrest Thursday, Nov. 29, in Fergus Falls. They next play at Dawson-Boyd Tuesday, Dec. 11 before opening the home season against West Central Area at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 17, in Hancock.
