new release The Mask of Deceit

Author: Hettie Ashwin Hettie lives on a yacht in tropical Cairns with her husband. She has been widely published in America, United Kingdom and Australia in magazines and online. Her non-fiction writing encompasses the boating scene and she has been widely published in boating magazines. Several of these articles allude to the humorous side of boating. The Coastal Passage a boating newspaper with a world -wide distribution has published her humorous articles about boating and reprinted a short story from her recently published collection. She was published in a column in The Australian Review magazine recently. REVIEW OF THE MASK OF DECEIT: By Cecilia Jansink. This only landed in my review pile less than 24 hours ago and from the very start the concept had me intrigued. I didn't so much read this as devour it. Ashwin has taken our present reality and twisted it into a future that is both horrifying and transfixing. A superb mix of corruption, mind blowing science, love and fear; The Mask of Deceit will leave you puzzling over the fact that this could very well become reality, and leave you with questions long after the last page is turned. Anton is a strong lead who will soon have you feeling as though his footsteps and battles are indeed your own and will immerse you fully in his plight. The many layers of corruption and conditioning will leave the reader wondering just what "truths" are indeed real. The descriptive scenes are visually stunning to the point you can almost feel and smell the sanitiser on your own skin. The writing style is fresh and fast paced and

Ashwin has truly nailed all that is delightful about Spec-Fic with her own unique twist. In fact, the authors own comments in the press release sum this novel up beautifully. When asked her motivation for the novel, Ashwin replied, "I set out to write a quest book with a modern theme. At the time, there was a lot of political talk about GM food and superbugs so I used these in a speculative fiction context. I wrote about the science that is happening in the 21st century and what it would be like if it went awry." Quite frankly, in my opinion, she has nailed it. This is a novel that should be on everyone's TBR list. Cecilia Jansink http://celsconfessionsofabookymonster.blogspot.com.au/201 2/08/the-mask-of-deceit-hettie-ashwin.html SYNOPSIS: The conviction of the deceit gives the wearer a coat of honesty, masking the bitterness of the lie. Imagine a world after carbon trading, after conglomerate GM food production, after the global warming crisis. This is Anton's world. When his partner BulokÊ disappears, Anton sets out in search of her. Leaving the city and the only life he has ever known, Anton embarks on a journey to a place that to him is only legend. Fighting for his life against a controlling government, hoards of rapacious arthropods, and the freezing cold, Anton discovers a whole new world. A world he didn't believe existed. What he learns in this wondrous place will change his life forever and set him on a quest to fight for truth against a government rife with corruption and deceit. This novel was highly commended for a Varuna Writer’s scholarship in 2007. TITLE: The Mask of Deceit. new release Opal Dreaming - The Bronze Horses

Author: Jennifer Crane Jennifer Crane lives on the Sunshine Coast with her daughters. This is her second published book. I started writing when I became a full time, stay-athome Mum, not because I had time on my hands, but as a chance to escape into another world for a while, like reading, but I was doing the creating. The first acknowledgment of my work was a Commended Award from The Victorian Cancer Council 2008 Art Awards for my poem ‘A Writer’s Words’. In the same year I published my memoir, ‘Spillover’, about the death of my horse to Hendra Virus. My children’s short story ‘My Reward’ was shortlisted for the Charlotte Duncan award in 2010 and I have had two children’s short stories published on Australian Women online, ‘Super Flower Power” in 2011 and ‘Told’ in 2012. I grew up on an orchard and I gave up the art of ballet for horses, going on to compete in dressage and eventing and dabbling in Endurance riding, although I still love the theatre. Horses got into my blood and a highlight was seeing the 2000 Olympic dressage and show jumping competitions in Sydney. SYNOPSIS: Thirteen year old Erin loves horses, but thinks history is boring - until her mystical opal helps her drift into a dream to follow the misadventures of Fayina, a girl of similar age from a fierce, nomadic, horse riding tribe from the Bronze Age in 3000BC. Fayina is lost on the Eurasian Steppe. Strangers from another tribe, Arima and his sister Mia find her and

take her to their secret village. Their tribe is wary of her and threaten her with banishment, unless she can teach the village people some of her horse and riding knowledge. Can Fayina save herself and return to her own people? The Bronze Horses shows the early relationships people have with horses and that the history of horses and riding is also our history. The Opal Dreaming series will highlight some of the significant changes in horse riding over thousands of years and pass on horse riding and handling techniques. news and reviews Morris Publishing Australia author chosen as Queensland’s featured author at NSW reading day event Elaine Ouston, author of The Mystery of Nida Valley series, was chosen as Queensland’s featured author for the annual Gilgandra Reads Everything Around Town Day, or GREAT Day, on Friday August 31st. Gilgandra has held this annual "day" since 2005, to promote reading to children from birth. The whole town gets involved . This year's GREAT Day was based on Alison Lester's 'Are we there yet?' A committee member told me they selected this book because it was chosen as the National Book for this year's National Year of Reading. As a result, GREAT Day's activities took the form of "a journey around Australia". Children from local primary schools were involved, and children from several small schools nearby, plus some leaders from Year 10 at the high school. The organisers chose an author from each state to feature. But because of financial restrictions, in all states but NSW, the "author" was represented by a Gilgandra High School drama student, acting as the chosen author. This student read a speech from the author and read from her/his book. Local author from Dubbo (Pat Clarke) and an illustrator from Sydney (Serena Geddes) came to talk to the kids as they passed through NSW. Elaine told me she was thrilled to be chosen to represent Queensland. “With all the fabulous authors Queensland has, I was proud to chosen. I was in good company, with Tim Winton being selected from WA and many other well known authors from the other states.” MPA was not surprised to learn of Elaine’s selection, as her books have been very popular with school and public libraries and students because of the fast paced fantasy adventure and the educational elements of the inclusion of Australia’s Megafauna and dinosaurs.

The recent review below will give you some insight into the reason this series is so popular.

REVIEW - Cecilia Jansink “Captured" is the second book in The Mystery of Nida Valley series, but even if, like myself, you haven't read the first; the events prior are explained enough that you won't be left feeling lost. Our protagonist, Meg is an absolute delight to get to know and the adventure she takes us on will leave you on the edge of your seat. Packed to the brim with magic, mystery, the ultimate bad guy, and unwavering friendship, "Captured" is the ultimate story to re-affirm or develop your love for all things fantasy. The plot is timed perfectly, the world and characters are all well developed, and the scenery vivid. This is truly and ‘all ages’ book. While it is aimed at older children/ young teens there is plenty to delight adults as well. The only downside? Well, it will leave you desperate for more, and eagerly anticipating reading its predecessor. Bring a little extra magic to your life and take the leap into Nida Valley - you won't regret it. http://celsconfessionsofabookymonster.blogspot.com.au/201 2/08/captured-ej-ouston.html Http://themysteryofnidavalley.com

Author: Melissa Wray Debut author, Melissa Wray lives in Geelong with her husband and two children. When I started writing it was more of a hobby for me. I enjoyed creating stories and then I started to become more and more addicted to writing! I write because it gives me the freedom to create a world of make believe with enough reality thrown in to make it believable. Destiny Road is based loosely on my life. It is my first published novel and I am very proud of it. I was never able to say thank you to my dad for saying yes when I asked could I live with him. He passed away several years ago and it has always bothered me that I could not get those words out before he died. Now with Destiny Road I feel like I have said them, so hopefully he knows.

SYNOPSIS: Destiny Road is a story of decisions and consequence. It is a real life journey that changes the life of the main character, Jessica, in ways she couldn't imagine. Leaving her life-long friends behind and starting at a new school is more than Jessica

And then she is faced with a huge decision – a chance to go back to her old life – but it comes at a cost. Follow Jessica's journey as she struggles to find the right path and deals with the trauma of a new life, her first relationship, and growing up.

eight things you didn’t know about STEPHEN ANASTASI Australian author, Stephen Anastasi, shares his writing journey with us. 1. When did you begin your writing journey? In 1992 I bought a computer and learned to touch type. At that time I had what some authors call 'High concept'. This was, 'What if they could put a kind of superconductive hair net over your brain so that you could be seamlessly connected to a computer? Is the limit of human evolution still human.' When I started writing this, I soon realized that this was going to be a quarter of a million words. That seems impossible to me then. So I wrote it into a twenty thousand word screenplay. 2. What is your greatest joy in writing? I get excited when I see my work appreciated. A girl of no more than maybe seven, who I did not know (and certainly thought unable to read this particular book) came to me in a café and looked me right in the eye like a lawyer. 'You wrote that book?' she said. 'The Runes of Ire?' I said. 'Yes,' she said very seriously, 'Are you going to write another one?' So that is my greatest joy – leaving people with a splash of indelible imagined life. 3. What is the hardest part of writing for you? So many stories! So little time! I have so many fantastic stories that need to be turned into architecture that I hate that I haven't the spacetime to get them all completed. I don't find the writing hard at all. It is the not writing I find hard. 4. What's the easiest? When I get started the words soon come so naturally I am often unaware later of having written them. This makes editing easy because it reads like someone else did all the work. 5. What's next for you? Are you currently working on or have plans for future projects? As my present two books find a market share it will

be important to finish both trilogies. The second book in the Mathemagicians of Yore series is Riding the Steel Breeze, and the third is Garney Barnicoat – Fly Blown Druid. At least that is the working title. My second book 'The Druid' will see a sequel 'The War Dragon' and then 'The Last Defence.' 6. Do you have any tips for writers about the writing process? Show, don't tell! Ditch the adverbs – use 'power verbs'. Just tell the story – in a modern world of bites, long winded is a death sigh. Dropping the verbose adds air and light, and turns verbal heartburn into prose. 7. Other than writing, what else do you love? Teaching students who like Science and Mathematics and English. 8. Describe your perfect day. Five thousand elegant words, usually discovered on my computer the next day, as if written by an author better than myself, only to find it was actually me that wrote it.

These books are only the beginning for Stephen Anastasi. That he will become well known author is a given. You will hear much more of him in the future. His books are featured on page ten.

Set in Paris, The Crowing of the Beast follows the course set by George Nozette and Bernard Simeoni as they are thrust into a high profile case to defend Heinz Tag, a Neo-Nazi supporter, for the murder of a Jewish protester. A powerful page-turner, you won’t be able to stop reading this book. Audience: Adult.

NOVEMBER CATastrophe by Robert Favretto: A fun story for kids of all ages. Rhys's teacher, Mr Shakespeare, wants him to write a story. But it's no easy task - especially when he's got writer's block and doesn't get along with his teacher. Throw in class pest, Alex, and a time out, and he's got a recipe for disaster. Audience: Early readers.

DECEMBER On the Nose by Robert Favretto: On the Nose is a fun and entertaining read that I'm sure would be enjoyed by young primary school kids who love the Just books and the Captain Underpants series. This story is along the same lines: crazy, funny and entertaining – everything a nine-year-old boy loves in a book. Someone or something has dropped a stink bomb in the city of Aroma – and the stench is devastating! Can Justin's amazing nose sniff out the mystery of the phantom smell? Audience: Early readers.
